Making a mini messenger bag
Making a mini messenger bag
This mini messenger bag is a pattern and design that I’ve always loved. (Watch the short) As a matter of fact the purse I use every day looks exactly like this one. I’ve made it many, many times over the years for the Beehive Bazaar, a local handmade market in Utah, where I live. When a quilter friend of mine asked me to make one for her, we agreed on a trade and then 3 years passed… And now, at…

South Holland syrup maker poised to pick up market share from Aunt Jemima
Michele Hoskins felt a seismic shift for her company on a Tuesday morning in mid-June when Quaker Oats announced it was retiring the Aunt Jemima brand due to concerns about racial stereotypes.
“My life changed,” Hoskins said. “Our company changed. It brought awareness to us.”
Her South Holland-based company, Michele Foods, has been selling syrup and other products since 1984. Still, she has a tiny fraction of a market dominated by Aunt Jemima.
Hoskins saw her company’s profile suddenly elevated.
“The next day my tech guy called and said, ‘Your website has crashed,’” Hoskins said.
People were discovering her company on social media. After 35 years of hard work, she was an overnight sensation.
The Aunt Jemima brand dates back to 1889, according to Quaker Oats.
“I never in my wildest dreams thought that anything would happen that would make her do anything that would affect my company,” Hoskins said.
After building her business for 35 years, the south suburban entrepreneur is poised to expand her company’s operations.
“I should be in every major retail chain in the country. I should be able to supply customers who want my product,” she said.
Hoskins expects other competitors also will try to seize the chance to increase their share of the syrup market.
“I’m not going to take Aunt Jemima’s place. No one ever can, because she’s a different brand from a different era,” she said. “But if you’re looking for a minority company that sells in that category, I’m that. I think we should have the same opportunity as everyone else because we persevered.”
Hoskins said she launched her company in 1984 while she was going through a divorce and moving back into her parents’ home with her three young girls.
“I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life,” she said.
She decided to make syrup based on a secret recipe developed by her great-great-great-grandmother, America Washington.
“She was a slave who worked as a cook on a plantation,” Hoskins said. “The family she worked for did not like molasses. So she came up with this concoction of honey, churned butter and cream. It was delicious.”
Hoskins had her idea, but no clue how to start a business.
“I didn’t know anything about the food industry or product development,” she said.
She cooked up a batch on the stove and took it to local restaurants, whose owners told Hoskins the syrup separated and had to be reheated.
“I think at that point most people would have gotten discouraged,” Hoskins said.
She applied lessons she learned from teaching world religions at a private school.
“You can do anything if you put your mind to it,” she said. “I still believe that.”
Hoskins found someone to make her syrup so she could focus on marketing and distribution.
“I had a company at 35th and Kedzie that made the product for me and they would deliver it in 55-gallon drums in the alley,” she said.
She and her daughters would fill bottles and place handmade labels on them in her parents’ basement.
“I would take it around to neighborhood stores,” Hoskins said.
Even though independent South Side retailers agreed to stock her product, no customers initially bought it.
“It wasn’t moving,” she said. “I would go in myself and buy it to create this illusion of movement.”
To expand her reach, she visited the corporate offices of Jewel Foods in Melrose Park. She asked to talk with a buyer.
“They had never seen anybody walk in like that,” she said. “I was the first minority supplier for Jewel stores.”
She expanded her line to three syrup flavors: butter pecan, maple crème and honey crème. She worked to get her products placed in Kroger, Publix, Safeway and other grocery stores across the country. Companies were eager to do business with her, she said.
“I realized who I am made a difference, because diversity was hot,” she said.
By 1990, after she had been featured on local TV news, she was contacted by Walmart, which was looking to increase its diversity, she said. Then she was contacted by Harpo Studios.
“Oprah was looking for women who had made their first million (dollars),” Hoskins said.
She appeared three different times on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” she said. The first appearance led to her getting called back for a second.

“(Oprah) asked me something and I said you create your own destiny,” Hoskins said. “That’s profound, right?”
Her business continued to grow. She supplied syrup to Denny’s restaurants, then Popeyes chicken. While networking at a conference, she received another call from Harper Studios. They had learned a viewer in Texas had planned to take her own life but was stopped by something she heard on the television.
“She heard, ‘create your own destiny,’ and stopped,” Hoskins said. The woman started her own business and wanted to thank the woman who inspired her. The two appeared together.
“That was a tearful show,” Hoskins said.
She was featured in newspapers and business magazines and developed a reputation as a savvy entrepreneur. During an interview in her South Holland office, she pointed out a magazine cover about her doing business with General Foods.
“I called up the head of General Foods and said I had done research on Bisquick,” she said. “Seventy percent of people who buy Bisquick use it to make pancakes, and you only have 2% market share in the African American community. “I didn’t have a pancake and General Foods didn’t have a syrup. I said, ‘I can get you some share in the African American community by my face.‘”
They partnered and offered a coupon where shoppers received discounts when they bought Bisquick and a Michele’s Foods syrup together, she said.
She reached out to Kellogg’s. The maker of Eggo frozen waffles and other breakfast products had no syrup brand of its own.
“They wanted a share because Aunt Jemima had 77% of the syrup market,” she said. “I helped them develop Eggo syrup. I did that because when they did that, it brought light to the syrup category.”
Aunt Jemima’s market dominance left little room for competition.
“The syrup category is a very unsaturated market,” she said. “There are certain products in retail where you don’t add to them, there’s no room for them, there’s no market share. It’s just a closed category.”
Aunt Jemima continues to dominate market share, with Mrs. Butterworth’s, Log Cabin and Hungry Jack distant competitors, according to 2019 market data published by Statista. Aunt Jemima sells about $500 million worth of syrup annually, Hoskins said.
“Aunt Jemima owned that category by her image and by the perception that she was African American,” Hoskins said. “A lot of us grew up on that not understanding anything about advertising.”
Brands like Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben perpetuated stereotypes about Blacks, she said.
“People would walk past me to get to her,” Hoskins said. “For years I didn’t have my face on there.”
Hoskins said she introduced an illustrated image of herself to her syrup bottles about 18 months ago. She had resisted for more than 30 years because of something a grocery store buyer said to her when she was starting her business 35 years ago.
“I went out to one of these suburbs and told the manager that was my product,” she said. “He called (the regional grocery chain) and said, ‘I don’t want Black products out here. I don’t want anything that’s going to draw the African American community into my store.’”
Hoskins said she expanded her reach by masking her identity.
“I became a general-market product,” she said. “My product was sold in Colorado and Utah. No one knew this was an African American product.”
Hoskins has shared her expertise about business with others. She has mentored 225 people over the past 20 years, she said.
“Some of them have great products,” she said. “One girl was on ‘Shark Tank.’ I have a guy in Virginia that’s doing about $20 million (of business) a year with the government.”
At this stage in her life, Hoskins could look back on an award-winning, successful career, but she is not one to rest on laurels.
“We still did not have the consumer awareness that we wanted,” she said. “Right now we’re in about 6,000 stores.”
Michele Foods remains relatively small, with just four employees and modest annual sales, Hoskins said. Her product is made by a subcontractor near Cincinnati, she said. Profits and sales have never been her primary motivation, she said.
“I’m in it to create a legacy,” Hoskins said. “I feel that at some point we as a people have to understand how to build, create and pass on wealth.”
Most minority-owned companies sell out or fade away, she said. Hoskins wants to eventually pass her company along to her daughter Keisha, who runs social media and other projects for the business.
“If my great-great-great-grandmother could pass down this recipe, I surely could pass it along to her,” Hoskins said. “That becomes our legacy. It’s my legacy in a bottle. Whatever wealth is built into that, we break that curse.”

Looking Back at 2019: Our Favorite Moments
As the calendar year draws to a close and we give the BikeFlights.com vans' engines a few moments to cool, we're taking the time to reflect on some of our Outreach Team's highlights from the road. So grab a hot beverage of choice and join our West Coast, Mountain States and East Coast marketing managers around our proverbial campfire as each shares his favorite events of 2019.
Tumblr media
Colin Blanchard, West Coast Marketing Manager
West Coast by Colin Blanchard
The Sea Otter Cycling Classic
Early in the season nothing beats the Sea Otter Cycling Classic. Getting to see so many people stoked on bikes after a long winter is a blessing. The weather in Monterey, California was amazing this year. Riding in short sleeves and shorts was something that I had been missing.
Tumblr media
This year was a mix of work and play. We had just rolled out our partnership with UPS, which meant that a lot of people came by to talk about the change.
Tumblr media
The Sturdy Dirty Enduro
A new event for BikeFlights.com this year was The Sturdy Dirty in Issaquah, Washington which is a women’s specific enduro race.
Tumblr media
This event stands out for me because of how amazing the people at the event are, along with the riding. Having lived in Washington previously, going there feels like home and the trails, albeit hard, are always welcoming.
Tumblr media
They also had some of the best snacks on course!
North American Handmade Bicycle Show
Tumblr media
With frequent travels from east to west, I end up driving though Sacramento, California quite often. Getting to know the small bike companies in that town has been such a joy. That friendship was made even better considering the North American Handmade Bicycle Show happened there.
Tumblr media
Considering BikeFlights.com works with so many small builders, we have gotten to know them personally very well over the years. Getting to see them all in one place doesn’t happen enough. Friends from Squid Bikes hosted some great pick-up races, which made the event even better.
The Downieville Classic
Tumblr media
Downieville, California is one of my favorite places in the world. The mixture of the small town and epic riding is hard to match. BikeFlights.com has been working with the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, who hosts the Downieville Classic, for the past two years.
Tumblr media
So many riders travel from all over the country to race down these amazing trails, though I find the best part is hanging out with friends on rides. May it be taking a dip to cool off or sessioning some of the harder parts of their trails.
Single Speed Cyclocross Worlds
Tumblr media
Similar to the Sea Otter Classic, getting away from the colder temperatures is always a joy. Which is one of the many reasons I loved going to the Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships in Saint George, Utah.
Tumblr media
Though I do not own a cyclocross bike, that didn’t stop me from racing on my single speed dirt jumper. It wasn’t ideal for some of the course but it certainly made other parts more fun.
Tumblr media
This year has been an amazing year of meeting new riders all across the West. I can’t wait to see what will happen next year!

Mountain Region by Michael Potter
Land Run 100
District Bicycles Owner and Land Run 100 Co-Promoter, Bobby Wintle puts on one hell of an event in Stillwater, Oklahoma. A two-day party of inclusion, motivation and celebration of all people. Before the ride, a block party is hosted leading into the event that features music, beer and an atmosphere unlike any other event I’ve attended this year.
Tumblr media
If Land Run is not on your list - you’re missing out. This event guarantees a good day on the bike, regardless of weather. It is all worth it for that “welcome back hug.”
Tumblr media
Leadville 100
The highest event on our calendar, this ride starts at over 10,000 feet of elevation in Leadville, Colorado. If the elevation doesn’t take your breath away, the views will. Considering this was my first endurance mountain bike race, I felt nervous going into the ride, but left with excitement for more.
Tumblr media
The infamous belt buckle is the coveted prize for not only completing the course, but also meeting time goals. I rode away with the “big buckle!”
Tumblr media
SBT GRVL
A first year event usually brings some uneasy feelings, considering the unknowns of the weekend. SBT GRVL in Steamboat Springs, Colorado clearly considered those unknowns and crushed the route, communication, amenities and execution.
Tumblr media
This event has proved themselves already, but we have no doubt that their team has a few ideas up their sleeves to out-do their inaugural event. I look forward to challenging myself in Steamboat again in 2020.
Tumblr media
Dirty Kanza
My experience at Dirty Kanza in Emporia, Kansas was rocky to say the least. Multiple flat tires with sidewall tears took me completely out of contention in the 100-mile edition. Though my bad luck here sidetracked my goals, I learned a lot this day.
Tumblr media
I learned that the cycling community is generous and thriving. Maxxis provided me two new tires because they wanted to see me finish. They wouldn’t let me quit, and I’m thankful for that. Their tires brought me home, and the second half of my ride was such a great experience.
Tumblr media
USAC CX Nationals
Despite Cyclocross Nationals taking place on the west coast in Tacoma, Washington, I was lucky enough to attend and race myself. MFG Cyclocross constructed and performed one of the best cyclocross courses and events I’ve been to in years.
Tumblr media
We partied hard and hosted many friends throughout the week. We also enjoyed quality time among our team to bond and prepare for the new year ahead.
Tumblr media
2019 was a big year. I attended 23 events in 11 different states while traveling nearly 25,000 miles through an additional seven states. I moved from North Carolina to Colorado and learned the balance of life on the road, maintaining a healthy marriage and found a renewed vigor for riding bikes of all kinds. I am so excited to see what 2020 has ahead.

Santos Fat Tire Festival
Being based in the Northeast US, late February is about the time my tolerance for heading out on rides dressed like Randy from “A Christmas Story” reaches an all season low. This year was my third southbound trip to the Santos Fat Tire Festival in Ocala, Florida. The idea of a mountain bike festival in central Florida may evoke some side-eye glances, and for my inaugural Santos in 2017 I was simply excited by the prospect of winter riding bathed in warm sun on bare skin. However, the event itself and the Santos trails made the festival a highlight of my year independent of the escape from Philly winters, and 2019 was no different. The expo and demo-oriented festival is well organized, well attended and maintains a grass-roots feel. The organizers are friendly, helpful and go out of their way to make the vendors feel appreciated. And the food trucks are some of the best I’ve encountered at a cycling event.
Tumblr media
The Santos trails, while not at all mountainous, are certainly unique, providing fast flow through dense green forests of sand pine and scrub oak draped in hanging moss. The area even offers the Vortex Freeride Area to ensure all levels and styles of mountain bikers are satisfied.
Dirt Rag Dirt Fest PA
While Santos Fat Tire Festival is technically the first mountain bike festival of the season, the Northeast has to wait a couple more months to officially open their season. And even then, as exemplified by the conditions at Dirt Fest PAs of the past, Pennsylvania weather in mid May can be unpredictable and far from ideal. Although Dirt Fest PA manages to be a great time despite the weather, 2019′s conditions propelled it to an easy choice for this 2019 event highlight list.
Tumblr media
The sun stayed out, the sleeves stayed short, the wonderfully flowy Allegrippis trails stayed dry and camaraderie and celebration of mountain biking flourished.
 RAGBRAI
I probably don’t have to explain what the Register’s Annual Great Big Ride Across Iowa is, but it is challenging to convey the impressive scale of the event to someone who hasn’t witnessed it for themselves. Although the official rider number is sub-10,000, more accurate estimates generally hover north of 30,000. Needless to say BikeFlights.com is busy every July getting the bikes of many of those riders to and from the event. As the lone on-the-ground BikeFlights.com representative it’s also needless to say that my days around the start and end of RAGBRAI were also quite busy this year. Opportunities to eat and sleep during those days were at a major premium. But RAGBRAI makes this list for the time between the start and end during which -- in addition to catching up on sleep and resting my feet -- I got to explore opportunities Iowa offers in three of my favorite things: mountain biking, coffee and baseball. And it delivered on all three.
Tumblr media
Iowa may not be on anyone’s short list as a premiere mountain biking destination, but the small trail systems maintained by local organizations that dot the state are impressive and a much appreciated reprieve from many hours of windshield time in the BikeFlights.com van.
Tumblr media
It was also fun to see how the Iowa host towns embraced RAGBRAI.
JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes La Crosse
Every year the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund puts on at least five fundraising rides across the country. They’ve raised more than $47 million dollars for “research to deliver life-changing therapies and, one day, a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D)” and we’re proud to be an integral partner in helping the ambitious fundraising cyclists get their bikes to and from each event.
Tumblr media
The Mississippi River town of La Crosse, Wisconsin is traditionally the host of the first JDRF Ride event of the season. It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to connect in person with the organizers and bike team with whom I work closely all year, and spend some time in a great Midwest river town. Thanks to The Root Note for keeping me fueled with great coffee and vegan crepes on a daily basis!
Philly Bike Expo
Ok, it’s true I’m a born-and-raised-unapologetically-Philly-prideful-never-not-wearing-a-Phillies-hat kind of person, but I swear I’m not unfairly biased in declaring the Philly Bike Expo as one of the best events of the year. The volume and diversity of attendees, ranging from casual commuters to bike messengers to professional racers of all disciplines, makes it a no-brainer for vendors of all types. What really sets it apart, however, is the social dynamic coursing through the veins of the show. The big players are there, but it’s clear the small frame builders and makers run the show. Remember in high school when the punk kids had that party and the jocks finally realized they were cool and asked if they could come? Maybe not. But the Philly Bike Expo is kind of like that.
Tumblr media
Philly Bike Expo was also an opportunity to bring star Support Team member and personified sunshine Marci out to meet BikeFlights.com customers old and future (and perform some bubble trumpet).
This year marked my third and, sad to say, final year on the road full-time for BikeFlights.com. It was another great year spreading the good word of BikeFlights.com and working with partner events ensuring their participants can conveniently get their bikes and gear to and from the event. And although I’ll continue with BikeFlights.com in a modified capacity, I’m looking forward to pursuing a dream, along with my wife Natalie, opening a coffee roastery and cafe in Trenton, New Jersey, One Up One Down Coffee.

Examples of Good Packaging (22nd November 2019)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. The packaging for these premium eggs was designed by freelancer Azul Prado, who lives in Argentina and focuses mainly on graphic design, packaging and branding. I found this project on Behance, and was immediately intrigued by the way the design allows the egg boxes to be stacked. Unlike standard egg box designs, the shape of each end of the box means that when stacked, they can interlock with neighbouring stacks of boxes and makes sure there is less of a risk of them falling and being broken. This design element will also mean that in terms of marketing, when customers are specifically looking to buy this brand of eggs, it should be fairly easy for them to find, due to their unique appearance when held in bulk in stores.
Not only this, but the colour scheme of natural and neutral colours, to me, gives me indications that this product could be free range or at least produced with the animals needs in mind. This is further enhanced by how this designer has chosen to present the eggs surrounded by what looks like natural material, where you would expect to find eggs before they are taken to be sold. By doing this, the designer has also reduced the need for any other man made material to hold the eggs in place, making this packaging more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

2. This packaging, I also found on Behance, designed by Gen Design Studio (Gen Design Studio merged with Tekzenit Inc. and is also known as Tekzenit Creative Services in the USA) which was founded in 2005 and is a Braga, Portugal, headquartered creative services firm supporting small, medium and enterprise level clients.
In terms of how successful this packaging is based on their use of sustainable/environmentally friendly materials, I am unsure, as I could not find out what was used to produce this packaging. However, in the description, it was stated that the focus for the brand was to communicate to customers their care for bees and the environment, so I can only speculate that this was considered when choosing the most appropriate materials and manufacturing methods.
It was simply the aesthetic of this packaging which has driven me to class it as good packaging, as if I were looking to purchase a product of this category, the unusual outer packaging would draw my attention to this brand instantly. The fact that the jar of honey is also being put inside what looks like a carton means that it is unlike the standard packaging where honey is just sold in jars.
The distinctive band of colour at the top of each different flavour, also ensures that customers can work out which flavour is which very easily, so if it is a returning customer then selecting the desired flavour can be done very quickly and there is no confusion whatsoever. As all the chosen colours are also very bright, it means the brand as a whole would be easy to locate when on the shelf next to other brands of honey.
By using a slightly translucent material for the outer packaging, it means that the natural warm colour of the honey contained in the jar can still be seen through not only one layer of packaging, but two. This effect allows the customer to see a hint of the product they are buying, but still hides a lot of the design of the jar inside. This could be considered as bad packaging, as some customers would want to fully see the item they are purchasing and could be driven away by how they are unable to with this brand. However, some customers (I would be in this category) would find this intriguing and buy the product simply for the mystery of what is inside. I personally love the aesthetic of the outer packaging and would buy the product just so that I could also see what the brand has done with the inner packaging too.
The translucent material also indicates a more luxurious product, perhaps I think this due to how translucent materials are used less commonly than transparent or opaque ones. Translucent packaging is something that works for a small number of products, but in this case, it works well. It allows for the product to be partially visible, whilst also ensuring that the important information such as the brand name, logo, ingredients list etc. are clearly visible and are what the customer will focus on after being drawn in initially by the packaging.

3. Lush Cosmetics focuses a lot on promoting their brand as an environmentally friendly one, so it is important that as well as their products being manufactured from sustainable materials, their packaging must follow this ethos as well.
A lot of the products from lush, can be bought without the need for any packaging, but this particular product requires it. The entire pot and lid are made from recycled polypropylene which is also able to be recycled again after use. Not only this, but they use their packaging to ensure that customers are aware that if they return the empty pots after use, they will be rewarded, therefore encouraging consumers to waste less. Their packaging also features several mentions of which material was used, who personally made the product, how you can recycle or dispose of the packaging etc. By using the packaging to inform the customer of all this, it will allow the customer to trust the brand, as they feel in the loop.
As for the aesthetic of the packaging, I like how they’ve only used black, white and green. Obviously, the colour green emphasises their focus on the environment but I also think that the use of black as the main colour makes their products look high quality. By also not having much imagery and keeping a simple colour scheme, it strips the design back to basics and this, to me, shows how their brand uses mainly natural products and doesn’t add unnecessary artificial elements. I also like how they’ve chosen to use a script typeface for the larger text, as it helps to emphasise that this product is handmade, which may be an important factor that the customer considers when buying this product.

4. I really like this design for lightbulb packaging by CS Electrical company based in Belarus. The branding of this company is inspired by diagrams and circuits from scientific experiments. The idea for the branding of these particular products was based on the firefly, which then led to the brand using a variety of other insects for different shaped bulbs.
Design and Art Direction: Angelina Pischikova Packaging Contents: Light bulb Packaging Substrate / Materials: Paper
I think that what initially caught my eye with this packaging was how they have decided to incorporate the actual product and combine it with the imagery printed onto the box. Usually with lightbulb packaging, you either get a box which doesn’t allow you to see the actual lightbulb, and just has an image of it printed onto the packaging or you are able to see the lightbulb but the rest of the packaging then remains very plain and simple. In this case, you get to see the product that you’re purchasing, as well as having an interesting design on the packaging.
By choosing to use a different insect design for each type of lightbulb, it will actually make it easier for customers to recall which lightbulb they require. I think that if all the packaging was the same, it would be difficult for a returning customer to immediately spot which lightbulb they need to buy. By doing this, it means that the customer can very easily and quickly decide which product they need, and eliminates any confusion or frustration that could inhibit them from buying it. Not only this, but by having their only imagery as insects, it gives the impression that perhaps these lightbulbs are better for the environment than other brands might be, simply by incorporating nature into the imagery.
I also really like the choice of colour scheme for this brand. The dark navy, white and bronze colour scheme, to me, gives this brand a high quality feel. A lot of the time when using a metallic sort of colour within a design, it can make it look tacky and cheap. However, by only using small amounts of bronze to highlight important type, it actually improves the appearance of the packaging. The use of a lot of white and dark navy means that the imagery of the packaging stands out really obviously, due to the colours being so contrasting.
Finally, they have decided to use a sans serif typeface for the largest type on the packaging which is the product number and another way to identify which lightbulb is in each packaging. By using sans serif, it gives the packaging a modern, fresh feel and in my opinion this would make me think that the lightbulbs will be more successful than other brands, as they would have been manufactured using the latest technologies and processes to ensure that the product is as sustainable and efficient as it can be.

5. Beehive Honey Squares was a cereal packaging designed by Graphic Designer, Lacy Kuhn who completed a Bachelor of Arts in Design at Washington University. The brand name of this cereal is based on Utah’s state nickname (The Beehive State)
The unique shape for this cereal box is interesting, as it means that this cereal packaging would definitely stand out from the competition by contradicting the more standard cuboid cereal boxes that almost every other brand of cereal use. Immediately by doing this, when sitting on the shelves amongst the competition, this product will stand out, due to being a completely different shape to everything else. The aim for packaging in this area is definitely to be noticed before other brands, and by creating a unique packaging design, it ensures that this is possible.
I think that what is quite clever with the design of this packaging, is how it could be targeting such a wide range of consumers. The simplistic colour scheme and imagery means that it is a very sophisticated design which could appeal to older customers. However, the use of bright yellow as the background would make it stand out to a younger audience too, and incorporating the cereal being eaten by the bear on the front is quite playful. This along with the addition of the type ‘prize inside’ which would make younger customers want to buy it means that the target audience is very broad and therefore maximises the potential sales of this product.
All of the imagery used is natural, having the beehive, bees, bear etc. which gives the product itself a more natural appearance. To me, by doing this, the product is portrayed as less processed and therefore more healthy than other options. The natural imagery also makes me think that the brand is concerned with ensuring that their product as well as the packaging for the product, must be as environmentally friendly as possible. This is further emphasised by the packaging being mainly made up of card which can be easily recycled and is one of the less toxic materials that could be chosen when packaging food. However, there is a small amount of transparent plastic used, in order to show the product to the customers. Although this could be seen as a negative, by allowing the customer a view of what the packaging contains, it will make them more likely to purchase it, as they are aware exactly what they are getting for their money.

12 REASONS TO SUMMER IN A SKI TOWN
Tumblr media
Jackson Hole, Aspen, and Park City are widely regarded as the perfect playgrounds for those seeking a winter getaway. But the summer season is as good a time as any to pay a visit to these dynamic mountain towns. Recently, we sat down with The Scout Guide Aspen co-editors Erin Jones and Amy Groom, The Scout Guide Jackson Hole editor Jill King, and editor of the forthcoming The Scout Guide Park City Suzanne Dildy to discuss the top reasons to book a summer getaway out west. From extreme beauty and stellar shopping to outdoor activities galore, our insiders share why you should consider ditching the beach in favor of some clean mountain air.
WHY TO SUMMER IN JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING
The snow falls deep in Jackson Hole, and while this makes for a skier’s paradise in the winter, come the thaw, naturalists delight in the warm weather splendor. Here’s why The Scout Guide Jackson Hole editor Jill King recommends visiting during the summer months.
Take in an abundance of wildflowers. “After the winter depths of snow, the wildflowers are amazing,” King says. “I think they’re best viewed from my number-one favorite 12+ mile hike: Sleeping Indian in the Gros Ventre Wilderness, which can take you up over 5,800 vertical feet.” King notes that you can only view the wildflowers from May through September because of these are the only 60 continuous frost-free days per year—all the more reason to book a plane ticket now. On display will be Indian paintbrush, larkspur, columbine, rare calypso orchid, fireweed, and over 1,000 varieties only seen in high altitude.
Two words: wildlife babies. “The truncated summers here mean baby animals only have a short window to grow and put on fat reserves to survive the winter,” King says. In May and June, you have an opportunity to view elk and deer calving, grizzly and black bear cubs, moose and bison babies, as well as birds such as eagles, raven, great gray owls, and cranes. The best viewing, according to King, is near the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Grand Teton National Park.
It’s the best place for a wild ride. Due to the abundance of snow runoff, the lakes and rivers are full and ready for wild and scenic rafting, fly fishing, boating, kayaking, and canoeing. “My favorite spot is Goodwin Lake, found only after a six-mile hike,” King says. “It’s worth the effort, as fishing will bring cutthroat trout, or you can enjoy a chilly but crystal-clear dip in the lake.”
Instagram-worthy sunrise and sunset moments. With a visit to Grand Teton Park, you will be rewarded with views of glaciers, mountains, rivers, and lakes as your backdrop. One of King’s  favorite spots is just inside the park at Oxbow Bend. This is one of the most photographed areas, offering views of the Tetons and a plethora of critters against the backdrop of a stunning park sunrise or sunset.
WHY TO SUMMER IN ASPEN, COLORADO
This once-sleepy Colorado town was put on the map as a ski getaway. But here, The Scout Guide Aspen co-editors Jones and Groom share why Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley should be a top summer destination.
Tumblr media
The most gorgeous hiking, fishing, and horseback riding around. “One must-do is to visit the Maroon Bells, the most photographed peaks in North America,” Jones shares. And for good reason: there are stunning views and great hiking trails. As if that weren’t enticing enough, Groom adds, “In Aspen, you can hike through wildflowers, fish in Gold Medal waters, horseback ride through the aspens, and bike on and around our mountains.
Become acquainted with all things crafted. “Craft spirits, craft beers, and handcrafted food make this a culinary destination, no matter your palate,” Jones says. For the ultimate foodie experience, visit in mid-June, when the Food & Wine Classic makes Aspen a top destination for culinary talent.
Experience arts and culture all summer long. Kicking off with the Food & Wine Classic, the area continues to celebrate throughout the season with the Aspen Ideas Festival (mid-June), the annual Fourth of July parade, Aspen Arts Festival (late-July), and JAS Labor Day music. The town comes alive surrounding these happenings, Jones says, drawing big thinkers and cultural icons alike.
Enjoy a perfect summer stroll. The Aspen climate could not be more ideal for those who like to be out and about all day long. “With daytime highs in the 80s and evenings in the 60s, Aspen is neither too hot or too cold,” Groom says. Whether you’re taking in the Saturday Market or visitings the dozens of boutiques in town and in the valley, you’ll enjoy every comfortable second of your visit.
WHY TO SUMMER IN PARK CITY, UTAH
From extreme beauty and outdoor activities galore to the best in live music, Park City should top your list of must-visit summer locations, says The Scout Guide Park City editor Suzanne Dildy. Here’s why.
Tumblr media
Jaw-dropping beauty abounds. “Park City is home to  glorious views of the Wasatch Range Mountains everywhere you turn,” Dildy says. “The vibrant colors of the flowers, quaking aspens, and pine trees will take your breath away.” Plus, the weather is warm and sunny in the daytime, but cool enough at night to wear a sweater when the sun goes down, so you can enjoy all of nature’s splendor in comfort.
Outdoor enthusiasts rejoice. If you enjoy getting your heart rate up while on vacation, Park City is the ideal destination. Dildy says that you can choose from biking, fly fishing, camping, and many other summer activities while visiting the area. And if thrills are what you’re after, there are even zip lines and mountain coasters.
Listen to the music. “My absolute favorite thing about summer in Park City is that you can hear live music outdoors almost every night,” Dildy says. Her favorites places to enjoy the outdoor entertainment are at Deer Valley, where you can order a gourmet picnic, sip wine with friends, and enjoy world-class music while taking in the breathtaking mountain landscape around you.
Enjoy outdoor markets. A local favorite, The Park City Farmers Market, held every Wednesday from 12 to 5 p.m., is the perfect spot to load up on amazing local products ranging from produce and gourmet delicacies to handmade Native American jewelry. In addition, “The Park City Silly Market is a must on Sundays,” Dildy says. “Local vendors sell hand-made crafts, and you can enjoy lunch or a beverage from gourmet food trucks while listening to live local music.”
