Honey Revenge - Retrovision
My favorite album of this year is the new Fall Out Boy album, So Much (For) Stardust, and there are many reasons why, but it's not just for the sole fact that Fall Out Boy is one of my all time favorite bands, if not my favorite. They've been my favorite for years now, and it's great to see them back, but their post-hiatus material has been spotty at best. I enjoy their post-hiatus material a lot, but it hasn't aged as well as some of their earlier material (I still defend M A N I A quite a bit, because as electronic and pop-heavy as it is, it's got some of their best hooks and some of their most interesting ideas to date), so when they announced their new album, a lot of people were curious about what it would sound like. The first couple singles, "Love From The Other Side," and "Heartbreak Feels So Good" ended up being old-school sounding pop-rock jams, and you know what? That's what the album sounds like, but in the best possible way. The band went back to their roots, so to speak, and they decided to cut the "experimental" electronic stuff they were doing to make an album that they were actually proud of and were able to have fun making. So Much (For) Stardust is that record, and part of its charm is just that -- it's not trying to be anything more than what it is.
Sometimes less is more, but that's not the insult that a lot of people might think it is. I used to really enjoy music that was unique, weird, off the wall, and different in some kind of way, and I still do to some degree, but at the end of the day, I want stuff I can go back to. I want stuff that's catchy, fun, and memorable, not necessarily weird and challenging. I just want to enjoy music, and listening to albums like that isn't always rewarding or enjoyable. They might be great albums, but there's a lot to unpack, or they aren't accessible or immediate. I love a lot of albums that wear their sound on their record sleeve; they know what they are, and they don't try to do anything else out of that ordinary, or that would be unexpected for an album in their lane. Pop-rock band Honey Revenge is that kind of band, and their debut LP, Retrovision, has the same kind of charm for me that So Much (For) Stardust does, because it's one of the most fun, catchy, and enjoyable albums I've heard all year (and within the last few years, really). This record just came out within the last couple of weeks, but I can't stop listening to it, because of how infectious it is.
Honey Revenge is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Devin Papadol and guitarist Donovan Lloyd, the two met in Los Angeles at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and for the last couple of years, they've been doing their thing on Tik Tok and getting some virality from that. I've only listened to them a bit, at least just from what I've seen on Tik Tok, but I saw that they just released their debut album on Thriller Records, so I thought I'd give it a listen. Well, I was not expecting that I'd fall head over heels for it. What's interesting about this record is that there's not much to it. It has a rather basic pop-rock / pop-punk-ish sound that I feel like would have perfectly fit into the "neon pop-punk" sound of the late 00s and early 2010s. Bands like All Time Low, Forever The Sickest Kids, and Every Avenue had a sound that wasn't quite pop-punk, but not quite pop-rock, and they were very bright, fun, cheery, and catchy as all hell. This fits into that vein, and if you're diabetic, you might want to watch out for this album, because its hooks are sugary sweet. It's just a classic case of one of those albums that does what it does very well, and that's all it needs to do.
Papadol does admittedly have a slight resemblance to Hayley Williams of Paramore, at least on certain moments throughout this record, but they don't sound alike whatsoever. I hate how any alternative band with a single that a femme-presenting singer is automatically labeled as a Paramore copycat, but that's not the case here at all. Her voice is absolutely fantastic, though, and that's a big part of what carries this album, although the songwriting is good, too. The album doesn't have much variety, but the hooks on their own stand their ground. Songs like "Airhead," which opens up the album, immediately slams you into the ground with its fantastic hook, but as the album goes on, songs like "Rerun," "Murphy's Law," and "Favorite Song" continue that. The only real issue I have with this record is that its lyrics are a little subpar in spots, and a couple of songs have a bit of an awkward sound to them, such as "Habitual" (mainly in terms of rhyming and phrasing, because the hook is great), but the record is just so damn strong. It's short, sweet, and to the point, but just when it ends, I'm already pressing play again. This is a perfect summer album, so if you're looking for something catchy, fun, and relatively carefree that you can get stuck in your head, this is the perfect album for that.

Album Review: Catch Your Breath - Shame On Me (Thriller Records)
Catch Your Breath’s rise has been steady so far, but that is about to change. This band is going to shoot off and Shame On Me is the fuel injection.
A fresh, burgeoning alt-rock band based out of Austin, Texas, Catch Your Breath will release their new album ‘Shame On Me’ on October 20th, 2023, via Thriller Records. It’s always nice to immediately understand what all the fuss is about and with the hyper-intensity, but anthemic as f**k introduction of No Evil, it all becomes very clear. Catch Your Breath have an appealing alternative sound,…

Eddie, posting to TikTok: Look, I love my husband. I adore this man and I have for the majority of my life. He is the shining star in my sky.
Eddie: And I know. I know he wants to read more this year. And I know that when you’re dyslexic, it can be really difficult and I’m happy every time he accomplishes what he wants but…
*Flips camera to show Steve reading on the other side of the couch*
Eddie, gesturing: What kind of demented book handling is this? That book is bent in half. It’s a hardback!

prologue.
—[name] transfers into class 1-a as a foreign exchange student. what a terrible decision.
—overall tws for series; cursing, extreme yandere, gore, sexual thoughts/actions, noncon/rape, horror elements, manipulative tendencies, nonconsensual recording, religious imagery, terrible actions in general, almost everyone here is a terrible person except [name] lmfao, etc.
—tw; cursing, kinda obsessive behavior, weird shit, yandere, nothing too bad yet but it will get SO much worse omg.
★・・・・・・★
“class, we have a foreign exchange student coming in today.”
the students had sat down rather quickly, eyes up and focused on their stoic teacher. at his words however, they all perked up, even the usually uncaring ones.
a pinkette’s – mina ashido’s — hand shot up immediately, bright grin simply inconsolable.
“sensei! was that another lie to get us to train harder?” it seemed she asked what they had all been wondering, aizawa’s usual strategy having lost their trust.
it almost earned a chuckle, but his dead stare remained. “sure. anyways, come on in.” he cast his gaze to the door which promptly opened, leaving the class breathless in anticipation.
“everyone,”
a girl had entered.
a girl whose eyes shone like a deer in headlights.
oblivion incarnate, in a way.
“please welcome [name] warmly.”
they awaited for her to open her mouth and speak, hoped that her voice was as cute as she looked.
“ah…” she fiddled with the ring hanging from her necklace, eyes pointedly staring at the back wall of the classroom. “i’m [name]! it’s nice to meet you all, please be kind.” her japanese was broken, not very fluent. although, that just seemed to pique their interest even more.
a small beep sounded out from somewhere, but no one paid it any mind, so she didn’t either.
applause and murmurs sounded out from the class, and she bowed respectfully before taking an empty seat in the back, mentally thanking the gods for such a convenient seat.
“[name] took the entrance exam back in her country, so she’s still admitted here. that said, please don’t get distracted — let’s just focus on some easy things for today.” aizawa stuffed his hands in his pockets, sneaking a knowing glance toward [name]. now she knew he was doing this for her sake.
as he began teaching, she kind of… zoned out. as an observer of sorts, she wanted to get a feel of her classmates. the fears of not fitting in or getting along with anyone had set deep in her bones, so she might as well try to get over it.
the boy next to her had blond hair, spiky and kind of fluffy-looking, [name] found he gave the impression of a pomeranian, especially considering the oddly angered expression he had. his eyebrows furrowed further at the feeling of eyes on him, so he turned to the girl and raised one.
snarled, bared his canines like the image she prepared prior, “what’re you lookin’ at, huh?”
she flinched out of her stupor. right, that wasn’t subtle at all. at least the teacher didn’t hear the exchange.
“sor—” she began in english, catching her mistake and starting again. “i mean, i’m very sorry. i kinda zoned out.” before turning right back to the lesson (no, she really just decided to observe someone else — what a curious little thing).
he bit back a retort about her shitty pronunciation, instead allowing a grimace to curl his lips, eyes raking down her entire figure. if she got to stare, so did he. he was just petty like that.
truth be told, he hadn’t gotten a good look at her when she was at the front of the room. it felt kind of weird to have the foreign kid next to him, but at least she wasn't an eyesore. crimson hues dragged down from her side profile, to her collarbones, to her… to— wait, n— no, he was just looking to be petty. he was just being his normal self. so why did a bead of sweat roll down the back of his neck? had it always been that hot in the room?
(the ac continued to blast behind him.)
he snapped his neck back to the front, gritting his teeth angrily. he didn’t know what that was just now, and so he turned it into the emotions he knew best. frustration. aggravation.
right. he was just annoyed at her for staring so randomly.
[name] had felt his gaze the entire time, and god, if it didn’t send a chill down her spine. she wasn’t stupid. he was looking so intently — did he plan to kill her or something? just because she looked at him? fuck, it was the worst way to start at the new school.
she took a breath internally, eyes shutting for a second. it’s fine. just make it through the day, and she wouldn’t have to deal with them until tomorrow.
[name] tuned out most of what aizawa was saying unintentionally. maybe the angry boy had set her off more than she thought. she had zoned out, looking out at the clock, counting the ticks of every second.
what she was unaware of, however, was the red dot flashing in and out of existence, a device pointed directly at her from the opposite end of the room.
a golden-haired boy and earjacked-girl snickered, fist bumping eachother at the clean recording.
a bubbly brunette looked over to her friend, a boy with green curls that seemed complimentary with the blond mentioned earlier. she whispered something to him, and the blush was evident on their faces.
two-toned hair shifted slightly as the owner fidgeted with his fingers, unable to quell the uncomfortable heat rising on his face and neck. his ravenette friend bit her lip, face pink, scribbling furiously in her notebook, frantic words that didn’t look much like helpful notes.
matter of fact, most of the class wasn’t paying attention to the lesson anymore. they didn’t care about the easy ‘hero-history’ lesson. no, of course not.
their cute, foreign classmate was way more worthy of their attention.

ruminating once again on the concept of murdering shen yuan for fun suspense and ghosty reasons and like. i like the concept of trying to write a murder mystery but fanfiction doesnt really Work for murder mysteries because you know what everyone is about before you read the first paragraph. there's very little mystery to be had in guessing between a set of likely candidates, and a lot of it has less to do with logic and puzzling things out and more to do with judging how the author interprets 7 and also 9 so ive been stuck ruminating on it for ages.
and then earlier i had a stroke of what im not going to call genius because i thought "the best way to add a twist to a scum villain murder mystery!!! would be if the person who murdered shen yuan!! was also shen yuan!!!"

The duality of my song lyric writing means that on the one hand, I have a goofy song addressed to a daddy long legs spider calling it "Mr. bean on several toothpicks" and asking it to go away because pictures of its mouth under a microscope are kinda nasty looking.
On the other hand, I have a song about the ghost of a person who was murdered with the pieces of their body buried under the foundation of an abandoned greenhouse, and the bulk of the song is about the ghost's memories fading away until the line repeated in an effort to preserve the memory of their older sister warning them about going out after dark ("Katie did, Katie did, Katie did") turns into the ghost losing the meaning of the phrase entirely, misinterpreting it as an effort to keep count of the bugs inside the greenhouse where they're trapped ("Katydid, katydid, katydid") as they slowly forget everything but the pattern on their murderer's shirt.

The Home Team - The Crucible Of Life
I swear The Home Team is alternative’s best kept secret, because how are these guys not way bigger? I remember finding them a few years back, when they dropped the deluxe version of their second album, Slow Bloom, and it was a killer mix of pop/rock, but I revisited them again when my buddy Jake and I started up a series where we recommend something to each other. He picked that, which I coincidentally had heard before, but I wanted to revisit it and spend more time with them. I was eagerly awaiting the follow-up, which we ended up getting in the form of The Crucible Of Life. They announced it a few months ago, but it’s been out for a hot minute now, so how is this thing? Has the wait been worth it, or is this a disappointing follow-up?
Oh, yes, this record’s wait has certainly been worth it, because it’s fantastic. I would say that this is better than their last album, partially because their sound is a bit more honed in and they sound stronger because of it. I don’t know if it’s a top album of the year for me, because the more I’ve listened to it, the more I have some problems with it, although it’s nothing really to do with the music itself. There are a lot of things that work with this album, though, namely vocalist Brian Butcher, and how he’s able to bend his voice at will to match the sound of a song. Their sound is also really unique, taking elements from pop-punk, metalcore, pop, and R&B to become what I consider the spiritual follow-up to Issues.
Their sound is rather inventive, especially for this brand of R&B-core being around for the last decade or so, but it’s still relatively niche. I will say, however, that this record, kind of like their last album, has a tendency to become derivative and repetitive, despite the hooks and the overall energy being really awesome. It’s tough, because I’m having a blast when I listen to this album, but only a few songs really stick out, such as “Loud,” “Brag,” “Hell,” and “Turn You Off,” but a couple of other tracks stick out that actually have a bit of a different sound.
“Somebody Else’s Face” and “Walk This World With Me” are back to back on the album, but they’ve both got a pop / R&B sound and tone down the heaviness and energy slightly. Ollie Baxxter of Broadside actually guests on the former, and he sounds fantastic, but these are surprisingly a couple of highlights. It’s just kind of a shame, because for being a 35-minute album, you’d think more songs would stick out, but its repetition can be a bit of a hindrance. My favorite albums of this year are memorable throughout their runtime, regardless of how short or long they might be, and I’ve desperately wanted to put this up there, but some songs just are so forgettable, it kind of hurts.
They’re still really good songs, so it’s not like anything is boring, bland, or bad, but a lot of the songs sound the same. The highlights really stick out in that case, and there are only a few songs that stick with me after finishing the album every time. I go back to it hoping that it’ll stick more, and as great as it is, it just fails to stick with me in the same way that other records have this year. I don’t know, I still love it, and it’s still a highlight of the year, so it’s worth the listen, but it does blend together a lot and they only have a couple of tricks up their sleeve. The Home Team are still a band worth watching, so give them some time, and they’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
