it was an audiobook month <3 i did not have much time to read in outside of my commute (my new job has me exhausted) and, while on the move, audiobooks are just easier to get though. so yeah. i hope i'll manage to actually pick up physical books again this month.
2024 goal: 38/100 books
as alway, feel free to drop book recs, questions, or opinions in my inbox; i am always happy to talk to you about books!

Join me on a journey to Talia, an alternate universe 16th century Italy!
I will be hosting a readalong of Stravaganza: City of Masks by Mary Hoffman in January 2024, and I hope that you will join me in reading my favorite YA fantasy series from the early 2000s. This is the perfect time to either re-read the series or explore the world of Talia for the first time. The series has been translated to several languages so you can join even if you don't like to read in English.
You might like Stravaganza if you enjoy one or more of the following:
renaissance Italy/Venice
portal fantasy
complex family dynamics
hijinks
fast/medium paced story
political scheming
assassins and spies
teenagers (affectionate) being teenagers (derogatory)
fun (and a little bit dangerous) adventures
The readalong is hosted on the Storygraph (more info below) and it starts on January 1st and ends on February 4th. The book has been divided into five parts, and after each one we can have a discussion on it.
LINK TO THE READALONG
So come join me and spread the word. Please also reblog this post and make your own Stravaganza-propaganda to get people interested!
More information on the readalong under the cut.
How To: The Storygraph
The readalong is hosted using the Storygraph's new readalong-feature.
The Storygraph is an independently owned (so no Amazon!) Goodreads-alternative
Making an account is easy, and if you already have a Goodreads-account, you can import all your stats from there
You can use either the Storygraph-app or the website https://app.thestorygraph.com/
What to do before the readalong starts (December)?
If you don't already have one, make an account on Storygraph. There are plenty of tutorials on how to use it on YouTube, and I recommend getting familiar with the Storygraph before the readalong starts if you've never used it.
Join the readalong HERE. (There is more info on that page as well, including the different sections I've divided the book into and a recommended reading schedule.)
Find a copy of Stravaganza: City of Masks by Mary Hoffman. The edition/language doesn't matter. At least the e-book should be relatively easy to find depending on where you're from.
Introduce yourself on the readalong's forum.
Convince other people to join as well!
In January, start reading! When you reach the checkpoints on the readalong, add your comments on the forums you'll unlock.
If you need any help with the Storygraph, I'd be happy to help. (I'm not associated with them in any way, I just hate Amazon and want people to migrate from Goodreads to the Storygraph)
This readalong is only for the first book in the series, but if there's interest then we can definitely do the other five books as well.

So, if anyone is interested in an alternative to GoodReads that Amazon does not own and therefore can't use to inveigle their way deeper into your life for the purposes of bombarding you with yet more advertising, I recommend The StoryGraph. It's a fun site, has a companion app for iPhone and Android, and it's got a lot of fun tracking features that GoodReads doesn't have.

I think THE most fucked up book I've ever read was My Sweet Audrina. The whole time I read it, I was like shocked pikachu lol it never stopped surprising me with all the things that could be wrong with literally every character??? I almost didn't process the story or the themes because I was just like whaaaat is going on the whole time. So yesterday I bought it at a used bookstore for like $6 and it's got the fun window cover, and I'm gonna annotate it! I feel like it has a lot to teach me the second time around lol
Tumblr media
I'm super interested in annotating all of my favorite books, or books that stuck with me even for a bad reason, now that I've written a lot. At my core I'm a turbo nerd who loves to learn about literally anything, and I've always loved books and WISHED I could be a writer and now I like... can be?? so I'm taking it seriously -_- lol
I might make a storygraph for y'all to follow me on so you can see what I'm reading. you'll never catch me on goodreads alive again tho. (unless it's to keep an eye on my author page if i ever publish something haha)

So the Storygraph finally launched their readalong feature and I was thinking we could maybe do a collective (re)read of Stravaganza next year? It would also be a good opportunity to force convince all your friends and mutuals and bus drivers or whoever to read the books as well.
Lmk if you'd be even a little bit interested.

02-02-2023
Finished my last exam yesterday. It was a bit harder than I expected. I get my grades back next week so we'll see.
Now I have a week off but I really need to start working on my thesis, I barely did anything during the first semester and in march my internship starts.
Also I finished the January Pages challenge on the storygraph! I think it's a really good way to incorporate the daily habit of reading, even if it's only one page.

I finally made a Storygraph account! I'll still be using my Goodreads account (same name) since I have so many books on there, but now you can also find me here, so hit me up and we can swap book recs!
P.S. I also have a bookstagram in case anyone's wondering here 👀

All Out Book Review: 4.5 Stars!
Tumblr media
This was an amazing anthology of short stories. It had several Five Star reads including the opener, "Roja," a very interesting Trans retelling of Little Red Riding Hood by Anna-Marie McLemore that had me coming back to it several times before I even finished the rest of the book! The Queer authors of this anthology have created wonderful Queer stories filled with diverse characters who quickly pull you into their worlds. There were 2 stories that I was not super fond of, hence the drop from a full 5 star rating. Filled with absolute bangers of quotes, "All Out" will be an anthology I re-read time and time again. I will definitely be finding more works by these fantastic authors to read!
5 Star Stories and my favorite quotes from them
-Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore: A wonderful trans retelling of Little Red Riding Hood that takes place in war-torn 1870s Mexico. “He saw me as something soft, a girl he did not want to plague with nightmares.” “We survived to whisper our names to each other even if we could not yet confess them to anyone else.”
-Burnt Umber by Mackenzi Lee: Cute story of a teenage boy during the Golden Age of Dutch art, figuring out his sexuality and finding his first love. This one left me feeling giddy and warm, and excited about new love. “I wonder what his eyes would look like with our noses pressed together.” “Just as the snow stops, I take his hand.”
-The Dresser and the Chamber Maid by Robin Talley: I had this one at 4 stars initially but then I kept getting drawn back into it and re-reading because it was so good. Lesbians finding love while maneuvering the perils of aiding their royal employers? More please.  “It was an easy thing, then, to kiss her. As easy as laughter. Easy as a warm sun on a September afternoon.”
