PLASTIC MENACE: A GENERATIONAL THREAT
Plastics are choking the world’s oceans, rivers, shorelines and water bodies. It is getting worse inland these days. Despite this menace, authorities in several countries have shown little or no concern to ban its usage because they believe the country’s growing is mostly dependent on plastic products. This presentation with examine this problem in Africa, effects on the environment and efforts being made to limit plastic waste by some countries on the continent. According to United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Ghana currently produces 1.7 million tons of plastic waste annually with only 2% being recycled, implying that most of the plastic waste generated ends up in the environment. Waste infrastructure has failed to keep up with economic growth, leaving its capitals drowning in plastic trash. Streets and waterways and other urban areas are regularly inundated with single-use plastics such as pure water plastic bags, water and soda bottles, plastic food containers and shopping bags.
Plastic pollution is caused by the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment. It can be categorized from micro to macro-plastics. Plastic pollution can take different forms including the accumulation of waste, the accumulation of marine litter, fragments or micro-particles of plastics and non-biodegradable fishing nets, which continue to trap wildlife and marine creatures.
youtube
Up to 12 million tons of plastics entered the ocean in 2010 alone (Jambeck et al., 2015). According to the UNPD, more than 8 million tons of plastics enter the ocean each year. For the past two decades, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) in Ghana, as the regulatory body responsible for policy formulations to deal with plastic waste, has had consultative engagements including conferences, seminars and workshops with stakeholders in the industry to help deal with the plastic menace in the country.
Tumblr media
CAUSES
But what are the causes of plastic pollution?  The main cause is negligence on the part of households, businesses and some institutions. In fact, it is estimated that 80% of marine litter comes from land. It must be stressed however that the bulk of this waste mainly comes from household waste, which is poorly recycled (or not recycled at all), dumped in landfills or abandoned in nature. This waste is carried by the winds, pushed by the rains into sewers, streams, rivers, and finally end up in the oceans.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS
The environmental implications or effects are disturbing. This plastic debris represents chemical pollution in several ways. They contain compounds that can be chemically transferred to organisms during ingestion. Some of these molecules are potentially toxic and can accumulate in the body. Besides, plastic bags also affect the growth of crops, by hindering the process of photosynthesis in agricultural fields. Other negative effects on animals include the imprisonment of animals in nets or large debris. It is a cause of significant mortality of marine mammals, turtles and birds. A second direct effect is ingestion that concerns the entire food chain of the marine ecosystem. Researchers are now beginning to find traces of micro plastic in our food chain. There are potential side effects on humans as well. Because of the chemical additives used during plastic production, plastics have potentially harmful effects on human health. Indeed, exposure to toxic chemicals coming out of plastic can cause cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity and other world problems.
Tumblr media
SOLUTIONS:How do we solve plastic pollution?
Many African countries are talking this problem half-heartedly. However the government of Rwanda has taken the bull by the horn and banned the use of plastic shopping bags, generally believed to be the main pollutant in the country. There is the need for more plastic recycling plants using simple and inexpensive technology but most political leaders are not showing the will to do so. Besides, there should be an intensive campaign to clean our oceans and surroundings on a constant basis though, not a long-term solution, the best way to address plastic pollution is to change our mindsets and habits with this controversial but nonetheless very useful material.
REDUCE
To efficiently reduce plastic pollution, there is an evident need of reducing our usage of plastic. It means changing our everyday behaviors and not using plastic when there is a better alternative to it and only using plastic when strictly necessary.
REUSE
In Kampala the capital city of Uganda, they had a slogan: “If you can’t reuse, then refuse”. Plastic may cause pollution when poorly managed but it has lots of advantages too, such as being resistant. Many plastic items can therefore be reused or used for different purposes. Before disposing of plastic items, it is important to consider how they can be reused.
Link: https://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/recycling/blogs/wild-bees-are-recycling-plastic-study-finds
RECYCLE
Plastic recycling consists of collecting plastic waste and reprocessing it into new products, to reduce the amount of plastic in the waste stream; and the last crucial solution to consider is education, in order to increase awareness and behavioral change.

CONCLUSION
The plastic menace facing many African countries looks gloomy. However several countries are now making practical efforts to find lasting solutions to this problem through reuse, recycling and the ban of plastic shopping bags. Rwanda has set the pace for other countries around the world to follow.

Histopathological and Immunochemistry Characteristics of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors at Two Sub-Saharan Hospitals
https://www.hilarispublisher.com/open-access/histopathological-and-immunochemistry-characteristics-of-gastrointestinal-stromal-tumors-at-two-subsaharan-hospitals.pdf
Abstract
Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal system. Histopathological and immunochemistry examination takes an important part in confirming the types of GISTs, to choose appropriate therapeutics for patients. Patients demographics, anatomic sites, histopathology and immunochemistry characteristics of GISTs are unknown in St Francis Hospital Nsambya (SFHN) and Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI).
Objectives: This study aimed to explore the demographics, anatomic sites, histopathological and immunochemical characteristics of GISTs in St Francis Nsambya Hospital and Uganda Cancer institute.
Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted. The study population included patients with a histological diagnosis of GISTs who presented between 2018 to 2021 in both facilities. Clinical, pathological and immunochemistry data was collected and analyzed.
Results: A total of 146 records/blocks of patients were reviewed and out of these only Histology and immunochemistry was done on 81 blocks/ patients. Majority of the patients were aged 40 to 59years, (42%) and had a median age of 57 years with IQR (45-65). There was a male predominance of 51.9%. The commonest tumor site was the stomach, (81.5%). The commonest histological type was spindle cell (79%) followed by mixed (11.1%) then epithelioid 8 (9.9%). Most of cases in our study were benign (80.1%) and mitotic count ≤ 5/50 HPF in 71.6% cases. All cases with low mitotic rate were mostly benign with a p value of <0.0001.
Conclusion: We found GISTs were more common in male gender, stomach being the commonest site and 19% of GISTs were below 40 years. Spindle cell was the commonest histologic type and most of them were CKIT positive. Malignancy was correlated with non-spindle cell type and high mitotic rate.

Taurus: April 20th through May 21st
Date of Birth: May 3rd, 1987 Place of Birth: Kampala, Uganda Time of Birth: 1:11 PM
Positive Traits: Generous, Dependable, Down to Earth, Independent Negative Traits: Stubborn, Possessive, Indulgent, Jealous
Rising Sign is in 13 Degrees Leo
You love to be the center of attention and you want to appear strong, confident and dominant. You are very proud of yourself, sometimes quite vain even. When all around you are bedraggled and falling apart, you look like a million bucks! Very dignified and honorable, you enjoy the power and privilege, but not the responsibilities, that come with leadership. You are very idealistic but can also be quite stubborn. Others impress you only if they have integrity (but wealth, power and influence can also turn your head). You prefer rich, elegant surroundings and possessions, and will try to acquire them as your budget allows. Physically, you are very impressive - - at your best you have a regal, charismatic demeanor and bearing. Try not to be such a showoff!
Sun is in 12 Degrees Taurus.
You are known for being patient, slow moving and careful -- you love to prolong and savor enjoyable times. You appreciate and need comfort, ease and warm surroundings. Be careful of a tendency to become placid and self-satisfied and to overeat (especially sweets). You require strenuous situations in order to grow and mature properly, even though you try to avoid them. Affectionate, even-tempered and slow to anger -- when you do become emotionally upset, you are also slow to forgive and time must pass before your calm returns. You demand real results from any situation -- abstractions are very difficult for you to comprehend. Very artistic, your hands love to mold and shape things. You portray an earthy, physical sexiness that others find quite seductive.
Moon is in 13 Degrees Cancer.
For the most part, you are very strong and secure emotionally. You intuitively know what to do to make others feel comfortable, loved, accepted and needed. You naturally enjoy feeding and taking care of others. Be careful that your mothering does not turn into smothering. At times, you tend to feel that those to whom you are attached can never do anything without your assistance and support. Extremely sensitive by nature, it hurts you deeply whenever anyone criticizes you. You have an almost desperate need to be loved and wanted and needed by everyone with whom you come into contact, and you go out of your way to be accommodating to them.
Mercury is in 07 Degrees Taurus.
A slow and careful thinker, you like to present ideas visually and concretely. Abstractions are quite difficult for you to understand. For you, everything must be practical and useful in order to merit your attention. You are a perfectionist -- you enjoy being skillful enough to handle the dexterity required of fine craftsmanship. Cautious and conservative in your thinking, you are very slow to change your opinions. You are more apt to respond to an appeal to your feelings than to an appeal to logic or reason.
Venus is in 12 Degrees Aries.
You are a very affectionate person but you hate to be tied down. You are more than willing to be the aggressor in initiating new relationships. Indeed, once you have set your sights on someone, you tend to pursue him or her ardently and passionately. But you do demand your own way in a relationship. Try to give in to your partner's needs and desires once in a while.
Mars is in 18 Degrees Gemini.
Your energies get turned on quickly whenever anything interests you. But you have a very short attention span and it is difficult for you to complete tasks because something else more interesting always seems to be beckoning. You love to debate and argue, usually in a spirit of friendly disagreement. But watch out that you do not get too overly aggressive or antagonistic or others will be quick to take offense where none may have really been intended. You need to be in constant physical motion -- sports or daily exercise is a must for you if you are to feel fit and healthy.
Jupiter is in 14 Degrees Aries.
The way that you grow and develop is by being an uncompromising individualist. You have a great need to be yourself and to explore your latent talents and abilities. Do not be afraid to let yourself go and develop self-confidence and pride in your accomplishments. But try not to become so self-centered that you ignore the needs of others. Also, you may have to build up your self-discipline in order to focus your energies properly.
Saturn is in 20 Degrees Sagittarius.
Basically quite conservative, you respect traditional authority figures and are very thankful and supportive of the laws and institutions which govern your life. You learn and accept new ideas only after having very thoroughly examined them. Ideals and abstract concepts are important to you only if they can be used in some practical fashion. You are so practical and so orderly that you have natural skills in planning, administrating and organizing.
Uranus is in 26 Degrees Sagittarius.
You, and most of your peers, have the tendency to think that all ideas, customs and traditions from the past are outmoded and irrelevant. You are attracted to radically new ideas, philosophies and religions that will, hopefully, cause sweeping changes throughout the world.
Neptune is in 07 Degrees Capricorn.
You, and your entire generation, will idealize work, practicality and the ability to attain reasonable goals. But, because you will also stress the need to be selfless and giving, you may find it difficult to attain your goals unless you have lowered your expectations on all fronts.
Pluto is in 08 Degrees Scorpio.
For your entire generation, this is a period of intense research and discovery in areas that were heretofore considered mysterious, remote or taboo. The root causes for many complex occurrences will be unearthed due to the intensity and thoroughness of the search.
N. Node is in 11 Degrees Aries.
You're at your most comfortable when involved in group activities outside of your immediate family circle. You delight in getting involved with others in neighborhood civic or political activities, especially if you can be a part of the leadership of the group. Your zeal and overabundant energy bring out your real creativity when you can work toward tangible results -- things that will immediately benefit those around you. You have a real gift for getting the most out of charity drives and community benefits. Take time out between projects though, because you tire out easily and your effectiveness becomes greatly diminished when your energy is depleted. Also, don't even think of trying to get involved at a peripheral level -- you need a total commitment to feel personally fulfilled. Let others bake the cookies and set up the chairs -- you should be the one to tell everyone what to do and when to do it!
