Story 01: What’s Formula E? A basic rundown

The peak of electric vehicle performance

Formula E uses zero-emission electric race cars that are just as environmentally friendly as other electric vehicles, such as the Nissan LEAF. They’re also a lot quieter than vehicles with traditional engines, another big difference versus other motorsports. To take full advantage of these unique characteristics, races are held in easy-to-access major cities by blocking off sections to create street courses. Season five, Nissan’s first, kicked off Dec. 15 in Saudi Arabia. Additional races will be held in Morocco, Chile and Mexico before the series comes to Asia in March. The fifth and sixth races will be in Hong Kong and on the southern sea resort island of Sanya, China. This will be followed by races in Rome, Paris and Monaco. Finally, a double-header on July 13-14 in New York will decide the season five champion.

    Technological regulations

Holding races featuring pure electric vehicles was an entirely new experiment when Formula E began. It started as a one-make race, with all teams using the same engine. From season two, teams were allowed to use independently developed motors, inverters and transmissions, with each team working to develop their own lightweight, compact, energy-efficient powertrains. Restrictions apply to the structural unit, including the coil springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, and there are rules about what materials can be used, but the design of the rear suspension may be changed. Although all teams use the same chassis, the different strengths of each team has a large impact on performance.

The lithium-ion batteries used to supply electricity to the motors is currently the same for all vehicles. Until season four, the total electric power that could be used was 28 kilowatt-hours. This meant that the cars needed to be swapped midway through the approximately 90-kilometer races, and some felt this detracted from Formula E’s appeal. Starting with season five, the cars’ power has been roughly doubled, so that a single car can be used from the beginning to the end of each race. Regenerative brakes are also used to generate electricity, making brake usage an important factor in efficiently managing the power stored in the batteries.

The maximum output of the motors has been changed from 200 kilowatts (for free practice and elimination rounds only; limited to 180 kW for final races) to 250 kW (with the same rules as for 200 kW). This is expected to make races even more exciting. These changes mean that the cars used in Formula E have evolved to become second-generation vehicles. Known as “Gen 2” cars, they feature futuristic forms.

    Sporting regulations

The use of easy-to-access urban locations is just one of the ways that Formula E is attempting to appeal to as many fans as possible. Fans can also vote for their favorite drivers on social networks such as Twitter. The top three drivers with the most votes will be allowed to make use of their vehicle’s maximum output of 250 kW at the time of their choice on certain areas along the track. This feature, known as Fanboost, will become an extremely important tool for drivers on the narrow street courses used in Formula E, which have few locations that allow for overtaking,

Unlike regular racing events, which take place over the span of a weekend or a few days, Formula E’s free race, elimination rounds and final race all take place on the same day. The hope is that this will appeal to more regular fans by creating a condensed viewing experience. In addition, the podium for the award ceremony at the end of the race is located in a space that’s accessible to fans. This lets the fans get closer to their favorite drivers than in other motorsports.

Previously, the number of circuits was decided based on a distance of 80 to 90 km. From season five, all races have been changed to a time-based system, with each lasting 45 minutes plus one lap. The point system has also been changed, with drivers receiving points for their position. The driver who’s used the least amount of energy out of the top five will also receive extra points. This means that making efficient use of the limited energy available will become an even more important strategy.
