U.S. Postal officials acknowledged during a media briefing that there have been some local-level issues with the delivery of election mail this fall, including in Philadelphia. "When issues are brought to our attention, we address them quickly," said Adrienne Marshall.
Asked by NPR about what kinds of local-level issues with election mail have been resolved recently, Marshall did not directly respond.
As of Oct. 22, all USPS processing facilities and most retail and delivery units have reopened in North Carolina and Florida, Steve Monteith said.
All mail delayed by Hurricane Helene has been delivered to "every accessible delivery point," and mail that can't be delivered is "being sent to local post offices, where it will be delivered when it's safe to do so," Monteith said.
On Oct. 21, the USPS started putting in place the "extraordinary measures" it usually uses in the final weeks before a general election's last day of voting. Marshall said those measures include "extra deliveries and collections, special pickups, specialized sorting plans."
This month, USPS started using a new sprayed-on cancellation postmark that says: “As in past elections, USPS is ready. If you choose to vote by mail, please mail early."
Monteith said they "chose to use that as another method to get our message out."
The bottom line for mail-in voters is still: Look up your state's ballot return deadline and mail back your ballot AT LEAST ONE WEEK BEFORE the deadline.
UPDATE: In an email sent after today's media briefing, USPS spokesperson Martha Johnson said the Postal Service "has worked and resolved and continue to work and resolve a range of isolated issues including wrong ZIP codes, bad addresses, ballot envelope design and other such concerns.”
Asked for specific steps USPS is taking to verify all facilities follow election mail policies and procedures as the USPS Office of Inspector General recommended, Marshall said in a statement that USPS "is constantly training as well as reviewing proper policies, processes and procedures" with employees.

I have seen some shit from customers in this line of work. Seen plenty from the USPS, too. But never in all my years have I seen this sort of tag-teamed, synchronized, by-your-powers-combined fuckery as this.
The customer was supposed to send in his title and signed paperwork to get the rest of his money three months ago, and has been faffing around.
I finally get an envelope from him today.
Just an envelope.
Stamped.
Processed Friday.
With the EZ™️-Seal™️ Strip©️ unpeeled and intact.
Did he send the envelope but forget to put anything in it? Did he put stuff in it that (naturally) got lost in the mail thanks to the envelope being open? Did the post office not notice? Did they notice and not say anything, because dude is, frankly, a bit of a dick?
I sure as shit don't know, because he won't answer his phone.

Steps to take when USPS Package gets Delayed
USPS handles millions of packages daily, and it is a very complex system. Unfortunately, things can sometimes go wrong in the process. That is why it is very important to give yourself some "lead time" in order to ensure that you receive your package when you expect to receive it. This is especially important when shipping internationally - international packages tend to have more friction in the USPS system due to customs delays and other environmental forces that are outside of the control of the Postal Service.
Tumblr media
The first thing to do when you receive in transit arriving late update from USPS is to check the status update on the tracking website. This will tell you what the current status is, and whether or not there is an estimated delivery date on there.
If your package has this status, then it is likely just stuck in a pile that needs to be sorted out or is somewhere in limbo at a facility. This can happen for a variety of reasons - Covid-19 and holiday volume can put a lot of stress on facilities, for example.
In addition, if the package is heavier than what the label indicates it may get sent back to the sender for extra postage or be slowed down by transportation-related issues, such as truck breakdowns, traffic congestion, or road closures. This can be frustrating to deal with, but there isn't much you can do beyond waiting a bit longer. If this happens, then it is best to go to your local post office and ask for help - they can usually be helpful in figuring out what's going on.

Something else to be aware of:
Since 2020, the USPS has shut down or downsized even more sorting facilities, some of which were major regional processors and remote encoding centers (thanks to that gangrenous carbuncle DeJoy).
I live in PA, a swing state, and they've rerouted all the mail from the Lehigh Valley processing center (which handled the mail of literally millions of people) to Harrisburg, causing delays of 3 days to a week or more. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing hasn't happened in other swing states/ blue states.
Also, drop-box policies have changed in a lot of places since then, so be sure to check with your state and municipality if you're going to go that route.

What Makes a Mailing List ‘Deliverable’? Understanding CASS, NCOA, and USPS Standards
In the world of direct mail marketing, the quality of your mailing list can make or break your campaign. It doesn't matter how beautiful your postcard is or how compelling your offer sounds—if your mail never reaches the intended recipient, it’s wasted money. For small businesses investing in mailing lists to drive sales, understanding what makes a mailing list deliverable is essential.
Accurate, up-to-date mailing lists are the foundation of any successful campaign. That’s why professionals rely on terms like CASS, NCOA, and USPS standards to determine deliverability. If you’re considering small business mailing lists or working with small business lead generation services, this guide will help you understand how deliverability works and what to look for when choosing a list provider.
📬 What Is Deliverability and Why Does It Matter?
Deliverability refers to the percentage of mail pieces that actually make it to the correct address. It’s not enough to have a list with names and addresses—those entries must be accurate, standardized, and up to date to be accepted and delivered by the USPS (United States Postal Service).
Low deliverability = wasted print, postage, and effort.
According to USPS data, nearly 17% of Americans move each year, and about 40 million addresses change. If your list isn’t regularly updated, you’re likely mailing to outdated locations or incorrectly formatted addresses. The result? Returned mail, lost sales opportunities, and unnecessary costs.
🧩 The Three Components of a Deliverable Mailing List
Let’s break down the three key tools used to ensure mailing list deliverability: CASS, NCOA, and compliance with USPS formatting standards.
1. ✅ CASS Certification: Getting the Format Right
CASS stands for Coding Accuracy Support System, a program developed by USPS to improve the accuracy of ZIP Codes, addresses, and delivery points on mail pieces.
How it works:
CASS-certified software checks each address on your list against USPS records to verify:
Correct street name and number
City and state consistency
Proper ZIP+4 code
Delivery point (DP) barcode information
Why it matters:
Ensures your mail meets USPS addressing requirements
Helps you qualify for bulk mailing discounts
Reduces returned mail due to formatting errors
If your mailing list provider isn’t using CASS-certified software, walk away. It’s the most basic indicator of address quality.
2. 🔄 NCOA Updating: Tracking People on the Move
NCOA stands for National Change of Address, a database maintained by USPS containing approximately 160 million permanent change-of-address (COA) records filed over the last four years.
How it works:
Mailing lists are cross-referenced with the NCOA database to see if recipients have moved. If they have:
The address is updated to the new, forwarded address (if available)
The old address is flagged as undeliverable if no forwarding address exists
Why it matters:
Keeps your list current and accurate
Ensures mail reaches the intended recipient, even after relocation
Avoids postage waste on undeliverable addresses
Small business lead generation services that incorporate NCOA updates into their data hygiene process help their clients maintain high deliverability over time.
3. 📏 USPS Address Standards: Format, Sequence & Compliance
USPS also provides detailed standards for how addresses must appear on envelopes, including:
Address line order (Recipient name > street address > city/state/ZIP)
Font size and color
Barcode placement for automation compatibility
Addresses must be readable by sorting machines to qualify for automated rates. If your mail doesn’t meet USPS standards, it may be delayed, returned, or denied discounts.
📊 How High Deliverability Improves ROI
If you’re investing in small business mailing lists, your return on investment (ROI) depends directly on how many people receive—and respond to—your mail.
Let’s compare:
Scenario
Undeliverable Rate
Reach
Cost/Result
Poor-quality list
20%
800 out of 1000
High print/postage waste
Deliverable list (CASS + NCOA)
95%
950 out of 1000
Lower cost per lead
High deliverability doesn’t just reduce waste—it increases response rates, improves campaign tracking, and makes your budget work harder.
💼 Real-World Use: Deliverability for Small Business Success
Example 1: Local Insurance Agency
An independent insurance agent ran a campaign using CASS-certified and NCOA-updated homeowner lists from a reputable provider. The campaign targeted three ZIP codes with high new homeowner activity.
Result: 3.5% response rate, 24 new policies, and 6 referrals within 45 days.
Example 2: Cleaning Service Startup
A residential cleaning company initially bought a cheap mailing list with no CASS or NCOA verification. More than 20% of mailers came back undelivered, and only 5 leads were generated.
After switching to a verified list through a small business lead generation service, response rates tripled and repeat bookings grew steadily.
✅ What to Look for in a Mailing List Provider
If you’re shopping for mailing lists for business, make sure the provider offers:
CASS-certified address formatting
NCOA updates within the last 90 days
ZIP code, income, homeownership, and demographic filtering
USPS-compliant formatting assistance or mailing services
A history of working with small business mailing lists
Providers like Homeowners Marketing Services specialize in this, offering fast turnaround, accurate homeowner data, and ongoing support to help small businesses target locally and grow affordably.
📌 Final Thoughts
Deliverability is not just a technical concern—it’s a strategic necessity. For small businesses relying on mail campaigns to reach local homeowners, high-quality mailing lists are the difference between wasted effort and steady growth.
By working with verified data, understanding CASS and NCOA, and adhering to USPS standards, you ensure your message lands where it matters most: in your customer’s mailbox. When you invest in deliverable mailing lists, you’re not just sending mail—you’re building relationships, generating leads, and moving your business forward.

fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
I have already had to CLOSE DOWN MY PRIMARY BUSINESS for the last few months because I currently can't ship anything via USPS (our local hub just... stopped processing packages) and it's not cost-effective to ship most of my merchandise via UPS or FedEx. I make things like custom jewelry and refrigerator magnets, mostly small things, and nobody wants to pay $28 to ship a $10 item. The USPS cutbacks are already killing me, and coupled with the new tariffs and rising energy prices, they're going to drive me out of business.
Soon-to-be-former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy set out to "modernize" (read: hamstring) the USPS while owning a personal stake in private shipping companies (yes, it's a clear conflict of interest, but he's a Trump appointee, so are we surprised?). He ordered downsizing and the removal and destruction of tens of millions of dollars' worth of mail sorting equipment that now makes it impossible for some regions to process their mail. We're already seeing delays of four to six months in parcel delivery. I have multiple items that I personally mailed LAST YEAR that have not had their tracking updated in four months. More cutbacks are not a solution.
Next time you're around when the mail gets delivered, ask your delivery person if they're understaffed or not.
But don't hold them up too much, they have a lot of work to do.

I stand at the end of the long line. At the first window, someone is processing passport applications for a large family. New posters about hazardous materials and how to properly cover up old labels when reusing cardboard boxes are taped up on the wood-paneled walls. ALWAYS PROHIBITED IN USPS NETWORKS: with a grid of diamond-shaped warning labels below. At the next window, a postal worker finishes attending a customer and steps away, then comes back to use a long pole to pull down the rolling blind so that everything but her hands on top of the desk are obscured. Only one other window remains open. The line moves slowly. A rack of greeting cards, a rack of envelopes, priority mail express flat rate small boxes. Above each counter window there is a black octagon framing a golden figure of a man with a sheet draped loosely around his waist. He holds up a horn as if he’s about to break the shuffling quiet of the post office, the dull hum of waiting. An old woman asks for two books of stamps and is presented with puppies, flowers, snakes, an array of colorful piñatas.
Now that I’m nearer to the front of the line, I can see there is a small pile of clean, yellow sand on the floor below the recently closed window. It’s a tidy pile, with its own neat system of dunes, as if someone had poured it there gently, or maybe they themself dissolved suddenly just before I arrived. No one else seems to notice and no one is doing anything about it. If we are 70% water, how big would that person have been? Just a child? How much of our body is air, or just empty space? I feel like it must be a significant amount. If they can fit a person’s ashes into an urn, then this pile of sand could have only twenty minutes ago been a full grown adult. Now I can see the right side of the pile is marred by the edge of a shoeprint, which seems immensely disrespectful. And now the hands of the postal worker behind the closed counter window appear below the blind and they are handling two stacks of cash, sorting, and attaching a slip of paper to each with a stapler.

Address Correction 101: Ensuring Your Mail Reaches the Right Destination
In today's fast-paced world, efficient and accurate mail delivery remains a cornerstone of effective communication. Whether it's a heartfelt letter, a crucial business document, or an eagerly anticipated package, ensuring that your mail reaches its intended recipient is paramount. Central to this process is the accuracy of the address. Even minor errors can lead to significant delays, misdeliveries, or returns. This comprehensive guide delves into the essentials of address correction, offering actionable insights to ensure your mail consistently arrives at the right destination.
Tumblr media
The Importance of Accurate Addressing
Accurate addressing is more than just a formality; it's the linchpin of the entire mail delivery system. An address serves as a set of directions for postal services, guiding them to the recipient's location. Errors, omissions, or inconsistencies in this information can disrupt the delivery process, leading to:
Delayed Deliveries: Postal services may need additional time to interpret or correct ambiguous addresses.
Misdeliveries: Incorrect addresses can result in mail being delivered to the wrong recipient.
Returned Mail: Undeliverable mail due to faulty addresses often finds its way back to the sender, incurring additional costs and time.
Common Addressing Mistakes
Understanding common pitfalls in addressing can help in avoiding them. Some frequent errors include:
Misspelled Street Names: Even a minor typo can misdirect mail.
Incorrect House or Apartment Numbers: Transposed or wrong numbers can lead to delivery failures.
Missing Apartment or Suite Numbers: Omitting these details in multi-unit buildings can cause confusion.
Wrong ZIP Codes: An incorrect ZIP code can send mail to an entirely different area.
Improper Abbreviations: Using non-standard or incorrect abbreviations can hinder automated mail sorting systems.
Standard Components of a Mailing Address
A standardized mailing address typically comprises the following elements:
Recipient's Full Name: Ensures the mail is directed to the correct individual or entity.
Street Address: Includes house or building number and street name. For example:
123 Maple Avenue
Secondary Address Information: Details like apartment, suite, or unit numbers. For instance:
Apt 4B or Suite 210
City or Town Name: The locality of the recipient.
State or Province: The regional designation, often abbreviated.
ZIP or Postal Code: A numerical code that facilitates efficient mail sorting and delivery.
Best Practices for Address Correction
To enhance the accuracy of your mailings, consider the following best practices:
1. Verify Addresses Before Sending
Before dispatching mail, especially in bulk, it's crucial to verify the accuracy of addresses. Utilizing address validation tools can help in this regard. These tools cross-reference addresses against authoritative databases, ensuring they are correct and complete.
2. Use Standardized Address Formats
Adhering to standardized address formats improves the efficiency of mail processing. The United States Postal Service (USPS) recommends:
All Capital Letters: Enhances readability.
No Punctuation: Except for hyphens in ZIP+4 codes.
Standard Abbreviations: Using recognized abbreviations for street designations and states. For example:
ST for Street
AVE for Avenue
NY for New York
3. Include Return Addresses
Always provide a return address. This ensures that undeliverable mail can be returned to you, allowing for corrective action.
4. Leverage Address Correction Services
Services like the USPS's Address Element Correction (AEC) can assist in identifying and rectifying problematic addresses. AEC processes addresses to correct or provide missing elements, turning problematic addresses into accurate ones or identifying them as potentially undeliverable. This service enhances the deliverability of mail by ensuring addresses are complete and standardized.
postalpro.usps.com
5. Educate Staff and Stakeholders
For businesses and organizations, it's essential to train staff on the importance of accurate addressing. Implementing standardized procedures for collecting and inputting address data can significantly reduce errors.
Tools and Resources for Address Correction
Several tools and resources are available to assist individuals and businesses in maintaining accurate address records:
Address Validation Software: These programs can process bulk address lists, correcting errors and standardizing formats.
Online Verification Tools: Many postal services offer online tools to verify individual addresses.

How does a package travel across the country in just a few hours? Let’s break it down in this fun and informative guide.
What is Overnight Shipping?
Before we dive into the details of how does overnight shipping work, let’s define what it actually means. Overnight shipping is a premium service offered by major carriers to deliver packages the very next business day. This means if you order something today before the cutoff time, you’ll have it in your hands by tomorrow!
Why is Overnight Shipping Important?
Convenience: No more waiting days or weeks for important deliveries.
Business Efficiency: Companies can fulfill urgent orders quickly.
Emergency Situations: Need a last-minute birthday gift or an essential medical item? Overnight shipping saves the day!
How Does Overnight Shipping Work? A Step-by-Step Breakdown
Understanding how does overnight shipping work requires looking at the logistics behind it. Here’s how your package moves from sender to recipient overnight:
1. Order Placement and Cutoff Times
When you select overnight shipping, you must place your order before the carrier’s cutoff time, which typically falls between 5 PM and 8 PM. Orders placed after this time will be processed the next business day.
2. Package Pick-Up and Sorting
Once the order is placed, the carrier collects the package from the sender. The package is then taken to a sorting facility, where it’s categorized based on destination and priority level.
3. Transportation via Air and Ground Networks
One of the key components of how does overnight shipping work is the use of cargo planes and express delivery trucks. Packages traveling long distances are flown via overnight cargo flights, while local deliveries are transported using trucks.
4. Arrival at the Destination Hub
After the overnight flight, packages arrive at a local distribution center early in the morning. Here, they are scanned, sorted, and loaded onto delivery trucks.
5. Final Mile Delivery
By early morning, the package is on a delivery truck, ready to be dropped off at your doorstep before the end of the business day.
