Trying to get more into old movies because of this blog (I only know about half of these people and feel like a poser) do you have good recommendations on where to start or is it just a situation where you watch stuff and find what you like as you go?

you are not a poser <3 i myself am just here for the hotties.

here is my quick and dirty list of fun films to start with if you're new to old movies. and of course if you like one of these, do try to find more stuff as you go! there's no bad way to try out old movies.

(this list is not official and is SUPER quick. i'm tagging for content warnings where I can, but if I forgot something let me know.)

"I want to watch something SILLY!"

The Court Jester (Danny Kaye, Angela Lansbury, Glynis Johns, Basil Rathbone)—everyone in this movie is hot. everyone is in fancy medieval dress, which makes them hotter. everyone here is very silly. You can stream this on Hoopla, last time i checked, so you might be able to stream it through your library!

Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang (Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries, Gert Frobe)—some people hate this movie and to them I say What Is Wrong With You. dick van dyke is a hot absent minded inventor who lives in a windmill with his two adorable children, his gorgeous sheepdog, and a grandfather who is categorically useless. it feels like the two films mary poppins (1964) and willy wonka (1971) had a baby and that baby was born on roller skates singing an old broadway showtune. this one has been showing up in some odd places lately—I think you can catch it on Tubi or Hoopla? It's definitely around.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Jane Powell, Julie Newmar, Howard Keel, Russ Tamblyn)—my problematic fave. everytime i watch this i change my mind whether it's a sexist pile of garbage or a feminist paean, and fellas, today we're on the feminist paean bandwagon!! jane powell's millie is truly the star of the movie, she is the hero she drives the plot the narrative is on her side, and besides all that there are seven very hot men dancing next to her and six beautiful ladies making me bisexual. (on Tubi last I checked.)

The Duke Is Tops (Lena Horne, Laurence Criner)—I get a huge kick out of watching Laurence Criner and Ralph Cooper swindle everybody while also trying to put on a show; there's just something silly and sincere here, plus you get a ~musical extravaganza~ at the end when all is right as rain again. Free on YouTube I think?

Witness for the Prosecution (Marlene Dietrich, Tyrone Power, Elsa Lanchester)—I love a campy twisty turny mystery, don't you? :) I'm not going to talk about this one much because it's better to go in blind, but if you like Agatha Christie stories you'll probably like this.

To Be Or Not To Be (Carole Lombard, Jack Benny)—always relevant, always makes me laugh, also makes me cry. this takes place in poland during wwii so big tw for nazi imagery and mentions. (don't worry. this movie fucking hates nazis.)

Seven Samurai (Toshiro Mifune)—this one is Great Cinema™™™™™™™™™™™ for a goddamned reason

"I want to watch some stuff with the scrungles in it!"

Mr. Washington Goes to Town (Mantan Moreland)—I've been checking out more of Mantan Moreland's stuff because every time I see him in something I think he's delightful, and I really enjoyed this silly-spooky comedy. Does this story have a brain cell? No. Are the special effects and goofy slapstick fun? Yes. This is a fun example of an all-Black cast in a film that was made for Black audiences, and is a striking counterpoint to the stereotypical representation Black actors were given in white-targeted films, showing the enormous amount of talent and artistry the racist studios missed out on by excluding these actors. This is not A Great Film™ but it's still A Fun Time,™ with a goofy Laurel and Hardy type vibe. (It's free on Youtube.)

The Red Shoes (Robert Helpmann, Leonide Massine, Marius Goring)—hey kid, you wanna watch something fucked up? This movie is so fucked up. It's about ballet, it's about art, it's about technicolor, it's about dance and toxic relationships and making theatre and nightmares and ambition and death. A lot of these recs tend on the silly side (because I tend on the silly side) but this one is actually Serious Film and will definitely help you chat up Martin Scorsese should you ever meet him. Big content warning if you can't handle dark themes right now—this movie's pretty dark, not in the gore way but in the Haunting Creepy Image way. (it's also free on Tubi and Kanopy most of the time.)

The Invisible Man (Claude Rains)—my favorite of the vintage horror flicks and a great introduction to Most Dunked On Hot Vintage Man of All Time, Claude Rains. (it helps that you barely ever see him!) Very very silly but the special effects are just plain fun. (I think this is on Internet Archive in full?)

"Can I just get more hot people please?"

Flower Drum Song (James Shigeta, Nancy Kwan, Miyoshi Umeki, Jack Soo)—there are so many unbelievably hot people in this movie which is somehow very good (thanks to its cast) and also incredibly, horrifically bad (thanks to its white team of writers, directors, and producers). on the one hand, it's a mostly Asian cast in a big budget, beautifully designed MGM style musical! there's dream sequences, lots of fun dancing, crooning Rogers & Hammerstein cabaret moments, and just charm galore. it is also freighted with so. many orientalist assumptions and stereotypes, absolutely ridiculous shit that the writers ABSOLUTELY should have known better about in the 60s and nonetheless carried into this. this is a hard one to recommend because I loved this cast, and I loved seeing them in a context beyond the usual stereotypical bit parts so many of them frequently were limited to—yet the movie itself perpetuates so many stereotypes on its own it can be a hard one to watch, and I totally understand if it does not work for most people. tl;dr watch for Shigeta, Kwan, Umeki, and the others, but content warnings galore for one (really bad) case of yellowface casting, orientalist tropes, extremely stereotypical character types, etc. (On Tubi/Kanopy last I checked.)

Charade (Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, James Coburn)—this movie feels like a Hitchcock movie except I had a ton of fun watching it, which I can't always say for a Hitch film. (I told you my taste was bad.) This one is free on YouTube and thank god because Audrey wears a lot of Givenchy, Cary Grant wears spectacles and keeps almost dying, it's very exciting and thrilling and funny and sexy. I don't think there are any content warnings but it's been a minute since I watched it. (I should go watch it right now.)

The Big Sleep (Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall)—they're so hot askjdljhjghladkghjksahkhgslkahgshskjhgsalhgsahgjh. i like this one a lot :)

Welcome to my crossover of Neopets and Transformers, known as NeoPrime.

I am GinnyIcyiDragon and this is my 4th (ish) blog. It's mainly Transformers with a crossover of Neopets... lol

This crossover started around 2007 or 2008 due to I enjoyed Neopets and Transformers series. It was started with Transformers Animated and Transformers Bayverse film yet it was slowly developing in Prime and G1. I know, it sounds really crazy and why would I put creatures like Neopets in Transformers? Well, in my verse, Neopets aren't weak nor just cute pets. The Neopets are aliens with powers, can talk, different sizes than the official ones, having connections to Transformers and Earth while being partnered up with the Transformers. There are both sides, good and bad. Plus partnering up with Transformers will be... interesting. 😆 I'd already done it and the crossover grew even more after TF ONE. How the plot go will be... odd yet interesting. The name NeoPrime is named by one my online sisters and she'd helped me with the ideas for it. Ninjago Next Gen Ocs... Cause I'm Bored

This is my account I can do what I want! Cole doesn't have children cause I headcanon him as Ace 🤗. I gotta wip with these children that I have no idea if I'll finish but IDK let's do this cause why not.

The context for the wip: Zane is Sensei, Lloyd is missing, Pixal is constantly looking for Lloyd, and the others is in retirement except for Cole who is in Shintro being Vania's bodyguard.

Gwendolyn, Zero, and Haven or the triples. Zane and Pixal's kids, if you couldn't tell.

Gwendolyn: Gwendolyn is often touted as the carbon copy of her mother given her looks, which are do to the fact that Pixal and Zane used old blueprints of Pixal's as a base for her. Granted she act's like her father. Cold as ice but incredibly kind! She is the next master of ice although the elemental is spilt between herself and her father do to an accident when trying to pass the power down. Preferring to use handbtonhand combat, one of Zane's old bows and specially made arrows Haven's made, Gwendolyn is fine with the small amount of elemental power she had, don't want any more of it, and doesn't want to talk about the accident. She is a constant worrier, worrying about anyone and everyone, especially her parents.

Zero: Or Zane Jr. Same deal as Gwendolyn but it's Zane this time. Although Zero tired of being compared to his father so much so that he gave himself the name Zero and everyone just went along with it. He is easily agitated, often getting in arguments with anyone that isn't his parents or actual siblings. Zero does have a soft interior though, enjoy everything that isn't people and find comfort in animals. One could call him the next Samurai x or Samurai Z if you will, given the fact that he is a big momma's boy and has an extreme amount of love and respect for both his parents both Pixal in particular. He's a boy that misses his mom like a lot!

Haven: One is surprised when they find out that Haven is Pixal and Zane's child. They are excitable over the smallest things, funny, always happy, and looking on the bright side of things. Get Haven next to her parents though, she looks like a perfect combo of the two of them minus the purple hair, which she did to herself. Haven is the resident inventor for the next-gen kids, often acting as a guide and fix-it man for the others. Cole has offered to give Haven the element power of Earth, but Zane is, honestly, too scared to try. Given the fact that Gwendolyn didn't take to his elemental power that will, and he feels he's to blame. Haven would like to be the new master of the earth, but respects her father's wishes and doesn't push the issue... that often.

(We are going to overlook the fact that Nya in Canon is the sea... haha... next-gen kids!!!)

Tyrone and Opal or the twins. Jay and Nya's kids!

Tyrone: Dude, he's Jay but without the anxiety issues and a huge thing for getting into trouble. He is the new master of lightning and he's got good control of his powers, minus the hurting himself, but that's only if he uses his powers a lot. He's the one Zero has gotten into a few fistfights with, given his pranking ways that go too far at times. He's a video game nerd like his pops and is the one who sends the kids memes at 3 a.m. because he is a natural night owl. He enjoys it when his parents visit and constantly goes to his grandparent's junkyard to get Haven spare parts for random shit.

Opal: She doesn't wanna be here. Opal is incredibly shy, keeps to herself most of the time, does not want to bother anyone, and rarely ever speaks. Though she is the new master of water and local music enthusiast. Opal literally just wants to go back home. She doesn't wanna be a ninja and, slightly, resents both Jay and Nya for making her go to the monastery with her brother, so they could train under Zane's tutelage. Dispute not wanting to be a ninja, Opal is not one to back down and just give up, so get gives her a great talent for combat and use of her power.

Drew. Kai and Skylor's kid.

Drew is for the most part mellow and relaxed for being the new master of fire. Disliking the early training schedule, but enjoying being a ninja because it's fun to be powerful. Everything is about good vibes, and annoying her father ever so slightly with bad jokes and pranks when he comes to visit. Drew is all about fun and playing with fire, maybe committing arson.

Wren, Lloyd's child.

The youngest of the next-gen kids, they can't remember when they arrived at the monastery nor do they know who their parents are. All they know is that they have the power of energy and they kinda look like this savior dude name Lloyd Garmadon. Wren is the person that is into true crime but with their own lives, trying to figure out where they came from and being a ninja most of the time. The other ninja, Pixal, and even the triples know that Lloyd is Wren's father, but don't have the guts to tell them given the fact that he's been missing for such a long time. They call Zane dad from time to time because he basically raised them, and literally just wants to know who the hell their parents are and why they were left with Zane in the first place.

Wax Works - WIP Intro

–> GENRE: YA fantasy

–> POV: first person

–> MAJOR THEMES: destiny, found family, good vs. evil

–> STATUS: About to start the first draft

–> SUMMARY: After the fates foresaw a rising threat to Olympus, the gods concocted a plan: Reincarnate some of their greatest heroes to form an elite squad to protect their legacy. Things didn’t go entirely as planned as Daedalus absolutely refused to be separated from his son again and yanked Icarus along with him to the next life, giving the group an unintended fifth member. Now, the newly reincarnated Icarus is struggling to prove that he’s not the weak link of the group as he does his best to help his friends defend the world in the name of Olympus.

Our Protagonist

Toby Mckinnley/Icarus - The epitome of the Impulsive Teenage Boy. Toby grew up terrorizing his older sisters and getting himself hurt with his recklessness. When he finds out about the gods’ plans for their group, he is incredibly eager for the opportunity to help save the world. The fact that no one seems to have much faith in him only makes him more eager to prove that he has what it takes to be a hero.

The Rest of the Gang

Oscar Lamar/Odysseus - The king. Oscar may technically be classified as a genius, but he has absolutely no sense of direction. His plans to get into a prestigious university were completely thrown off when the gods thrust him in charge of figuring out how they were supposed to save the world, but as someone who is basically incapable of turning down a challenge, Oscar has fully embraced his role as leader.

Tyrone “Tye” Weaver/Daedalus - The inventor. Tye grew up in a very poor family in a rough neighborhood, but that didn’t stop his passion for building things. From a young age, he was constantly drawing up elaborate mazes and pulling junked electronics out of trash cans to either fix up or rebuild into something else entirely. Tye doesn’t fully understand how he’s meant to help save the world, but he’s willing to try, especially if it means protecting his family. He would also be much happier if Toby would stop making him constantly worry that he’s going to get himself killed. What the Hades Toby?????

Ian Hartnell/Orpheus - The bard. As a musical prodigy from a rich family, Ian was playing simple tunes on the piano before he could walk, and he was filling concert halls with people flocking to hear his original compositions by the time he was ten. That would have been great, of course, if Ian’s heart was actually in classical music, but his parents never gave him much of a choice in the matter. Though he is a bit wary of the gods’ plans at first, Ian is more than willing to join the team once he realizes that this means he is finally getting the chance to play the punk rock anthems of his dreams.

Carlos Beldad/Achilles - The warrior. All Carlos really wants to do is play football and spend some time with his boyfriend, but if the world needs him to be a fearless warrior, he’s more than willing to do whatever it takes to help keep the world safe. Assuming, of course, all this hero business doesn’t make him miss the big game. He still intends on wiggling his way into the NFL once the world is saved, after all.

Zoey Watts - A demigod daughter of Zeus. Her father put her up to the task of keeping tabs on the rest of our gang of heroes and reporting back to Olympus. Zoey doesn’t actually want to have to keep putting herself in danger like this, but she's holding onto the hope that this will finally be enough to make her father proud of her.

Alright but the thing about the wikpiedia list lining up with Ireland's colonisation is just not true. The first wave of invasions from England started with the Normans in the late 12th century. It didn't take long before the de facto authority of the English crown diminished to a small area around Dublin (The Pale), with most of the invading English noblemen outside the Pale assimilating into Irish culture and practices. It wasn't until the mid 16th century that English crown made a concerted effort to extend it's actual authority, triggering a series of wars and rebellions (the largest of these being Tyrone's Rebellion or the 9 years war starting in 1593). This period also the Plantations; large scale setter-colonisation, mainly in Ulster or what is now Northern Ireland, where land was confiscated from the native Irish and given to English and Scottish settlers in a process similar to what was happening in North America at the time (many men who were responsible for Irish colonisation also played a role in the Americas).

But while starting in the 16th century, this process intensified significantly during the 17th century. The 17th century also saw the introduction of many repressive anti-Catholic laws, which sparked many rebellions which were met with incredibly brutal repression (the worst of these being Cromwell's campaigns of the 1650s-between the direct killings and deportations and the subsequent famines and plagues anywhere between 15-50% of Ireland's population at the time was lost). I also want to note that Robert Boyle and Hans Sloane (the men listed as Irish inventors in the 17th century) were both the descendants of English and Scottish plantation settlers. Basically during this "gap" of inventions Ireland went from largely independent to the serious repression only beginning, the end of this gap is actually when English and Scottish brutality intensified dramatically. So essentially, the 300 year gap in invention has less than nothing to do with British colonialism (although the fact that the first inventions after this gap weren't even made by indigenous Irish people certainly does)

Like it's good that people are aware of the many atrocities England committed during their occupation of Ireland it's important that people know the specifics of what happened rather than just a broad airy fairy "those brits are pretty bad huh". I wish people would take the time to actually learn Irish history rather than spouting whatever bullshit sounds good

Neste dia, em 1998, José Saramago é o primeiro autor de língua portuguesa a ganhar o Prêmio Nobel de Literatura. Também neste dia, em 1929 nasceu o grande músico, compositor e violonista brasileiro Paulinho Nogueira e em 1897 o grande cineasta, diretor, e roteirista georgiano – americano Rouben Mamoulian.

Paulo Artur Mendes Pupo Nogueira, conhecido por Paulinho Nogueira nasceu em Campinas em 08 de outubro de 1927 e faleceu em São Paulo em 02 de agosto de 2003.Foi um músico, compositor, cantor, violonista e professor brasileiro. Exímio violonista, foi também um grande compositor, tanto de músicas instrumentais (famosas inclusive fora do Brasil, como as suas Bachianinhas), quanto de músicas com letra. Foi inventor da craviola, e o primeiro mestre de Toquinho. Teve músicas gravadas por grandes nomes. Desde criança se mostrou grande apreciador das músicas de Johann Sebastian Bach, tendo-o como influência para a composição de uma de suas músicas mais famosas, a Bachianinha.

Rouben Mamoulian, em armênio Ռուբեն Մամուլյան, nasceu na Geórgia em 08 de outubro de 1897 e faleceu em Hollywood e 04 de dezembro de 1987. Foi um diretor de cinema armeno-americano. Filho de um banqueiro e de uma atriz armênia, ele foi para os Estados UNidos no final dos anos 20 para dirigir óperas e operetas, mas com o crescimento da indústria cinematográfica ele decidiu tentar a sorte em Hollywood. Em 1929 ele dirigiu uma das primeiras produções faladas do cinema mundial: "Applause" (Aplausos)", e em seguida fez "City Streets" (Ruas da Cidade), estrelado por Gary Cooper e Sylvia Sidney. Em 1932 realiza seu filme de maior sucesso, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (O Médico e o Monstro), considerado pelos críticos de cinema como uma das melhores adaptações cinematográficas do conto de Robert Louis Stevenson. O filme deu o Oscar de melhor ator para Frederich March. 

José de Sousa Saramago nasceu em Azinhaga, Golegã em 16 de novembro de 1922 e faleceu em Tías, Lanzarote em 18 de junho de 2010. Foi umescritor português. Galardoado com oNobel de Literatura em 08 de outubro de 1998. Também ganhou vários outros prêmios. Saramago foi considerado o responsável pelo efetivo reconhecimento internacional da prosa em língua portuguesa.
