Shadowpeach Smooch 😘
Colored the end card frames of "I Need Him To Be Mine" for Valentine's Day!
And I have a new work in this au out on Ao3 if you're interested.
anyone got any tips on how to shade dark colors? I use a dark purple on a reduced opacity layer and that doesn't work to well with dark hair.

The Moon Comes To Shore
Moonlily Mer au chapter 3
Summary: Moon arrives on Melemele in search of the girl she saved, and makes a few new acquaintances.
Word count: 4.5k
Warnings: pretty tame as far as warnings go
A/N: I planned to update closer to Valentine's Gay, but I finished this today and I don't wanna wait.
Moonlily Mer AU Masterpost
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Moon knew it was foolish.
It was almost asking for death.
It was absolutely stupid.
Yet here she was.
That human girl she saved a while back had infected her brain. She couldn't stop thinking about her, she wanted to know if she was okay, and why that Pokémon considered her their mother, and how she ended up in her territory.
She wanted to be around her, see if she really was as good as the Pokémon said she was.
And frankly, she had nothing better to do.
Her normal routine of hunting and hiding and occasional exploring was so dull in comparison to that girl and her Pokémon child.
She was naturally cautious, she had to be, but her curiosity was bound to get the better of her one day.
That was how she found herself at the island Mom lived on in the early hours of the morning.
She had been observing for the last two weeks, she knew there were very few humans around at this time, and certainly not in the area she would be in. Keeping an eye out for any previously unnoticed humans, she made her way to the small, secluded cove she used to swim with Mom in.
Her mother took her there often, Mom couldn't exactly swim out in the open sea like they could. They only ever went at night and left well before any light started to bleed over the horizon.
Her mother left her there for Mom to find when she finally got herself caught.
Moon shook the thoughts of her mother from her mind.
She reached the cove and swam into the calm, sheltered waters, pulling herself onto the smooth, sun warmed rocks that lined the shore. She kept the tip of her tail in the water as she waited for Poppy to catch up with her, maybe she was a little more eager to get here than Poppy.
It gave her time to dry off so sand wouldn't stick to her legs. She hated that disgusting feeling, it felt so wrong.
By the time Poppy finally worked up the nerve to getting there, she had already changed forms and was just waiting for the little guy to show up. The timid Popplio muttered about how bad of an idea this was.
“Yes, yes, I know. You've told me already.” She sighed.
Poppy dragged himself onto the sand, he gave her a sour look.
“I'm going to be careful, I promise. I know you're worried, nothing is going to happen to either of us.” She told them.
She patted his fuzzy head, he nuzzled her hand with a soft chirp.
“I'm always gonna protect you buddy.” She swore.
With her life-long friend soothed, she took her human clothes she brought out of her sack. Female humans, she noticed, always had their chests and genitals covered, male humans would just cover their genitals. If she didn't want to stand out, she'd have to dress like she was a human.
I hope someone on the island signs. She thought.
She changed the flowy, translucent wrapping of fabric around her chest into an actual human shirt, deep, dark gray with pale blue almost white stripes on the ruffles. She traded the word out, loose cloth she tied around her waist for a wrapping skirt, also colored gray and light blue.
Humans also wore a strange sort of short, triangular pants underneath their clothes, she made sure to have one of those on, it seemed important.
Once she was fully changed, she did a turn around for Poppy to check.
“What do you think, do I look human?” She asked.
Her friend nodded, muttering about how bad of an idea this still was.
“Thank you for the input. Let's go.” She said.
Poppy jumped into her arms.
“I'm not carrying you all the way.”
Poppy squeaked.
“I don't care if they're small, you still have legs, and you'll use them.”
XXX
The island had changed since she'd last been there.
Not that she ever strayed far from Mom’s isolated residence, but she could still tell there was a significant change.
This beach was very busy, full of humans, the beaches she went to with her mothers were empty aside from them.
There was a stone path that led to the human settlement, those were cities if she remembered right. She hadn't seen one of those before.
It was very smelly and very loud.
The city had a thrum of electricity that made her wary of getting too close to it. She knew it wasn't an electric type, it didn't feel the same, her instincts still said to stay away from it.
Moon stepped onto the flat stone path, it was a lot warmer than the hot sands on her feet. Maybe I should have gotten those feet cover things all the humans had. She frowned.
She quickly walked to a shady spot, the stone was much cooler there. She had the removable foot covers back in her cave, she hadn't thought to bring any since humans didn't wear them when she saw them. Taking a look at the humans around her, she saw that it was the ones on the beach without the foot covers, and the ones on the stone had them.
She was also getting some weird looks from some of the humans passing by. They were staring. The urge to pick a fight and assert herself flared up.
They aren't trying to fight. They're not Pokémon, ignore it. She told herself.
She walked down the stone path all the humans seemed to be walking on. It was a lighter stone, people riding on Pokémon were using the darker path.
Humans were going in and out of the big buildings that lined one side of the paths. They were sometimes coming out with bags, and sometimes not.
It was strange.
She stopped at another shady spot to watch the humans go about their daily human things. It was interesting how they did their… hunting, they must be hunting.
“Whoa! That's such a cool Popplio!” A voice near her shouted.
She turned her head, a human boy, her age if she had to guess, with dark green hair and dark skin was walking in her direction. He was holding something in one of his hands that he seemed to have been eating, there were bites taken out of it. She fought back the urge to fight again, instead fully turning her body towards the boy.
“That's so cool! It's pink and purpley instead of blue! I've never seen one like that before!” He said once he was within a foot of her.
A bit too close for her.
She smiled and nodded.
Poppy was very unique. She hadn't seen one like him before either.
“Is he yours?” The boy asked excitedly.
Yes, he is my friend. She nodded. She knew humans had a strange way of talking about their relationships with Pokémon, but it seemed to be close enough to friends that her answer felt accurate.
“You're so lucky you have a Pokémon!” He said.
She grunted in agreement. The boy shrugged.
“Well, I'm going to get one today! Kukui is letting me pick from one of the Pokémon he's been working with!” He said excitedly.
She made another sound of acknowledgement. He took a bite of the thing in his hand, it smelled good.
“I’m Hau! What's your name?” Hau asked.
Moon curled her thumb and pointer finger into a crescent shape, tucking the rest of her fingers into her palm. She placed her thumb near the corner of her eye then moved her hand up and away from her face.
The boy stared blanky at her.
“Huh?” He asked.
She frowned and repeated the sign slower. His blank stare remained. She finger spelt her name, he still didn't seem to get it.
She looked around for something she could use to clue this boy in on her name. There was a shop with a moon symbol on it. She eagerly pointed to it then back to herself. He gave her a confused look
“Your name is Bowl?” he asked.
She shook her head, pointing up at the big round moon symbol on the shop.
“That's a bowl.” He said.
She rolled her eyes and pointed up at the sun above them then covered her eyes.
“Sun…? sleep…? Sleeping sun? Oh! Moon! It's Moon! Right?!” Hau exclaimed.
She nodded.
Finally. I need to find someone who understands me fast. She thought.
“So… do you not speak?” Hau asked a bit awkwardly.
She made a no motion over her mouth as she nodded.
“Oh… That's sad.” He said.
She shrugged. She could speak, just not to him.
“How do you talk to your lil buddy then?” He asked.
Well he understands sign. She thought.
She signed “jump and flip” to Poppy. The Popplio readily complied, doing a cute little flip. Hau clapped for him, he ducked behind her legs.
“Aww, he's a shy little guy, huh?” Hau cooed.
Moon nodded.
“It's so cool that he understands you.” He said.
Yes. Unlike you. She thought.
“Oh! You should come with me to meet Kukui!” Hau said.
Hmm… might as well, maybe this Kukui knows where that girl is. She thought.
She nodded.
“Great! I'm sure you'll like him! He's a lot of fun!” Hau cheered.
He started walking down the street, Moon followed after him.
The boy talked at her throughout the whole walk out of city area and into the less city more beach area that she was more familiar with. She grunted in acknowledgment every now and then, just to let him know she was still listening.
This area is close to Mom's den. She noticed.
She has no plans of seeing Mom on this little excursion. Mom didn't need to be reminded of what happened to her mother.
Luckily, Hau turned onto a side path that went in the opposite direction of Mom’s secluded den.
Good. I just hope Mom is staying inside today.
Hau led her to a human den near a calm, secluded beach. It was made out of wood like other human dens, and it wasn't in a secure, defensible position. Humans made their dens in such weird places.
The boy ran up the… steps, she was pretty sure those were called steps, and banged in the door. She climbed up and stood near him, not as close as he had been to her, he didn't have much sense of personal space. She set Poppy on the ground next to her, her arms were tired.
The door opened up-
“Hau! How are you doing? Excited to get your first Pokémon today?” A man asked.
He was wearing a white top covering that went down to his legs, but left his chest exposed. He also had something on his head.
“I'm so excited! I can't wait to have my very own Pokémon!” Hau shouted excitedly.
“Why don't you come in, Trixie dropped some malasadas off early, they're still warm.” the man offered.
“Trixie’s malasadas are the best!” Hau gasped, turning to her with the biggest grin on his face.
“You gotta try them!” He said.
“Okay.” She shrugged.
“Who are you talking to, Hau?” The man, the professor Hau had mentioned earlier if she had to guess, peeked his head out past the door frame.
She placed her hand near her forehead and moved it out away from herself with a smile.
“Well hello, I haven't seen you around before. What's your name?” He asked with an easy going, non threatening grin.
She went to sign her name again.
“This is Moon! She doesn't speak.” Hau said for her.
“Oh! Do you sign?” The professor asked.
“Do you understand sign?” She asked.
He was giving her a blank look similar to Hau’s, she frowned. Of course.
“Eh, sorry, I only know a few signs, my wife is fluent, I can get her if you want.” He said.
She nodded. Yes please.
“She's down in the basement, why don't you make yourselves at home while I get her?” He suggested, stepping away from the door.
Right, humans aren't as protective of their dens. She remembered. Her mother had gotten her fins in a twist once over Mom letting so many humans into their den. It had been a funny exchange to watch.
She followed Hau into the den, the boy made a beeline for the counter where something that smelled sweet and sour was sitting.
“What kind do you want?” Hau asked, reaching into a crinkly brown thing sitting on the cooking table.
She furrowed her eyebrows in questioning.
“What flavor do you want?” Hau tried again.
“What is it?” She asked.
He took a few seconds to get what she was trying to say.
“Have you never had a malasada before?” He gasped.
She shook her head.
“Oh my Tapu! You have got to try one! They're the best thing ever!” He shouted.
The boy shoved a warm ball of something into her face. She took it from him cautiously, she gave it a curious sniff. It smelled like the sweet doughy treats Mom would make for her mother. Her mother loved sweet foods.
She took a hesitant bite.
“Moon, come here!” Mom called out softly.
She stopped playing with her toys and looked over. Mom was making the treats Mama liked so much.
Mom always let her get a taste.
She went over to her, Mom picked her up off the ground, Moon looked down at the bowls on the cooking table. Mama's treats were sitting on one of the treat racks, and there was still some custard in the bowl. She clapped her hands when Mom gave her the bowl.
“I'm going to get your mama, sit tight.” Mom told her, setting her at the table.
Moon happily “cleaned” out the custard bowl. Meowth approached her, meowing for a taste, she hissed at the other Pokémon, this was her treat. Meowth hissed as he retreated back to Mom and Mama’s room.
“Calm down, Moon's only two, she'll share in time.” Mom said, patting Meowth’s head.
Moon looked up eagerly as Mom and Mama came out. She held the now clean bowl above her head.
“She's covered in custard.” Mama signed with a soft sigh.
“She makes a mess whenever she eats.” Mom said back.
“You're washing her this time.” Mama told her.
“Bath?” Moon asked excitedly.
She loved baths, she could swim and flash her fins around all she wanted without worry of attracting predators.
“Yes, once we're done eating.” Mom told her.
“Bath! Bath! Bath!” Moon cheered.
Mom got treats for herself and Mama while Mama sat down with her. Mama signed something to Mom too fast for her to understand, Mom got back up and came back with one of Mama's treats. Mama tore it in half and held a half out to her.
“Here you go Moonbeam.” Mama said.
Moon took the treat piece from Mama, giving it a curious sniff, she liked how it smelled.
She took a big bite.
The exterior was crispy, the inside was soft and doughy, it wasn't piping hot like it just finished baking, but it was still warm. There was a sweet, slightly fruity cream inside.
It was good. Good and familiar.
So this is what Mom was making. She thought.
“Do you like it?” Hau asked eagerly.
She nodded.
The doughy treat made her feel happy and sad at the same time. It tasted so much like what Mom used to make Mama her mother on those nights when they shifted and stayed in Mom's den for a few days. Mom was always so happy to see them, and so sad when they left.
She knew why now.
The sweetness of the treat turned bitter in her mouth.
“Can I have some?” Poppy asked.
She tore it in half, giving half to her friend and eating the other half. It was still good. Poppy liked sweet things more than she did.
“It's good, I like spicy more.” She signed.
“I know someone on Akala Island I think you'll like.” A woman said.
Moon turned her head, a woman with white hair and tan skin, not as dark as the professor's, was standing at the top of the steps that went below the floor. She smelled familiar.
“Oh! It's you, mystery girl.” The woman laughed, her husband laughed too.
“What's funny?” Moon scowled.
“Lillie won't stop talking about you, it's adorable really.” she sighed fondly.
“Lillie?” She asked. How does this Lillie know me?
“She’s your new assistant, right?” Hau asked at the same time.
“Self-appointed, she won't take no for an answer.” The professor said, shaking his head.
“Lillie has been asking about you since she woke up, she wants to thank you for helping her.” The woman told her.
Oh.
Oh.
“Her name is Lillie?” Moon asked.
“Yep, pretty name, right?” The woman prompted.
“Yes, it's very fitting for her.” Moon nodded.
The woman smiled at her. It was a strange smile, like the woman knew something she didn't.
“Ah, where are my manners? I'm Burnet, and this is my husband, Kukui.” Burnet introduced.
Husband is a human mate, right? I think that's right.
“I'm Moon. It is nice to properly meet you.” she signed.
“Have you met her before? I thought she was new!” Hau asked.
“Yeah, she saved Lillie.” Kukui said.
“Saved? Was she in trouble?” Hau looked to her.
Burnet and Kukui looked at her as well. Lillie must not have told them what happened yet.
“She was drowning.” Moon signed.
Burnet told Hau and her mate what she signed, it was nice to have someone who understood her around. Maybe Lillie has picked it up, talking to her would be nice. Moon thought.
“Is Lillie still here? I wanted to know how she was doing.” She asked.
“Lillie should be back any minute now, I sent her on an errand earlier.” Kukui said.
As if she was summoned, Lillie came in the door.
She still wore the bag, hat and dress she had that night.
“Sorry I took so long professor, they were a bit busy at-”
Vibrant green met storm gray.
Lillie stared at her. Moon gave her a smile and a wave.
“H-hello!” Lillie squeaked.
Her face flushed a bright red, Moon giggled.
“Hello again!” She signed cheerfully.
“O-oh! Y-you sign!” Lillie stuttered.
“Yes, do you?” She asked.
“I-i know some…” Lillie admitted, her pale face flushing with a pretty shade of pink.
“You know more than him.” She gestured towards Hau.
Lillie looked better than when she had last seen her. Obviously she hadn't just been tossed around by a storm, but it was more than that; her face was fuller than before, her smile was brighter, though a darkness lingered in those brilliant green eyes.
“T-thank you…”
“Her name is Moon!” Hau pipped up cheerfully.
“Moon… it's nice to have a name to the face.” Lillie mumbled.
Burnet and Kukui exchanged knowing glances.
“Well why don't you come on in and catch up with your friend? I can take that to the lab.” Kukui suggested, pointing to the white thing Lillie had.
“O-oh! Yes! Sorry professor!” Lillie squeaked.
Cute. Moon thought.
Kukui took the white thing from Lillie and slipped back downstairs, which must've been where the lab was.
“Want a malasada? Trixie made them fresh!” Hau offered Lillie.
“I-i wouldn't mind splitting one.” Lillie said, wringing her hands as she walked over.
Poppy jumped onto the table with an eager chirp. Moon patted his head with a snort.
“Poppy would like to share with you.” Moon signed.
Burned told Lillie what she said.
“Oh, I would be delighted to share with you Poppy.” Lillie smiled.
Poppy chirped happily.
“Poppy likes the sweet ones.” Moon told Burnet.
The human cut another malasada in half, giving one to Lillie and one to Poppy. Poppy immediately devoured his share, Lillie ate hers at a much slower pace. Odd, Hua was eating his very quickly.
“Professor Burnet, do you know why Poppy looks so different?” Hua asked.
“He’s a shiny, it's a genetic mutation that causes color variant in all species of Pokémon.” Lillie said.
Moon turned to her, the pretty pink was back in her cheeks.
“I-i said that out loud… didn't I?” She asked, wringing her hands again.
“And that's perfectly fine, I appreciate your insight.” Burnet told her.
The older human’s tone reminded her of how Mom used to talk to her when she thought she made a mistake. Lillie smiled, more pink going to her cheeks.
“Thank you, I did not know there was a reason why. I just thought Poppy was like that.” She thanked Lillie.
Her face turned even more pink once Burnet translated for her. She hadn't known humans could change color so much.
“It's not anything that important, I really don't know that much-”
“You knew something I didn't.” Moon signed before she finished.
She didn't like where Lillie had been going with that. Insecurity wafted off the other girl in waves, though there was nothing around to cause it. Humans were weird.
“He helped me save you, he made an air bubble so we wouldn't drown.” she gestured to Poppy, changing the subject.
Poppy looked up at her in betrayal, he barked at her for her most profound betrayal.
“He's shy and dramatic.” She told everyone.
“Awe I can't wait to have a Pokémon too! He's so cute!” Hua gushed.
“He is very cute.” Lillie agreed.
“We can leave now if you want?” Kukui prompted.
Moon jumped at the voice coming suddenly from behind, the professor was standing right next to them. She hadn't known humans could be so silent, that was just a Mom thing.
“Really?! Let's go, let's go!” Hua cheered.
He shook himself around on his seat that he ended up falling over, Poppy broke his fall with a water bubble. The boy shook his wet head out, giving Poppy a big grin.
“Heh, thanks for saving me too!” He said.
Moon gave the Popplio an appreciative pat.
“I'm ready to head to Iki Town if you are.” Burnet said.
“I'll grab my bag.” Lillie said, quickly get up and heading over to the… ladder on the wall.
There must be a sleeping place up there. At least Lillie has sense about safe sleeping placements, even if her den is very exposed.
“Moon! Do you wanna come too?” Hua asked.
“To what?” she asked.
“I'm gonna get my first Pokémon and then there's gonna be a festival to start the island challenge!” Hua said, jumping up from the ground.
“Island challenge?” She repeated.
“You don't know what the island challenge is?” Hua gasped.
“No… should I?” She asked.
“Aren't you Alolan?” Hua inquired.
She blinked in confusion. She was from this region, as was her mother and her ancestors going back many generations. So Alolan is what it's called now? Interesting.
“It's an Alolan tradition to test the strength of young trainers and give them the skills to survive on different islands with different Pokémon. Alolan people have been doing it for centuries. It starts with a festival to give the new trainers luck.” Kukui informed her.
“Sounds fun. I'll tag along.” Moon signed.
Wood creaked, she glanced at the ladder as Lillie was coming back down, she had that same bag she did the night they met. The bag shook slightly, she heard the quiet grumbling of the Pokémon within.
“Are you ready?” Kukui asked Lillie.
“I think so.” Lillie nodded.
“Great! We'll head over to Iki Town.” The professor said.
Hua ran out of the den followed by Kukui and Burnet. Poppy jumped into her arms with a pleading look, she rolled her eyes and adjusted her grip to be more comfortable.
“M-moon? Would you mind if I walked with you?” Lillie asked, her cheeks were that very pretty pink again.
“Yes, I'd like that very much.” She told her with a nod.
They left the den and caught up with the others in time to hear Burnet telling Hua that Trixie would be making her malasadas for the festival.
XXX
Calytrix made sure she was completely alone before she pulled her shell horn out. She gave the signal that it was safe to surface.
The shell's low call rang out through the quiet night.
She sat at the edge of the tide pools and waited.
It wasn't long before brilliant pink eyes peered up at her from below the water’s surface.
She smiled at the other girl in the water. Kaimana gave her a soft one back.
“Are you coming up?” She asked, patting the spot next to her.
Kaimana glanced around, they could never be too cautious in their meetings. The other girl pulled herself out of the water, her fins and tail shifting into human legs seamlessly.
Her brilliantly pink eyes turned to a rich, glittering silver that shone in the dim. She knew how beautiful Kaimana was under the full moon’s light, it was a shame they couldn't meet during full moons.
Kaimana snuggled close to her, she didn't mind that the other was still wet, she wrapped an arm around her partner.
“Missed you.” Kaimana sighed.
“I missed you too.” She whispered, kissing her forehead.
A salty tang clung to her lips, she rifled around her bag for one of the malasadas she had brought. Kaimana perked at the noise, her eyes went wide with excitement.
“Oh? Do you want something?” Calytrix asked coyly.
Her partner scowled at her, then lunged for her bag, sprawling her body across her lap. She held her hands up in defeat, letting the other girl dog through her bag for her prize.
Kaimana pulled the still warm malasada out with a victorious chirp, happily indulging in her victory prize. Calytrix braided her long hair as she ate, it was silky smooth despite Kaimana spending most of her time under water.
Pokémer magic. She mused.
“You need to come to my place, I can make you fresh malasadas.” She commented.
“Your den isn't safe.” Kaimana signed.
“I know, I know.” She sighed.
Living in (hao lio city look up) had its benefits, sure, but it was much too crowded for her liking. And with how cautious her partner was, their time together was going to be more of this, small stolen moments when the rest of the world was asleep.
She didn't want their time to end when the sun rose, she wanted to see Kaimana’s face first thing in the morning and kiss her and cuddle with her until it was too late to be first getting out of bed.
I really wish I could breathe water. It would be easier for both of them if she could just follow Kaimana to her home.
“I would like to, when you have a safer den.” Kaimana added, noticing her silence.
Calytrix smiled. Kaimana was so kind, too kind sometimes.
“It's alright, your safety matters more.” She told her.
Kaimana smiled back.
“Want to go for a walk? I've been meaning to get your opinion on den locations.” She asked.
“Of course, I have to see if you've remembered anything I taught you.” Kaimana snickered.
Calytrix gathered her things, and joined hands with Kaimana for a walk around the cliffs.
One day soon, they would build a home with each other here. She was sure of it.
Until then, she could be content with moonlit walks and Kaimana's company.
