Standout rookies bump heads as Heat face Warriors
One of the league’s best road teams will encounter a hot home squad when the Miami Heat open a five-game trip with a matchup against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night in San Francisco.
The Heat have won three in a row overall and three straight on the road to improve their record away from Miami to 9-6. At the start of play Wednesday, only the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks had more road wins, each with 10.
Miami, however, ruled out forwards Jimmy Butler (calf) and Caleb Martin (ankle) as well as guard Kyle Lowry (soreness) for Thursday’s game. Guard Josh Richardson (back) remains doubtful for the contest.
Miami is coming off a 119-113 home win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Christmas. Impressive rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr. contributed career highs in points (31) and rebounds (10) to the victory.
Making just his seventh start, Jaquez became the first rookie in 38 years to post a 30-point/10-rebound double-double in a Christmas Day game. Only four rookies — Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Walt Bellamy and Patrick Ewing — previously had accomplished the feat.
“Great to get a win, career night, Christmas,” Jaquez said after the performance. “I grew up watching these games, and to be able to play and have a career night, I just go back to all the hard work, late nights in the gym, preparing for moments like this.”
Most of those moments took place in Southern California, where Jaquez was born (Irvine), went to high school (Camarillo) and played 134 games for UCLA the past four seasons.
The 22-year-old will be returning to California for the first time in his NBA career at the start of the Heat’s trip. He will head to his old stomping grounds for matchups against the Los Angeles Clippers on New Year’s Day and the Lakers next Wednesday.
Jaquez has started the past three games in place of Butler, who has been bothered by a strained right calf. Butler made the trip to California but won’t play in the Golden State game.
The Warriors lost their Christmas Day showcase 120-114 to the Denver Nuggets on the road. The Miami meeting begins a run of seven in a row at home for a team that’s won its past eight games inside its own building.
Jaquez wasn’t the only rookie with a historic performance on Christmas. Golden State’s Brandin Podziemski had 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals in the defeat.
No rookie had posted that combination of stats in any game since Ben Simmons did it in 2017. The last Warriors rookie to do it was Purvis Short in 1978.
Also, his season-best steals total made him one of just three Warriors rookies in the past 20 years to swipe five in a game, joining Stephen Curry (twice) in 2010 and Eric Paschall in 2020.
Podziemski has teamed with fellow rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis to ignite a Warriors turnaround in recent games with Draymond Green on suspension. Golden State had a five-game winning streak snapped in Denver.
Curry noted neither he nor his teammates are surprised by the improved play of late, which has followed much national scrutiny over the team’s slow start.
“It’s been like that for years now, even before we won the ’22 championship,” Curry said of media negativity. “They always find something to nitpick, and that’s because there’s expectations for us to win. So you kind of take that in stride.
“For me, my approach is to dumb it down to just … win a game at a time, give ourselves some momentum, some confidence, some energy.”

Gameday Central: Rutgers 83, Illinois 74; 1:42 to play | Sports
Sunday afternoon basketball. Type of good. Beat author Scott Richey will likely be tweeting up a storm. Observe alongside all day:
Tweets by srrichey
***
At the moment’s recreation is nearly a matchup between a high 10 offense and a high 10 protection.
Illinois checks in at No. 10 in KenPom when it comes to adjusted offensive effectivity. The Illini are fifth nationally in efficient subject purpose share at 60.1 %, which is buoyed by being ranked seventh in three-point share at 43.2 %.
(It is right here the place it is good to notice KenPom solely makes use of knowledge from Division I vs. Division I video games. Not that Illinois or Rutgers has performed a non-Division I crew this season. Others have, although, and their stats can be inflated if these video games had been counted).
Rutgers is simply outdoors the highest 10 at No. 11 in adjusted defensive effectivity. The Scarlet Knights aren’t a high 10 crew in anyone class, however they rank effectively in a number of. The very best? Rutgers is holding opposing groups to a 42.6 efficient subject purpose share.
Illinois coach Brad Underwood likes the concept of the (simply not fairly) high 10 showdown between his offense and Steve Pikiell’s protection.
“First Massive Ten highway recreation, right here we go,” Underwood mentioned. “It is in opposition to an amazing opponent — and really deserving of their rating — in Rutgers. A veteran crew. A crew that has glorious perimeter play and is likely one of the high defensive groups within the nation. They’re very related on that finish of the courtroom.
“A crew that has nice athleticism and add Cliff Omoruyi within the center. It is a crew that not solely has actual athleticism within the paint, (however) now they’ve depth. They have two or three guys with legit measurement that defend the entrance of the rim.”
***
That is the beginning of a tricky stretch for Rutgers. 5 of the Scarlet Knights’ subsequent six video games, together with at this time, are in opposition to AP High 25 groups. After the Illini, Rutgers will get two video games in opposition to Ohio State and one every in opposition to Iowa and Michigan State.

Extra to know on the Scarlet Knights:
— For the primary time in 42 years, Rutgers was ranked within the preseason AP High 25. Nonetheless ranked, too, after all.
— Rutgers’ 5-0 begin options 5 double-digit victories. It is the primary time the Scarlet Knights have began 5-0 with 5 double-digit victories for the reason that 1934-35 season.
— Junior wing Ron Harper Jr. was within the KenPom Participant of the Yr standings after Rutgers’ win in opposition to Maryland, however has since dropped out. His presence made it 4 Massive Ten gamers within the high 10. Nonetheless ranked are Iowa’s Luka Garza at No. 1, Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis at No. 2 and Illinois’ Ayo Dosunmu at No. 4.
***
Illinois will solely play two video games at house this month. The primary was Tuesday’s blowout victory in opposition to Minnesota. The opposite? A post-Christmas showdown with Indiana on Dec. 26.
In any other case, together with at this time, Illinois has performed away from house. Seven video games in December, 5 away from house.
9⃣0⃣ minutes from tip-off on the RAC! #Illini | #EveryDayGuys pic.twitter.com/DVtOPQAvrG
— Illinois Basketball (@IlliniMBB) December 20, 2020
This is a couple of different notes to get you prepared for at this time’s recreation:
— Illinois hasn’t began 2-0 within the Massive Ten for the reason that 2013-14 season when it beat Indiana in extra time after which Penn State. Each had been at house. The extra time win in opposition to the Hoosiers was a battle between Rayvonte Rice (29 factors, eight rebounds) and Yogi Ferrell (30 factors).
— A win at this time at Rutgers can be the primary Massive Ten highway opening victory since 2010-11 in opposition to Iowa. Demetri McCamey had 20 factors and was one in every of 5 Illini in double figures within the 87-77 victory in Iowa Metropolis.
— After the Dec. 8 win at No. 10 Duke in Durham, N.C., Illinois may beat consecutive ranked highway groups for the primary time since March 1-8, 2014 (at No. 18 Michigan State and at No. 24 Iowa).
***
Assume again just some years in the past and picture if any individual informed you Illinois and Rutgers had been enjoying in a matchup of AP High 25 groups. Arduous to think about, proper?
The Illini had fallen on exhausting occasions. The Scarlet Knights had been outgunned at each flip after becoming a member of the Massive Ten. A high 25 rating for both crew was a pipe dream.
However right here we’re — No. 13 Illinois enjoying at No. 19 Rutgers. The rationale? Each groups nailed their newest teaching rent.
Illinois plucked Brad Underwood from Oklahoma State and the rebuild started. Touchdown key gamers like Ayo Dosunmu, Kofi Cockburn and Andre Curbelo/Adam Miller in consecutive lessons pushed the Illini into the highest 10 forward of the 2020-21 season. That was, after all, aided by Dosunmu and Cockburn coming again.
Rutgers’ transfer hiring Steve Pikiell away from Stony Brook was simply as necessary. Pikiell rebuilt that program, too, going from single-win seasons in his first three to profitable at the very least 22 video games in six of his final seven earlier than getting the job in New Jersey. Queue one other rebuild, one which, up to now, has paid off for the Scarlet Knights.
Now it is a high 25 matchup at The RAC. Gone are the times of the schadenfreude of needing triple extra time to determine which crew is much less dangerous. These are two legit applications within the high half of the Massive Ten.
Who woulda thunk it?

New on Sports Illustrated: Boilermakers deliver winning road show at Indiana, 74-62
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Purdue finally figured out how to put together an impressive road show.
Just make shots.
Eric Hunter Jr. scored 12 points, Aaron Wheeler added 11 and Wheeler and Isaiah Thompson didn't miss a 3-pointer Saturday to send the Boilermakers past Indiana 74-62.
''saiah and Aaron between them are 5 for 5 (on 3s) so if you want to do something special and win at a place like Assembly Hall, you've got to have some guys step up and be special,'' Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said. ''We were tonight.''
They didn't have a choice.
The raucous crowd inside Assembly Hall started rocking early, in anticipation of seeing Bob Knight back on his home court for the first time in nearly 20 years.
Knight was introduced during a halftime ceremony along with former players, including members of the Hoosiers' 1980 Big Ten championship team.
But with Purdue's stifling defense forcing 14 turnovers and its offense showing signs of finally getting in sync, the Boilermakers (14-10, 7-6 Big Ten) could be on the verge of turning things around just in time for a postseason run.
They've won three straight overall, six in a row against the Hoosiers and now have back-to-back road wins after losing their first five in conference play.
''We just felt like mixing things up here the past two or three games, still running set but mixing in more motion (offense) doesn't get them sitting on every single thing. So hopefully we can catch them by surprise.''
Indiana (15-8, 5-7), in contrast, is struggling.
Despite getting 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists from Trayce Jackson-Davis, the Hoosiers lost their fourth straight and their second in a row at home. Justin Smith added 11 points and five rebounds for the Hoosiers, who trailed the entire second half.
Purdue needed just one good run - a 12-0 scoring spurt to close the first half - to swing the game. It gave the Boilermakers a 37-28 lead, which they extended to 54-38 with 12:39 left.
The Hoosiers responded with a 12-2 run, cutting the deficit to 56-50, but Purdue answered with seven straight points to put it away.
''Our turnovers in the first half really killed our momentum, and their run at the end of the half was really a deflating deal,'' Indiana coach Archie Miller said. ''But Purdue deserves credit, they executed well.''
BIG PICTURE
Purdue: The Boilermakers seem to have found some solutions to their previous woes. They've reached the 60-point mark in three consecutive road games, winning two of them. And with four of their last seven at home, where they score 17.2 points more per game, they could be set up for a strong finish.
Indiana: After beating Michigan State three weeks ago, it appeared the Hoosiers might make a move. Instead, they've taken a step back. The offense struggled to get in sync Saturday and 10 first-half turnovers certainly didn't help. Now, after four straight losses, Indiana needs a quick turnaround.
STAT PACK
Purdue: Sasha Stefanovic had 10 points. ... The Boilermakers were 8 of 16 on 3-pointers and had a 33-17 scoring advantage off the bench. ... Purdue also had a 28-20 edge in points in the paint.
Indiana: Jerome Hunter added 10 points. ... Indiana was 7 of 21 on 3s and had only four turnovers in the second half. ... The Hoosiers were outscored 11-1 in fast break points and fell to 12-3 at home.
GOOD KNIGHT
Miller is old enough to remember Knight as a coach and what made his teams successful.
His players, maybe not so much. But they do understand the significance of having the winningest coach in school history inside Assembly Hall, wearing an Indiana basketball sweatshirt.
''He's a legend,'' said Jackson-Davis, a freshman. ''He's the reason why people talk about IU basketball, really.''
UP NEXT
Purdue: Hosts No. 22 Penn State on Tuesday.
Indiana: Welcomes No. 17 Iowa to Assembly Hall on Thursday.

Klay Thompson’s brother Trayce had a historically bad month
Klay Thompson’s brother Trayce was an asset for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. This season has been a tail of the complete opposite.
Trayce, 26, is an outfielder in the Dodgers’ organization and was sent down to the minors after going 0-for-8 with three strikeouts to begin the season. The team probably figured he would see more action in Triple-A, which would benefit him. It hasn’t at all.
Trayce played his first game for Triple-A Oklahoma City on April 6 and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He continued to struggle for the next two weeks, as it took until April 24 until he recorded his first hit of the season. The next day he went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts.
After getting his first hit, Thompson finally had a batting average, but it was an embarrassing .032.
Thompson went 1-for-43 (.023) in the month of April at OKC. If you combine his stats at both levels, he went 1-for-51 (.020) in April.
Trayce Thompson's .019 batting average is the worst hitting month in history for anyone with 35+ PA and it's not particularly close
— Robot Chicken Puppet (@chicken__puppet) May 2, 2017
There is one caveat to that stat, and that is the statistic takes into account time split at both levels for Thompson, but not for others.
Still, no matter how you slice it, Thompson had a terrible month and will be happy to put it behind him. He may be on his way to improving as well, as on Tuesday he recorded his second hit of the season, boosting his batting average in the minors to .038.
Thompson certainly is capable of doing much better. He has batted .243/.316/.459 with 19 doubles and 18 home runs in 127 career MLB games. Maybe this is one of those things where he’s stuck in a funk and has lost confidence. That can happen in the extremely tough sport of baseball.
