Join me on a journey to Talia, an alternate universe 16th century Italy!
I will be hosting a readalong of Stravaganza: City of Masks by Mary Hoffman in January 2024, and I hope that you will join me in reading my favorite YA fantasy series from the early 2000s. This is the perfect time to either re-read the series or explore the world of Talia for the first time. The series has been translated to several languages so you can join even if you don't like to read in English.
You might like Stravaganza if you enjoy one or more of the following:
renaissance Italy/Venice
portal fantasy
complex family dynamics
hijinks
fast/medium paced story
political scheming
assassins and spies
teenagers (affectionate) being teenagers (derogatory)
fun (and a little bit dangerous) adventures
The readalong is hosted on the Storygraph (more info below) and it starts on January 1st and ends on February 4th. The book has been divided into five parts, and after each one we can have a discussion on it.
LINK TO THE READALONG
So come join me and spread the word. Please also reblog this post and make your own Stravaganza-propaganda to get people interested!
More information on the readalong under the cut.
How To: The Storygraph
The readalong is hosted using the Storygraph's new readalong-feature.
The Storygraph is an independently owned (so no Amazon!) Goodreads-alternative
Making an account is easy, and if you already have a Goodreads-account, you can import all your stats from there
You can use either the Storygraph-app or the website https://app.thestorygraph.com/
What to do before the readalong starts (December)?
If you don't already have one, make an account on Storygraph. There are plenty of tutorials on how to use it on YouTube, and I recommend getting familiar with the Storygraph before the readalong starts if you've never used it.
Join the readalong HERE. (There is more info on that page as well, including the different sections I've divided the book into and a recommended reading schedule.)
Find a copy of Stravaganza: City of Masks by Mary Hoffman. The edition/language doesn't matter. At least the e-book should be relatively easy to find depending on where you're from.
Introduce yourself on the readalong's forum.
Convince other people to join as well!
In January, start reading! When you reach the checkpoints on the readalong, add your comments on the forums you'll unlock.
If you need any help with the Storygraph, I'd be happy to help. (I'm not associated with them in any way, I just hate Amazon and want people to migrate from Goodreads to the Storygraph)
This readalong is only for the first book in the series, but if there's interest then we can definitely do the other five books as well.

i have a question regarding the nature of your collective memories and how this relates to your brother, Onyx: As we all know Shockwave killed an incarnation of him and supplanted his identity. But since he was, for all intents and purposes via paradox, Onyx prime, could Onyx access Shockwave's memories? And if so even his memories from before he took up the mantle of Onyx prime?
Dear Collective Consciousness,
You raise an interesting question, and one that I confess that I do not entirely know the answer to!
The Realm of the Primes is a nexus point; it is at once everywhere and nowhere, a microcosmic skybox on which the entire multiverse is reflected. Ever since the falling of the Shroud, for all our power, we of the Thirteen have been disparate individuals—but suffused in this space, we are able to see the perspectives of our countless parallel selves across realities.
Onyx, though… Onyx has always had a talent for seeing through others' eyes. The powers he was bestowed with at his creation have shaped his identity; could any of us remain truly the same if we possessed the ability to look into others' very souls? I find it very likely that his cosmic insight shapes how he perceives the multiverse, just as my own over time and space inform my own perspective. I would not be surprised to learn that Onyx's field of vision, as it were, is broader than mine.
This is, unfortunately, mere speculation. My brother is not one to often share his thoughts with his siblings—though I believe Shockwave's deceptions sat poorly with him.

Every time I see that shencomix strip that says 'when a character is secretly evil we almost always hate them' all I can think is lol skill issue. Who is we. That's the fastest way to make me Very Very Normal about a character

Am quite surprised that so far I've yet to see anyone defend Whisper because she's Totally Black and if you hate on her you're just a dirty little racist. Yet I know with certainty that somewhere out there that argument is been made already.
btw, (continuation of ask about Whisper), the reason the thought came to me was because I was reading about Disney's Wish, and a staggering amount of anti-criticism can (again cuz this happens with every movie at this rate) be summed up by 'you just don't like poc protagonists it's fine for you when whipeepl do it'. Considering how the Sonic fandom got a crazy amount of race-related arguments for a group of anthros who have no race in the first place and whose skin muzzle tones can be inconsistent (but where the dark skin tones, even in just one game (see Knuckles, Rouge) are taken that the character is tooooootally black guys srsly), I am surprised that for Whisper I have yet to see it.
Nah, what passes as Black-coded in the Sonic fandom is "they're voiced by a Black VA" (Sonic in the cartoons) or "they wear golden chains" (Vector). These are real arguments I've seen, btw :V
I am surprised though that I haven't seen any artist being harassed because they accidentally colored Whisper's muzzle a shade lighter than in canon. Progress? Or maybe artists have learned to be careful.
The only thing I have to say about this discourse, that already caused me grief in the past, is: poor Knuckles.
