Trancers II (1991)
Film review #330
SYNOPSIS: Six years after defeating Whistler and deciding to stay in the past, Jack Deth has adjusted to life in his new time with his now wife, but the future is not done with him yet, as Jack’s old boss visits him and tells him that Whistler’s brother must be dealt with, and an agent has already been sent to deal with him and must now be rescued, who turns out to be Jack’s dead wife...
THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: Trancers II is a 1991 film and the sequel to the original 1984 film. Set six years after the first film, Trancer Jack Deth is living with his now wife Lena and facing all the problems of married life rather than trying to save the future. However, back in the future, Deth’s old boss McNulty is not finished with him, as it turns out that Whistler, the man Deth defeated in the previous film, has a brother, E.D. Wardo, that has gone back in time to create an army of “trancers” in order to take over the future. McNulty travels back to the past to inform Deth that his dead wife has also been brought back to the past just before she died to stop Wardo. The film centres around the role of “trancers”, specialist cops who are able to travel through time to inhabit the bodies of their ancestors (sharing some similarities with the Assassin’s Creed franchise). This can produce some bizarre consequences, such as Deth’s boss McNulty travelling back and inhabiting his ancestor, which turns out to be a teenage girl. Most of these possibilities were explored in the first film, so it mostly just gets on with it in the sequel without trying to explain the mechanics too much. The intro does however suffer with this, as it’s difficult to follow what is going on, especially if you haven’t seen the original in a while.
Trancers was always a cheap version of action films such as Terminator, and never quite had the impact of other films in the genre. The concepts are perhaps a bit too sci-fi to capture mainstream audiences, and the budget isn’t really there to make it a compelling sci-fi franchise. Nevertheless, the orginal spawned five sequels, so someone certainly wanted it to succeed. Trancers II really has more of the same as the original, with plenty of entertaining action and all the other staples you would need in a film such as this. The plot is fairly standard, and even with some confusing points, you can see where it is going. The love triangle between him, his now wife and his previously dead wife plays out how you expect it to, and like the first film, there is an awful lot of Deth intensely kissing these significantly younger women, which starts to get a bit weird. Wardo as the villain isn’t particularly interesting, and his plans never seem too threatening. The film is definitely at its best when it isn’t trying to develop its story, and just does some action and fighting, which there are plenty of. The film seems to have a big plot hole too, as Deth’s wife returns to the future in her ancestors body, which seems to suggest she has produced a paradox seeing as her ancestor cannot have a child if she is taken out of the present.
The character of Jack Deth needs to be compelling enough to carry a film such as this, and he never really rise to the occasion. He gets a few funny one-liners and racks up a decent body count, but that’s about it. The film looks and feels cheap, with no fancysets or effects, and the sound effects are the usual library of stock sounds. Overall though, I think Trancers II plays to its strengths by focusing on action sequences, but this sequel doesn’t expand the world of Trancers or explore the interesting mechanics that it establishes: it is essentially just more of the same. It is mildly entertaining and easy to watch, but the story is full of holes and struggles to make sense when it isn’t blowing things up or killing people.

Barbara Crampton had a quick cameo. Honestly a waste of a perfectly good Barb. Would have made a great second female lead across from Helen Hunt.
