Chaos. A seamless evening erupting in clamors and wails of terror. Dream-filled slumber fragmenting, hazy visions focusing to witness a reality of flames and billowing smoke…Instinct drove frantic movements- toppling bedding to dampen flames as she fled into the bitter air of night. Where she may have hoped for sanctuary however, she was welcomed by piling snow and a clash of waiting Romans. Illuminated only by rising flames, movements felt nearly ethereal, bare feet sinking well beneath an icy surface as she ran amidst a mix of others seeking refuge and unyielding warriors seeking only victory.

Gothic and Latin voices sounded from all sides, yet she failed to make sense of it, unable to parse anything over heavy thumping in her ears. The same thumping which demanded she ignore painful shocks trailing her legs in favor of pushing forward. Do not waver. You can reach the fortress. Frigid gusts easily slipped beneath the fabric of her tunic, chest growing tight with each labored breath. Daring to glance behind she nearly faltered at the sight of an approaching Roman upon a horse. Numbing fingers felt for her dagger only to feel nothing, a flash of memory reminding her of its place beneath her pillow. Any pleas for mercy fell silent on her tongue, opting instead to dive to the side and into the snow.

After that everything was a mere blur.

Marinette found herself on her knees, once violent shivers now barely racking her form as she looked upon the scorching fortress. Deep blue eyes framed by silent tears burning paling skin. Faint considerations danced in tune to wavering thought; reflecting on past decisions and weight of self, and whether in light of it all she had the right to mourn any aspect of herself. An answer cemented upon the sound of nearing steps, eyes fluttering closed in acceptance.

Heavy fabric draped over her shoulders, lingering warmth foreign against her damp skin. For a moment she believed it a mere manifestation of her mind- an offering of comfort in her final moments if not a cruel one for reminding her of scents which only made her think of him. Daring to curl her fingers into plush warmth she opened her eyes to find a face whose features she could trace without a speck of light. Whose physical flaws were nothing short of divine art in her clouded gaze. Unable to offer little more than a faint smile she let her eyes close once more.
