Touhou Spell Carnival launches November 19 in the west - Gematsu

Bullet hell strategy RPG Touhou Spell Carnival will launch for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Switch on November 19 in the west, publisher Idea Factory International announced. It will launch both physically and digitally in North America, and digitally in Europe, with a physical release to follow on December 3. It will feature Japanese voice-overs with English, French, and Spanish subtitles.

A Digital Deluxe Edition will also be available for $69.99, which includes the base game, a 57-page digital art book, and a 49-track digital soundtrack.

Usres who purchase either the digital standard or Digital Deluxe editions within the first two weeks of launch will also receive the “Gensokyo Safe Adventure Pack,” which contains the following in-game items:

About

Gensokyo—a remote land isolated from the Outside World, where humans and youkai live side-by-side. One day, the shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine, Reimu Hakurei, spots mysterious pillars towering over various locations throughout Gensokyo. These pillars signaled the start of the Spell Carnival, a festival hosted by Yukari Yakumo where one must put their Spell Cards on the line in battle. In order to investigate the true intentions of Yukari Yakumo, who initiated the Spell Carnival so suddenly, Reimu Hakurei joins the fight for Spell Cards.

What is Touhou Project?

Touhou Project is a bullet hell shoot ’em up game created by ZUN’s group, Team Shanghai Alice. Set in the isolated land of Gensokyo, various incidents, known as disturbances, arise from different causes. The story follows the main protagonist, Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine, as she and her friends resolve these disturbances.

Touhou Project fangame got featured on behind the voice actor website this year.

To see it featured this week on a website as popular as imdb is quite the achievement for the Touhou fanbase.

Yeah, this is definitely thanks to several touhou fan-games having a surprising budget behind them. Unlike ZUN, the fan-games tend to have small teams (indie sized) behind the game and some of these people have enough money to hire professional voice actors to perform for the game....either that or they're willing to take the bet that they'll make the money back.

I wonder how it feels to go from working on an anime production to working on a touhou fan-game.

Just letting Touhou And Puyo Puyo Fans know (or remind in case anyone already knew this) that there is going to two games from Compile Heart coming out next year. One is a Touhou Tactical RPG called Touhou Spell Carnival that cooperate elements from the bullet hell games.

The other is Madou Monogatari 4, a sequel to the RPG series that Puyo Puyo spun off from and also a series that hasn’t received a game in decades with many people who work the series in the past coming back to work on it.

Nothing too big.

The curtain rises on a spell card competition in Gensokyo! A “bullet hell” battle spanning 30 days is about to begin!

What is Touhou Project?

Touhou Project is a bullet hell shoot ’em up game series created by the ZUN-led development circle Team Shanghai Alice. Set in Gensokyo, a land isolated from the outside world, the story follows protagonists like Reimu Hakurei, shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine, as they settle disturbances called “anomalies” caused by various factors.

■ Story

Gensokyo—a remote land isolated from the outside world, where both humans and youkai exist. One day, the Hakurei Shrine shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei notices “mysterious pillars” that have risen up over various parts of Gensokyo. The pillars were the signal that Futousai, a festival organized by Yukari Yakumo in which participants battle for spell cards, had begun. To uncover the true reason behind the Futousai started by Yukari Yakumo, Reimu Hakurei joins in on the spell card competition.

■ Characters

Reimu Hakurei (voiced by Mai Nakahara)

Ability: Can Fly in the Sky to an Extent

A shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine in Gensokyo. She spends most of her time at Hakurei Shrine, which sees little visitors, where she cleans, slacks off, and drinks tea while taking it easy. Her specialties include youkai extermination and resolving the anomalies that occur in Gensokyo.

Marisa Kirisame (voiced by Yumi Uchiyama)

Ability: Can Use Magic to an Extent

An ordinary magician who is both curious and a troublemaker. She runs the Kirisame Magic Shop in the Forest of Magic. Although a contrarian, she can also be straightforward, competitive, and hardworking.

Touhou Spell Carnival is due out for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Switch in spring 2024 in Japan.
