Researchers use tin to toughen bioimplant titanium alloys through the cocktail effect

Beta(β)-type titanium (Ti) alloys are renowned for their strength, formability and resistance to harsh environments. This, along with their excellent biocompatibility, has made them adequately suited for implants and prosthetics, from joint replacement to stents. However, under certain conditions, a brittle omega phase can form, making the material prone to breaking. While it is known that adding tin (Sn) negates this, and makes β-type Ti alloys stronger, the exact mechanics behind this has continued to puzzle scientists. That is until now. A research team led by Norihiko Okamoto and Tetsu Ichitsubo from Tohoku University's Institute for Materials Research (IMR) has revealed how this occurs. Their revelation came via a systematic investigation using model titanium–vanadium (Ti–V) alloys, which included a combination of experiments and theoretical analyses.

Stainless steel looks just like sterling silver but it doesnt tarnish. At all. It's good for sensitive skin and those with allergies. And is not expensive cause people usually pass it up for other metals. (Usually marked as 316L).

If you want actual precious metals like gold, I've found really good pieces for a fraction of the price on clearance sections of major jewelry stores like Kay, but also Nordstrom Rack consistently has great stuff marked down to like 1/3 of the original price.

Avoid gold-plated and vermeil "gold". It's the most shallow coating of gold and scratches off or turns color in no time. Otherwise, gold-filled looks just like solid gold and if you take care of it, it should last a long time.

Decarbonization of automobiles not only requires a shift from gasoline engines to electric motors, but also quality steel parts that help the motors run while lessening the weight of vehicles. High-performance steel materials can offer quieter rides and resist the wear and tear from high-speed rotation in motors. To create them, the process of modifying the steel surface with carbon, nitrogen, and alloy elements needs to be optimized. To understand the interactions between elements in steel, a systematic investigation has been conducted by an Osaka Metropolitan University research group led by Associate Professor Tokuteru Uesugi of the Graduate School of Informatics. The group theoretically calculated 120 combinations of how 12 alloy elements, including aluminum and titanium, interact with carbon during carburization and nitrogen in the nitriding process. The results showed that when titanium is placed in a specific arrangement, it bonds with nitrogen or carbon, hardening the iron. The group's analytical data also showed that the alloy element must have a larger metallic radius than the iron atom to bond well.
