Marks and a head injury~
Hi guys!! This is just a quick little Pazzi one shot based off a scene in Sellaâs amazing series! I hope you guys enjoy!! Let me know how you like it :)
âAZZI!â Paige screamed from the bathroom,
Azzi came running at the sound of her voice, worried something had happened to the blonde, âWhat?! Are you okay?â She said slightly out of breath.
Paige stood near the counter inspecting herself in the mirror, her reflection showed back 4 marks that Azzi had left the night before, âWhat. Did. You. DOâ Paige said turning towards her, pointing at her neck.
Azzi didnât mean to leave marks, she never has before, but she mustâve been a little careless last night. âI didnât mean to! I swear!!â
Paige huffed out, crossing her arms. âYeah well, you just turn into a vampire last night for no reason?â
Azzi moved forward to inspect the hickies, they were there for sure, all purple against soft pale skin. There was no denying what they were.
âAz..Weâre literally stuck in the house with your whole family! This is not how we need them to find out wereâŠwell, yknow.â Paige replied, her and Azzi still havenât had the âTalkâ aabout what they were yet, for now they were only just now realizing how in love with each other both of them had been their whole friendship. Paige had been living with the Fudds for almost 3 weeks now, still supposed to stay another 2 months while covid dragged on. So to say the least, she didnât need them knowing she was making out with their daughter every night.
âDo you think we could cover them?â Azzi said running her fingers over the marks, which she was secretly a little proud of.
We could try?â Paige said with a shrug,
A voice broke though their conversation; Katie calling them down, âGirls! Breakfast!â
Paige dragged her hands over her face, mortified of what was to come.
âItâs gonna be fine!! Just..put your hair down, and um wear a long sleeve.â Azzi suggested,
Paige narrowed her eyes at her, âYour lucky your cute, or else I would leave you right here right now.â She ment it be threatening, but the fondness in her voice was clear,
âOh yeah?â She said back, holding an eye contact that made Paige blush.
Paige leaned forward and kissed her quickly and softly, âYeah.â
Azzi smiled against her lips, but then focused back on the task at hand. âOkay cmon, sheâs gonna come up here if we arenât down there in like 10 seconds.â
Paige nodded and moved to her room, heading striaght for the closet.
It was summer, meaning the was a blazing 98 degrees outside, not exactly hoodie weather. To make matters worse, Paige was known for always complaining about the heat, wanting to wear as little clothes as humanly possible on days like this.
So as she stood there, black hoodie pulled up, Long blonde hair brushed and down, sweeping over her shoulders and neck. She looked more than unusual.
âThis good?â She said looking at Azzi,
Azzi gave her a half-hearted smile, knowing everyone would know something was off, âwellâŠI canât see them, so..maybe?â
Paige sighed, awaiting her doom in kitchen.
The girls headed downstairs, Azzi in front of Paige to keep her out of eyesight for as long as possible.
âGoodmorning girls!â Tim greeted, already seated eating bacon next to Katie.
Azzi looked up and smiled, âMorning,â
Paige stared down at the floor, giving just a slight nod to Tim.
At this strange greeting, he raised an eyebrow to Katie, silently wondering what was up.
She didnât know either, but now intrigued on whatever Paige was doing.
Azzi ad her sat down at their normal seats, the plates of colorful food in front of them.
Azzi started eating quietly while Paige picked at some fruit, not daring to make eye contact with anyone.
All she could do was sit in the uncomfortable heat of her hoodie and hair and pretend there wasnât 4 places Azzis breath and lips lingered for too long in the heat of the night on her neck.
Katie had her suspicious about Paige and Azzi, it wasnt everyday when your daughter asks if her friend could come live with them during quarantine. Most kids would grow sick of their best friends after a while, but it only seemed like they got closer.
A few times she caught them doing things most friends wouldnât, not anything crazy, just enough to make her question. Smiles that only seemed to show when the other was around, the stolen glances whenever someone made a joke, the way Paige could always sleep in the guest room, but found herself sleeping with Azzi each night.
she had talked to Tim about it, him agreeing that maybe they were more, doubting they even knew it. Saying that âtheyâre just friends for nowâ and to see what the future could hold.
But now as Paige sat scarily quiet at the table, hoodie pulled close and hair that seemed less then naturally flowing, his suspions rose.
âSo..how did you guys sleep?â Tim asked, starring right into the downward facing head of Paige,
Katie smirked at his question, knowing he saw what was happening.
Azzi looked between them, quickly answering for both of them, âfine-yeah. We slept fine.â
Tim nodded his head slowly, taking a bite of his bacon, âPaige? You slept good too?â
Paiges face burned at the direct question, she hadnât slept good, she mainly stayed up the whole night tangled with his daughter, sharing secret whispers and heated kisses. She glanced up for a moment, Just meeting his eyes before adverting her glare back down to her fruit. âGood.â
Silence fell over the table, everyone knowing what was up, but still not having the proof.
after a beatt, Katie spoke. âWhat did you guys wanna do today? We could go swimming at the lake, Paige I think your new swimsuit came too if you wanna try that on.â
Paiges eyes widened, knowing if she even took of this hoodie, the bruises would be shown. âUmânah, Iâm good.â She choked out, her voice higher then normal.
âare you sure you donât wanna go swimming?Itâs really hot out, might be nice.â Time added, trying to get Paige to break.
âYup.â Paige replied, keeping her answer short.
âShe said she doesnât wanna go swimming. Whatâs so wrong with that?â Azzi injected in, knowing her parents were up to something.
Katie shrugged, âNope, nothings wrong, just figured she might be hot after wearing that hoodie all day, arenât you sweetie?â
Paige practailly choked on her fruit, coughing for a second before shaking her head.
Tim started chuckling at the poor girl, her lying was laughable, and he couldnât help it.
âWhatâs so funny?â Azzi asked, trying to protect Paige from her parnets,
Tim could barley breath before laughing out his words, âNothingâjust donât think she noticed that her hoodie fell while shaking her head.â
Paige looked down and shit.
One of the bruises was out and barely covered by her hair, making it clear something was behind the blonde strands. This time she actually stated choking on her fruit, which caused herself to shake even more while coughing.
Azzi patted her back worried, âDad!â
Tim stayed back laughing, raising hands up in defense,
Paige finally stopped her coughing fit, face bright red and now tugging her hood all the way up, pulling the strings as much as she could, before throwing her head down into her arms.
Katie started the laughing too at this, finding it funny abut also shocked to see Paige so flustered.
âPaige? Whatâs going on there?â Katie added in, her voice dripping with insincere sweetness.
Paige kept her head down, shaking with with a groan,
Azzi knew they got caught, so now flustered herself, because soon it would be clear only one person couldâve done that to her.
âUmm-were gonna, gonna go upstairs.â Azzi spat out, standing up quickly and tugging Paige who was a mess with her.
âWeâll talk about this later young ladies!!â Katie shouted at them speeding off,
Because of Paigeâs hoodie pulling pulled up so much, it covered her eyes, leading her straight into the wall with thud,
âoW!â
Tims laughter only grew at the sight of poor Paige just trying to leave the room, now injured.
Azzi could only look at her with sorrow for the girl, knowing she put her in this position.
Paige took Azzis hand again, being up tugged the stairs, not before whispering âYour dead to meâ under her breath.

I am a queer indian woman in america. I didnât even get to come out to my parents before all my rights were taken from me. I just cried in my sisters arms for two hours because they won EVERYTHING. All three branches. Iâm mad, but I feel an immense loss for all those around me. Itâs not âjust four yearsâ because the damage that is about to be done will be irreversible.

Title: Happy Tears in Tampa

Pairing: mom!Paige Bueckers x mom!Azzi Fudd x gf!mom!Reader, oc!daughter (Isla)
Fandom: UConn Womenâs Basketball
Summary: their last 40 mins on that court in the huskies jerseys, but theyâll spend a lifetime in your heart

I donât think Iâve ever cried as hard over a basketball game in my life. And Iâve cried over a lot of basketball games.
But tonight⊠tonight was different.
âLetâs go, Paige! Come on, Azzi!â I yell, my voice cracking from the sheer force of emotion. My hands are trembling around Islaâs tiny ones, and my heartâs pounding like Iâm the one who just played forty minutes.
Except I didnât play. I stayed back in Storrs during the Elite 8. I wasnât in Spokane when Paige dropped 71 points- both games combined and Azzi having off game shooting wise, but on defense she was a monster. I wasnât in the stands when they beat Oklahoma and then USC to get here. But I made it to Tampa.
And I wasnât alone.
âIsla, do you want to sit with Nana Katie and Grandpa Tim again?â I asked her at the start of the fourth, her curly puffs bouncing as she shook her head.
âNooo, stay with Mama,â she said, cuddling into my side.
We were sitting next to Aaliyah, who flew in just to support the girls. She held Isla during the second quarter, whispering jokes that had our daughter giggling into her braids. But by the time the final few minutes rolled around, Isla wanted to stay close.
Aaliyah leaned toward me now, grinning as she nudged my elbow. âYou good?â
I sniffled, nodding. âIâm so proud of them. Like, so proud.â
âYouâre gonna make me cry, too,â she teased, brushing under her eyes. âThis is crazy.â
And it was.
1:32 left on the clock. We were up 82 to 53.
Thatâs when it happened. The moment I think Iâll remember for the rest of my life.
âFoul on Azzi Fudd,â the announcer said.
I leaned forward, my hands tight around Islaâs waist. âAlright, baby, Mommy Azzi got a little handsy.â
Azzi raised a hand, shaking her head with a soft smirk as she turned to the bench.
And then, almost in perfect sequenceâŠ
âSubbing in for UConn: Qadence Samuels, Allie Ziebell, Caroline Ducharme, Aubrey GriffinâŠâ
The crowd roared.
The tears hit.
I watched Paige, grab the towel from Allie also giving the ones who subbed in high-fives before walking over to Geno, who stood on the sidelines already tears building in his eyes.
She wrapped her arms around him so tight, and he hugged her right back.
Thatâs when I felt it. The heat behind my eyes, the burn in my throat. My chest caved in.
I was crying.
Not because they were losing. Not even because they were winning.
But because they did it. She did it. They did it.
Paige Bueckers. Azzi Fudd. UConn womenâs basketball team. National Champions.
âMama?â Isla asked, frowning up at me as she wiped at my cheek with her tiny fingers. âWhy are you crying?â
I grabbed her little hand and kissed it. âBecause Iâm happy, baby. Mommy Paigey and Mommy Azzi worked really hard for this. These are happy tears.â
She looked over to the bench where Paige was wiping her own face, then at me, then at Azziâwho was grinning so hard her cheeks looked like they might burst. Azzi had her arm around Aubrey, motioning toward the stands, probably at Katie and Tim.
Then Isla smiled. âOh⊠okay.â
The buzzer sounded and the arena exploded.
Final score: 82-59.
Confetti launched. The band played. The girls jumped and screamed and fell into each otherâs arms.
I made my way toward the family section as the trophy ceremony started. It was chaos, but the good kind.
I spotted Amy and BobâPaigeâs parentsâand their partners, along with Lauren, Ryan, and Drew, cheering their hearts out. Tim was lifting Islaâs arms, making her cheer. Katie had her hand over her mouth, completely stunned.
âMOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT⊠AZZI FUDD!â
I saw Azzi freeze a bit, her eyes wide before she was pulled forward. Paige clapped the loudest out of everyone, grinning from ear to ear. Sarah throwing confetti in her face as she walks to the middle of the stage they were on.
âSheâs gonna sob later,â I muttered.
âGonna?â Aaliyah teased. âSis is already started from when she hugged Paige.â
Net-cutting time was next. Azzi before paige, next Paige climbed the ladder second to last, CD cutting her pieces, and with Geno going up last.
She looped the net around her neck, turned to the crowd with the biggest, brightest smile Iâd ever seenâand scanned until she found us.
âISLA!â she screamed, laughing.
I hoisted Isla up and waved.
When she and Azzi finally made their way to the tunnel, they paused right at the barricade. I squeezed forward as bob and everyone around us let me get to the front, holding Isla tight.
âHi, my loves,â I breathed, voice thick with emotion.
Paigeâs hair was slick with sweat under her championship hat, the net still around her neck. She was practically glowing. Azzi wasnât much better, her eyes slightly red, but had biggest smile on the face of a winner.
Paige had reached her siblings first. Ryan got to hug her over the barricade first. Then Lauren and finally, after pulling drew into a really tight hug arms wrapped around his head, Drew reached for his handshake with Paigeâan elaborate, goofy routine theyâd perfected since he was little. She nailed it with the biggest grin ever.
After tapping his head back. She looked at us. Isla and I like we were her true prize. Before I could make my move fully.
Isla squirmed. âI want Mommy Paigey!â
Paigeâs face lit up.
She reached over the barricade, grabbing Isla from me and hugging her to her chest. âOh, I missed you so much, baby girl!â
Azzi leaned in, kissing my cheek, then my lips softly. âThank you for being here,â she whispered. âSheâs gonna remember this forever.â
I kissed her back. âSo will I.â
âMommy ZeeZee,â Isla said, reaching for her with one arm while clinging to Paige with the other. âI wanna go with you and Mommy Paigey!â
âThen letâs go,â Azzi said with a wink.
âCan she come too?â Paige asked, nodding toward me.
A staff member overheard and nodded. âWeâll come back for her once the press clears.â
I squeezed Paigeâs hand and mouthed, I love you.
Fifteen minutes later, one of the assistants waved me down from the floor.
I was ushered through a side tunnel, weaving through wires and empty Gatorade cups. The door to the locker room opened, and I stepped in just in time to hear a chorus of singing.
âWe are the champions, my frieeeends!â
Azzi was standing on the benches, Isla in her arms, Paige beside her with her arms wrapped around both of them. Sarah and Ashlynn were dancing like idiots with their hats backward, and Kk had her phone up recording the whole thing.
Geno was nowhere in sightâthank God.
âHey! Mamaâs here!â Paige called out.
âMAAAMAAA!â Isla yelled, reaching for me.
I ran to them, hugging Azzi and Paige both as they leaned down to squeeze me between them.
âIâm so proud of you,â I whispered.
Paige buried her face in my neck. âThis means everything with you here.â
âDonât start crying again,â Azzi joked, nudging me.
âNo promises,â I said, sniffling.
âHey, team pic with Isla!â Aubrey shouted.
Everyone gathered in. Paige held Isla. Azzi hugged me from behind. Sarah threw up a peace sign. Caroline was crying for the third time.
The flash went off. The room buzzed with love.
Isla yawned, rubbing her eyes. âCan we sleep now?â
Everyone laughed.
âYeah, baby,â I said, kissing her head. âYou earned it.â
Paige and Azzi looked at each other, then at me.
âI think we all did.â
And for the first time all week, I believed it too.
National Champions.
A family.
Happy tears. Always.

CROSSING THE LINE â PART ONE âĄ
paige x azziÂ
trope: âplayerâ p to âloverâ p
word count: 7.7k
A/N: This is another Pazzi series but in this one they donât know each other well prior to Uconn. This story is also based off of the 23-24 roster so Nika and Aaliyah will be in it. Let me know what you think about the first chapter if you can!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
June 2023
The air in Storrs was thick with early summer humidity as Azzi Fudd stood outside her new dorm suite, taking in the moment. The sunlight reflected off the glass windows of the building, casting sharp shadows on the sidewalk, and a slight breeze brushed through the trees. It was time for the summer session, and though she was excited, a nervous edge clung to her as she stared at the door in front of her.
It was one thing to have visited campus on her official trip, a whirlwind tour that had felt like a dream. But thisâthis was different. This was real. She was officially here now, transferring from the University of Maryland, a school much closer to her home state of Virginia. And everything felt... uncertain.
Azzi glanced back at her parents, Katie and Tim, who were busy unloading boxes from the trunk of the family car. Her mom smiled warmly, but Azzi could see the pride and slight sadness behind her eyes. Theyâd spent so many years together, traveling from court to court, celebrating wins and comforting losses together. Azzi knew that this moment wasnât just a transition for her, but for them too.
âEverything okay?â her mom called out, noticing the hesitation in Azziâs stance. âYou good?â
Azzi nodded quickly, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. âYeah, Mom. Just thinking.â
âThinking about what?â Tim asked, as he hefted a large duffel bag onto his shoulder. His voice, deep and steady, was always a source of comfort, even now, when he was trying to hide the slight lump in his throat.
Azzi let out a breath and smiled. âJust... everything, I guess. Feels different now. Iâm really here, you know?â
Tim chuckled softly, giving her a quick side hug. âYouâve been ready for this since you were six years old, Azzi.â
âYeah,â she said, a little louder this time, trying to shake off the butterflies in her stomach. âI guess so.â
Just as Azzi was about to walk inside, she heard voices from inside the suite. She unlocks the door to the common area and she sees two figures on the couch. Â
It was Ice Brady and KK Arnold, two familiar faces from the team. Ice had been at UConn for a year now, and KK, like Azzi, was a newcomer. Theyâd both greeted Azzi warmly during her official visit, but this was different. Now, they were teammates, and the real journey was about to begin.
âYo, Azzi!â Iceâs voice was full of energy as she spotted her standing there. She exchanged a quick glance with KK before both girls shot up from the couch in the living room.
âHey!â KK added, giving Azzi a huge smile. âWe thought you were coming in tomorrow!â
Azzi returned the smile, shrugging a little as she closed the car door behind her. âYeah, I was supposed to. But I figured Iâd come today so my parents could be at Joseâs game tomorrow.â
âOh thatâs nice,â Ice said with a nod. âHowâs he doing, by the way?â
Azziâs heart softened at the mention of her brother. âHeâs good. Really excited. His team has this big AAU tournament this weekend so heâs been talking about it nonstop.Â
âThatâs awesome,â KK said. âIâm sure heâll be great.â
Azzi agreed. "Yeah. are you guys who I'm rooming with?"
Ice gave her a playful smile. "No, the suite is going to be you, me and Paige. My room is the one right across from yours.âÂ
Azziâs eyebrows lifted slightly at the mention of Paige. She already knew her from the USA U16 team, though they hadnât spent much time together there, barely even spoke in fact. But sheâd heard a lot about Paige from her best friend Caroline Ducharme who had filled Azzi in on some of the colorful details of Paigeâs reputation on campus. On one hand, Caroline had talked about how great of a leader Paige was on the court, how she was the best teammate and friend anyone could ask for. On the other, Caroline had shared some of the more... interesting sides of Paige's social life. The way she seemed to move effortlessly from girl to girl, never sticking around too long with anyone, always leaving an impression, but rarely giving anything more than that.
Azzi blinked, her surprise not just from the name but from the mixed impression sheâd formed of Paige. She wasnât sure what to make of it yet, but there was no denying the complexity of the person sheâd be sharing a suite with and Azzi was always one to try to understand people.Â
âPaige?â Azzi repeated, trying to mask the hint of curiosity in her voice.
âYeah,â KK said with a nod. âSheâs not here right now, but Iâm sure sheâll be back soon.â
Azzi nodded, still processing. âI hope she doesnât mind me taking up all the space with my stuff,â she joked, looking down at the suitcase, bags, and boxes stacked beside her.
âNah,â Ice said, laughing as she led the way inside. âWeâve got plenty of room, trust me. Besides, Paige prolly has more shoes and clothes than me and you combined.â
As the three of them carried Azziâs things into the suite, the easy camaraderie between them put her at ease. They chatted about the upcoming summer practices, the teamâs expectations for the season, and the plans for team bonding over the next few weeks.
"Everyoneâs cool," Ice said as she dropped Azziâs bag next to the door. âCarolineâs been telling us about you so youâll fit right in.â
KK agreed. âYeah, I think youâre gonna love it here. I already do.â
Azzi smiled, feeling a little more comfortable with each passing minute. The transition wasnât going to be easyânothing ever was. Leaving Maryland, her home state of Virginia, and her family was tough, but UConn felt like the right place for her. The team, the tradition, the opportunity to growâit was all right there in front of her.
After a few more minutes of chatting, and once everything was settled in her room Azzi turned to her parents, who were standing by the door with proud but reluctant expressions.
âYou good?â Tim asked again, his eyes scanning the room, making sure all the boxes and bags were there.
âYeah,â Azzi said softly, her smile genuine but a little sad. âIâm good.â
Katie pulled her into a tight hug, whispering into her ear, âWeâre so proud of you. This is your time now. Just remember, weâre always here.â
Azzi squeezed her mom back, and then pulled away to face her dad, who nodded with a smile that didnât quite reach his eyes.
âIâll call you tonight,â Azzi promised, blinking back any trace of emotion. It wasnât goodbyeâit was just a see you later.
With one final glance around the suite, she gave her parents one last hug and waved them off. Watching their car drive away from the curb, Azzi felt a weight settle into her chest, but she didnât let it break her. This was the next chapter. She was here. She was a Husky now.
As Ice and KK returned to their spots on the couch, Azzi took a deep breath and sat down beside them. The nerves were still there, but the excitement was starting to overshadow them.Â
âŠ
It had been a busy, chaotic afternoon for Azzi, but the mood in the suite was starting to shift. The moving boxes were scattered across the floor, and though not everything was in its place, Azzi felt a little more settled. Ice had been a huge helpâher energy contagious as she bounced from one task to the next, organizing, unpacking, and offering friendly banter that made Azzi feel like part of the team already.
Now, with a little bit of space to breathe, Azzi found herself in the kitchen, sorting through a few snacks sheâd brought from home. Ice was at the counter, casually chatting with Azzi about everything from her childhood in Virginia to the UConn program, and how Ice had felt when she first stepped onto campus.
âI swear, when I first got here, it was like everyone already knew everyone,â Ice said, tossing a bag of chips into the pantry. âI felt like I was in high school again, trying to make new friends, but, you know, in a D1 college locker room where everyoneâs the best.â
Azzi laughed, thinking about her own transition. âYeah, I canât imagine. It was weird enough transferring from Maryland. Different atmosphere. Different vibe.â
Ice gave her a sympathetic look. âYouâll get used to it. Youâre a Husky now. Everyone has your back.â
Just as Azzi was about to reply, the door swung open, and in walked Paige. Azzi wasnât sure what she expected, but it certainly wasnât this: Paige, striding into the kitchen with her arm slung casually over the shoulder of a girl Azzi didnât recognize. Paigeâs eyes widened the moment she saw Azzi.
âOh shit, youâre here already?â Paige said, surprised. âI thought you werenât coming until tomorrow.â
Azzi didnât miss a beat, still calm and laid-back as she looked over at her. âYeah I was supposed to,â she replied, shrugging. âBut we figured itâd be easier to settle in today so my parents can go to my brotherâs game tomorrow.â
Paige smiled, her tone lightening. âAh, right. Family stuff. I get it.â Then she sauntered over to Azzi, giving her a quick, casual hug. Azzi, surprised slightly by the physicality returned it with an easy smile.
âI shouldâve been here to help you get settled. Let me know if you need anything else. Seriously. I can help.â
âItâs fine, really. Ice and KK helped a lot already so Iâm good for now, just getting organized.â
The girl Paige had walked in with stood awkwardly by the door, waiting for her attention as she cleared her throat.Â
Paige blinked and glanced at the girl, momentarily forgetting her presence, trying to be a helpful teammate and all. She smiled at the girl and gave a little wave. âRight, right. Sorry about that. One second.â She turned to Azzi and Ice. âLet me just take care of this real quick.â
Azzi watched with mild curiosity as Paige turned back to the girl, her tone shifting. âHey, Iâm sorry I didnât know my roommate was moving in but donât worry. Iâll call you later, alright?â
The girl crossed her arms. âYou promise?â
Paige grinned, though she hesitated for just a moment. âUh, yeah. I swear. Iâll call you.â
The girl wasnât convinced. âHow are you going to call me when you donât even have my number?â
Azzi, looking on with mild amusement, couldnât help but chuckle under her breath. Ice, who had clearly seen this routine a million times before, let out a snicker. Azzi found it just a little funny seeing this first hand.Â
Paige shot Ice a brief glare before reaching for a random piece of paper, scribbling a number on it, and passing it over with a grin. âHere, I got you covered. Call me later.â
The girl took the paper, looked it over for a second, then gave Paige a satisfied nod and walked out, closing the door behind her with a soft click.
Once the door was shut, Ice laughed and shook her head. âYou didnât even give her your real number, did you?â
Paige looked at Ice, looking completely unbothered as she grabbed a snack from the counter. âNah. Why would I?
Azzi leaned back, still amused. âThatâs... bold.â
Ice snorted from across the room. âBold? Nah, itâs fine and dandy until you hear her overdramatic ass crying on a random Tuesday night knocking on the door. You know, âI canât believe you donât answer my texts, Paige!ââ Ice mimicked in a high-pitched voice, rolling her eyes dramatically.
Paige shot her an unimpressed look. âIâm not that bad.â
Ice just snorted again, walking over to the counter with a teasing grin. âYeah, right. Youâd be better off giving out your real number to the next girl so I can actually get some sleep for once.Â
Azzi chuckled, clearly entertained. âI feel like thatâs something Iâm going to hear a lot around here.â
Paige raised an eyebrow, half-amused, half-accusing. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
Azzi shrugged with an easy grin, her tone still relaxed. âJust... a feeling. You donât seem like the âlong-termâ type.â
Paige smirked, leaning back against the counter. âIâm not. Youâre quick.â
Azzi smiled back casually. âIâve got my ways.â
âŠ
Later that night, Azzi was standing in her room, staring at the drill in her hands, an increasingly frustrated frown spreading across her face. She had tried several times to drill a screw into the wall, but it wasnât going well. The screw wouldnât go in, and she couldnât quite get the angle right. The half-hung poster she was attempting to place was starting to look like it might end up in a mess on the floor if she didnât figure it out soon.
After a few more failed attempts, Azzi huffed and placed the drill down on her desk. She let out a deep sigh and then, with a resigned look, walked across the hall to Iceâs room.
Ice was stretched out on her bed, propped up on one elbow, scrolling through her phone. She seemed to notice Azziâs presence as she looked up from her phone. âWhatâs up?â
Azzi stood at the door for a second, considering. âDo you know how to work a drill?â she asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and frustration.
Ice snorted without even thinking. âNope. But Paigeâs your girl for that, she hung up and put together literally everything in hereâ she said, as if the thought of using a drill had never crossed her mind.
Azzi shot Ice a look, not really surprised but not quite ready to give up just yet. âAlright, thanks.â She turned on her heel and walked back down the hall, stopping in front of Paigeâs door.
She hesitated for a moment not knocking if the girl was asleep before knocking lightly on the door. âPaige?â she called.
From inside, Paigeâs voice floated through the door. âCome in.â
Azzi opened the door slowly and walked inside. Paige was lounging on her bed, gaming controller in hand, completely immersed in whatever game she was playing. The sound of a loud explosion from the TV made Azzi pause, unsure if she should interrupt.
Paige didnât notice Azzi standing there at first, so Azzi spoke up, half-joking, âNever mind, I didnât want to bother youâŠâ
Paige immediately hit the pause button on the game, her focus shifting toward Azzi as she leaned forward. âNah, wassup? You need something?â
Azzi couldnât help but laugh at how quick Paige was to drop her game. âYeah, actually. Can you help me with something in my room? I canât get the damn screw in the wall.â
Paige raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at her lips. âSure thing, no problem.â She stood up, tossing the controller aside. âLetâs see what weâre working with.â
The two of them made their way down the hall to Azziâs room. Azzi moved aside so Paige could have space to look at the wall, where a lone screw still stubbornly jutted out, barely halfway drilled in.
Paige couldnât help but laugh as she inspected the job Azzi had done so far. âOkay, no offense, but this is probably the worst drill job Iâve ever seen,â she teased, her eyes dancing with amusement.
Azzi raised an eyebrow and grinned, folding her arms across her chest. âShut up, Paige. Itâs not that bad.â
Paige chuckled again but didnât say anything more as she grabbed the drill from the desk and started to work. She quickly fixed the screw, tightening it into the wall with ease. The sound of the drill whirring made Azzi relax as Paige went about the task with no problem at all.
âSo, howâd the move-in go?â Paige asked casually, her tone more laid-back now that she was drilling screws into the wall.
Azzi leaned against her desk, watching Paige work. âIt was alright. A little chaotic, but Ice and KK helped me get most of the stuff in. This place is a lot bigger than I thought tho. Not what I expected when I saw it on the tours.â
Paige nodded, glancing over at her briefly. âYeah, I get that. I had the same reaction when I first moved in. Itâs like... huge, but at the same time, it feels like home. Youâll get used to it.â
Azzi smiled. âI think I already am, actually. Everyoneâs been so chill.â
Paige finished drilling the last screw into the wall and stepped back, inspecting her work. âThere we go. Nice and sturdy,â she said, wiping her hands on her pajama pants. âYouâre all set.â
Azzi stepped over to the wall and lightly tested the screws. âIâm impressed,â she said, grinning.
Paige shrugged nonchalantly, a smile tugging at her lips. âIâve done it a few times.â Then her expression softened as she glanced at Azzi. âBut seriously, anytime you need help, donât hesitate. Iâm here.â
Azzi returned her smile, genuinely appreciating the offer. âThanks. Iâll keep that in mind.â
The two of them stood there for a moment, looking at the poster now hanging neatly and safely on the wall. Azzi stretched and yawned. âYou probably saved my life. Iâm pretty sure if I did it we wouldâve been in the emergency room in the middle of the night.â
Paige just grinned as she laughed lightly. âItâs all part of the job. Just donât make me do everything in your room like Ice did okay?â
Azzi chuckled. âIâm not making any promises. But thanks again Paige. Goodnight.âÂ
Paige gave a small wave, then turned to head out the door. âGoodnight.â
Azzi watched her go, feeling that familiar sense of quiet satisfaction after a day of transitions. She took a moment to look around her room again, now that the poster was securely on the wall and a few of her things were more organized. It felt more like home already.
With a quiet sigh, Azzi grabbed her phone, checking the time, then turned off the lights, closed her door and slid under the covers.
Through her closed door she could hear a faint âGoodnight Paigeyâ from Ice across the hall, followed by a low laugh.
Azzi smiled to herself, feeling a bit more at ease than she had earlier in the day. It was the first night, but she already felt like this could be her place. She closed her eyes, letting the dayâs chaos finally fade away, as the soft hum of the dorm drifted into the quiet of the night.
..
The first few weeks of the summer session had flown by for Azzi. At first, the pace had been overwhelmingâeverything from the practices to getting used to the new scheduleâbut after about the fourth day, she settled into a nice rhythm. The hustle and bustle of UConn life started to feel less like a challenge and more like second nature.
She was quickly getting to know her teammates and Caroline had made sure to introduce Azzi to everyone. The familiar faces were starting to feel like family, and it was easy to see who sheâd click with.
Paige and Ice were definitely among the first sheâd bonded with. The three of them had been roommates since the start of the summer, and theyâd already established a little routine. Ice was always bouncing around, full of energy, and Paige wasâwell, Paige. Confident. Unapologetically confident, Azzi quickly learned. But it was more than that. Paige had this magnetic, charming way about her that made it hard to not like her, and Azzi found herself laughing along with her obnoxious jokes more often than not.
Their banter was effortlessâteasing, joking, the kind of friendship where they didnât have to work at it at all. Azzi had quickly grown fond of their inside jokes, especially as Paige continued to narrate her escapades with her "friends." Azzi didnât mind. In fact, she found it hilarious hearing all the excuses Paige came up with.Â
Azzi had only been woken up by random girls being a little too loud a few times âwhich, all things considered, wasnât that bad. Ice had painted a very different picture, so Azzi was feeling pretty lucky. She figured if that was the worst of it, she could deal. Still, it was always interesting to see the fallout the next day especially with how unapologetic she was about it.
Though one night Azzi had a test for one of her summer classes early the next morning and the noise coming from Paigeâs room had reached a new level of obnoxious. So Azzi started with a text:Â
Azzi: Please tell her it canât be that good. Big test tomorrow.Â
When no response came after some time, Azzi groaned knowing she would have to get up. She padded over to Paigeâs door and knocked. The noise stopped, and after a beat, the door cracked open.Â
Paige appeared, shirtless, wearing only a sports bra that revealed her toned stomach that was slightly glistening. Her athletic shorts hung low on her hips as she leaned casually against the doorframe. Azzi felt her breath catch for half a second, her eyes involuntarily sweeping over Paige before snapping back up.Â
âLike what you see?â Paige asked, her grin widening as amusement sparkled in her blue eyes.Â
Azzi rolled her eyes, though her cheeks warmed. âShut up,â she shot back, unable to stop the laugh that slipped out. âPlease tell her it canât be that good. Some of us do like to sleep around here.â
Paige snorted, tilting her head as if considering. âTrust me, it definitely is,â she said, her smirk returning.Â
Azzi groaned, her exasperation melting into amusement. âOh my god youâre so full of yourself,â she said, shaking her head before crossing her arms. âBut seriously I have a test in the morning. Can you find a way to make her lessâyou know?â
âSay no more,â Paige said, already stepping back into the room. âGive me two seconds.â
Before Azzi could respond, Paige turned and strode into her room. A moment later, Azzi watched, equal parts amused and stunned, as a girlâclearly embarrassed and trying to straighten her shirtâwas ushered out of the suite. Paige reappeared moments later, leaning against the doorframe again like nothing had happened.
âAll set,â Paige said, grinning. âNow get some sleep so you can ace that test.â
Azzi blinked, her lips twitching into a reluctant smile. âYouâre awful.â
âYouâre welcome,â Paige quipped, shooting her a wink before closing the door.
Shaking her head, Azzi walked back to her room, equal parts exasperated and charmed.
âŠ
Today was Saturday, and Azzi was sprawled out on the couch in the common area of the suite, waiting for Caroline so they could grab some food. It was quiet, unusually so, and Azzi had almost forgotten what it felt like to have some peace.
That peace, of course, was short-lived.
The door to Paigeâs room creaked open, and out strolled Paige, looking like sheâd just rolled out of bed. Her hair was messy, and she was wearing a hoodie with the sleeves rolled up, but she was walking down the hallway like she owned the place, much like she always did. And she wasnât alone.
Azzi looked up, already knowing what was bound to happen. Paige was walking with some random girl, chatting casually with her, but Azzi could tell the vibe already. It wasnât unusualâPaige was⊠well, Paige and they hung onto every word she said. She was definitely one of those girls who lived in the moment, and the moment often involved a lot of moments with other girls.
They exchanged a glanceâAzziâs eyebrow lifting slightly, Paigeâs lips curling into a small grin. Both of them silently acknowledged the situation without saying a word.
Paige was clearly trying to move things along and get the girl out of the suite without making it awkward.
âAre you sure you donât want me to stay?â the girl asked, voice sweet, almost hopeful. She didnât seem to want to leave.
Paige, flashed the girl a smile. âI really appreciate the offer, but Iâve got a busy day ahead,â she said smoothly, despite the fact that the team was off today.
Azzi couldnât help but react to that, silently amused by the lie. But Paige said it with such conviction that it almost sounded believable.
The girl, however, wasnât so easily deterred. She tilted her head, her smile faltering. âOh, come on. You sure? I can hang out for a bit longer.â
Paige held her ground, gently guiding the girl toward the door. âReally. Iâve got a ton of things to do. A busy day ahead. But I had a great time last night, Kelly.â
The girl froze for a second, the name clearly not sitting right with her. âItâs Kelsy, not Kelly,â she corrected, voice suddenly sharp.
Azzi, who had been sipping her water on the couch, didnât manage to swallow in time. She choked, water spluttering out of her mouth as she tried desperately not to laugh.
The girl shot her a glare, clearly annoyed by the interruption. Azzi, trying to regain composure, quickly cleared her throat. âSorry,â she said, though it was clear she was doing everything she could to hold back a laugh. âI justâuh, you know water went down the wrong wayâ
Paige, without missing a beat, gave a shrug, offering the girl a small, unbothered smile. âYeah, right. My bad, Kelsy,â she said, waving her off with exaggerated sincerity.
The girl, not buying it, huffed, clearly upset, before storming out of the suite. The door slammed behind her with an almost dramatic finality.
Azzi stood there for a moment, her mouth hanging open in disbelief, before she finally let out a full laugh, shaking her head. âI didnât think it could get worse than the Tiffany thing, but wow. That was a level of awkward I didnât even expect from you.â
Paige, who had been casually leaning against the door frame, just gave a small laugh herself. âWhat can I say? People get confused. It happens.â
Azzi raised an eyebrow. âYeah, Iâm sure thatâs exactly what happened.â
Paige smirked, clearly amused by her own antics. âWell, what do you expect? Iâm a very popular girl.â
Azzi chuckled, shaking her head. âYouâre something else.â
Paige grinned, crossing her arms. âYeah, I know.â
Before Azzi could say anything else, the door to the suite opened again, and Caroline appeared, looking like sheâd seen the fallout of the chaos that just ensued inside the suite.
âI have no idea what just happened but you ready to eat Azzi, Iâm starving?â Caroline asked .
Azzi, still grinning, grabbed her bag. âI think Iâm ready for food. The whole situation that unfolded was enough for me.â
Paige gave her a wink. âYouâre welcome for the entertainment.â
Azzi followed Caroline out the door, still smiling to herself as they walked down the hallway. Behind them, Paige went back into her room.Â
âŠ
Later that evening, after hours of texting back and forth in the group chat, the team decided to gather in Nika, KK, and Aubreyâs room. The campus was eerily quiet, and the rain that had started around noon was still pouring, giving everyone the perfect excuse to stay indoors and hang out.
When Azzi arrived with Caroline and Jana, the atmosphere in Nikaâs room was already buzzing with energy. The team was always a little chaotic when they came together, and tonight was no exception.
Caroline and Jana waved as they entered, heading straight for Ayanna, who was sitting cross-legged on the floor, scrolling through her phone. They quickly fell into an easy conversation as the three of them always did.
Azzi, however, was drawn to the couch where Paige and Nika were lounging. The two of them were in the middle of a low-key conversation, but when Azzi walked in, Paige grinned and gave her an exaggerated wave. âOh wow look who finally made it!â
Azzi smirked as she plopped down beside Paige, nudging her with her shoulder as she did. âThings were just so boring without me huh?â
Paige rolled her eyes, leaning into Azziâs side. âYeah, well, we were thinking about getting a game started anyway, but weâre so glad you graced us with your presenceâ
Nika looked over at the two of them, her voice light but teasing. âYou two are honestly the worst at acting like youâre not attached at the hip already.â
Azzi and Paige shared a glance, both of them laughing before Paige nudged Azzi again. âWhat can I say? Iâm her favorite person.â
Azzi gave her a knowing look. âI was gonna say âIâm yours,â but weâll keep it PG.â
Paige snorted. âPlease, you canât even hide it. Itâs ok to admit it.âÂ
KK, who was pacing around the room like a ball of energy, jumped in. âIâm so bored! Somebody needs to come up with something fun. Right now. I canât handle another second of just sitting here.â
Aubrey, who had been quietly observing the back-and-forth, laughed. âYou canât sit still for five minutes without going stir-crazy. We do need a game for the drinks, though.â
âHow about something that makes us talk?â Caroline suggested from the corner of the room, already leaning in toward the group. âLike Two Truths and a Lie or something.â
âOr Truth or Drink?â Paige suggested, raising an eyebrow at the rest of the group. âYou know, if youâre not feeling brave enough for truth, you just take a shot. Keeps things interesting.â
KK immediately jumped on that idea. âI love it. Iâm in.â
Azzi added in, âNo one gets to make up anything too wild. Yes Iâm looking at you Paige.â
Paige grinned and leaned back against the couch. âYou know Iâm just here for the drama, all my business is out there.â
Eventually Nika grabbed a bottle of tequila from her dresser and set it on the table. Everyone shifted in their seats, eager for the game to start. They hadnât even taken a sip yet, but the excitement was already buzzing.
âAlright,â Nika said, giving a cheeky grin, âTruth or Drink time. No backing out, no chicken-out answers. If we ask for more details you have to answer. If you canât answer honestly, you drink.â
Caroline picked up a drink, already eyeing it. âYou all know Iâm going to answer everything honestly. I'm basically an open book.â
Paige rolled her eyes at Carolineâs proclamation. âDonât get too cocky. Iâm pretty sure I can handle anything you throw at me.â
Everyone laughed as the game began casually, with people picking easy questions to warm up. It was now maybe the second round and Ayanna was up.Â
âOkay, Azzi,â she said with a mischievous smile, âwho was your first crush?â
Azziâs eyes widened a little. She wasnât exactly ready to dive deep yet, especially with her knowing the answer. âUh, Iâm gonna have to pass on that one. Drink it is.â
She grabbed a shot and took it without hesitation, laughing it off. âSome things are just better left a secret.â
âAlright, alright,â Nika said, playfully waving her hand. âWeâll keep it light for now, but Iâm coming for the good stuff later.â
They moved around the circle, everyone keeping it easy until the questions started getting a little more personal. Thatâs when Nikaâs turn came up.
âOkay, Nika,â KK asked, leaning in with a grin, âtell us about the boy youâve been talking to from the basketball team.â
The room fell silent, all eyes turning to Nika, who instantly blushed.
She raised her hands in mock surrender. âOh no, Iâm not answering that. Iâll just drink.â
Without missing a beat, Nika poured herself a shot and knocked it back, looking like she regretted the decision immediately. The group burst out laughing, KK throwing her hands up.
âThatâs what I thought!â KK said with a bright smile. âGirl boo you not fooling anyone.â
The game continued with increasing energy, the shots flowing and the questions getting juicier. Paige had successfully dodged every question so far, but she couldnât dodge forever.
Nika said, smirking as she looked at Paige. âOkay, who was your last kiss?â
Paige didnât hesitate for a second. âKelsy.â
Azziâs eyes widened for a second, then she burst out laughing as she caught the memory from earlier in the day.
Paige shot Azzi a look. âYou donât get to bring that up again. That was a one-time thing,â she said, rolling her eyes.
Azzi just chuckled harder. âIt definitely wasnât but whatever you say,â she grinned.Â
âAnyway,â Paige said, raising her cup, âitâs not like itâs a big deal.â She took a sip, clearly proud of herself for answering that one without flinching.
âAlright, alright,â Ayanna said with a laugh. âYou earned that one. But hereâs a harder oneâHow many people have you slept with?â
Paige shrugged, genuinely indifferent. âHonestly? I donât know. Itâs a little too much to keep track of.â
There was a brief pause. Everyone exchanged looks, a mix of shock and amusement. KK adding in, âWhat does that even mean? You lost count?!â
Paige just raised an eyebrow, looking unfazed. âI wouldnât say lost count. More so like I never started.â
âOkay, okay,â Nika said, shaking her head in mock disapproval. âHereâs a real questionâHave you ever actually fallen for someone?â
The room went quiet, the group waiting for Paigeâs answer. She glanced around the room then shrugged. âNope,â she said flatly, taking a sip of her drink anyway.Â
Azzi blinked. âNever? Not even a little? Not once?â
âNope,â Paige repeated with a grin. âItâs all just... whatever.Â
âAlright, Iâm curious about this one. What made you start sleeping around?â KK asked, raising an eyebrow.
Paige let out a small laugh. âHonestly? It was easy. And I donât like getting too attached to people. Itâs not complicated.â
Everyone nodded, though there were a few knowing looks exchanged, especially between Azzi and Nika, the two of them knowing Paige the best.Â
âI feel like Iâm getting to know you a little too well,â Azzi said, teasing her friend.Â
âIâve got nothing to hide,â Paige replied with a grin, pouring herself another shot.
Nika was next, clearly prepared to ask a question. She knew exactly how to get Paige to squirm.
âAlright, Paige,â Nika said, her grin wicked. âWho in this room would you sleep with if you had the chance?â
The room went dead silent. Everyone leaned in, waiting for the answer, expecting Paige to dodge.Â
Without missing a beat, Paige smirked. âAzzi.â
The room erupted into fake cheers and exaggerated reactions. KK threw her arms up like sheâd just won a championship. âNow see thatâs positive attention!â
Azzi blinked, caught off guard. âWait, what?â she asked, her voice a mix of surprise and amusement.
âI knew there was tension there,â Nika said, grinning knowingly as she pointed between the two.
âNah, no tension,â Paige said with a wave of her hand, leaning back casually. âAzzi couldnât handle me.â
Azzi raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a small, knowing smile. âOh, is that right?â she shot back. âYouâre lucky Iâm too classy to argue with you about this in front of everyone.â
The room howled with laughter, KK practically falling over.
âYâall are killing me,â Ice said, pretending to wipe a tear. âBut for real, Paige, Iâm offended. Not even a second thought for your other roommate? What am I, invisible?â
âSorry, Ice,â Paige said with a teasing grin. âBut we all know youâd fall in love with me.â
Ice gasped dramatically. âExcuse you, Iâm not a simp.â
Nika shook her head, still laughing. âAlright, thatâs it for me. I canât keep drinking when Paige just steamrolls through everything. Iâm done.â
âAgreed,â Ice said, standing and stretching. âThis was fun until I got my feelings hurt.â
As the group began to disband, KK teased, âP boogers, you better sleep with one eye open. Ice coming for you.â
Paige laughs as she and Azzi stand up as well, exchanging a quick look. Azzi grabs her phone, checking the time. âYou heading to bed too?â
Paige shrugs. âYeah, itâs been a long day. You ready?â
Azzi nods, her hand already on the door handle. âYeah, letâs go.â
Before they leave, they glance over at Ice, whoâs sitting with KK, who was pulling out her laptop.
âHey, Ice, you coming?â Azzi calls out.
Ice looks up from KKâs laptop, giving them a thumbs-up. âIâll be there later, after I help KK with something. Donât wait for me.â
They head out of Nika's room, walking down the hallway side by side. The sound of the rain is a steady backdrop to their conversation, the soft rhythm adding to the relaxed vibe between them.
After some time Paige glances over at Azzi, a bit curious.
"So, back in U16," Paige begins, looking over at her with a slight grin, "why didnât you ever talk to me? I couldâve been harassing you for years by now."
Azzi laughs lightly and stops walking for a moment, thinking, before glancing at Paige. "Well, it wasnât that I didnât want to talk to you. You just... kind of gave off a vibe."
Paige raises an eyebrow, incredulous. "A vibe? What kind of vibe?"
Azzi hesitates, trying to use the right words. "You seemed kind of distant. Like, you werenât exactly there to make friends. You had this... I donât know... serious energy. Like you were always focused on something else. It felt like you were... in your own world so I just let you be."
Paige shrugs, not offended but now more curious. "I was honestly dealing with some things at the time so I wasnât as friendly as I usually am so I can see that."
Azzi nods, taking it in. "Yeah, I get that. It didnât help that you looked... intimidating, too."
Paigeâs eyebrows shoot up. "Intimidating? Me?"
Azzi chuckles softly. "Yeah, you. You never smiled, and your eyes were always sharp, like you were constantly analyzing everything around you. I donât know, you just... didnât seem like someone I could approach easily and be like, Hey Iâm Azzi.â
Paige laughs, a little embarrassed now. "I had no idea I came off that way. I was probably just lost in my head all the time. Sorry if I freaked you out."
Azzi grins. "Nah, donât apologize. Honestly, it was kind of intriguing. I spent the whole time trying to figure out what was going on in your head. You were like a puzzle I didnât know how to solve."
Paige smirks, amused by the whole thing. "Well, if I was a puzzle, I definitely wasn't making it easy."
Azzi shrugs, a playful smile tugging at her lips. "True. But hey, the mystery was kind of cool. It was like you had your own world, and I didnât want to disturb it."
Paige hums thoughtfully, looking sideways at Azzi. "Well, that was probably true. I wasn't the best at making people feel included. But... Iâm not exactly the best at making the first move either."
Azziâs grin widens. "You know, I had a little crush on you back then. Thatâs why I didnât answer back in Nikaâs room.â
Paige stops in her tracks, her eyes widening in surprise. "Wait, what? You liked me?"
Azzi laughs, shaking her head. "I didnât say I liked you, I said I had a slight crush. Big difference. I just thought you were attractive."
Paige bursts out laughing, incredulity in her voice. "Me? I was scrawny as hell back then."
Azzi grins, slightly blushing now. "Yeah, but it was that... vibe you had. You know, the whole âdonât smile or talk to anyoneâ thing? It was... kind of hot."
Paige smirks, raising an eyebrow. "Ah, so youâre saying I must be way more attractive now, huh?"
Azzi pushes her lightly, rolling her eyes. "Donât flatter yourself, Paige."
âYeah, yeah. I know you like what you see.â But then Paige stops for a moment, looking at Azzi in slight shock. "Wait hold on, you're gay?"
Azzi hesitates, then shrugs casually. "Eh."
Paige looks at her, clearly confused. "What the hell does âehâ mean?"
Azzi chuckles. "It means Iâve never been with a girl. But, yeah, Iâve been attracted to them before. Just never really... explored it, I guess."
Paige hums thoughtfully, processing what Azziâs just said. She shrugs, her tone casual as they reach the door to their room. "Huh. Interesting. Guess I never wouldâve pegged you for that."
Azzi laughs softly, her eyes meeting Paigeâs for a second before she opens the door. "Well, I donât exactly go around talking about it. Itâs just... a thing. But itâs not really something Iâve acted on."
Paige gives her a sidelong glance, a hint of a smile on her lips. "Hey, whatever works for you."
Azzi laughs again, pushing the door open to their suite.Â
The two of them walk in, with Azzi dropping onto the couch and Paige tossing her bag aside before sitting down next to her. Theyâre both comfortable here, the casual vibe making it easy to just exist together.
Azzi stretches her legs out on the couch, leaning back. âYou know, I was thinking about something earlier... You said youâve never fallen for anyone. Ever.â
Paige looks at her, raising an eyebrow. âYeah, I said that. Why?â
Azzi hesitates for a second, watching her. âI donât know... I justâ I guess I was surprised. I thought maybe... I donât know. Youâd had some kind of experience that made you feel different about people.â
Paige chuckles, leaning her head back. âNope. You know me. Always avoiding anything that smells like feelings.â
Azzi raises an eyebrow. âYeah I know that, but like, why though? I mean, even after all this time?â
Paigeâs expression softens, and she pauses for a moment, clearly thinking about her words. Then she shrugs slightly, turning her head to meet Azziâs gaze. âI guess... when my parents divorced, my mom left when I was really young. I donât know. After that it kinda just changed my view and I just didnât see the point. I figured, why get close to anyone when theyâre probably just going to leave eventually? I mean, people donât stick around forever.â
Azziâs breath catches in her throat at the honesty in Paigeâs voice. She had no idea that was part of Paigeâs story. Thereâs a brief silence before Azzi speaks, her voice softer. âI didnât know that.â
Paige just nods, her gaze distant for a second. âYeah, well... itâs just the way it is, you know? No one really sticks around. So why bother?â
Azzi, still processing what Paigeâs said, doesnât want to make things awkward. Itâs one of those moments where they donât need to say much, but it means somethingâsomething shared. She shifts a bit, her voice a little quieter but still filled with warmth. âI get it. But, you know... not everyoneâs like that. People stick around if they want to.â
Paige gives a small, rueful smile. âMaybe. But itâs easier to just keep things light. No strings. Doesnât really give them the chance to decide for me.â
Azzi nods, a little thoughtfully, but then shifts the mood back to a lighter tone. âFair enough. Well, your rules definitely make it clear that youâre not looking for a relationship. But I gotta ask...â She raises an eyebrow mischievously. âYouâre always talking about rules but what are your actual rules when it comes to... sleeping with people? How have you made it work?
Paige looks at her for a moment, a teasing smirk playing on her lips. âWhy? You finally ready to admit youâre interested?â she says, raising an eyebrow.
Azzi snorts and grabs a pillow, tossing it at Paige hard enough that it lands squarely on her face. Paige laughs, throwing the pillow back, but Azzi ducks it and grins.
âPaigeee, what are your rules?â Azzi demands, still laughing.
Paige throws her hands up in mock surrender. âAlright, alright! Iâll answer. But donât get any ideas.â She shifts on the couch, getting more serious for a moment. âI donât sleep with the same person twice. Thatâs rule number one. I donât want anything complicated. And I try to make it clear to people that Iâm not looking for anything serious. No feelings involved. And rule number two? No athletes. I see them way too often in the Pavilion. Itâs just... weird, you know?â
Azzi raises her eyebrows, impressed. âWow, no athletes? So youâre telling me, if I wasnât your teammate, Iâd be on the table?â
Paige smirks, then glances over at Azzi, her eyes glinting. âDonât flatter yourself. Iâve seen you and youâre too much of a tease youâd probably want me to chase you.â
Azzi laughs again, shaking her head. âWow, you really know how to sweep a woman off her feet.â
âI try,â Paige says, her voice filled with easy humor, the tension of the earlier conversation fading into their usual rhythm.
Azzi looks over at Paige, her smile softening. âYou know, for what itâs worth, I think youâre full of surprises. I think you just need someone whoâs not... afraid of sticking around, you know?â
Paigeâs gaze softens at Azziâs words, and she offers a small, genuine smile. âMaybe. But Iâm good. Iâve got it all figured out for now.â
Azzi gives her a knowing look, but says nothing more. They both fall into a quiet, comfortable silence, the night outside slowly quieting down, just the sound of rain lightly tapping at the window as they relax together.
Azzi glanced at the time on her phone and stretched her arms overhead, stifling a yawn. âI guess we should probably get some sleep, huh?â
Paige stood up, stretching also. âYeah, itâs been a long day. You ready for bed?â
Azzi smiled, pushing herself off the couch. âYeah. I think Iâm done trying to figure you out for tonight,â she teased lightly.
Paige grinned, a twinkle in her eye. âGood. Let me know when youâre ready to start again tomorrow.â
Azzi shook her head with a laugh as she made her way to her door. âNight, Paige. Donât do anything I wouldnât do.â
Paige smirked, opening her door. âNo promises.â
âOf course not,â Azzi said with a grin, stepping into her room. âSee you in the morning.â
âGoodnight,â Paige called after her, before stepping back into her own room.
The doors clicked softly behind them, the quiet of the night settling once again.

Sad article that talks about injuries and the loss but this part:
"Bueckers, last yearâs National Player of the Year, had surgery just over a week later and was expected to miss at least two months. Tim Fudd, Azziâs dad, says Azzi quickly became like a âcrutchâ for Bueckers, doing all she could to help her teammate and friend. She ensured Bueckers took her medication and helped her get plates of food, with the two often eating together. Fudd, who herself was sidelined from Dec. 3 to Jan. 23 due to a foot injury, made sure her teammate was icing at the right times and reminded the Hopkins, Minn., native of the small milestones to look forward to throughout the rehab processâlike increasing her range of motion or adding weight while trying to strengthen her leg."
thanks anon

Hey bestie,
How are you? I hope youâre doing good! Me? Not so much after reading part 3 đ
My thoughts:
I wasnât expecting us to finally get the fight from that night, so I was NOT prepared. This - When Azziâs 18, Paige says those words, ones that sound a lot like giving up, and teaches Azzi that sometimes in life, even the people you thought would never make you feel this way, are the ones who'll break you the most â this broke me babe, and to think Azzi still held on despite everything. Like I know Paige was just hurting but maybe she does deserve the suffering (a little bit) after all.
The entire summer scene was fucking elite. Poor Katie and Tim, they just wanted a. nice. family. dinner!! And instead they had to sit through their daughterâs gay ass drama lmao, #freeKatieandTim
The bros standing ten toes down for Pazzi â Jon and JosĂ© not even trying sent me, like no sorry, P is our sister-in-law but we appreciate you dropping by. AND DREW, our MVP - Drew had looked over to Azzi then, his eyes wide and accusing, âyou canât be Azziâs girlfriend.â â little man was a bit traumatised, like sorry pookie who is this girl and why is she claiming to be something she canât possibly be? Heâs the GOAT fr, I know when he and P got back home, he scolded tf outta her and it went something like- Drew: âWhy are you letting Azzi be other peopleâs girlfriend?? Thatâs OUR pookie.â P: âI know, Iâm trying bro!â. Drew: âWell try harder!!â *stomps away*.
Then the Cayman Islands - UCLA and UConn to each other: đĄđ€đȘđ€Źđđż while Azzi and Paige: đ„°đđ«đ€©đđ©ââ€ïžâđâđ© and then thereâs probably Carol like: đ© (sheâs so over all this)
And then the ending! Iâm guessing P left without saying goodbye because she probably saw the text from Zoe and once again was promptly reminded of their reality? đ„ș
Speaking of Zoe, oh girl Iâm so sorry, you deserve better â like damn, she just wanted to share some fucking pizza!!
Also, jealous Azzi making an appearance! (Iâm such a shameful sucker for the jealous Paige and Azzi trope, Iâm sorry!)
Oh and one final thing on part 3 â babe I know you said writing **** was taking years off your life, but we really appreciate your sacrifice because it was absolute đ„đ„
Whatâs next (potentially)?
Oh man where to from here huh⊠I feel like Paige is eventually gonna get to the point where she's like "choose me, pick me", only to realise that Azzi just canât do it cause she can't trust her with her heart, and I know it's gonna hurt bad. And even though Paige needs and wants more, sheâll also take whatever she can get even if itâs slowly killing her, because itâs Azzi and sheâd rather have a little bit of her than none at all đ
Also, a tension-filled game between them in the final 4 coming up maybe??
That part where Katie shoots Azzi a look of disappointment â I wonder if momma Fudd will ever call out Azzi over whateverâs happening between her and Paige and poor Zoe?
Either way, something tells me weâve still got a lot of angst coming our way, and look as much as I want our babies to finally just get their shit together, I just canât say no to more angst you know, Iâm just a girl. đ€·ââïž
Oh and this part - sheâs even less sure about how sheâd survived that one year where theyâd practically lived in each otherâs skins â is this something (I'm guessing this is their covid era?) we go into a bit more?? I do love all the allusions/references to how long theyâve always been something more and the blurring of the lines but never fully crossing it obviously until that fateful summer of 2022. I guess it does explain somewhat, though, why Paige felt so betrayed about Azzi not choosing her (UConn) because baby girl probably thought âok once weâre both at UConn, we can finally be together đâ - like her dream/vision of them playing together and also being together got ripped away from her â€ïžâđ©č
As always, bestie, thank you for existing, thank you for your talent and for being so generous in sharing it with us. You outdo yourself every. fucking. time. đ
Quick non-ucla fic side note: ESPNâs Bracketology having Utah and UConn on opposing sides of the bracket, so basically theyâre saying Utah vs UConn championship game where I get to watch AP and PB ball out? Yeah ok, give it to me. đ€Ș #APHiveUP (but bleed blue always ofc)
Favourite quote/line:
âYou always say the right things,â Paige says quietly, and then even quieter, she whispers under her breath, âyou make it so hard Az.â
Big love always đ,
-đââïž
Hi bestie,
Omg I'm sorry....again đ
I was gonna wait a little longer with the fight but it felt right to have it in this chapter and I wanted it to be from Azzi's perspective because it would hit just a little harder
Poor Katie and Tim fr like they should have just gone on a cute date instead of having to deal with this craziness
The brothers are the biggest Pazzi shippers like they're actually tired of their sister's bullshit at this point. Drew with the biggest truth ever really just shut everybody else up. "GET OUR POOKIE BACK BEFORE I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING" - Drew Bueckers at some point probably
I was gonna add a line about Carol and Charisma just frowning at their teammates and being all exasperated and then fully forgot lmao but yeah UCLA and UConn are big mad at each other. Though writing Nika and KK are Muhl and Arnold felt so weird.
Bestie you might be the only person who got my hint which apparently was not as obvious as I thought đ
Zoe, poor girlie pop, y'all are gonna be absolute wrecked for her soon because girlie's just a sweetheart who does not deserve this but got caught in it anyway
Jealous Azzi might actually be worse than jealous Paige in this universe lmao but the waitress was doing *too much*
Part 4 is honestly a bit of a mystery to me because I've dug myself a bit of a hole but never fear, I will angst myself out of it somehow. đ
#APHiveUp YES EXACTLY BESTIE!! Utah vs UConn for the national championship because actually AP vs AE would be pretty fun too and listen not to get at my girl AP, but AE would win that and then UConn would win and that's the only valid ending.
As always, thank you for being here bestie. I love your long asks and how much you just get me and the UCLA fic which really wouldn't even be a thing without you.
Love you babes <3

Red Looks Good on You

Pairing: Georgia Amoore x Singer!reader (feat. Paige Bueckers & Azzi Fudd)
Fandom: WNBA-Washington Mystics
Summary: A jersey swap that turns into something moreâŠ.

If someone had told me back when I was stress-crying over finals at UConn that Iâd one day be court-side at a WNBA game in a Paige Bueckers jersey, next to Azzi Fudd and her dadâwhile catching actual butterflies over a maybe-crush on Georgia freaking AmooreâI probably wouldâve said they were delusional.
And yet, there I was. Right in the middle of it.
âRock, paper, scissorsâŠshoot!â
âUgh!â I groaned, throwing down scissors for the third time in a row. Paige smirked, smug as ever.
âThatâs three Ls in a row, Y/N. My jersey it is,â she grinned, tossing me her navy Dallas Wings jersey like she was handing me a win when really, Iâd just walked straight into her trap.
âYouâre so manipulative,â I muttered, tugging the jersey over my oversized tee.
âYouâre the one who kept picking scissors. Rookie mistake.â
Azzi cackled from the doorway of the hotel room, already scrolling through her camera roll. âI got that last round on video. You look like a loser, bestie.â
âYouâre my friend. Youâre supposed to lie to me.â
She just snorted. âYeah, but Paige is my girlfriend, so loyalty has levels.â
I rolled my eyes but grinned anyway.
Game day.
We arrived early, just as warmups started. The arena was buzzingâmusic blasting, kids bouncing in the aisles, players locked in their rhythms on the court. Azziâs dad, Tim, handed me a bottle of water as we settled into our court-side seats.
âShe still wearing your jersey?â he asked Azzi, nodding to me.
âShe lost a bet,â Azzi said without looking up from her phone. âPaige is annoying.â
âSheâs right there,â I whispered, nodding toward Paige and Arike who were warming up directly in front of us.
âOh, I know,â Azzi said, casually flipping her phone toward me. She had Paigeâs contact pulled up and was typing a text that read: She looks better in your jersey than you do, just saying đ
âYouâre chaos,â I whispered.
âI contain multitudes,â Azzi replied, smirking.
Then we heard someone behind us say, âOh look, Georgiaâs coming this way.â
My heart did a full gymnastics routine in my chest.
I looked upâand there she was.
Georgia Amoore.
Hair slicked into a messy but neat bun, crop top clinging to her like it was made for her alone, and her jersey in hand.
Literally in her hand.
My name caught in my throat.
Azzi noticed my silence and glanced up too.
âY/N,â she said, elbowing me lightly. âTry not to melt.â
âIâm not melting,â I whispered.
âYouâre steaming, sweetheart.â
Georgia reached us with a casual smile and a soft âHey.â
Her eyes flicked to me, lingering for a second longer than what was considered friendly, then shifted to Azzi.
âHey,â Azzi said, sitting up straighter. âWarmups going okay?â
âYeah, yeah,â Georgia nodded, looking at the jersey in her hands like she suddenly wasnât sure what to do with it. âI was just, uhâgonna give this to someone. But looks like I got beat to it.â
She gestured toward me in Paigeâs jersey.
âOhhh,â Azzi teased lightly, eyes dancing between us. âWe had a rock-paper-scissors match. Paige won.â
Georgia chuckled. âTough loss.â
Then, with a little shrug, she turned and handed the red Mystics jerseyâher own jerseyâto Azzi.
âI guess youâll wear it better anyway,â she said with a playful smirk.
Azzi blinked. âI meanâŠif you insist.â
And just like that, she slid it on over her crop top, much to Paigeâs immediate disapproval. From directly in front of us, Paige stared with an open-mouthed glare.
âReally?â Paige mouthed, mid-free throw warmup.
Azzi shrugged exaggeratedly. âWhat? Y/N has yours!â
âSheâs baiting her so bad,â I whispered to Tim, who just laughed.
Halftime.
âText from Paige,â Azzi announced, snickering as she flashed her phone. âShe said, and I quote, âTake. It. Off. Now.ââ
âWhatâd you say back?â
âI sent her a selfie,â Azzi grinned, scrolling to show me a picture sheâd just snapped. In it, she was dramatically pouting while wearing Georgiaâs red number 8. âCaption: Not until you say please.â
âYou are sick.â
âNot as sick as you, apparently,â she said, turning toward me. âYouâve been lowkey staring at Georgia this whole game.â
âNo, I havenât!â
âY/N. You literally asked me how to say âwhatâs upâ in Australian slang before the game.â
ââŠOkay, yeah, I did.â
She leaned toward me during a break in the music, voice dropping slightly.
âSoâŠdoes it smell like her?â
I blinked. âWhat?â
âThe jersey,â she laughed. âYou asked earlier.â
âI said that as a joke!â I covered my face. âUgh, thatâs so weird to say out loud.â
âI think it smells like cherry chapstick and intimidation,â Azzi said matter-of-factly, inhaling a little.
I gave her a horrified look.
âWanna smell it?â
âNo! Azzi!â
She burst out laughing and then got a mischievous glint in her eyes.
âYou wanna wear it for the second half?â
âWait, are we swapping jerseys?â I asked.
She grinned. âLetâs make Paige mad.â
We had one minute before the second half started.
I yanked Paigeâs jersey off and handed it over, exchanging it for Georgiaâs red Mystics one.
It was still warm from Azziâs body, a little oversized, and smelled vaguely like citrus and sport detergent.
âOkay, I get it,â I admitted.
Azzi smirked. âRight?â
She sent one last picture to Paigeâme now in Georgiaâs jersey, her in Paigeâsâand captioned it: Plot twist đ
After the game, the crowd was electric, buzzing out of the arena like bees.
Paige gave us both the stink eye before disappearing into the tunnel, and Azzi just blew her a kiss and skipped off to meet her dad.
I hung back, still clutching a Sharpie I never used because I chickened out getting Georgiaâs autograph earlier.
Then I heard it: âHey, red looks really good on you.â
I turned.
Georgia.
Again.
Close now. Up close enough that I could see the freckles on her cheeks and the light flush behind her ears.
âReally?â I asked, smiling.
She nodded. âYeah. Plus, Iâve never seen anyone wear the number 8 so well besides myself.â
I laughed, heart skipping.
âI was actually about to give this back to you,â I said, gently tugging at the hem.
She reached out, stopping me with a soft hand to my wrist.
âKeep it,â she said. âYou wear it better anyway.â
I looked at her, surprised.
âYou sure?â
âPositive,â she smiled. âJustâŠwear it somewhere cool.â
About two weeks later I had a show in Boston
I stepped onto the stage, mic in hand, lights low. My band behind me started playing something slow, sultry, unreleased.
The crowd hushed as the beat dropped.
I wore Georgiaâs jersey as a dressâbelted at the waist, paired with red boots. The number 8 was bold on my back, almost daring.
âThis oneâs unreleased,â I said into the mic. âI wrote it about a certain someone I maybeâŠkinda have a crush on.â
The crowd screamed.
Later That Night at a cozy diner in Boston.
We sat across from each other in a booth, milkshakes in hand, fries between us. Georgia wore a hoodie over her head, and I was still wearing her jersey.
âPeople are gonna start connecting dots,â I said, sipping my shake.
âLet âem,â she said, shrugging.
I smiled softly.
Then she pulled out her phone, snapped a blurry picture of our hands locked together, and posted it on her Instagram story.
Caption: On a date. Kinda nervous â€ïž@y/n.officially
It took about five seconds before I reposted it with my own caption:
âMe too đłâ€ïžâ
And just like that, the internet went insane.
But me?
I was calm for once.
Because red really did look good on meâespecially when it came from someone who made me feel seen.
