Karl Marx:
Karl Marx was a german philosopher who believed that society was broken into two classes, the working class (proletariat) and the capital class (bourgeoisie). Marx developed the conflict theory which stated that societal conflict arises due to class discrimination and that those with economic power control other social institutions. Another main point of marxism which is reflected in this article is the oppression which results from the capital class abusing their societal power in order to benefit themselves whilst the working class continues to be exploited and wronged. A prime example is societal power within the criminal justice system. Those with more money hold more influence and those of a wealthier status tend to receive less severe punishments for crimes than those of a lower socioeconomic status. For example, Lindsay Lohan famous actor and celebrity has been convicted on several charges which consisted of driving under the influence, assault, skipping court, violating probation and misdemeanor cocaine use. However, despite her multiple arrests Lohan has served very minimal time in jail and has received grace on several occasions. She has been released on house arrest, offered probation, has had her bail rescinded and overall been accommodated for due to her social status and wealth. She can afford the best lawyers and high bail charges allowing her to essentially pay her way out of jail and avoid facing any real consequences. While celebrities can manipulate the system people with low income are more likely to be incarcerated and even receive more excessive legal punishment. The government relies on court fines and fees to run the legal system which is why minor offenses can be charged for up to $400 which a lot of people can't afford which means they have to opt for jail time. This is a great example of Marx's conflict theory because it shows how wealthy people with a reputation are heavily favored while the lower class is constantly exploited so they can benefit.
Max Weber:
Max Weber was a German sociologist who developed a theory similar to Marx's conflict theory. Weber's Theory of Bureaucracy states there must be a clear division of labor and tasks meaning that everyone must play a role in order for the job to get done. Bureaucracies have actually become very common in modern society and are present in many establishments today. One establishment that isn't as acknowledged for its bureaucratic nature being universities. Universities have several different offices and several different people in power to report too and several more people that work under them. They all have specific responsibilities that adhere to the needs of the students, but just as these organizations play a role in running the university the students contribute as well. There is an explicit set of rules that outline the expected conduct of the students that they must adhere too. Students also pay tuition (and many more fees) in order to attend these universities which help keep them in business. They rely on rules and regulations and treat everyone mostly the same because they want to achieve the goal of running a successful university. This article covers the recent spike of managers hired within the higher education field. Universities are greatly expanding and require more management in order to oversee the other positions that need to be filled so the labor is divided. This is intended to maintain order and keep universities going in a good direction because you cannot deliver without the right people on the job. Especially in marketing and management because universities are massive social and economic structures which are accountable for public money. A university is a prime example that in order to effectively meet a goal the labor needs to be divided. Universities need the departments and students to work together in order to ensure that any expense whether financial or in terms of human resources is proportionate to what we are trying to achieve which would be producing educated students with degrees.

Pierre Bourdieu was a French sociologist who believes that your cultural capital plays a role in your power and status within society. Cultural capital being one's values, norms, knowledge, and beliefs that are valued in society. For instance, famous billionaire Bill Gates once ranked as the seventh most powerful person in the world arose to his great wealth mainly because he was a privileged child. Gates was born into wealth with two professional working parents and received an education at a prestigious private school which allowed him to learn to code and develop programs in the school’s computer lab. He also had access to his mothers extensive network in which she encouraged him to utilize as early as his teenage years. Gates cultural capital had a very large impact on his success and has allowed him to gain a high status in society with an immense amount of power. This article addresses not only how these circumstances impacted his journey, but questions how successful the rest of the population would be if they were offered the same. Bourdieu's belief clearly holds true as Gates used his wealth, knowledge, and skills to rise to the top and become the 5th richest person in the world. There is however a great amount of inequity in terms of cultural capital. Gates became a computing prodigy because he received an advanced education which is highly valued in society. However, those that do not have that equal opportunity tend to be in lower positions because of this. IB ➞ Art school???
I’ve gotten some PMs with questions about taking the IB Programme in high school and how it’s now affecting me in art school now so I thought I would finally do a Post(TM) about it. Again, everything I’m about to talk about is based on my personal experience but please feel free to talk with me if you have any concerns about this post. I want to put myself out there and help others if I can since I had so much support getting to where I am now. If you have any other questions about art college or the likes, please feel free to shoot them my way 💘
WHAT IS IB?
The International Baccalaureate Programme (aka. IB) is a “fast paced” program for middle and high school students that’s supposed to promote students to think independently and critically. At my school, there was a set courselist, with one or two elective choices. Some courses were Standard Level (SL) and some were Higher Level (HL), which certain post secondary schools allow to swap out for first year credits. IB is different in different schools and different countries though, but overall, It’s meant to be an alternative and more challenging high school experience.
IB + ME:
I can’t say I had the most positive time in IB or anything since I was also REALLY struggling with mental health at the time and had hated every moment I was in high school. But upon reflection, there really were things to be gained from the experience. Pros and Cons.
I was in full IB until second semester grade 10. At that point, I was already thinking about studying art after high school, but was afraid to commit to it entirely because there was so much pressure from my parents and peers to go into a “respectable” career and get a “high paying job in science or math or business” or something. So I dropped to partial IB as a compromise and took IB math, Art and HL English, as well as regular Ontario Uni level Physics, Bio, CompSci, etc etc etc.
DO YOU USE ANY OF THE STUFF YOU LEARNED IN IB CLASSES IN ART SCHOOL?
No.
I have an official credit for Grade 12 Advanced Functions but the most math I do now is occasionally multiplying by 12. Could I solve a quadratic equation now? Don’t even know what that is anymore.
BUT! You never know what could inspire you. I was so interested in quantum physics, I’m literally writing a story about parallel universes. Learning is almost always good.
LET’S TALK ABOUT IB ART FOR ONE HOT SECOND:
I did find IB Art incredibly applicable and helpful because it taught me how to keep a sketchbook and understand the creative process, neither of which you actually directly get graded on in the animation program at Sheridan but is personally tremendously beneficial for developing ideas and creating pieces. Now I draw thumbnails for everything I do. And I appreciate them!
Even if you walk away from IB Art with the most garbage collection - no sweat, it’s only high school and it’s learning the process of creating art that is so so important! When I applied for Sheridan Illustration (the same year I was accepted into Sheridan Animation), I basically repeated a simplified version of the IB Art process and was accepted into the program with a portfolio score of 80, with 9/10s in Process/Ideation, Media Exploration and Sketchbook, which you REALLY focus heavily on in IB Art.
I would highly recommend taking IB Art if you are thinking about doing art after high school, or doing art in general.
BEING AN ART STUDENT IN IB:
I hate that Art Kids(TM) have a bad rep. People always assume that art is a dead end career and we all starve and we’re all morally questionable people but that’s not true at all!
But being that Token Art Kid in IB (outside of IB Art class) actually made me feel awful back then. I was always kind of an odd one out. That’s not to say that people weren’t nice or anything. But there was so much pressure to not go into art. Ever since I was a kid, I’d always wanted to be an “artist when I grow up” but I found that in high school, I’d often say that I was “interested in art but was also thinking of pursuing an alternative career in this and that” because I was afraid of being looked down on in an environment where everyone around me wanted to do something “brainy”. Admitting that I wanted to do art almost felt self depreciating because everyone else was actually going to get a “real job” and live “better lives”. But that’s totally not the case! I ended up spending a lot of time taking a bunch of science and math courses I didn’t really like to maintain my twenty thousand irrelevant Back-Up Plans.
IB AND LEARNING SKILLS:
I think no matter what you do, having good organization and time management skills is always going to be so so important!
Sheridan Animation is such a loaded program, you really have to try to schedule your time well. I used to complain about the IB courseload but I honestly feel like Sheridan Animation is so much more laborious. We had 8 courses + an elective last semester, each about 2 to 3 hours a week, plus all the time you had to put into doing homework and living life and sleeping.
Even though IB is meant to keep you busy to force you to learn good work ethics, I don’t think forcing someone to work harder necessarily means that they are going to learn how to manage their time. I was 100% unmotivated and depressed and self destructive in high school. I was in IB for four years but I always studied the night before an exam up until the very last one. And when I graduated and moved out, I realized that I was a mess and I had to change, and it was that self realization was what motivated me to learn how to slowly put together my life back together. Only then did I start taking steps to curate my life and learn how to plan ahead and schedule my week and get! stuff! done!
So all in all, maybe IB does put you in an environment where having good learning skills will benefit you, and maybe that will motivate you to learn how to maintain a good work ethic. But I really do think skills like how to study and learn and live life is something that you have to be aware of as an individual and want to work towards. Being in IB may help with those things, but it isn’t going to suddenly grant you powers to study two weeks in advance and keep track of all your assignments in a way that works for you. You have to learn to do that yourself.
HL CREDITS (AT SHERIDAN):
Not all schools acknowledge HL credits. Sheridan claims to. I know people in Sheridan Animation who have used their HL credits at other universities before coming to our school but I’ve never spoken to anyone at Sheridan who has used them in a Sheridan program.
This is lowkey a call out post @ Sheridan, but I have tried applying for advanced standing with my IB HL credit to replace my electives twice, but neither time went through. They claimed to not have the proper paperwork, and when I paid for IB to send my transcript to Sheridan, it was never found (despite there being a confirmation email from IB that it had been sent to the right place) so I was unable to get it processed due to a lack of paperwork. And when I tried to follow up through email, I was ignored.
(If you have successfully gotten your HL credit request to go through at Sheridan, please PM me and tell me how :’^))
I do know for a fact that even if you could, in theory, replace some electives at Sheridan with your HL credits and as long as you still had enough courses a semester to consider you a full time student, you would still pay the same amount of tuition. You would just be less busy.
SHOULD I TAKE IB THEN?
Honestly, it’s up to you and your own life!
I know I rambled on for so long only to give the most passive and watery advice but I think you should do what you believe is best for you! Just be aware that whatever you choose is going to lead you to a different future and all your actions will have consequences (good or bad or either) and be okay with that.
Sometimes, I wish I didn’t do IB so I could have more free time to draw. Maybe if I drew more in high school, I would have gotten into Sheridan Animation a year earlier. But if I did that, I wouldn’t have learned how to paint in Art Fundies and have the friends I do now and live with people I love. Everything I’ve ever done up to this point has brought me here and I wouldn’t change a thing about the past so all I can do is work on making my future, you know :))

My favorite memories of like all the postcolonial theory and critical race theory courses I took was sitting in a room with a bunch of other Latin American students who were clearly upper class in the countries they were born and raised in and watching them tryna be woke and shit when they clearly had no real investment in the implications of what we were learning because they were the beneficiaries of neocolonial shit in their own countries. They wore it on their sleeve, they didn't cross the fucking river/desert they came on a plane or their parents sent them here and paid INTERNATIONAL STUDENT TUITION prices or whatever. The international students were rare in these social theory classes though, they were mostly taking STEM courses for their major but there would be A LOT of second and first gen kids in there though. I could smell, 'em. They came to the US and grew up in suburban upper class communities going to private or well funded suburban grade schools for rich white kids where they learned to act white and kiss white ass till like finally Khayleigh or whatever called them a porch monkey and that was like their WOKE moment. Like, oh my god, these people think about me the way me and my parents thought about the folks with darker skin tones who used to cook, clean and do the gardening for us back in (insert Latin American country or basically ANY post colonial nation in the global south) LOL.
The difference between community college, where the graduation rate was around 50% and all the kids were ghetto like me V like... the type of browns I met at UF were night and DAY. Nobody there was fucking struggling. One Indian kid I was talking to who was kind of bewildered to find out my background in the US started telling me about all the fucking medication he was on and that he couldn’t function without and I was just like... what problems do you have? What are you lacking? Your parents provide everything for you. You don’t have to worry about food, clothes, you have medical insurance, your parents pay your rent, you’re breezing through life why are you sad? Like, there’s a billion people who look like you in the country your parents came from who are really suffering, I wanna get to know THEM.
With south asian kids, if they heard the slightest hint of lower class markers in my voice or whatever it was like I didn’t exist. They were interested in honkeys and honkeys alone, they loved whitey. You could smack one of them across the face and if you’re white it’s alright. They also got along with other upper middle class non-white people, the sort they went to school with and they would like, bond over the pain of not being accepted by Honkey Doodle Dandy while desperately wanting sour milk stank on ‘em. They gravitated towards other browns who had been socialized into the same kind of upper middle class circles they’d been but never anyone poor because as part of that socialization they learned to despise poor people and to blame them for their own issues. The struggle.
Anyway, I made zero friends in college. It was literally impossible. The class divide made it impossible. Also, after my first semester when I figured out that even if these kids were performing poverty by looking like absolute shit and buying their clothes from the thrift shop they bank accounts told the real story. I hated them. I despised them. I hated the theory they wrote. I hated that in academia most people who looked like me were not, in fact, like me. They did not come from the same background and in fact these folks highly resented people like me who might remind them where they came from or how they’re seen by the power structure. The entirety of their interest in postcolonial theory and critical race shit was cherry picked to include their experiences being rejected by the white people of the same social class they were brought up with and that’s it. They almost resented people who didn’t want to indulge this type of internalized white supremacy and class status or whatever. The less shame you had the more they hated you too LOL.

The Wizard Economy and Why Hogwarts is stuck in Medieval times
(Okay, I didn’t mean for this to get this long, and I am sorry for my bad English, but this is my view on the harry potter economy and how it might function)
There are a series of issues with the society seen in the harry potter books:
- Why do Wizards not use modern technologies like guns, or cell phones, and how do they have relatively modern cars and motorbikes, but no computers. - How does poverty work in a world where magic is real - How does trade between Wizarding and Muggle society work, considering that it is generally accepted that some trade must exist in that wizards would be buying muggle products and materials.
The final point is the key to answering all the proposed issues: Trade between Muggles and Wizards is inherently complex. We know that trade is necessary as Hogwarts is the only magic school for British children, and there are 280 students in Harry’s year. Now we can assume that this number would usually be higher, as the wizarding community was decimated by the first wizarding war, but even if we assume generous numbers, with such a small population there is simply no way that this society could support itself without trade living at the level of consumption that is seen in the books. While one might consider that magic is the answer to this, it cannot be as we know that poverty exists in the wizarding world as seen in knock turn alley, and through the Weasleys financial issues. So there is an underlying assumption that magic comes at some sort of price, or that the magic that can be carried out without costly ingredients is limited. Now that we have established two things: the need for trade and the existence of poverty, we can proceed.
As the Statute of Secrecy forbids interaction between the two groups of Muggles and Wizards to a certain degree, while wizards would be able to purchase muggle goods, muggles would not be able to purchase wizard goods. This creates a huge problem: For wizards to buy muggle goods they would need muggle currency, and an exchange rate where one side has no demand for the other currency does not work. If the demand for the pound is much higher than comparatively the demand for the galleon, then it figures that the exchange rate is incredibly unfavourable for wizards, and the galleons worth is very low. What supports this theory: - The only known source of muggle currency to he wizarding world is muggle-born wizards buying school supplies to go to Hogwarts (there is no tuition). We can’t assume that that is not the only demand for the gallon; it is likely that wizards offer services like therapy, or agricultural goods would sell to muggles as well as wizards in order to receive the more valuable currency and convert it to galleons where the purchasing power is higher, but even then, the demand created there would likely not match the demand for muggle goods. - considering Hermione’s likely middle class background connected with the fact that she has no known financial issues already gives us a clue to the exchange rate between the pound and the galleon. - Harry enters his vaults in Gringotts to find literal mountains of gold. While this is meant to show how rich harry is, it could also show how low the Galleons value is that high wealth is represented by literal heaps of gold. I mean if you have ever seen one of those gold vending machines in Dubai where you get like a finger of gold for 10,000 GBP. The Potters sold a hair potion company very profitably, but it is unlikely that they would have actually made THAT much money. Unless Galleons are worth much less than the muggle equivalent. Now, if we accept that the Galleon is a very cheap currency, what conclusions can we draw from this: - We can treat the wizarding economy like one of a Low-income nation with little to export. - The Wizard economy struggles with a constant economic deficit - The reason why wizards don’t have phones or computers is that they can’t afford them. The wizarding community does not have the resources to build computers, and they cannot buy them because their currency is worthless. Even if they did buy them, or muggle families bought and sold them, without an electricity network, or a cell service network, they would be useless.
Some possible rebukes to my theory: - the calculated “exchange rate”: There is a fan made and largely accepted exchange rate that equates the worth of wizard currency with muggle currency by looking at what prices are given in the books to certain objects compared to their muggle equivalent. This is not an exchange rate. Exchange rates are determined by the demand and supply of a currency compared to another currency. What is shown in the calculated exchange rate of 1GBP = 25Galleons is a comparison of purchasing power of a few select goods. This is why the exchange rate between Nepal and the US is 1US$= ca.100 Nepalese Rupees, but I could buy trackies for 300Rupees in Nepal, that would have cost me 15USD. This would assume an exchange rate of 1US$=50Rupees. The distortion is evident. My theory does not stand in contrast with the accepted conversion of the purchasing power of these currencies. - why not just melt down the gold? My first thought was, that if they found a way to “money launder” their gold into the muggle economy, Harry and people like him would do better melting down his galleons and exchanging the gold for muggle currency. However, one must assume that the galleons are not pure gold, rather those nifty goblins melted them down and used the gold to coat zinc or something as a wizarding equivalent of printing money. - why do they have cars if they can’t afford modern technology? Unlike computers and phones, cars don’t need a network of electricity, and it is possible that an alternate fuel source was found, or that someone in a high position in a car company is a wizard and is secretly channeling funds to build wizard cars with the resources of the already established car firm.
This answers all my initial queries, except for the one about how poverty works: For the people in knock turn alley one could assume that their wands are taken from them for committing crimes, or something similar that cut them off from magic, or maybe their parents where, and they grew up in the poverty cycle. The poverty of the Weasleys one could assume comes from expenses of food, and flue powder and medicine etc. Travel and nourishment seem to still require money to do, so there you go, that makes sense to.
