need to shell out for a new laptop before the end of the year - for a lot of reasons but mainly bc support ending for win8.1 makes fixing the current beast rather pointless :/ (and. admittedly. there is a lot to fix. she's old and she has suffered.)
but my current beastie is from the last gen of laptops with a disc drive and the thought of using an external/usb disc drive is enough to make me cry tears of blood
#really though it is time to upgrade#and i hate to say it because she /runs/ fine it's all hardware issues w parts that can absolutely be replaced#but if i can't use it to run the programs i need then shelling out the money for those parts would ultimately be a waste#but also the fact that this machine that runs fine is no longer worth fixing bc some google-based bullshit just won't support win8.1 anymor#is ALSO a fucking waste & a pile of planned obsolescence bullshit! and i hate it!#but uh. even though she runs fine and she totally does. she does need. uh.#new keyboard (only 1/3 of keys work; currently use usb keyboard)#new trackpad ribbon cable (trackpad does not currently work; using external usb mouse)#new power button and connecting ribbon cable (turning it on involves opening it up and causing an intentional short-circuit every time.)#(a problem largely solved by simply never turning her completely off- except she also needs)#a new battery (current battery does not charge at all; machine needs to be constantly plugged in or it shuts down immediately)#...ok i might be the 'this is fine' dog about this#but i am still upset! that i will no longer have a disc drive inside my damn laptop.#that's the disc drive's natural habitat; that's where it should be; it's weird and offputting to have it connected via usb!#ack. why do tech companies fuck everything up.#and that's without getting into the way new devices offer less harddrive space so people will use the fucking cloud or whatever???#yeah sorry no i'm not using your goddamn data mining corporate off-site storage i want to keep my shit on my own goddamn machine#go to actual hell if you're trying to sell me a pc with less than at least 500GB of storage i swear to fuck#...in essence you could say the whole process is leaving me rather grumpy

I feel like the person who decided we needed to switch from USB-micro to USB-C should be killed. Causing so much unnecessary cable waste and frustration is deserving of death. These are just my thoughts and feelings, which happen to be correct.

I'm going to sound really old and really angry here for a moment.
I just bought a new smartphone. Second smartphone of my life. The first one has served me well for the past decade. The only reason I am buying a new one is because the battery runs out too fast by now, like, when I intensely read fics on it, it will be empty in four hours.
First point that makes me angry: The fact that I have to buy a whole new device just because the battery is giving in. This is an electronic device! You should be able to open it up, take out the faulty battery and put in a new one!!
Don't tell me they changed battery shape or whatever that much in the past ten years. Normal-ass batteries are still the same as they were when I was a toddler 30 years ago, why the fuck are phone batteries special little snowflakes that changed oh-so-much that they are not available anymore for this model. That's unreal, that's bullshit.
So I bought this new phone. And I had to buy a motherfucking adapter so I can plug it into a damn socket to charge it. Separately. Because the fucking phone only comes with a ~cable~. What for? What am I supposed to do with just a cable? When I buy an electronic device that runs on an internal battery, you ought to provide me with the means to charge that shit up and charging happens in a damn socket. Don't make me go and buy a separate adapter to do this, what the actual hell.
And oh look, number two and number three are about adapters!
I CAN'T PLUG THIS PHONE INTO MY COMPUTER/LAPTOP??? My old one needed an adapter for charging too, but at least the damn cable fit into a normal USB port so I could... put music on it and get my pictures from my phone onto my laptop? What in the seven hells even is that damn plug? It is the same shape on all ends what am I supposed to do with this double-sided dildo, let two phones have sex? This is unhinged levels of uselessness.
Do I now have to buy a second, different adapter so I can put media onto the phone and get media off the phone? Are you for real? Are you truly making these things in the most ridiculously useless forms now to force your customers to buy max number of additional other shit?
Now, fourth point of anger: WHERE IS THE HOLE FOR MY HEADPHONES ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME? This only has one hole. Am I... What... What do I even do with that, like, I am genuinely at a loss about this part. Do headphones exist with plugs that... that fit into the charging port on the phone...? Do I have to buy new headphones now?
All of this makes me so tired and so mad and I haven't even turned the fucking phone on yet.
This shit should just straight-up be illegal.
Devices that can play music/sound used to all have normed holes for your headphones. Removing that hole from a device that is, by now, primed to play videos, music and for you to have phone calls on should actually not be allowed.
Making devices that require charging, when the act of charging is and always has been the act of plugging said device into a damn socket, without providing you with the means to plug the device into a damn socket, should not be allowed! You should not need to buy a separate piece of equipment for that!
And I don't even have words for why they would change the shape of the cable in a way that makes it hostile toward computers and laptops. Like. What even is that why is that what do I do with that. This used to be USB, for the very normal obvious act of transferring data, now it's just... useless.
(EDIT: Okay I have found a never-used-before hole in my laptop that fits. But still. Good fucking gods. Why invent a new shape at all. USB has been working very well for a very long time. Why make things more complicated.)
I hate it here. I absolutely hate it here. Capitalism leading to this throwaway consumerism where things need to be replaced as a whole when one individual part breaks and where you have go go "and also I need these three separate, different items that I have to buy additionally just to use the first device". This is hell. We live in hell and I hate it here.

This is mostly off-topic for the blog, but maybe someone else can learn from my mistakes.
You know how I mentioned a few times over the past couple of weeks that I didn't have access to the spreadsheet I use to maintain the blog, because my PC had died? Well here's what happened.
I had a long USB cable plugged into the front of my PC tower because I was charging my phone. At some point, I had removed the phone but left the USB cable plugged in.
The loose end of the USB cable fell off my desk, where it hit the metal heating/cooling vent cover on the wall. Electricity surged and arced from the cable to the vent, seeking ground through the ductwork and killing the computer at the same time. I have enough hardware knowledge to know how to change a CMOS battery and shove a RAM stick into a desktop PC, but not enough to know if the surge killed the power supply, the motherboard, something else, or all of it.
The good news is, I finally have a new PC with better stats, and my solid-state drive was undamaged, so I didn't lose any data.
So that's my PSA, I guess! Don't leave any loose cables plugged into your devices, especially near a vent!
#the guy at the shop asked what game i'm going to play first on my new pc#i just said 'uhhh. control' because i didn't want to give the real answer: tumblr and photoshop#leaving the cable plugged in was pretty thoughtless but what can i say. i'm pretty thoughtless#psa

Almost Good: USB-C
As of this year, USB-C is mandatory in the EU. All phones must charge via USB-C. This is good, right?
Well, almost. It's a step in the right direction, but it won't solve everything.
All that is meant by USB-C is the shape of the plug and the port. The USB type C port can be used for USB 2.0, USB 3.1, different fast-charging technologies like QC, PD, and other protocols like HDMI, DisplayPort, and thunderbolt. USB-C ports can be used with all kinds of devices, cables, adapters, protocols, and drivers. Some use only a subset of the pins, or use the same USB-C port with a different pinout. Now in theory, the EU directive is also supposed to standardise chargers and fast charging technologies, forcing sellers of phones to clearly label what kind of charger a phone needs.
In practice, you may already have chargers and cables that are incompatible with each other, or get downgraded to 5W trickle-charging and USB 2.0 data transfer speeds.
In practice, you may have a USB-C power bank and a smart phone, and you might accidentally charge your power bank from your phone, instead of the other way round. I saw it happen, albeit not to a programmer. Relatives of mine had cheap USB cables melt, and they were confused about USB-C to HDMI adapters. Are those passive adapters, or active components? Are USB-C to USB-A host adapters passive or active? Are USB charging cables active? Why do all kinds of things stop working when you use a USB-C extension cable?
I know the answers, but normal people don't. It's not the fault of the EU that people are confused about USB, or that the USB-C port is used for things that aren't USB, that smartphones don't have drivers for eGPUs, or that cheap USB cables you bought at the dollar store aren't made to provide 240W of power to gaming laptops.
In practice, USB-C is almost good.

How to know if a USB cable is hiding malicious hacker hardware
Are your USB cables sending your data to hackers?

We expect USB-C cables to perform a specific task: transferring either data or files between devices. We give little more thought to the matter, but malicious USB-C cables can do much more than what we expect.
These cables hide malicious hardware that can intercept data, eavesdrop on phone calls and messages, or, in the worst cases, take complete control of your PC or cellphone. The first of these appeared in 2008, but back then they were very rare and expensive — which meant the average user was largely safeguarded.
Since then, their availability has increased 100-fold and now with both specialist spy retailers selling them as “spy cables” as well as unscrupulous sellers passing them off as legitimate products, it’s all too easy to buy one by accident and get hacked. So, how do you know if your USB-C cable is malicious?
Further reading: We tested 43 old USB-C to USB-A cables. 1 was great. 10 were dangerous
Identifying malicious USB-C cables
Identifying malicious USB-C cables is no easy task since they are designed to look just like regular cables. Scanning techniques have been largely thought of as the best way to sort the wheat from the chaff, which is what industrial scanning company, Lumafield of the Lumafield Neptune industrial scanner fame, recently set out to show.
The company employed both 2D and 3D scanning techniques on the O.MG USB-C cable — a well-known hacked cable built for covert field-use and research. It hides an embedded Wi-Fi server and a keylogger in its USB connector. PCWorld Executive Editor Gordon Ung covered it back in 2021, and it sounds scary as hell.
What Lumafield discovered is interesting to say the least. A 2D X-ray image could identify the cable’s antenna and microcontroller, but only the 3D CT scan could reveal another band of wires connected to a die stacked on top of the cable’s microcontroller. You can explore a 3D model of the scan yourself on Lumafield’s website.

It confirms the worst — that you can only unequivocally confirm that a USB-C cable harbors malicious hardware with a 3D CT scanner, which unless you’re a medical radiographer or 3D industrial scientist is going to be impossible for you to do. That being so, here are some tips to avoid and identify suspicious USB-C cables without high-tech gear:
Buy from a reputable seller: If you don’t know and trust the brand, simply don’t buy. Manufacturers like Anker, Apple, Belkin, and Ugreen have rigorous quality-control processes that prevent malicious hardware parts from making it into cables. Of course, the other reason is simply that you’ll get a better product — 3D scans have similarly revealed how less reputable brands can lack normal USB-C componentry, which can result in substandard performance. If you’re in the market for a new cable right now, see our top picks for USB-C cables.
Look for the warning signs: Look for brand names or logos that don’t look right. Strange markings, cords that are inconsistent lengths or widths, and USB-C connectors with heat emanating from them when not plugged in can all be giveaways that a USB-C cable is malicious.
Use the O.MG malicious cable detector: This detector by O.MG claims to detect all malicious USB cables.
Use data blockers: If you’re just charging and not transferring data, a blocker will ensure no data is extracted. Apart from detecting malicious USB-C cables, the O.MG malicious cable detector functions as such a data blocker.
Use a detection service: If you’re dealing with extremely sensitive data for a business or governmental organization, you might want to employ the services of a company like Lumafield to detect malicious cables with 100 percent accuracy. Any such service will come with a fee, but it could be a small price to pay for security and peace of mind.

Y'ALL ARE GETTING HOW BABY DRONES ARE MADE IN THIS POST!!! After all this time...
I'm actually writing all the life stages in this post cuz why not.
Sooooo, there are 6 life stages.
1. Untrained Neural Network (UNN, Pill Baby)
Equivalent of an infant. (Age: 0-1)
This is the only one with an image. A rushed one too.
So the parent(s) have to buy/build a baby drone to be able to have the kid. Yes, there can be only one parent :3. The pill baby is small, being around 40 cm high and 20 cm wide. (16~ inches high and ~8 inches wide)
The UNN has two USB ports, for the two parents to be able to transfer data and personality code to the UNN. There CAN be built an UNN with more than 2 ports for Poly couples.

I'm mentioning the Ear anatomy here(point 3). There HAS to be used an USB-USB cable for the data transfer to the pill baby.
There are some chances for the UNN to need multiple tries for the data to be processed after a transfer, it depends on how faulty the code of one or both of the parents is. NOTE: AS code is VERY fucked up.
After the data is processed, the pill baby will start getting used to the real world, learning the languages. It will not have a voice box yet though, but it can understand things. A drone can also have fucked up code, kinda like we do (talking about mental/emotional disorders, I just had to include that as a neurodivergent).
The kinds of data that are transfered usually are:
-Light colors (for the eyes, ears, the system in general)
-Drone Type (Worker Drone, Disassembly Drone, Ward Drone, and the subcategories - I'll make a post on all the kinds, I promise - Solver Hosts, Detective Users, Playback Masters, etc)
-Personality Traits
-Mental/Emotional Disorders (like ADHD/ADD, OCD, Autism, you get what I mean)
-Height and body type (even though that can't be seen on the pill baby, the next stage will be more obvious)
The baby needs to be kept at temperatures between -20° and 20°. It's very fragile, so it's the best to have a cover! It does not need oil if it's the baby of (a) Disassembly Drone(s). Also you do NOT want to play with the code of an UNN. One wrong move and FATAL ERROR is all you'll see :3
2. Network in Training - Stage 1 (NiT-1)
The equivalent of a toddler. (Age: 1-5)
The body of the NiT-1 is bought/built by the parents, but there's no use customizing it. Then the conscience is moved to the new body, and it needs around a week to adapt. In the adaptation period, it will "modify" the body to match the body type that was coded before.
It now has a voice box, and it starts talking. If it's the child of (a) Disassembly Drone(s) then it has to start feeding on oil to not overheat. If it's a mix between a Worker/Ward Drone and a Disassembly Drone, then there are 50/50 chances of the kid needing oil. If it doesn't need oil, then it obtains a charging port and it starts needing to charge like Worker & Ward Drones.
It will have a tail if at least one of the parents has one.
The NiT-1 start learning how to walk, talk, and it begins being taught basic things. It has 0 survival skills, so better keep an eye on it :3. If it's the child of (a) Disassembly Drone(s), then it starts learning how to change their hands. If it's a mix, then it depends on what kind of arms they have.
The NiT has a relatively small body, the usual ones being 3/2 of the size of an UNN.
3. Network in Training - Stage 2 (NiT-2)
The equivalent of a child. (Age: 6-11)
This time, the NiT-1 "evolves" to the NiT-2 body by itself. The changing period can range between one week and 3 weeks.
This time it may have wings (depends if one or both of the parents have wings), but it sucks at flying, so better not encourage it to fly too early.
The NiT-2 will be taller, and it will have better control over its body.
There's not much about it. It starts going to Elementary School (Classes 1-5) and it starts developing habits, hobbies and a sense of social integration. (Feelings of embarrassment, guilt, mercy etc)
4. Network in Training - Stage 3 (NiT-3)
Equivalent of a teenager/adolescent. (Age: 12-19)
The NiT-2 changes its body by itself (that's how they age after the UNN state). The changing period is between 2-3 weeks.
If the kid has wings, then it gains more control over them, and it can start flying (it will need a flying test and a flying certificate to fly freely though)
The NiT-3 goes to Middle School (Classes 6-9) and High School (Classes 10-12). It will have some more fixed ideologies and principles.
5. Fully Trained Network (FTN)
Equivalent of an Adult. (Age: 20-49)
NOTE: At the moment of the first explosion on Copper 9, all the drones were 25.
An NiT-3 will undergo a short change time period, of around a week.
The now adult drones have to get a job to contribute to society. There is no money or economy, say communism how much you want, idc about it.
They also have the code complex and finished, that means that they can have an UNN.
6. Old Network (ON)
Equivalent on an Elder Person. (Age: 50-death)
When the screws get rusty and the system gets outdated, a FTN is called old. When the system shuts down, that's when they die. The same goes for ANY drone with a high healing factor, since that's not enough to help with old age. At that point, there can't be any resurrection or moving of conscience.

Hi danie!! ive been super hyperfixated on tkdb and ive been curious about the in game models, ive seen people access them through live td and would liked to do the same. i found your post explaining the process after having the files but i couldn't find one that would explain how to access those files and get them from the phone to the pc!
Hi! Welcome to the hyperfixation!! :'D I thought I explained it briefly in a post but. It's fine I'm planning on making another post with the full step by step process in the future, and making sure it's in my pinned for easier access 👍🏾 but in the meantime I can try and explain!
If you have an iphone you're out of luck unfortunately. Apple doesn't let you access your files to my understanding, even wired in.
If you have an android or you use bluestacks to play the game on your pc(and I'm sure it's accessible if you play tokyo debunker through the pc google play thing but I haven't explored that myself yet) all you need is a wire that connects your phone to your device! You probably already have one of these if you have a USB cable that connects to your phone for charging, but some cables are charge only so do be aware of that.
As a reminder you'll basically only have access to the ones you've seen in game. Sometimes they get cleared too, so you may be missing some you haven't seen in a while. They do also sometimes update sprites, especially to add expressions or features or to fix things. However they may not delete the original folders that contain the old stuff when they redownload them, and AssetStudioGui doesn't try and read them in order of last updated. So you may have to manually go through and figure out which is the newest and which was updated and so on. . .which is much easier from on your phone and i recommend File Manager Plus if you plan on doing this a lot and it's available to you! You could also just delete the contents of the folder and manually redownload everything as you go tbh lol
All you have to do is plug your phone into your PC and navigate to the game files. That should be something like This PC\[PHONE NAME]\Internal storage\Android\data\com.zigzagame.tokyodebunker\UnityCache\Shared . If you have it on an SD card first of all tell me how because that'd make transferring so much easier for me-- and you can't/don't want to remove the SD card to insert into the device, the file path will be a bit different for the first few folders.
The filenames are encrypted so you won't know which is which. You're just gonna have to move all of them unfortunately. This will take A While depending on how much is in there. Once you've done that though you can kind of work around that in the future by only moving any newly updated or added folders, but that requires another app that lets you navigate to the files from your phone(see: previous rec of File Manager Plus) and sorting them by date and. It's a whole thing that can take a long time.
Hopefully that helps! Lmk if you need any further explanation 👍🏾
#danie yells answers#danie yells at tokyo debunker#datamining cw#zombvm4iden#this does work with some other games btw#not all unfortunately but many games i've played or that others have played work the same way and can be datamined the same way#ikemen series does last i checked housamo does obey me classic does i think nightbringer too uuuh twst works the same. . . . . .#the filepath may be totally different for those games tho idr what it was for housamo or obey me

I DID end up getting an old-ish but still newer than my current phone phone specifically for big storage and micro SD slot for even bigger storage and going to not get a sim card for it and use it solely as an MP3 player with wifi specifically for lastfm scrobbling and not as an upgrade from my phone since that's using degoogled android out of a deep burning personal loathing for google as a company, because I am possibly the only organism with that specific use requirements lol
And I gotta admit it is kind of satisfying, too, going in and enabling developer options and then plugging my phone into my computer and typing in ADB commands to uninstall bloatware and bullshit and literally anything I want, I could make the phone unusable without a factory reset if I wanted to, reminds me of when I was a kid messing around changing all of the settings and exploring system files in fuckin' windows 98 hand-me-down family computer turned my first very own computer goddamn sudden swell of nostalgia sidetracked oops
What's not satisfying is the reminder of how fucking bad things have gotten when, before doing this whole "gutting android like a fish and ripping out its unnecessary internals" process, I was getting fucking ads in the notification space? Preinstalled unremovable apps for facebook shit and google shit? The fact that after a system update, suddenly the USB cable connected to my computer that had been working perfectly fine five seconds ago suddenly stopped being in file transfer mode, instead showing a "check your charger cable! you're on slow charge mode!" notification and nothing else, and upon looking this shit up found threads of people saying the same shit happened to them, sudden slow charging and not transferring files after an update, with replies ranging from "same thing happened to me! any updates? no!" to "buy specifically a samsung cable! :)"
only to finally find an article saying that a "security update" blocked USB connections except for charging, like holy fuck removing the headphone jack wasn't obnoxious enough, no longer including disc drives in desktop computers wasn't obnoxious enough, are they seriously trying to turn USB into phone charging only and not data transfer, like there's not already an option that popped up when you plugged a phone into a computer confirming that you wanted to be able to transfer data between the computer and the phone, because tech companies are for SOME FUCKING REASON... AAAALLLL about taking all autonomy and ability to customize and FUCK AROUND with our OWN TECHNOLOGY, away from individual users, and...
...people just live like this? The majority of people who didn't happen to gain the technological know-how to be aware that they might be able to disable or remove or mitigate this bullshit, and be comfortable actually attempting it... just fucking. Live with it?
Hooooly fuck
