अक्षय तृतीया भारतीय वैशाख मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया तिथि को मनाई जाती है। ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर के अनुसार यह अप्रैल-मई के महीने में पड़ता है।

 कहा जाता है कि इस दिन सूर्य एवं  चंद्रमा दोनों ही अपने-अपने सर्वश्रेष्ठ अवस्था में होते हैं। इस दिन को 'अखा तीज' के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

हिन्दू धर्म में इस दिन को अत्यंत शुभ माना जाता है। हिन्दू धर्म एवं जैन अनुयायी इस त्यौहार को विक्रम संवत के नए साल के पहले त्यौहार के रूप में मनाते है। 

अक्षय तृतीया का इतिहास

पौराणिक कथाओं एवं प्राचीन इतिहास के अनुसार यह दिन कई महत्वपूर्ण घटनाओं के  प्रतीक के रूप में मनाया जाता है जैसे -

मान्यता अनुसार भगवान गणेश और वेद व्यास ने इसी दिन महाकाव्य महाभारत की रचना की थी।

इस दिन को भगवान विष्णु के छठे अवतार भगवान परशुराम की जयंती के रूप में भी मनाया जाता है।

किवदंती अनुसार इसी दिन देवी अन्नपूर्णा का अवतरण  हुआ था।

इस दिन, भगवान कृष्ण ने अपने गरीब मित्र सुदामा को धन और धन लाभ दिया था, जो मदद के लिए उनके बचाव में आए थे।

महाभारत के अनुसार, इस दिन भगवान कृष्ण ने वनवास के दौरान पांडवों को 'अक्षय पत्र' भेंट किया था। उसने उन्हें इस कटोरे के साथ आशीर्वाद दिया जो असीमित मात्रा में भोजन का उत्पादन करना जारी रखेगा जो उन्हें कभी भूखा नहीं छोड़ेगा।

मान्यता है ,कि इस दिन गंगा नदी स्वर्ग से पृथ्वी पर अवतरित हुई थी।

कहा जाता है कि कुबेर ने देवी लक्ष्मी की पूजा की जिसकी वजह से  उन्हें देवताओं के कोषाध्यक्ष होने का काम सौंपा गया।

जैन धर्म में, यह दिन उनके पहले भगवान भगवान आदिनाथ की याद में मनाया जाता है।
