Black Horror Tropes

I was incredibly overwhelmed by the documentary Horror Noire. This documentary delves into a century of horror films that used and exploited Black Americans in Hollywood. Horror Noire opened my knowledge to an array of familiar tropes that Black people are expected to fulfill for white audiences. We commonly see that Black figures in movies are side characters cast to help white people resolve their dilemmas. For instance, in The Shining, Dick Hallorann is a typical Black magical character that exists to spread knowledge of the supernatural world. Jezelle Gay Hatman, in the movie Jeepers Creepers, is a psychic who sees an evil dream about Trish and Darry. Another trope we often see is the sacrificial Black person who is the first to die, protecting the white person. White directors assigned these roles with their preconceived notions of Black people and what they meant to them. Needless to say, the representation of Black people is, most of the time, incorrect and perpetuated by white directors for their benefit.

Moreover, throughout history, I have learned that white filmmakers want Black actors to be what they believe the Black identity to be. However, directors such as Spencer Williams defy these stereotypes and reclaim the Black identity. William, Son of Ingagi, does this exactly as he depicts his all-Black cast as middle-class people who are husbands, wives, scientists, lawyers, and detectives. Casting Black people in this way was a breakthrough. Another more recent and modern example is Get Out by Jordan Peele, who created Chris, a Black protagonist, as the hero and white people as the villains. Peele’s movie reverses familiar tropes we see throughout the history of Black Horror and eliminates the white perspective, which commonly decides how Black people are defined. Instead, the movie is depicted through a Black lens and frames racism as the monster in the film. My absolute favorite scene from Get Out is when Chris picks cotton from his chair, plugging it into his ear to stop his hypnosis state. It is incredible how Chris can avoid white people from owning his body by repurposing the use of cotton, a symbolic remembrance of a type of labor used during slavery. 

I begin to learn so many insightful topics from this class and the documentary Horror Noire that I hope to continue learning to expand my knowledge of Black Horror. Along the way, I'm excited to watch a myriad of films I've never had the opportunity to watch before.

“Y/N we need you to come in, you’re in need to work with an FBI team we brought in to help.” My boss says.

“Okay I’ll be there in 20.” I reply and hang up. I gatger Luke and his go bag that i have packed and ready to go in case of something like this. I enter my son’s room and gently shake him awake. “Lukey, sorry baby but mommy has to go to work.”

“Okay.” He whispers tiredly and opens his arms for me to pick him up.

Sure I work from home but if I am needed at HQ i must go. I can’t just wait around.

I walk cautiously and quickly towards my car and hurriedly put my now sleeping 2 year old into his car seat.

I take the 5 minute drive to the 24hr daycare at the hospital and check him in. I watch as he gets placed into a bed and make my way back to my car keeping my hand in my gun in case of an attack.

“You called sir.” I ask my boss.

“Yes, I have brought your old team in for this case.” He says.

“I’m sorry but there’s a conflict of interest. My son’s father is on that team. I didn’t leave on good terms with them. Either take me off the case or take him off. Your choice!” I reply.

“I see, is that why you had a change of heart when I first gave you the offer?”

“Yes.”

“I will make an enquiry.” I head towards my team’s technical analyst, Frankie’s, office.

Frankie and I have developed a close friendship almost as close as the one that Garcia and I had when I was still at Quantico.

While our team is out on a case, we work from my place or in the office bonding over our kids, cute animal photos, Disney and love of Italian food.

“Y/N!” I hear a squeal from behind. I turn around and am faced with a short plump woman with purple hair running towards me.

“Penelope?! Oh my god! It’s been what 6 monts?!” I squeal back.

“I know right! I was told to meet Frankie, I assume you’re heading there now.”

“Sure am! I’ll show you the way.”

Taking every twist and turn to get to the dark gloomy hallway.

I.T was always a dark art in the HQ. All tech analysts kept to themselves and never spoke to other members of the FBI. In fact, tbeybwere often forgotten.

However that was until I showed up. At Quantico we all talked to and love the tech crew so coming here to find that no one really talks to them was really concerning. I.T is used on every case it’s not very practical when you don’t know who the most important person on the team is.

That’s why I made the effort to get to know my team’s tech analyst, Frankie.

“Frankie?” I call knocking on the purple door.

“Y/N, come in. And who might this be?” Frankie asks as she opened the door.

“My best friend Penelope Garcia. My old team’s tech analyst, they’re helping on this case.” I reply. “Garcia this is Frankie.” I watch as the two hug and Frankie helps Garcia set up.

“This is so much better than my office!” Garcia exclaims.

“I’ll leave you two to it.” I go to leave but Frankie pulls me back.

“If your old team’s here then what about Spencer?” Frankie asks.

“I don’t care. Every time I call offering him to see Luke he’s been rude and disrespectful! I never knew Spence had it in him but he’s lost the opportunity that’s why I filed for full custody of Luke.”

Garcia spins violently in her chairand stares blankly. “Boy Wonder did what?!” Garcia yells.

You see after my anger and sadness had sort of passed I reached out to Spencer to spend a weekend up here (if he didn’t have a case). As much as I hated myself, I did it for Luke. I didn’t want Luke growing up without a father.

But instead Spencer’s response being hopeful and grateful that he gets to see his son at all. His tone was dismissive and rude. I did expect that after all I did move with our son states away.

So I called at another time maybe 9 months after that (about 1 year after we broke up). He was pissed off again. But I was hopeful that he’d send something for Luke for his birthday but he didn’t. Nothing.

I made one final call 6 months later and this time he answered then hung up. I made attempts but then he blocked my number.

Call my obsessive or clingy but I just wanted what’s best for my son and now what’s best is if he doesn’t know who his father is until he is much older.

“It’s fine Penelope. I’ve made my decision and now he doesn’t get to see his son at all. He has made no effort while I gave him opportunities. Hell I spoke to Emily!” I state.

“That’s why she was so adamant of him staying home for the last case!?” Garcia asks, i nod.

“You’re staying here.” Frankie says.

“I can’t hide forever!” I smile at the two girls and walk back out.

I hold my head up high and shake out any negative thoughts. Since Spencer I had been on several dates but none of them brought the satisfaction both sexually and mentally as Spencer.

Maybe it was just because Spencer was always innocent in a way. Too shy to say anything and didn’t want to do thibgs in case he made me uncomfortable. For example, hand holding or his hand resting on my thigh.

Hand holding and just a casual hand on the thigh are normal in day to day relationships. I personally didn’t mind but Spencer? Spencer was the one that didn’t want to do it simply because he was afraid others wouldn’t like it or that I would get uncomfortable.

Sex was another thing. Even though we had had intercourse multiple times, he still got self conscious about himself. Whether he was bug enough or not, that’s just a normal thing.

I often worry about myself occasionally especially when it comes to sex but I don’t care in the end. In the end, i am who i am and I wouldn’t change that. But Spencer made it such a big deal, although sometimes I wonder if he did that on purpose.

“You got Spencer kicked off the case?!” JJ screams at me as i enter the lobby.

“JJ.” Emily warns.

“What!? She took his child and blamed me for their break up!” JJ yells again.

“I think it’s safe to say we hear Y/N’s side of the story.” Rossi declares.

“I would like to know what Reid said.” I reply to the crime writer.

“That you didn’t give him time to respond and that you left. You never called or anything.” Luke replies.

“Okay that’s bullshit.” I reply. I tell them everything.

How on that case Spencer looked at JJ like he looked at me. How I confronted him and he said nothing, I paused to give him tike to respond but he didn’t.

I told them how I phoned him every month to see Luke but never took my offers. Hell, I told them I went through Emily to try to convince him.

“Believe who you want but know this, Garcia can pull my phone records!” I say, I walk right up to JJ. “Don’t you ever tell at me and bring my son into this, understand?! What he did was lie and manipulate and you were the cause. ‘Oh Spence, I’ve always loved you’. Cut the crap JJ.”

With that I walked away, “Agent Trish, I’m taking myself off the case. Put Spencer back on, you’ll need him.” I say to my boss as i pass him.

“Agent Y/L/N.” He retorts, i turn around to face him.

“I didn’t know you had an issue with some members of your old team. I will request for a new team.” Agent Trish says. He was old, he may be 2 or 3 years older and reasonably cute but dating or sleeping with your boss? Not a good look.

“That will be much appreciated sir.”

“Not a problem.”

I head back to Frankie’s office, my head hangs low. How was i going to tell Garcia?!

“Garcia?” I ask glumly.

“Yes? Oh god what’s wrong?!” Penelope asks.

“I got you guys kicked off. JJ was rude so I yelled at her and i took myself off the case but um. My boss seemed to think otherwise and is sending you guys home.” I whisper to her.

“That’s okay. Want me to stay a few nights. We can catch up and have a girls night. Frankie can come too.” Garcia suggests. Frankie smiles and nods excitedly.

“That would be wonderful, i just feel so terrible though Garcia.”

“I know. It’s okay. I understand, it’s not your fault. It’s Spencer’s.”

That’s when it really hit. Everything. The pain that I’ve had to hide for 2 years finally surfaces. My body shakes as i give in. My warm tears trickling down and drying to my cheeks.

“That’s it! Girls night starts now! Let’s head back to yours, Y/N. We’ll take our computers.” Frankie says.
