ok so a bit of background: in my mind, i have my own made-up company in a fantasy realm, where i am a designer for said company, and in my realm i made stupidvm (retitled to "tinycomputer" because, well, stupidvm doesn't convey a lot of... physicality) be like the "face brand" of the company, the primary line of the products produced. in the made up line of products were many, many variants of the tinycomputer, all using the same base architecture allowing for excellent cross-compatibility between computers.

ok so with that in mind, i decided to kind of make a mental image of a chip that handles all of the address decoding. now, the chip wouldn't be too complicated, it'd really just be a bunch of logic gates to control the OE/WE pins on the other chips, but this singular chip would be responsible for the entirety of what makes a tinycomputer, a tinycomputer. this would allow almost any kind of modification to it, including a completely different architecture, and, since the chip probably wouldn't touch the data bus, possibly even different word sizes! granted, you wouldn't be able to feasibly go beyond a 16 bit address bus, but other than that, the possibilities are nearly limitless

i am pretty much in love with how stupidVM's peripheral system works on the hardware level, or at least, how i imagine it would work on the hardware level in my mental model of a physical implementation of it.

the main module, the "platform" that the computer builds upon, is really only just the CPU, 8k RAM (non-banked), and support components. all the IO, graphics, sound, etc. are driven through the peripheral bus, which contains 16 slots of 16 bytes each. each device on the bus can operate however it needs to utilizing the 16 bytes of address space provided, giving it a clean slate for designing devices.

and, theoretically, you can have a device use more than one slot, allowing for more than 16 bytes of address space.

this highly modular setup helps with it being highly expandable and future-proof (although, today, 8 bit CPUs aren't exactly the high-end technology they once were)
