Twisted Wonderland Daemon AU (but my brain is not that big), or just Animal Companion AU - Heartslabyul Edition

The Basic Gits: Daemons are the external physical manifestation of a person's 'inner-self' that takes the form of an animal. Usually the daemon will have the opposite gender from their human. During childhood, daemon can change into any animal but when human matured, their daemon settle into a permanent form (you can’t choose the final animal form). When a human die, their daemon will turn to dust. And it’s taboo for a human to touch any daemon except their own.

It has been a long time since I watched/read The Golden Compass, so I might get some points wrong. I technically made this before the whole Yana Toboso interview that said there would be more familiar. And in the discord server I was like “My daemon au is confirm!” XD 

This is a personal choices with a help from a friend. This is harder than I thought it would be. Discussion is much welcome. I’ll be only making for the humans. So, no beastman, mermaid, ghost, fae, or any mythical creatures.

Ace Trappola

His daemon name is Penelope. In Greek, the name means ‘weaver’. It is also the name of the hero Odysseus’s faithful wife.

Penelope settled into your regular urban raccoon. Raccoons are known to be a trickster, just like Ace. The culprit who knock down your outdoor trashcan. The black mark around their eyes resemblance of a thief mask, thus they’re often associated to thievery. But this also show their intelligence to be able to steal food without anyone noticing. And with the busy and dangerous city road, a raccoon need to adapt and be resourceful with their surrounding. Thus, they can also represent craftiness, resourcefulness, problem-solving, tenacity, adaptability, and endurance.

I want a raccoon representation in this AU, so I’m giving it to Ace lol.

Deuce Spade

His daemon name is Carwen. It’s the female variant of Carwyn, a Welsh name means “blessed love”.

Carwen settles into a flame skimmer dragonfly. From many colors available, we get an orange one that will compliment Deuce’s blue aesthetic. Dragonflies may represent, growth, transformation, impermanence, ephemerality, or adolescence. Because dragonflies, both as nymphs and as adults, are such prolific hunters, dragonflies may also be connected with acuity, agility, and ferocity. In addition, dragonflies are typically born in the summer, and as we know, it’s the holiday. But can also be the time of nostalgia and connection to the youth.

Right from the get go I wanted Deuce to have something that symbolize change/metamorphosis. I can’t pick butterfly because we all know who will get that, so a dragonfly it is.

Cater Diamond

His daemon name is  Avyukth. It’s a Sanskrit girl name means "Peace of Mind; Clear as Crystal; Name of Lord Krishna." Cater gave her “Avie” as a nickname.

Avie settles into a potbellied pig. Pig symbolism is fascinating and varied depending on which side of the world you're in. In English language, there are many idioms where pigs become the subject, like "pearls before swine", "when pigs fly" dan "whole hog", thus giving pigs the symbol of gluttony or slovenliness. But, in China, pigs become the first animal to be domisticated, thus connecting it with domesticity, the home, and the success of the family. It can also symbolize status, wealth, prosperity, honesty, and virtue. Not to mention, pig is one of the animal in the twelve zodiac despite overslept and took up the rear.

For Cater, I was looking for “animal that's kinda sus” and found out that ‘Sus’ the genus of wild and domestic pigs. After that, a friend suggested those little teacup pig. I’ve never heard about it so I looked up and hoo boy it did not disappointed. With the many symbolism of the pig, we can take this as not really knowing Cater daemon’s true reason of her settled animal.

Trey Clover

His daemon name is   Frideswide. It’s a  modern form of the Old English name Friðuswiþ. It is formed of the elements frip, which means ‘peace’ and swib, which means ‘strong.’

Frideswide settles into a Newfoundland god. When you think of dogs, the first thought is usually the term “a man’s best friend”, an animal that will give you unconditional love and devotion. They are also a fierce protector and a faithful companion with their endurance, perseverance, domesticity, and playfulness in life.

I kinda joked around that I’ll be giving Trey a companion animals, and the first pick is a dog. For the breed, Newfoundland dog can be a great mama (other than Labrador Retriever), and also a symbol of hard work and genuine loyalty.

Riddle Rosehearts

His daemon name is   Aurealana. It’s a combination of two words; ‘aurea’ which means “golden” in Latin, and “alana” which  can be derived from the Irish language term "a leanbh" for "child".

Aurealana settles into a Northern mockingbird. From it's habit of "mocking", these birds represent learning, memorization, plagiarism, and music. Mockingbirds are also socially monogamous and will go out of their way to choose a partner who aggressively defends the nest and is an active and devoted parent, thus they can also represent communication, stability, defense, protection, parenthood, or commitment.

From the beginning, I know that Riddle has to have a bird daemon. It’s the usual ‘bird can fly, flying means freedom’ and Riddle being in his mother control feels like ‘a bird trapped in a birdcage’. I also headcanon Mama Rosehearts has a big cat daemon, or something like a lion or tiger, which makes it scarier compare to Riddle’s small bird.

I’m honestly starting to become a fan of your daemon au. So I got this idea. So we all know that grim and yuu is considered to be one student. What if time by time, their connection start to strengthen to the point grim becomes a part of yuu. Would that make him turn into a daemon?

For Grim and Yuu, that is an interesting idea. I think this is a similar case to Will Parry.

(Looking up the wiki because I haven't read the rest of the book) So, Will Parry is from Earth, so he doesn't have a daemon, but when he visit The Land Of The Dead, his soul need to be left behind, thus manifesting into his daemon, Kirjava.

I can actually think of two scenarios for Grim:

1) Yeah, Grim would be Yuu's daemon. When they crossed into Twisted-Wonderland, their soul manifested into Grim. Grim might be able to change forms in this scenario like any other daemon before settling into a cat. Though this might change with the whole black rock thing that I haven't really think how.

or

2) Grim is just like in canon; an ordinary mythical creature in Twisted-Wonderland who befriended an isekai-ed kid.

This is more of a case if we're talking about, Yuuken Enma, Yuuka Hirasaka, Kuroki Yuuya, or any other Yuu OCs. With their stronger personality than game!Yuu self-insert nature, I think their soul might manifest into a daemon of their own (like I can see Yuuken having a wolf daemon).

But I think Grim can be a huge role in settling Yuu's daemon depending on their relationship. Most of the time, I think Yuu's daemon will have something to do with a protective/parental/older sibling nature from their close relationship with Grim, as seen in Ignihyde Episode.

So quick question about the daemon au.

if the person overbloted what would happen to the daemon?

Hmm... That's a thought.

Since a daemon is basically the manifestation of someone's soul, if that person overblot, then their daemon will go overblot as well. Their body might be covered with ink as well or maybe they started to get dusty. I feel like they will have sick costumes as well similar to their humans. Like, imagine Riddle's tiny mockingbird daemon wearing this wicked cape and crown.

As we know, when someone died in His Dark Material, their daemon will turn to dust. When someone gets fully overblot, as in they turned into a blot monster like the one in the Dwarves Mine, I feel like the last bits of their soul are gone as well. Thus, their daemon just vanishes, their connection is cut, and they return to dust.

After that, the phantom blot will just roam around the world without a purpose and missing something. Or they might linger in the last place their daemon disappeared.

Ok so I saw how you said that each yuu will have an different daemon if their own and it gives me an idea of what daemons theirs be.

Yuuken- wolf (since you said it yourself that his will be a wolf which is fitful because wolves symbolize loyalty and friendships)

Yuuka- lioness ( pretty self explanatory since we know that in the wild, lionesses are often the ones that hunt. Plus they symbolize female power)

Yuuya- rabbit( so I decided to look up animals that represent shyness and the first thing they come up is rabbit so I decided to use it as his daemon)

I guess you read my mind why I might pick a wolf daemon for Yuuken. It's his protective/big brother nature as we have seen in the manga toward both his junior and Grim.

As far as I know for Yuuya (because I haven't read the light novel fully), a rabbit daemon does sound fitting for him. He does has that soft nature in him and is pretty timid.

Yuuka meanwhile, as much I really like the idea, I don't think a lioness might do, mostly because of the gender (daemon's gender are the opposite if the owner). We can still highlight Yuuka's hardworking nature with maybe a beaver, a hummingbird, or a bee.

ok so I saw in your daemon au that riddle’s mother has a more bigger daemon. Now it’s been awhile since I watch the golden compass, but their is this one scene where Laura( I think that’s her name?) was facing of with the main villain. The woman then used her daemon to held Laura’s daemon hostage so that why she can complied. Whenever I think about that scene I think about how mrs.roseheart used her daemon to hold riddle’s daemon hostage because of how riddle is too ‘Rebellious’.

Yes, I'm sure Mama Rosehearts would absolutely do that. I can imagine Riddle, who was usually a good kid, just a simple growl of her daemon or just a step closer is enough.

The first time Mama Rosehearts' daemon ever touch Riddle's was after she found out he snuck out to play with Trey and Che'nya. She was furious. Riddle's daemon shifted into many animals trying to get away from his mother's bigger daemon because it hurts. Riddle was scared to disappoint his mother before, yes, but he was absolutely terrified at that moment.

(On another note, I love Mrs. Coulter so much, even just from my vivid memories of the movie. I was high attention whenever she was on the scene. You know she's the antagonist, but she still loves and saves Lyra from getting cut away from her daemon. She left an impact on me.)

Back at again for ideas for your daemon AU.

so i have ideas on what the staff daemon would be along with their names.

Crewel- a Dalmatian(unsurprisingly). I feel like her name will be lady cuz idk it sounds elegant like crewel.

Mozus- He will still have an black cat but it will be a female and instead of being name lucius, she will be name lucia.

Vargas- i feel like his daemon will be a bear since it fits him very well. her name will be bernadette which means " Strong as a bear".

Sam- His will be a boa because boas are a huge part of the voodoo religion. Her name will be layfette.

These are so neat!

I haven't really thought about the staff or minor character (I had an idea of giving Neige a rabbit but it's still on the drafting board), but I can see these are their daemon. Other than Trein and his cat daemon are a given, so no changing that.

I think I'm only iffy with Crewel. It's more of a personal taste but I'm avoiding the more 'obvious' animals. That's why I'm not giving Riddle a hedgehog or, in the future, Vil getting a horse instead of your usual peacock.

I might give the peacock to Crewel, which he would be very disappointed at first because he really wants a dog daemon, but alas. He still has a fondness for dogs and maybe would give the kids with dog daemons (like Trey) special treatments.

That's a good question.

For now, I'm still giving the Shroud brothers daemon, at least until they were explicitly stated that they aren't human.

Idia has a turtle (symbol of wisdom, immortality, and isolation), while Ortho has a robo-butterfly (metamorphosis buddies with Deuce). Technically Idia created a daemon for Robo-Ortho and then when he reached his teen year, he made something like those quizzes "What daemon would you have?" so he had an easier way to program her. So, you can say Ortho is the only one who can choose what animal his daemon can settle in so far.

Whumptober 2023: Day 13, Infection (Trigun: Twin Swap AU, Zazie POV)

(in an ideal world I woulda finished this today but hhhhsdgjkfsd nope)

There is something…strange, piercing the night-moon-dark air. We lift our head, looking through the eyes of a drone to the dark sky-sands above. Normally, those sands would glint with the eyes of Monarchs passed before us, and if it were Brood Season, the expanse would be alight with the drifting eggs of yet-to-be-hatched grubs. Yet this Moon-pass...eggs much bigger than we’ve ever seen in all our many cycles are falling down down down-

Bright. Blinding. Hot.

Whumptober 2023: Day 9, "You're a Liar" (Trigun: Stampede)

There’s an illness rolling through the orphanage- Toma-pox, they call it. Nicholas prowls the halls, gathering up the sick kids one by one. He needs to make sure all the kids are piled into one area so they can be taken care of. And q. Cuar. Ant-eened. He thinks that's how you say it.

Miss Melanie was really tired and taking a break, so Nicholas can help with this. Sisters Clara and Beth were busy making stew for everyone. He’d already been looking for Livio, what's a couple more kids?

They tell him to be careful or he might catch it too. He just huffs and rolls his eyes. He’s too strong to get sick like everyone else.

Whumptober 2023: Day 7, "Can you hear me?" (One Piece)

They’d stopped on an island, something-something island with a name Zoro didn’t bother to remember. They’d stopped there to restock on some supplies, since according to their Cook and Doctor, they were getting pretty low. 

Which is all well and good; Luffy in particular is always excited for someplace new to explore; their Captain needed somewhere to work off his pent up energy. Normally Zoro would go with him, but he’d somehow gotten roped into pack-mule duty for the crap Cook, while Nami helped Chopper carry his purchased supplies. He's not sure why the roles can't be switched. Random fruits and vegetables weren’t that much heavier than bandages in his opinion really…

He got angrier the more he thought about it, but not for the usual reasons.

My Mind, My Body, My Soul, Chapter 5: Father's Lament (Genshin Impact, Daemon AU)

Today was supposed to be a good day. It was supposed to be bright, filled with joy and happy memories to be made. 

In a happier world, a safer world, maybe the Ragnvindr family would have had a wonderful party, full of smiles and cake and food and love and safety and warmth. Perhaps some drinking, since Diluc would then have been of age, and the only tragedy would be the young master of Mondstadt’s wine industry discovering how much he dislikes alcohol.

A small semi-formal dance was to be had, followed by a sweet musical number performed by the youngest Gunhildr sister. Some embarrassment, but genuine awe and excitement as that would have been the first gift given on the celebration of Diluc’s birth.

Whumptober 2023: Day 30, Borrowed clothing, bridal carry (Twisted Wonderland)

“There! The mirror!” Divus says, relief plain in his voice. Mozus Trein looks up from the mirror in his grip, towards the Dark Mirror all their students had leapt through hours before, its surface rippling with voices coming from as if underwater. 

“OH thank goodness! We won't be sued after all-” Crowley sighs, stepping forward only to be pulled back by one of Divus’s hands on his feathered shoulder.

Whumptober 2023: Day 23, Shadows, "Who's there?" (Honkai Star Rail)

(tip toeing around spoilers so I'm not sharing the FIRST first lines haha)

They both look over to their friend to catch him staring back at them, golden eyes wide, his fingers near his mouth. He swallows on reflex, and they can tell it's more than just saliva going down his throat.

Welt's face goes pale, and he shoves the journal to the side, which March quietly takes. Welt rushes to Orion's side, cane clicking, free hand fluttering nervously about the box. “Please tell me you did not just take one of those medicine pellets.”

Orion blinks, then looks down at the box. One small object, one pill is clearly missing.

”I uh. Can tell you I did not...not take one....“ the young trailblazer says sheepishly. Welt sucks in a breath through his teeth.
