I split myself between two distinct frames of contemplation. How to extend humanity further into the future and how to how to amplify the beauty, wonder & magesty of human experience within existence.

The two play within each other. The Sustainability of human life means more time to increase Wellbeing. Greater wellbeing means more stability as we move into an ever more uncertain future.

Sustainability & Wellbeing.

Survival & Freedom. In a different lingo.

Freedom is a word I have a difficult relationship with, as so much is carried in it, often with excess disregard for the importance of what is carried there.

Freedom to choose how to pursue wellbeing often translates into being manipulated or excluded from wellbeing. Freedom to Fail is really licence for society to fail you. What Freedom to Fail acts as a faux convergence for is Freedom to Experiment & Freedom of Non-Partisipation. Both of which require a reliable social safety net, not the absence of it.

A reliable social safety net can present a risk to sustainability, if structured poorly, because of freeloaders. So the obvious solution is to create a government system to sort the freeloaders out of the social safety net. This gradually degrades into a new kind of freeloader over time, corruption.

This very basic presentation of the territory of the Ideal of Freedom demonstrates the source of the principle split of Left & Right in America.

But this is a false dichotomy. These values aren't in some form of fundamental tradeoff. There are a Class of solutions that simultaneously reinforce both Sustainability & Freedom across time.

I don't have a final name for this Class yet. Not as a separate conceptual entity. Antifragile is a technical term for things that grow stronger under stress. That would be part of the name if the understanding is more realized.

I don't have a fully realized definition of this Class of solutions yet. UBI is a model that doesn't solve the systemic risk side perfectly, but solves much of the freedom side well. Enough money that survival pressure is hard to capture & manipulate against people to control their behavior. (Freedom of Non-Partisipation.) Not so much money that the incentive to participate in society is lost, encouraging experimentation.

If fundamental resources cannot be taken away, easily at least, then sustainability is also improved, as the loss of fundamental resources, & the hoarding of them, is a primary cause for conflict.

UBI has one weak point in that the risk of collapse is shared between all people. If we structure the model right, then we collectively encourage ourselves to do work that supports us all, and the risk is minimal. If structured poorly, we all prefer for others to do the work, and so the risk gradually expands, until society collapses. For UBI to work, it requires a simultaneous cultural revolution. A shift in collective mindset. For us all to shift gears to do productive work we enjoy, instead of productive work we get paid for, and unproductive activities we enjoy.

This kind of culture would be both high in Freedom and high in Sustainability. Eventually it wouldn't need UBI to support the culture, it would become at every layer the Class of systems that are antifragile and mutually reinforce both Sustainability & Wellbeing.

Only a strong third party is going to change the direction of the country. Nothing else is capable of it.

My feed is currently exploding with the fact that Biden picked Kamala Harris as his veep. I would like to remind my friends of the following points:

1) She's a cop, and we're allowed to be unhappy. We're allowed to be mad, even.

2) We are not just voting for the Presidency. We are also voting for Ruth Bader Ginsburg's replacement. And a lot of other stuff, but let RBG retire or die secure in the knowledge that doing so will not fuck over this country.

3) "Kamala Harris is a cop and ACAB" and "Kamala Harris's nomination represents a number of important firsts in the field of politics" are both solid takes that do not cancel one another out and in fact coexist because we do not live in a magic Star Wars world where we have just have the Light Side and Dark Side.

4) The immigrants currently being held in cages and doused with weapons-grade disinfectant by our own government will not appreciate the subtleties of our political choices if we elect Trump for a second term through our inaction or dithering. For that matter, the people dying of COVID because Trump gutted the pandemic response team and then mishandled our response to the virus will not appreciate them. Because they're dying or dead. Because we couldn't get our shit together four years ago. My own mother may be one of these people. I'll never know for sure.

You're all adults, and I'm not here to tell you what to do. I will, however, share what I'm going to do: I will vote for Biden and his cop sidekick in November. And then if Trump gets a second term anyway, I'm arming myself and getting my ducks in order to go underground, because my Jewish wife and I are not going into the gas chambers quietly.

It has to be said. I still think our current leadership is garbage, but I've been red-pilled pretty hard in recent months. I don't care how many followers I may lose for openly saying this, but the people I want to engage with are the ones who have different thoughts and opinions who are actually respectful, capable of having a real conversation about issues, understanding the nuance to them, and being able to shift their perspective when presented with new evidence that counters the narrative they seek so strongly to uphold, and sadly, it's most of my more liberal left-leaning acquaintances who are unable to have these seemingly uncomfortable conversations. All I want is for all the rational people to unite and get us out of this mess together. The answer to the question beginning these Walls of text "why don't vote?" posts is simple.

People aren't that stupid.

But you ARE that stupid. You are "smart" enough to see all the reasons Trump is bad, all the reasons Biden is kinda pathetic & while not worse than Trump, & then stupid enough conclude the problem in America is Trump, not a system so broken & pathological half the country became convinced Trump was a the least bad option, then four years later still find him the least bad option.

Recently both parties had the political power in our system of government to pass any law they as a party wanted, trivially. No roadblocks from the other side. A complete systemic political victory for their team. The democrats did ACA a horribly broken Healthcare bill that failed to provide any deep change to Healthcare, like we the people needed, & instead acted as a payoff to the industry. Both parties did fuck all to actually fix our system. Either they don't understand what is wrong, or are actively working against the American people.

Not voting isn't the answer, nor is it a good resolution to the guilt trip game of idiots like the OPs of this post. If everyone who is eligible to vote voted third party it would be a landslide. So get out & vote! Vote your conscience. Vote for candidates you believe in. Don't worry about emotionally abusive politics. If we had a different voting system from #PluralityVoting, say #RankedChoiceVoting or #ApprovalVoting we wouldn't have to choose between two hopeless candidates, the only "viable" options. We could vote for who we find best, regardless of if "Hitler" is running or not. The social construct of our voting system is what is broken. We need to fix it with a better system. The real answer to OP's question is people don't like being emotionally abused into/for partispating in a broken political system. They all know in their gut it is broken. Maybe they cannot clearly say why. They get most abused for voting third party, despite that being the most honorable & true vote. It's a vote by conscience for what they believe in.

With that level of causticness, toxicity from you & other assholes like you, who use "not understanding" as a pretense to deploy further emotional abuse; it is easier to pretend not to care. Sometimes to pretend so hard it becomes true not caring. Some people are, so burnt out they are truly indifferent. That trauma is directly on your shoulders.
