The Comprehensive Guide to Successful Turkey Farming: Tips, Techniques, and Best Practices
Introduction Native to North America, the turkey is a large bird in the genus Meleagris. The wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) of eastern and central North America and the ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata) of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico are the only two species of turkey that still exist today. Turkey farming has been around for a very long time and has strong roots in agriculture. The…

Bird flu flies high - Tortoise

Bird flu flies high - Tortoise
Orders to keep all captive birds and poultry indoors will be extended across the whole of England to try to contain a virulent strain of bird flu that is threatening to wipe out some wild species.
The largest seabird in the northern Atlantic has a wingspan of nearly six feet.
From Yorkshire to St Kilda off Scotland’s northwest coast, birdwatchers gather to see it dive from heights of 30 metres, and hit the water at up to 60 miles per hour.
But now a virus tearing through Britain’s birds threatens the mighty gannet with extinction.
“Washed in with the tide, a dead gannet. A distressingly common site. Over the last couple of weeks here at Foxton, near Alnmouth, and on many of our region’s beaches…”
ITV News
In October last year, birds began shaking, convulsing, or showing signs of confusion as they flew.
Then, they started dying.
“Gannets, guillemots, kittiwakes and puffins have been found dead right around the coast of the UK from the Hebrides right down to the Isles of Scilly. In the domestic bird population – chickens, ducks, turkeys – around three and a half million have been culled.”
BBC Radio 4
The culprit? A new strain of avian flu, called H5N1.
It’s the deadliest bird flu outbreak that Britain has ever seen. And it’s spreading through wild birds like gannets, but also captive birds like chickens and turkeys.
Millions have already been culled to control it, but the virus is still spreading… which is why the government has extended measures to contain it.
***
Avian flu is endemic in birds, which means it returns every year during the winter months. But this year has been different.
Here’s Katie-Jo Luxton, the Director of Global Conservation at the RSPB nature conservation charity, speaking to the BBC’s Today programme.
“It’s really very concerning. We do want more action to understand the disease. We think at the moment we don’t know anywhere near enough about this disease, which appears to have become certainly more virulent and has stayed with us all year round for the first time ever.”
BBC Radio 4
Normally, cases go down during the summer months, but this year new outbreaks were recorded throughout June, July and August for the first time.
Experts aren’t sure why this is, though some say it could be down to a slight mutation in the virus.
While the government maintains that the risk to human health is very low, they’re concerned about the impact of the outbreak.
“If bird flu, for example, gets into turkeys, that could cause holy carnage. You know, that could cause real supply chain issues in the run up to Christmas time. You know, the realities of it are quite severe.”
Sky News
And the threat to wild birds could have a serious impact on the balance of Britain’s natural habitats.
***
Every winter millions of birds migrate to the UK.
But this winter it means the spread of this more virulent strain could be accelerated – and the consequences of that could last for decades.
“We’ve seen declines of between 55 and 80 per cent of the population of the Great Skua in the UK and we hold two-thirds of the world population. So that species has gone straight onto the red list. These birds are long lived; you’re talking about birds that don’t even start breeding for five years and they may only have one chick per year. So it might take decades before some of these populations recover.”
Sky News
The government has raised the national risk of bird flu in wild birds to ‘very high’.
Defra, that’s the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, introduced a bird flu “prevention zone” across the whole of Britain.
But they’re now introducing stricter measures. From next week, all captive birds and poultry will have to be kept indoors until further notice.
They stress that eggs and poultry are still safe to eat. And if you come across a struggling bird in the wild, Katie-Jo Luxton has some advice.
“We’re really urging people to make sure their dogs are on leads and not to approach dead or dying birds, because that can cause further stress, but also because some mammals have now picked up this disease as well. So please take extreme care and we’re saying to the members of the public: do not touch them. Make sure you report them to the Defra helpline.”
BBC Radio 4
If the new measures aren’t successful in stopping the spread then the sound of gannets on Britain’s coastline could be dulled – or may even disappear forever.
This episode was written and mixed by Patricia Clarke.

I promise this is a good-faith question: it’s something I’ve been grappling with for quite some time.
I (think I) agree with you that domestication is pretty much unilaterally wrong, and that no species should be further domesticated, and no current domesticated animals got that way without cruelty.
And I used to be anti-domestication of any kind, and also agreed with the “eventually domesticated animals, be they for food or labour or companionship, will just die out”… but lately I’ve been thinking that that is cruel and unjust and also just… has the same issues with biological control/“playing god” that domestication does.
if we brought a species into existence and forced it to evolve in a way that it can’t exist without human stewardship anymore, do we then still have the right to withdraw the stewardship and let that (sub)/species disappear? is it not more complex than that? it’s kind of like, your mess, now you have to deal with it as ethically as possible. you made these animals exist in relation to you, you can’t just disappear their existence because you realised the actions of your ancestors was unethical.
idk. I’m very confused and I dwell on this exceedingly often. personally it makes no difference to me/my impact — I would never own a pet — but I really, really want to get to the fundamental truth of this.
they'd still exist. street dogs, wild dogs would exist, cats will certainly always exist, they're everywhere. but they'd exist outside of our homes, not controlled or bred by us. like i mentioned before, turkey, and mena nations are an excellent examples. cats have roamed the land there for thousands of years. they get shelter to stay in the nooks and crannies of human made societies, and things like water, protection if they're ill or injured, etc. and the biggest reason; food. not food we give them, but pests. rodents. so, we wouldn't have to feed them for them to be safe and healthy. they protect our food, and get to eat in the process. this is a symbiotic relationship. many farmers still have it, allowing feral cats to roam around and sleep in their barns because they kill rodents that destroy crops.
this a natural and equal relationship. although it'd be more complicated in nations where pets were introduced, and have caused devastation to natural ecosystems, like my country of new zealand. it would be much better for us to try and humanely phase out cats here completely or as much as we can through desexed. we have big capture, desex, and release programmes here. multiple of our unique bird species have gone exist forever because of cats and dogs, and literally HUNDREDS more are at risk, endangered, or critical because of introduced carnivores. so, some places need pets gone.
phasing our cats and dogs as pets doesn't mean they won't exist. they'll always exist, as they have in their nations of origin. they just wouldn't be pets. your playing god argument doesn't make sense when the most "ethical" thing would be to...just stop breeding. and because cats and dogs are uncontrollable in regards to mating, desexing is the best method. it in fact prevents major suffering because cats and dogs in mating season are highly aggressive and it's when most fights and injuries occur. there is risk of cancers to those reproductive organs because since we keep them in our houses, they live longer and generally get more chronic and long term diseases. another thing is that because they're introduced to nations where they don't struggle and have little competition, as well as major protection from humans because "awww, cute", they breed at such high levels that there is not enough resources for them and mass amounts die when the resources are low in the wild. this is the natural predator-prey cycle, but because of our influence on cats and dogs and their general survive and thriving in urban areas, this occurs on much bigger scales than it would for other feral animals, who have less babies that survive to adulthood, that live shorter lives so don't consume so much resources, etc. by allowing mass populations by both pet ownership, lack of desexing, and introduction into countries with no competition, we've created situations of mass suffering of these animals. countless are put down every day because it's considered kinder than keeping them on the street ridden with disease and injuries, but there's not enough human homes to take them in.
what you are sad for is POTENTIAL, FUTURE, cats and dogs. ones that don't exist. cats and dogs don't comprehend the future, their descendants, the gravity of having kids, they don't care. they want food, social affection, shelter, and comfort. that's it. they don't care about "well, humans created me as a breed so that means i should keep existing". they have no god, no beliefs in what they are or should be. that's you projecting existentialism onto them. breeds are not species, they are human altered genes to change superficial structures and features. there's a reason why dogs can have offspring with wolves. breeds look very different, but genetically they are near identical, and so the only thing lost if the breed no longer exists is what self concerned human pleasure one derives from it. so, we give the living ones the best life we can, while undoing the damage we've done, and not participating in the selfish act of domestication and viewing them as tools or something beneath us that we can use to benefit us in some way, even if for emotional gratification.
but, it's just a lot simpler than that; if we stop breeding and desex all pets, which is the vegan view as we have no right to breed or continue this cycle and as animals do not have the capacity to understand that the current situation is not ethical from a human point of view, we have to do the facilitation through desexing. then the end result can only be that pets do not exist anymore, only strays. and in places where those pets cause major damage and aren't naturally supposed to be there, those strays are then adopted if they're able to, and go through the same process until there's few or none left. in countries of origin, the exist in the world as they always have, as wary but willing to trade allies.

The FAO estimates that if women had the same access to productive resources as men, yields on their farms could increase by up to 30%. But they don’t. In an echo of the introduction of the plough, some modern ‘labour-saving’ devices might more precisely be labelled ‘male labour-saving’ devices. A 2014 study in Syria, for example, found while the introduction of mechanisation in farming did reduce demand for male labour, freeing men up to ‘pursue better-paying opportunities outside of agriculture’, it actually increased demand ‘for women’s labour-intensive tasks such as transplanting, weeding, harvesting and processing’. Conversely, when some agricultural tasks were mechanised in Turkey, women’s participation in the agricultural labour force decreased, ‘because of men’s appropriation of machinery’, and because women were reluctant to adopt it. This was in part due to lack of education and sociocultural norms, but also ‘because the machinery was not designed for use by women’.
It’s not just physical tools that can benefit men at the expense of women. Take what are called ‘extension services’ (educational programmes designed to teach farmers science-based practice so they can be more productive). Historically, extension services have not been female-friendly. According to a 1988-9 FAO survey (limited to those countries that actually had sex-disaggregated data) only 5% of all extension services were directed towards women. And while things have slightly improved since then, there are still plenty of contemporary examples of development initiatives that forget to include women – and therefore at best don’t help, and at worst actively disadvantage them.
A 2015 analysis by Data2x (a UN-backed organisation set up by Hillary Clinton that is lobbying to close the global gender data gap) found that many interventions simply don’t reach women in part because women are already overworked and don’t have time to spare for educational initiatives, no matter how beneficial they may end up being. Development planners also have to factor in women’s (lack of) mobility, in part because of their care responsibilities, but also because they are less likely to have access to transport and often face barriers to travelling alone.
Then there’s the language and literacy barrier: many programmes are conducted in the national language, which women are less likely than men to have been taught. Due to the low global levels of female education, women are also less likely to be able to read, so written materials don’t help either. These are all fairly basic concerns and shouldn’t be hard to account for, but there is plenty of evidence that they continue to be ignored.
Many development initiatives exclude women by requiring a minimum land size, or that the person who attends the training is the head of a farming household, or the owner of the land that is farmed. Others exclude women by focusing solely on farms that have enough money to be able to purchase technology, for example. These conditions are all biased towards male farmers because women dominate the ranks of poor farmers, they dominate the ranks of small-scale farmers, and they are overwhelmingly unlikely to own the land that they farm.
In order to design interventions that actually help women, first we need the data. But it sometimes feels like we’re not even trying to collect it. A 2012 Gates Foundation document tells the story of an unnamed organisation that aimed to breed and distribute improved varieties of staple crops.28 But ‘improved’ is in the eye of the farmer, and when this organisation did its field-testing it spoke almost exclusively to men. Male farmers said that yield was the most important trait, and so that was the crop that the organisation bred. And then it was surprised when households didn’t adopt it.
The decision to talk only to men was bizarre. For all the gaps in our data we can at least say that women do a fair amount of farming: 79% of economically active women in the least developed countries, and 48% of economically active women in the world, report agriculture as their primary economic activity. And the female farmers in this area didn’t see yields as the most important thing. They cared about other factors like how much land preparation and weeding these crops required, because these are female jobs. And they cared about how long, ultimately, the crops would take to cook (another female job). The new, high-yield varieties increased the time the women had to spend on these other tasks, and so, unsurprisingly, they did not adopt these crops.

Thessaloniki Queer Arts Festival (TQAF) is a grassroots initiative that sets out to alter deeply entrenched misconceptions and prejudices toward the queer and LGBTQIA community through artistic and cultural practices.
TQAF’S VISION
The festival was founded by Tomas Diafas in 2018, together with a dedicated team of volunteers, who endeavour to provide queer artists with a platform to investigate sociocultural phenomena relating to queer identities and experiences. TQAF has been formed through collaborations in which our team has collectively curated the festival programme.
The festival is driven by the belief that art has the power to open new avenues of communication as well as serve as a bridge between a diverse array of individuals and social groups. TQAF aims to foster dialogues and develop alternative methods for addressing social discrimination.
Through a series of online interventions, TQAF 2020 aims to offer the opportunity for underrepresented LBGTQIA artists, writers and activists from across the Balkans and other selected regions to reveal their practice to a spectating audience from 20-28 June, 2020. This year, TQAF will be showcasing selected works, performances and workshops digitally.
THESSALONIKI
Thessaloniki is strategically located between the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East, regions where LGBTQIA communities are often marginalised. As we develop strategies for addressing prejudice and resistance to queer inclusiveness in Greece, TQAF will serve as a political and inspirational link to neighbouring societies. As a breeding ground for queer discourse and artistic creation, we hope that the festival’s impact will extend beyond the borders of Greece.

The Once-Extinct Aurochs May Soon Roam Europe Again
After a decade, scientists are getting close to bringing back the massive wild cattle.

When the Swedish armies descended upon Poland in 1655, they laid waste to the kingdom and pillaged whatever they could. Among the spoils stolen from the city of Jaktorów was one of King Sigismund III’s most prized possessions: an ornate drinking horn, longer than a grown man’s arm and as thick as an elephant tusk. Although the artistry was exquisite, the horn’s true value had little to do with the metal wrapped around its circumference. In life, the horn had belonged to the last aurochs bull, who died in 1621.
Today, the horn, which resides in Stockholm’s Royal Armoury, is one of the few surviving remnants of the wild cattle that roamed Eurasia and North Africa for more than 250,000 years. Like so many of Europe’s megafauna, the aurochs met their end at the hands of humans. Their horns were such coveted hunting trophies that by the Middle Ages, their numbers had already fallen. The species officially went extinct in 1627, when the last cow died in Poland.
Standing six feet tall and weighing more than 3,000 pounds, with horns more than 4.5 feet from tip to tip, these mighty herbivores were once a sight to behold. Paleolithic people painted them on the walls of caves around the region. The Celts associated them with Cernunnos, a god of the underworld. The ancient Romans pitted their finest gladiators against them. “These are a little below the elephant in size, and of the appearance, color, and shape of a bull,” wrote Julius Caesar in Commentarii de bello Gallico. “Their strength and speed are extraordinary; they spare neither man nor wild beast which they have espied.”

For more than a decade now, scientists have been seeking to bring back this keystone species—and they’re getting close. While the aurochs themselves may be gone, their genes live on in most modern European cattle breeds. Somewhere along the way, our Neolithic ancestors in Iran and what is now Turkey managed to domesticate aurochs, rather than simply hunt them for food. The Chillingham white cows of northern England, the Spanish fighting bulls of the Iberian Peninsula, and the Chianina of Tuscany all carry substantial portions of their DNA. Since 2008, the Tauros Programme in the Netherlands has been working to back-breed aurochs. The Auerrind Project, which launched in 2013, currently has five breeding herds in Germany. Both organizations share research and, occasionally, breeding stock.
“Looking at the calves from this year, especially the bulls, they have a lot of potential,” says Claus Kropp, a trained archeologist and leader at the Auerrind Project. “We’re really on the right track. If we continue a careful selection for the next 10 years, we could potentially have a stable population by then.”
Indeed, the third generation of animals currently grazing in southwestern Germany look an awful lot like their Neolithic predecessors. The largest of the bulls clocks in at just shy of six feet and more than 2,200 pounds, with horns that rival those ancient skulls in size. Most of the bovines in question are a mix of Sayaguesa, Watusi, Hungarian steppe cattle, Maremmana, and Chianina genes.
Fortunately, the Auerrind Project has a large amount of data on the animals they are striving to recreate. Extensive written documentation and illustrations paint a clear picture of the size and appearance of Europe’s aurochs. Along with historical records, the Auerrind Project has the fully sequenced DNA of three aurochs. Thanks to data obtained by DNA testing bones at the University of Kiel and radiocarbon dating of bone material found in the Upper Rhine Valley, the scientists even have a sense of the genetic variations in different regional populations of aurochs.
Tumblr media

“We know the DNA of this animal and we can compare that with the modern-day cattle DNA, which can yield some pretty surprising results,” Kropp says. For instance, the Holstein, otherwise known as the humble dairy cow, shares about 95 percent of its DNA with an auroch. With older breeds, that percentage is even higher. “The distance from the aurochs to the Pajuna cattle from Spain is just 0.12 percent, so there is more than a 98 percent overlap.”
Genetic distance isn’t the only factor when it comes to successful back-breeding; scientists also have to look at phenotypic traits. A number of heritage cattle breeds still visually resemble aurochs, even if none is a perfect match. For instance, those Spanish Sayaguesa cattle are a dead-ringer when it comes to coloring, but have the wrong horn size, while the Italian Chianina boast enormous horns, but with shaggy, white coats.
“When you take all the breeds that are supposedly close from a genetic side, but also from a phenotypical point of view, you have a chance to maybe get to results in quite a fast amount of time,” Kropp says. Speedy results in genetic terms translates to years, given that a pregnant heifer spends 10 months gestating. Still, that’s soon enough to start considering the potential ramifications.
Bringing species back from extinction is often a contentious business. It’s also an increasingly urgent topic, given that most experts believe we’re living through a mass extinction. By some estimates, human negligence robbed us of half the earth’s biodiversity in the last half century.
Tumblr media

The Auerrind Project and the Tauros Programme are far from the only organizations trying to bring back species from oblivion. Last year, a startup called Colossal scored $15 million in initial funding to try and bring back wooly mammoths using CRISPR technology. The Australian Lazarus Project has been focusing on a species of frog that birthed its young through its mouth, while the Passenger Pigeon Project hopes to bring back the birds that were once so numerous that their migration once blocked out the sun. Ever since scientists genetically sequenced the Tasmanian tiger, which died out in 1933, using a set of teeth in the Australian Museum, they’ve been talking about trying to clone them back to life.
Much like with still-living endangered species, time and financial resources in de-extinction often go towards charismatic megafauna. Yet Kropp and his colleagues insist that their focus on aurochs isn’t simply because they’re, well, cool. In contrast to cloning mammoths and other species, back-breeding programs are decidedly lower in risk. For one thing, there is no danger of reawakening ancient pathogens. For another, scientists have little concept of how the Tasmanian tiger or wooly mammoth behaved; with no living populations to draw on, teaching herds of clones to survive in the wild is a daunting task.
More importantly, in ecological terms, aurochs haven’t been gone long enough for nature to fill the gaping hole left in their wake. Like their counterparts on the North American and African continents, large grazing herbivores such as European bison and aurochs played a critical role in biodiversity.
“A grazed landscape with large herbivores looks very different from a modern meadow from an industrial agricultural company,” Kropp says. The Auerrind Project has been closely monitoring both the flora and fauna in controlled environments with their bovines. “Even in these small environments, the biodiversity is exploding even within a couple of years. I don’t think it’s by chance that our first grazing site was the first sighting of the beaver again.”
“Even in these small environments, the biodiversity is exploding within a couple of years.”
Both the Auerrind Project and the Tauros Programme are part of Rewilding Europe, a nonprofit which has been reintroducing bison, lynx, elk, and wolves around the continent. Thanks in large part to the foundation’s efforts, European bison, which were once all but wiped out, have increased in numbers to more than 7,000 over the last decade. More than 12,000 wolves—more than in the United States—now inhabit Europe, including Iberian wolves in Portugal and Italian grey wolves in the Alps. At the core of the whole project is the European Wildlife Bank, which relies on large herbivores to restore habitats and usher in the return of other species.
“We often call grazers ‘landscape engineers,’ because they play a vital role in shaping landscapes and driving natural processes,” says Laurien Holtjer, head of communications at Rewilding Europe. By disrupting forest growth, these mammals created varied terrain, all the while fertilizing the ground and distributing seeds with their droppings. “The natural disturbance of large grazers in low, natural numbers play a pivotal role in restoring mosaics of vegetation [and] stimulating more biodiversity.”
But reintroducing large animals is not without its problems and pushback. Both politicians and farmers often resist rewilding and its inherent disruption. Wolves in particular have drawn all sorts of ire, despite clear evidence that they’re a boon to healthy ecosystems. In 2017, the first European bison to make its way into Germany in 250 years was almost immediately shot dead. Once a breeding population of modern-day aurochs exists, the challenge will be convincing humans to live with them. “With wildlife coming back, we also need to ensure that we learn again how to live with them,” Holtjer says. “And in such a way that people benefit from wildlife returning, for example through tourism and wildlife watching.”
Tumblr media

“If you do it right, of course, coexistence can be possible,” Kropp insists. While the Auerrind Project’s breeding population is not meant for domestication, they’re going to great lengths to avoid creating animals that might attack humans. That’s why Spanish fighting bulls, which bear a striking physical resemblance to aurochs, aren’t in the mix.
Also noticeably absent in the Auerrind Project’s stock are Heck cattle, the striking, aggressive breed created in the 1920s by two German zoo directors, Heinz and Lutz Heck. Despite the lack of modern-day knowledge of genetics, the Heck brothers both claimed to have recreated aurochs through back-breeding. Heinz even wrote, “The wild bull, the aurochs, lives again.” Disturbingly, these early attempts at creating aurochs dovetailed with the fascist politics of the time. Lutz in particular, who was a member of the Nazi Party, convinced Hermann Göring that the return of ancient European beasts like aurochs and tarpan, or wild horses, fit with the the National Socialist Party’s ideological push to recreate an imagined European past.
Tumblr media

Genetically speaking, the Heck cattle are still a far cry from aurochs. A small number of their surviving descendants can be found in Oostvaardersplassen, an experimental rewilding area in the Netherlands. Both Dutch and German scientists are, understandably, quick to distance any current efforts from this dark period in European history. Back-breeding any species is not about misguided attempts at nationalism, but rather about an attempt to restore balance to environments devastated by humans.
“What is unique to our project is that we’re coming from that museum background,” Kropp says. “We have a strong viewpoint on the educational side. We want to inform the public why these large herbivores play an important role in these ecosystems.”
So far, the Auerrind Project’s efforts at promoting ecotourism are going well. Since the project is connected with the Lauresham Laboratory for Experimental Archeology in the UNESCO Global Geopark Bergstraße-Odenwald, part of its mission is to showcase what a Medieval European landscape would have looked like. On guided cycling tours, visitors have the chance to see some of the ecosystem that was all but lost.
“It’s not hard to impress people when you have these really large bulls in front of you,” Kropp says. Most of these gawkers have never experienced the sense of wonder that the presence of these giants evokes. “You actually have that safari feeling. It’s something they wouldn’t expect from our landscapes anymore. You don’t see these really wild animals anymore. Most of our large herbivores and carnivores have been gone for so long.”

The Thessaloniki Queer Arts Festival has welcomed proposals from across disciplines, including but not limited to visual artworks, poetry and writing, workshops, performances, video and film, community interventions and talks or lectures that investigated the question: What is Identity?
These will be presented through physical interventions in Thessaloniki, as well as through a curated series of social media, blog, and website posts and videos, according to the needs of each selected project.
Through a programme of physical and online interventions, TQAF 2021 aims to offer a platform for underrepresented LGBTQIA+ artists, cultural practitioners, writers and activists from across the world to share their practice and connect with peers in the months of May, June and July in 2021.
The festival will explore themes of performed identity, colonialism, lived histories, trans experience and the ever-changing and dynamic construction of the self.
ABOUT
Thessaloniki Queer Arts Festival (TQAF) is a grassroots initiative that sets out to alter deeply entrenched misconceptions and prejudices toward the queer and LGBTQIA community through artistic and cultural practices.
TQAF’s VISION
The festival was founded in 2018, and is led by a dedicated team of volunteers, including Tomas Diafas, Dominic Sylvia Lauren, Vassia Magoula, Evi Minou, Aristea Rellou, Annie Tsevdomaria and Magda Vaz, who endeavour to provide queer artists with a platform to investigate sociocultural phenomena relating to queer identities and experiences. TQAF has been formed through collaborations in which our team has collectively curated the festival program.
The festival is driven by the belief that art has the power to open new avenues of communication as well as serve as a bridge between a diverse array of individuals and social groups. TQAF aims to foster dialogues and develop alternative methods for addressing social discrimination.

Importance of Crop Wild Relatives and Landraces Genetic Resources in Plant Breeding Programmes and Their Conservation | Chapter 11 | Advances and Trends in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 3
Plant genetic resources are the biological basis of global food security. Agricultural diversity and genetic resources should be used more effectively to sustain the current level of food production and to solve future problems. The importance of plant genetic resources in the improvement of varieties with new features is indisputably known. The most effective use of plant genetic resources is undoubtedly in plant breeding and improvement of new varieties. In other words, it is used as a genitor. Since the cultivars are often inadequate in many genes, especially biotic and abiotic stress factors (diseases, pests, cold, drought, etc.) breeders constantly search for new sources of genetic materials. This review is based on reports in the landraces (primitive) varieties and crop wild relatives to explain the importance of genetic resources in plant breeding of reviewing scientific literature to pass.

New Post has been published on https://cryptomoonity.com/myanmar-food-relief-programme/
Myanmar Food Relief Programme
Myanmar Food Relief Programme
Dear Sentinel Chain Community,
“There are normally floods, but not like this year. This year is the worst ever.”
Myint Myint Than, one of the hundreds took refuge in a shelter in Bago, Myanmar.
The floods drowned large areas of farmland and completely submerged houses, causing loss of property, threatened lives and uprooted entire communities where people and animals perished, and others made homeless are crowded inside shelters at temporary relief centers, schools, halls, and monasteries.
We invited our community to join us in our effort to help people in Myanmar who were severely impacted by the torrential floods. We organised a small donation drive, the Myanmar Flood Relief Programme that ran from 13th to 15th August 2018. Through these efforts, we raised a total of 30.32 ETH, which we converted to SGD11,709 / USD8,500. We thank those who participated.
We channelled USD3,000 to Border Areas Development Association — BDA to support those impacted in Bago region. BDA is a local NGO that helps children, and families with children. With the remaining USD5,500, we purchased 11.8 tons of animal feeds from Green Field International (GFI), and with the assistance of the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (LBVD), the feeds were distributed to farmers in affected regions of Kayin, Mon and Bago. GFI waived transport charges and topped up the value of the feeds to 13 tons. Whilst Bago is about two hours south from Yangon, Kayin and Mon are six hours away.

It was very heartening that our partner Myanma Insurance (MI) organised their own fundraising in support of our efforts to help flood-affected community. Their drive culminated in a sum of 1,000,000 MMK (approx.USD 730) raised. As expressed by MI managing director, Dr. Sandar Oo, MI is “…an organization that doesn’t pay very big salary…”, hence this amount speaks for the shared values and vision of InfoCorp and MI. MI split their funds raised equally between LBVD and BDA to purchase animal feeds and children’s supplies.
On 18 September, together with MI, InfoCorp attended the donation presentation ceremony in Bago. The Bago government identified 610 most affected students from 61 basic education high schools in Bago who each received 10,000 MMK. Here are some photos of the presentation, and link to our colleague, TF Tang’s speech during the event.

Tang shared thoughts with the team after the event –
“Today, InfoCorp did a very good deed to help these affected children. The children and teachers were emotional as they and their families suffered from the impact of the flood. The Ministry of Education department allowed us to interview two children after the event.
Ko Pyie Sone, our Myanmar colleague, interviewed them to understand how the flood has affected them personally and what they are going to do with the money they received. We got to know that their houses were flooded and their family lost everything. They had no other clothes to wear and no food to eat then. Now that the flood water has subsided, they can return to their homes. With the donation money, they will buy uniform, shoes and stationeries so they can go to school to study. Ko Pyie was overwhelmed with emotions on hearing that.
Another colleague, Ko Than Swe Lay also learned that the teachers and the students had to rent a few small lorries to send them from their respective villages to come over to attend the rehearsal yesterday and the ceremony today. On hearing that, we spoke to BDA and both BDA and InfoCorp Myanmar agreed to cover their transport costs to the event. InfoCorp Myanmar will further donate around SGD 200 worth towards covering their transport cost and BDA will cover the rest.
The Bago Region Minister of Cooperation & Social Affairs, BDA and the Bago Region Ministry of Education thanked us for our support.
We have a very strong operations team in Myanmar and I am confident we can continue to do great things here!”
Thank you once again to all who supported us in helping the Myanmarese cope and recover from the torrential floods this year. Sentinel Chain works to drive long term impact to the unbanked with our community who share our values, and whilst we cannot prevent natural disasters from occurring, we will continue to do what we can to help alleviate short-term negative impact. We hope in time, more of our community will see the win-win proposition of ‘giving back’ to society together with us, into the community that we are all are invested in.
Sentinel Chain is a blockchain-based international marketplace for cross-border financial services and the world’s first platform to accept the use of livestock as collateral. Taking a unique approach to the last mile problem of financial inclusion, the Sentinel Chain model establishes livestock provenance through the creation of livestock insurance on blockchain — the registration of livestock provenance on blockchain provides the unbanked with a new opportunity: the real possibility of accepting livestock as ‘collateral’ for loans. The Daily Tulip
The Daily Tulip – News From Around The World
Sunday 6th May 2018
Good Morning Gentle Reader….  Beautiful day yesterday, spent an hour or so on the beach and then hours or so it seemed.. Shopping..! but it’s the beach again today, we don’t spend a longtime there, maybe an hour or so, but it surely is a great place to relax, if we get to the sand about 11 am until 1 pm its locals on the beach after that, it’s sunburn city as the tourist arrive to get as much of a tan as possible before they go back to whence they came.. as we live here there is no pressing need to get a tan, we already have one, for us, it’s more to relax as I said earlier and to top the tan up so to speak….  And Bella is as black as can be so she doesn’t need any more color…..
DOG DETAINED BY DYFED-POWYS WALES POLICE FOR TWO YEARS…. Dyfed-Powys Police has detained a dog in kennels for more than two years as part of an inquiry. The force is yet to make a decision on whether or not the animal is destroyed, returned to its owner or rehomed. It would not give full details as to why the animal was being held, saying it related to "an ongoing case". It has been highlighted by BBC Radio 4's You and Yours programme in an investigation into the costs of enforcing the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act. The programme found animals suspected of being pit bull terrier types were routinely detained for periods of longer than 14 weeks. A senior officer has said forces in England and Wales were spending £3m annually on kennel cost with the length of time courts take to resolve disputes over breeds blamed for the longest delays. In 2017, just over 2,000 dogs were detained by police, the vast majority under the Dangerous Dogs Act, according to 29 forces in England and Wales which responded to a Freedom of Information request. Of those, at least 334 were taken because they were suspected of being a dangerous breed, although they did not need to be out of control or a threat. No further details have been revealed about the Dyfed-Powys Police case but the programme found it was responsible for the longest detention period. Figures showed the force has paid out £105,246 in fees for kennels, transportation and veterinary costs for 53 animals since 2014. North Wales Police spent £154,307 on fees in the same period but it has not revealed the number of dogs detained.
ABBA HAVE 'NOTHING TO PROVE' WITH NEW SONGS, SAYS BENNY ANDERSSON….  The band announced last week they have recorded two new songs, which will be released later this year. "I don't feel that we have to prove anything," Benny told BBC News. "I don't feel we have to think about, 'Oh, what if it was better before?' "Maybe it was, but we can't care about that. We do it because we think it was a good thing to do." He added: "We enjoyed it very much. We'll see. I hope you'll like them." He said the songs came about while he and Bjorn Ulvaeus were in the studio working on a project where the band will tour as avatars. "So we said, 'Hmm, maybe we should try and write a couple of songs, ask the ladies if they want to come in and sing'. And they said, 'Yeah, absolutely'. So it was just, out of pure joy I'd say."
SWEDISH MEATBALL ADMISSION: THEY'RE TURKISH…. Swedish meatballs, the national dish of Sweden, have been revealed to have originated from another country - Turkey. A post on Sweden.Se, the nation's official Twitter account, on Saturday told followers: "Swedish meatballs are actually based on a recipe King Charles XII brought home from Turkey in the early 18th century. Let's stick to the facts!". Reaction to the news has included speculation over what other foods may be Turkish, and what this may mean for Swedish furniture store Ikea, known for its meatballs. Many Turkish media outlets have called the tweet a "confession" and pointed out it is not the only product the King took to Sweden. The Anadoly Agency refer to Annie Mattson, a researcher at Sweden's Uppsala University, who claims the King also brought with him coffee beans and stuffed cabbage. King Charles reigned from 1697 to 1718 and is said to have lived in Bender near Moldova, part of the old Ottoman Empire, after losing a battle with Russia.
BACKLASH OVER PLAN TO GIVE OUT 'MODESTY PONCHOS' AT PROM…. A school in Michigan has been criticised over threats to make students wear a "modesty poncho" if they fail to adhere to a strict dress code for their prom. People on social media have supported students who posted photos of the ponchos, saying the policy highlighted society's double standards towards men and women. The dress code for the dance includes requirements such as "no exposed cleavage", "no backless dresses" and "hemlines no shorter than one inch above the knee joint". Students were told they might be sent home if they flouted the dress rules but the problem came to a head when "modesty ponchos" were put on display around the Divine Child High School in Dearborn. A note attached to the poncho read: "If your dress does not meet our formal dress requirements - no problem! We've got you covered - literally. This is our modesty poncho which you'll be given at the door." As a result of complaints a letter has since been sent to parents stressing that the additional garments will not be handed out on the night.
CALGARY POLICE: BODY BEHIND WOMEN'S TOILET WALL 'ACCIDENTAL'…. Canadian police have ruled out foul play after a man's body was found behind the wall of a women's public toilet in the province of Alberta. Authorities say the man was alone when he entered the restroom in a Calgary city centre shopping mall last week. They believe he climbed behind a short wall, through the vent shaft, got stuck, and died on the evening of Friday 27 April. His motivation for crawling behind the wall remains a mystery. The body of the man, who was in his 20s, was discovered by a maintenance worker on Monday. The worker removed a wall panel in order to repair a toilet that would not flush and found the remains. "It is believed that [the victim] climbed on top of a pony [short] wall which was directly behind the toilets and removed a vent cover, which was located on top of the wall," police said in a release. "The pony wall, used to hide utilities, is approximately 7ft tall and is not connected to the ceiling and has no other access points." Based on evidence police say they believe the man climbed inside the wall through the vent. His identity was not released and police say they will not send out any further information because the death is considered accidental.

I am not going to go on and on about it and who was to blame, sometimes you just have to accept that what happened, happened and move on. However briefly. Firstly a twelve hour delay at Auckland Airport. The alpacas have been 'regarded after' at the airport but I don't actually know what that meant. They then flew to Los Angeles and from there (I don't know how lengthy they have been there but I do not suppose it was long) they then flew to Luxembourg. From Luxembourg they have been loaded onto a big livestock truck and trailer. The truck travelled towards Calais but broke down near Paris. Again what happened to the alpacas and how long they have been static for I just don't know. They had been then transported across the channel to Dover the place they have been dealt with by the authorities, whatever which means. The driver then set off for an alpaca farm near Milton Keynes to drop off some alpacas earlier than heading for Baydon. He was stopped by the Police and the whole lot was checked. Coarser fibers have diameters of 30 plus microns. But even those so-called coarse guard hairs are on the softer side when compared with the guard hairs or scales of the sheep. A micron, by the best way, is a unit of length that is one thousandth of a millimeter or one millionth of a meter. As with alpaca fleece, llama fibers has various levels of medullation or hollowness and are therefore lightweight. Relating to diameter, llama fiber ranges from 20 to 40 microns, though some say 25 to 31 microns. Llama guard hairs are lengthy, very stiff, and powerful. Sheep scales are still tougher. Sheep wool will not be as soft, fantastic, easy, lightweight, heat, or robust as alpaca and llama fiber. It scorches simply; is prone to discoloration; will shrink in water; accommodates lanolin and subsequently should be processed and often with harsh chemicals. This is chargeable for the fleece’s itchiness and irritation against human skin (there may be present processing in place to make wool fleece more hypoallergenic). We want our alpacas to be alert, inquisitive and easy to handle. Since the first and only importation of alpacas from South America in the 1980s, American breeders have been concerned with organized advertising and marketing initiatives that concentrate on fiber. Suri have a highly lustrous, silky fibre missing in crimp. Crias normally weigh approximately 15 to 19 pounds at delivery.  I don’t need this right now. Arapaho Rose Alpacas has all the pieces you want in terms of alpacas. Who sells pet alpacas? She has vivid high-quality fleece with nice character. Our selective breeding programme concentrates exclusively on the finest quality Peruvian Alpaca inventory. We firmly consider that to purchase an alpaca from a breeder is to establish a lasting relationship with that breeder as a mentor, a pal, and a colleague. They now saw the value in its fiber. Evidence suggests sheep domestication occurred somewhere between eleven,000 and 9,000 BC within the international locations of Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria. In truth, the sheep is thought to be one of the primary animals domesticated by humans. Derived from three totally different lineages of the wild mouflon, sheep were initially developed for meat, milk, and skin. It was not until 6,000 BC that Iranians discovered makes use of for wool, and eventually began trading it with Africa and Europe. That interval could be thought-about the real beginning of the sheep wool trade. Sheep arrived in England and Spain with Roman conquerors in 50 Advert. From there, the trade exploded, especially within the eleventh and 12 centuries. Christopher Columbus brought sheep to the Americas in the late fifteenth century. Sheep-rearing moved westward from the North American East Coast within the early nineteenth century. The animal arrived in Australia in the late 18th century as food provide for inmates. We then splashed out on a small marquee type thing, only 3m x 3m but emblazoned with the Patou web address and in ‘Patou green’, in fact all the things was inexperienced, it was our chosen colour. Alpaca Farm New Forest Once we were equipped with all that we entered as many reveals as we may go to. I work full time and Sue works part time so we were a bit restricted however we entered every eligible animal we had into the Bath and West Show and the SWAG Spring Show, later got here the Futurity. Our show staff was mainly anybody who was eligible; it was a brief choice course of! Our first year’s cria, Lily and Henry both took rosettes as juniors, one in each show. We have been up and operating. Since then we have now taken no less than one rosette at each show now we have been to, bar one, grrrrrrrr. Testomony to the dedication we've of sticking to our breeding programme.
