More Fantasia movies. But after the July assortment I think I’ll put a moratorium on watched/read notes, unless I really want to write about something; I like having a record in my blog of the media works I consume, not least because it solidifies them in my memory, but I keep falling behind and it’s stressing me out.

Sons of Denmark: a speculative near-future political thriller about a Denmark that makes a xenophobic right turn after a terrorist attack. The plot begins with a radicalized young Muslim man who’s recruited to assassinate a slickly fascist politician who seems likely to win the next election, then dog-legs in an unexpected direction. It’s twisty and polemical, not what you would call a feel-good time, and there are some weaknesses that scream debut feature (the writer-director is Ulaa Salim): multiple uses of “Dies Irae,” women who exist to fry breakfasts and be protected by their menfolk, and a tilt into melodrama in the final act that vaguely reminded me of Dancer in the Dark. Not that the plot’s similar, but you never want to feel like the script’s turned everyone dim and incompetent to prove a point. The talk-show-ready white nationalist Martin Nordahl is a chillingly spot-on creation, though, not least because in 2019 these guys are just out there diatribing for one to gauge fiction against.

Ride Your Wave: my guess is that Masaaki Yuasa needed a break from or after Devilman Crybaby, and who can blame him. A summery, poignant shoujo manga narrative in which everyone is basically wholesome and well-meaning and well-adjusted (except for those punk kids who keep setting off illegal fireworks). The main characters are firefighters and surfers, and once the magical realism gets cranking it kind of feels like the inception of the project was the director’s desire to... animate water? And the daily gestures from which wholesome, well-adjusted lives are compiled, like making pour-over coffee. It’s all disciplined in support of the story, though, not an extended flight of fancy like Night Is Short, Ride On Girl.

DANMARKS SØNNER (Sons of Denmark)

Manchmal fühle ich mich wie ein filmisches Trüffelschwein, immer auf der Suche nach den besonderen Celluloid-Perlen. Wenn ich mal eine aufspüre, dann freue ich mich drüber und teile meine Eindrücke gern mit Euch...

DANMARKS SØNNER ist eine solche Perle! Durch Zufall stieß ich vor Monaten bei einer BluRay-Recherche auf amazon UK auf das Cover des Films und zack war das Interesse da. Ein provokanter Polit-Thriller, natürlich gar nicht leicht zu verarbeiten in diesen schwierigen Zeiten, aber dafür kann der Film an sich ja nichts...

Wie so oft ist es auch hier gut, nicht zu viel über die Handlung zu wissen. So viel dennoch: Regieneuling Ulaa Salim dreht die Zeit etwas vor, wir befinden uns in Dänemark 2024, durch einen Anschlag gewinnt eine ultrarechte Partei immer mehr Zulauf. Rechter Terror macht sich breit, Islamisten machen sich bereit zur Gegenwehr. Das ist die brandheiße Ausgangslage für einen Film, der dann auf nahezu alle Action verzichtet und uns stattdessen tiefe Einblicke in die inneren Dramen der Protagonisten gibt. Jedes Mal, wenn ich dachte, zu wissen wie die Taktung nun sein könnte, schlägt der Film stets neue Haken.

Trotz des lagsamen Tempos ist DANMARKS SØNNER immer spannend und sehr intensiv. Und natürlich rattert das Hirn ständig mit und fragt sich, wie weit wir in unserer Gesellschaft von so einer Zuspitzung entfernt sind. Diese Frage kann natürlich nicht beantwortet werden, aber Regisseur Salim wollte uns diese Frage sicher vorhalten. Handwerklich ist der Film solide, die Schauspieler sind alle richtig gut. Auffällig ist der spärliche Einsatz von Musik, aber wenn dann welche erklingt, ist sie stets passend, besonders Mozarts Requiem.

Auf der IMDB bekommt der Streifen nur eine 6,7 was allerdings eindeutig daran liegt, dass einige rechte Heinis jeweils nur 1 Punkt vergaben. Dieses spiegelt sich auch in den dortigen Reviews wieder. Für mich ist DANMARKS SØNNER ein sehr wichtiger Film, dem ich wünsche, dass ihn möglichst viele Leute sehen, um anschließend drüber zu diskutieren. Jeder, der Polit-Thriller mag, kommt an diesem Film schon mal gar nicht vorbei!

Mubi India January 2020 Releases: 62 Indian, World Films Announced

New streaming entrant Mubi has announced the list of 62 movies — 31 from India, and 31 from the rest of the world — that will release in January 2020 on its platform. That includes films from the likes of Satyajit Ray, François Truffaut, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Raj Kapoor, Gulzar, Bimal Roy, Shekhar Kapur, Shyam Benegal, Nandita Das, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Noah Baumbach, Yûzô Kawashima, Olivier Assayas, and Ram Gopal Varma among others. One film — Ladj Ly's Les Misérables — exclusive to Mubi, is currently shortlisted for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2020 Oscars. Mubi Lets You Watch Art Films, and Offers Free Movie Tickets In keeping with its policies, two new films — one Indian and international apiece — will be added every day, with each movie available for the next 30 days. While most Indian films, save for two — Benegal's 1975 drama Nishant, and Sai Paranjpye's 1980 drama Sparsh — are already available on other streaming services in India, the opposite is true for the international fare. Five of Truffaut's and three of Kawashima's previously unavailable movies are coming to Mubi India in January 2020. A few films premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam last year. In India, Mubi is currently available at an introductory price of Rs. 199 for three months. After that, it costs Rs. 499 per month.
