#Uta Utane is voiced by a text-to-speech program!’

I know that people headcanon that if V1 has a voice, it’ll be SAM (and I like that voice for them), but here me out:
V1’s voice sounds like AquesTalk.
More specifically, the one that serves as a voice provider for Uta Utane/Defoko, the default UTAU voicebank.

how much do you know about UTAU? can you send me some you think are cool? i don'tknow much about them but i like them. also there was this one vampire guy UTAU whose name i forgot that i liked i think
I LOVE UTAU i used to use it before i caved and pirated vocaloid (and eventually bought synthV) because um it is NOT intuitive to use especially anything that isn’t just a CV bank but i did always like that for pitch bends you straight up just out points On the piano roll which is almost exactly how synthV does it, vocaloid4 didn’t have that and it Sucked but anyway UTAU is fun and easy to get into the backend of to fuck with things like note blend and syllable velocity especially when it comes to re-editing the oto of a voicebank which i always found very tedious but Super satisfying and like therapeutic as long as it’s not for a VCCV bank or god forbid a CVVC bank.
anyway yes i like UTAU a lot but i’m not super familiar with most voicebanks just because since Literally Anyone can make an UTAU voicebank there are SO GODDAMN MANY like i made a couple at some point. never released it and the files were lost when my old hard drive went kaput but still it’s not that hard at all so you can see why there are So Many. the only ones i’m really familiar with are of course kasane teto, momone momo (who you may know from singing the nyancat song since the version nyancat uses is a cover featuring her), defoko/utane uta (the default UTAU voicebank who was made Not from a human voice but rather a text to speech program), and kazehiki (who i always thought would be a good voiceclaim for hibiki)
if you wanna hear good UTAU shit definitely check out tanjiro taidana he’s like the god of tuning teto and he also does shit with other UTAU too like sukone tei and yokune ruko and namine ritsu who are also very very popular UTAU
youtube
youtube
i always like when he does covers with a multilingual verse i always adore that shit
anyway i think the group of teto, momo, defoko, ruko, ritsu, and tei are like the BIG UTAU those are the ones most people are probably most likely to know or have heard of, they’re like the UTAU equivalent of the crypton vocaloids + gumi and gakupo i think.
also: not tanjiro taidana, but this is my FAAAAAAAAVORITE cover of anything utilizing defoko. flash warning though
youtube
i love defoko so so much i think she is my favorite UTAU besides teto cuz teto’s like the miku of UTAU everyone loves teto. but defoko is my other big favorite i should draw her again. and the others i mentioned too

【RANDOM OBSCURE UKGK TRIVIA OF THE WEEK 2 YEARS AGO】 PART 1
This has been on the cutting room floor of my drafts for over a year now because can’t work up the motivation get the attention span to discover and document EVERY part of the Vocaloid fandom that thrived from the creation of UKGK directly and the formatting keeps breaking, so this is just part 1.
sorry for mistakes or repetition in this post, I don't know if the tumblr app will let me edit this once its posted, I just think the friendly history and crossovers between the UKGK and Vocaloid fandom are neat.
THE TOKU SERIES (HISTORY OF DEFOKO)
The Toku series is a .dll and ghost for SSP (incompatible with crow and materia) that makes it possible to have a fully voiced talking ghost on your desktop using the default AquesTalk text-to-speech library. There are four types of engine versions: AquesTalk, AquesTalk2, AquesTalk pico and AquesTalk10.
Tumblr media
You might recognise her design even though she’s a fairly obscure ghost if you’re a Vocaloid listener because of UTAUloid, her design and voice are almost identical to the first default UTAU, Defoko who was released on March 6th, 2008.
but Toku (ukagaka) predates the existence of Defoko and UTAU altogether and was a big inspiration to the creation of UTAU.
The creator of Defoko / Uta Utane and UTAU, Ameya-p states on their blog that there’s minor design adjustments
Defoko’s first design is often incorrectly attributed on English Vocaloid fan wikis to Inuhebi-p because of this video uploaded on June 4th, 2008
Ameya (and Inuhebi-p?) borrowed Toku’s basic Ukagaka design but added a beret [x]
Defoko’s hair length is closer to a short bob than a semi-long mullet
Ameya’s redesign adds that Toku’s robot ears become a headset to make her more like a Vocaloid
the major technical difference is that Toku uses text-to-speech rather than a vocal synthesiser
Toku’s official ghost was designed using a freeware dressup program called “Nantoka”, which was created so that people who aren’t artists can make their own Ukagaka ghosts! (I believe most early utauloids and vipperloids also used this software too but Defoko's design was expanded beyond the default options in it)
Both still sample edited versions of the default AquesTalk “female 1 voice” (which will also sound familiar to Touhou and Pop'n Music fans due to Yukkuri Reimu and TILT)
Early references for Uta Utane (Defoko)

To make this slightly easier to comprehend (but still confusing for me trying to proofread my own draft and seeing I mixed them up...)
AquesTone ≠ AquesTalk
AquesTone = VSTi plugin (singing) -> 2 (4) variations of AquesTone
AquesTalk = tool (text to speech) -> 4 variations of AquesTalk (x / AquesTalk 女声1 - Vocaloid Database)
Contrary to VOCALOID voicebanks (and most UTAU voicebanks) that are sampled from real singers, AquesTalk is purely synthetic
