#Transistor Q

Note
I saw your transistor au and I'm in love with it 😍 What abilities do you think the thieves would have? Would they be the same as the game or something else? 👀
ehe thank you im glad you enjoy my scribbles about it (i will draw more soon bc brainworms)
for the q - honestly i have not thought that far if we are talking about functions ٩( ᐛ )و
im assuming anyone who has played the game can probably match who i based the thieves on but it only goes so far as who they are in cloudbank and how they contribute to the city as citizens but very loosely. it’s more fun to me to play sandbox pre-transistor events but i digress!!
thinking about it now, im not sure if i want their abilities to stick too closely to the game? for example, i based yusuke off farrah yon dale - because the concept of a skypainter who could not paint anymore is very delicious - but her function switch() doesn’t feel like yusuke? compared to say ryuji where i took some inspo from olmarq and wave tennegan but respectively the function load() and cull() could potentially work for him. open to being convinced though if you have any thoughts ✨

Systech - overdrive
"Have you ever played a pedal that stuck with you forever, even though you knew in your heart it was totally weird, and nobody famous ever used it? For me, yeah, tons of them. But if I had to pick one that best fit these criteria, this one would be it. This is the Systech Overdrive. Before we dive in, let’s talk a little about where it was made.
There was a time when, of all places, Kalamazoo Michigan was an epicenter for musically related things. Apart from being a city referenced by Looney Tunes and the hometown of Glen Miller’s gal, Kalamazoo had the Sound Factory, which was a collective of sorts that featured guitar luthiery, a recording studio and electronic gear manufacturing. The facility sat front and center on Kalamazoo Avenue, smack dab in the middle of the city, and attracted visitors from all over.
Of course, if it was some random outpost of nobodies, the name wouldn’t carry any weight. However, the Sound Factory was shored up by three relatively heavy hitters of the early ‘70s. One such was Greg Hochman, Keith Emerson’s Moog technician. He was joined by Bryce Roberson, otherwise known as Uncle Dirty of Chess Records fame and a relatively unknown person named Charlie Wicks. If you’ve been reading this column for a while, you’ll recognize him as the man behind ProCo—the Ratfather.
Together, these three developed Systech, which itself was short for “Systems & Technology in Music, Inc.” That mouthful of a company was responsible for the Harmonic Energizer, a little-known yet highly influential effect that provided a deep filtered sound in addition to some crunchy drive and sharp resonant peaks. You might know it as one of Frank Zappa’s signature pieces. And while this Overdrive effect wasn’t that, it was derived from the Harmonic Energizer and shares a handful of characteristics.
Basically, if dialed in just the right way, the Harmonic Energizer will make short work of an entire speaker cabinet and anyone in the audience. This is because it was designed to provide a staggering gain of 55dB, enough to cause serious damage to your gear or hearing. The Overdrive was created to get some of those tones at non speaker-shredding levels.
If you’re thinking this unit is some kind of proto-Tube Screamer, think again. Because this was the early ‘70s, nobody had really decided exactly what “overdrive” meant. And though Maestro (coincidentally, also in Kalamazoo) had created one of almost every effect under the sun, pedal fever wasn’t quite here just yet, so Systech was essentially “winging it.” With that said, the Overdrive is actually a pretty aggressive fuzz sound. And to that end, the fuzz circuit is pretty unique. The entire affair contains two transistors—one a JFET input buffer—and one dual op-amp with a handful of other components. Even the topology is relatively simple, but the simplicity ends with the schematic.
The EQ control works unlike pretty much any EQ control you’ve ever fiddled with; as much an EQ as the whole unit is an overdrive. Instead of a simple tonal adjustment, the EQ control is actually an active bandpass filter, in the same family as a wah circuit. With a simple twist of a knob, you can adjust this filter from 122Hz to 900Hz. As you might imagine, the EQ control sounds relatively cocked-wah-esque, but the sound is much more aggressive than any wah on the market before or since. The reason has to do with the Q factor, essentially a bandwidth control. A wah’s Q is set by its 33K resistor and is much wider than that of the Overdrive, so the tone is a little more rounded. While a wah’s filter is a rubber mallet, the Systech Overdrive’s is a tack hammer. While the sound is curious, the thing really comes to life when you crank the EQ control, as it gives you a nice punch in the mids. You lose a little definition when you get to the bottom third, but man is it fun to play with.
“Distortion” is just what it sounds like, but curiously enough, “Gain” is about as close to a volume knob as you’re going to get. Much like Distortion, if you turn it all the way down it kills the entire signal, but it sits behind a final gain stage. If you have the guts to crank both Distortion and Gain, you’re richly rewarded with gobs of gooey sustain, but the flipside is that your amp is likely screaming “uncle.” Worth it? Your call. I say go for it.
Many people say Zappa used a Systech Overdrive, but alas, he did not. However, when you play it, you can definitely see the similarities between this unit and the fabled Harmonic Energizer. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s close enough for rock and roll."

Sloppy Heads - TV Eye, Ridgewood, New York, January 27, 2023
Is there a new Sloppy Heads record out? Yes, there is a new Sloppy Heads record out! Sometimes Just One Second just dropped on the Shrimper label and — dare I say it — it's the best Heads yet! Ariella Stok, Bill the Drummer, and Jimmy Jumpjump (AKA your friend and mine Jesse Jarnow) have crafted a sprawling masterpiece this time around: 75 minutes of sweet jams, fuzzed-out pop, cracked balladry and even a delicious Dead boogie.
Extra props to Yo La Tengo's James McNew, Ladybug Transistor's Gary Olson, Pee Wee's Playhouse artist Gary Panter and legendary animator Al Jarnow for making this a truly special collection. For a little more detail, check out this recent Jarnow + Jarnow Q&A on Aquarium Drunkard.
I like the RIYL that came along with the Sometimes Just One Second promo, so I'll just reprint it here:
RIYL: WFMU, Mutant Sounds blog, Half Japanese, Yo La Tengo, The Fugs, Seastones, Kluster, Crazy Horse, The Godz, Yoko Ono's Approximately Infinite Universe, Bonzo Dog Band, Pep Lester, Spotted Dick, X, Jefferson Airplane, The Vaselines
You like all that, don't you?! I do. I also like this short live video via the great Roolin YouTube channel of Sloppy Heads out in Ridgewood. Loose as a goose, right as rain.

superpowered sex. i think its nifty!!! they should have kinky, wacky, power playing sex in the ways only they can: super strength kink, superhealing w pain kink, iron man armor in bed, etc. i do NOT understand why more people aren't exploring this at all times.
hurt/comfort!!! it's ideal. PAIN and then SOOTHE, makes the brain go whirrr. i like that they are sparring partners and superheroes/adventurers and i wanna lean into that and also talk about how sexy they look covered in blood and dirt and maybe crying or emotionally distraught too keke
team dynamics/team as family! i'm really very compelled by the intricacies of all team interactions. i think one of the most narratively ripe things about comics is how everyone's world/conflicts/superhero ongoings are very complex and layered at the same time. it gives you a lot to work with and also i'm a sucker for found family shite!
pursuant to the last: worldbuilding. i fucking love a detailed look into comics universe or nuances of extremis or stories about wartime and steve, etc. all details are good details and i crave that mineral !! it's so atmospheric and a lot of what i'm personally invested in writing.
transness in all forms! transgendering, transhumaning, transistoring, transmutating, transfiguring, transit-ing, trans!. it's my favorite way to explore and i think more folks should do it. :'))))))

Boosted Heat in Ryzen Chips :AMD’s Sizzling Secret
Tumblr media
AMD Expects Higher Density Ryzen Chips to Increase CPU Temperatures
It would seem that AMD is of the opinion that, in light of recent developments in Ryzen Chips density, the average temperatures of CPUs will continue to rise with subsequent generations of Ryzen Chips.
AMD is collaborating with TSMC on the optimization of process technology, but the company anticipates that Ryzen Chips central processing unit temperatures may rise in the future due to the increased density of Ryzen Chips.
The central processing units (CPUs) made by AMD with the model number Ryzen 7000 are currently the most power-efficient processors on the market for client computers. The Zen 4 core architecture that they pack promises huge benefits in both single-threaded and multi-threaded performance.
These improvements are the result of greater number of transistors plus numerous modification to the development. However, this additionally results in a significant increase in the interior temperature of the central processing unit (CPU), considering that additional transistors move into a smaller amount of space.
At their default settings, the most recent Ryzen 7000 CPUs, which go by the codename Raphael, generate an extreme amount of heat. They often reach the top Tjmax of 95C while doing any work that places a high demand on the CPU and need a great deal of cooling performance in order to be overclocked.
Q. The CPU temperature is one of the complaints leveled against AMD desktop products. Although the temperature is greater, the CPU power consumption is obviously lower than that of the competition. Will there be a future solution to these temperature problems? Is it not feasible to place a fake die adjacent to the CCD die in order to promote heat dissipation?
A. To make significant progress in process technology, we are actively collaborating with TSMC. We also need to be able to ensure the stability and quality of semiconductors. We think that the high heat density phenomena we now see will either persist or become more intense in the future as more sophisticated methods are used. Consequently, in the future, it will be crucial to figure out how to efficiently reduce the high heat density produced by these high-density chiplets.
Furthermore, the TDP 65 W device has outstanding overall performance. He feels that this is a crucial component to take into account when creating a future roadmap in order to guarantee a healthy balance between TDP and heat generation based on these product examples.
Even while AMD anticipates that this trend will continue in future generations as chip density continues to improve, the CPUs may also be undervolted in order to maintain practically the same level of performance while seeing temperature reductions of up to a few degrees Celsius.
A thermal density chart that illustrates the amount of heat being expelled via the die’s reduced surface area is also shown below:
Intel Corporation is additionally of the view that the total amount of heat generated from CPUs will keep on growing in the not-too-distant future. The manufacturer’s recently released 14th Generation CPUs constitute some of the fastest processors readily accessible, exceeding a maximum operating maximum temperature of basically hundred degrees Celsius.
Given this, motherboards designers have raised the temperature requirements over 115 Celsius degrees, causing the transistor to keep working at the temperatures of greater than 121 temperatures Celsius.
Therefore, according to Intel engineers, it is predicted because contemporary processors are made to run at their peak temperature for extended periods of time. When it comes to CPU throttling, AMD’s CPUs demonstrate that even when they reach their thermal thresholds. This is similar to stating that you must push your chip to its absolute limits in terms of power and thermal capacity if you want the best possible performance.
According to this, we should anticipate seeing a trend toward greater temperatures in the next AMD and Intel CPU generations. We are hoping that the improvement in performance will offset the increased heat emission to some extent. One thing is certain: makers of cooling equipment will take a more creative approach and create fresh designs for systems that use both liquid and air cooling.

Gary Olson talks afternoon into evening! (interview by Eric Eggleson).
It’s been a while since I caught up with Gary Olson of The Ladybug Transistor; he’s quite the busy guy, but he’s never too busy to take time out of his schedule for Dagger. When he told me about a reunion tour and an amazing concert in Norway, I had to find out more.
How did you end up in the Norwegian festival? (Egersund)  The Ladybug Norway connection goes back a couple of decades now. We had a lot of opportunity to play there in the early 2000s after Albemarle Sound was released. Audiences were great and we developed a lot of lasting friendships. It seemed like a natural place for a reunion.
Tumblr media
What was it like playing the old tunes again? How much preparation went into practice?  Oh, so much fun! It really brought home that we had four distinct writers (Gary, Jeff, Jennifer, and Sasha) in those days and our individual styles rounded into something special. We chose a set list months in advance and made notes… Everyone came prepared as we only had four days for rehearsals. We practiced in Norway as most of us live in different cities these days. Julia and I are in New York, Sasha is in Montana, Jeff is in Burlington, and Jennifer is in Pittsburgh.
How did you choose your setlist?  We got together in 2019 to play the entire Albemarle Sound record for its 20th anniversary so we stuck with what worked best from that set and added some of the stronger material from Argyle Heir and Self-Titled.
Many great bands at Egersund, which were you excited to see?  There was so much to see in those few days! High Water Marks, Minus 5, No Ones, Rishis and Teenage Fanclub. A new band called Colored Lights really stood out. They have an LP out soon that you should check out.
Did you join any of them on stage?  Sasha and Jennifer sat in with the No Ones for a song.
Tumblr media
How long were you in Norway?  A few weeks. We arrived early to settle in, practice and do some sightseeing… hiking in the fjords. It’s a spectacular place to spend time in the summer. I did a duo tour with Ole Johannes (The Loch Ness Mouse) following the Ladybug show so that kept me there an extra couple of weeks.
The Elephant 6 documentary also aired; was that your first time seeing it? Yes, glad to finally see it. I was waiting for the opportunity to watch it on the big screen in a proper theater. Jeff Baron took part in the Q & A, along with Hilarie from Apples (and The High Water Marks), and Adrian from Elf Power.
Let’s move on to the reunion tour. Why only these five venues? We had a show at The Andy Warhol Museum booked in fall of 2020 and that got postponed during the pandemic. When they rescheduled for this year, we decided to build a little tour around it. Five shows seemed manageable. If it goes well, we will certainly be open to more.
Why these venues? Have you played at them before?  We’ve played at Schubas in Chicago many times, but it’s been a while. We played Warhol ages ago. The rest are all new to us.
Any chance for more dates later?  2024 will be the 25th anniversary of The Albemarle Sound so I hope we have the opportunity to do something special. Feel welcome to make any suggestions!
Tumblr media
Will you be bringing merchandise? (My t-shirts are getting small!)  Yes, working on that now. Sasha is an astrology enthusiast and says this is meant to be the year of Ladybug’s return so we may make some comet themed merch.
Any news on opening acts? Kyle Forester and his band will open in Brooklyn. It seems especially appropriate as he’s been such a good steward to Ladybug through the years. Giant Day (Derek Almstead and Emily Growden) are opening in Pittsburgh. And we've just confirmed that Derek will be joining us on drums for the November dates.
Will you be playing any new songs? Just the oldies, but It would be fun write some new ones with them.
And now some updates on your production work. What bands have you been working or will be working with? Finishing some of Phil Sutton’s projects, Love Burns and Pale Lights. He’s a constant in the studio. I just completed an album for Auguste Juillet Meets The Swedish Miles, which is Jay (Hough) from Sapphire Mansions latest project. That should be out later this year. I worked on the new Sloppy Heads album that was recently released. Give them all a spin!
Are you writing any new music? Your solo album came out in 2020 (Wow, where did the time go?). Loved that, I’m also a huge Loch Ness Mouse fan! How did that come about?  Ole Johannes from Loch Ness has been a close friend since my early visits to Norway. We started writing songs together along with his brother Jørn about six years ago and that evolved into an album. It’s a great partnership and we will do more.
Tumblr media
Looks like Let’s Whisper is your most recent release. (That also includes Jeff!)  Yes, it’s always great to work with the Vermont crew.
I see Jennifer is releasing another The Garment District album in the fall.  Very excited for Jennifer’s new Garment District album. I got a preview of the vinyl, and it looks and sounds wonderful.
Well, there you have it, Gary is as friendly today as he was back when I interviewed him many years ago. (Time to check the Dagger archives.) I’ve listed the venues and ticket websites if you’re interested in catching this reunion tour. I know I won’t miss this one. I’m hoping the tour goes well so more cities can be added.

"Sometimes I build myself fun little things, just to see how they would sound. This is a MKI that I made for myself. It’s loaded up with period correct 1965 “Made in England” Clarostat pots, Arrow brand wafer dpdt footswitch and a matched set of 3x Mullard branded “British Made” transistors. Along with 1960’s Erie carbon ceramic resistors and Wima TFF & Sprague Vitamin Q caps, it’s a fun little machine! I wish I could offer more of these, but those transistors are very expensive and tough to find."

Advantages of Fast q Switch Driver
The circuitry for driving the Fast q switch driver has been improved to produce high-voltage pulses. The pulses must increase quickly in order for the Q-switch to be fully open prior to each laser pulse in order to draw out the most energy from a laser cavity in the form of reliable laser pulses. The Q-switch drivers currently in use produce high-voltage pulses that rise quickly enough to account for the brief times required for the evolution of laser pulses, but many conventional Q-switch drivers also produce high-voltage pulses that are so brief that precise timing is required to ensure that the laser pulses occur while the Q-switches are fully open. The variability of the laser pulse evolution time with variations in the storage and loss of laser pumping energy exacerbates the timing issue and narrows the range of operable operating settings. Neither capacitor needs to be discharged in order to discharge the other into the transformer. Two rapid-rise, long-duration Q-switch pulses can be created by releasing them in quick succession.

With timing becoming much less crucial, improved Laser diode driver offer high-voltage pulses that rise quickly and are nearly square in shape. These pulses last long enough to accommodate a wider range of laser pulse evolution times, allowing lasers to operate more consistently and efficiently under a wider range of operating conditions. The enhanced circuits can also produce a number of quick succession high-voltage pulses.
By discharging a capacitor through a step-up autotransformer made precisely for the needed pulse operation, a driver circuit of this type produces a high-voltage pulse.
An enhanced Q-switch driver that can produce two pulses quickly after one another. The voltage on each of the capacitors C1 and C2 is clamped at a value less than that of the power source. The output pulses are made more nearly square by the clipping action of diodes, which also decreases ringing and prevents overshoot. Control logic circuitry allows for the selection of single- or dual-pulse operation. Each capacitor's discharge path runs through a field-effect transistor switch. By connecting the capacitor's positively charged terminal to the common power supply rail, the switch starts the discharge process.

#Transistor meaning how to#
#Transistor meaning series#
The Transistors used in this tutorial are BC547 NPN Transistor and were added with all the above-mentioned components in the circuit, as shown below. The below diagram represents the above-explained circuit to build an AND gate using NPN Transistor. The inputs A & B are connected to the base terminal of Transistor 1 and Transistor 2, respectively and the output Q goes to the positive terminal LED.
#Transistor meaning series#
The circuit represents both the inputs A & B for the AND gate and Output, Q which also has a +5V supply to the collector of the first transistor which is connected in series to the second transistor and an LED is connected to the emitter terminal of the second transistor. One LED (Light Emitting Diode) to check the output. Two 10KΩ resistors & one 4-5KΩ resistor.(You can also use PNP transistor if available) The list of components required to build an AND gate using an NPN transistor are listed as follows: The logic of an AND gate is explained above already and to build an AND gate using a transistor we will follow the same truth table shown above.
#Transistor meaning how to#
This article will explain to you, how to build AND Gate circuit using transistor. The circuit symbol for each of them can be seen below. The device can be used as a switch and also as an amplifier to change the values or control the passing of an electrical signal.įor building an AND logic gate using a transistor we would be using BJT transistors which can be further classified into two types: PNP and NPN – Bipolar Junction Transistors. TransistorĪ transistor is a semiconductor device with three terminals that can be connected to an external circuit. Hence, for an AND Gate the output is HIGH only when both the inputs are HIGH. The equations output can be easily explained using the AND Gate Boolean Equation, which is Q = A x B or Q = AB. The relation between input and output values can be explained using the AND Gate Truth Table shown below. AND Logic GateĪND logic gate is a D-shaped logic gate with two inputs and one single output, where the D shape in between the input and output is the logic circuit. But the focus of this article will be on the AND Gate because later we would be building an AND Gate using a BJT transistor circuit. There are many different types of logic gates and each of them has a different logic which be used for different purposes. They state the relation between every input and output of a system using an Arthmetic logic. From the basic Flip-Flops to Microcontrollers Logic gates form the underlying principle on how bits are stored and processed. Logic Gates are the basics of a many digital electronic circuit. Similarly a Flip-Flop can be built by using a combination of Logic Gates and the Logic Gates itself can be built by using a few Transistors. Like an Operational Amplifier or 555 Timer IC is built by combination of many Transistors, Flip-Flops, Logic Gates and other combinational digital circuits. As many of us know an Integrated Circuit or IC is a combination of many small circuits in a small package which together performs a comman task.
