As a ’90’s Backstreet Boys girl, I just could not fathom why a perfectly good harmony needed the upheaval of a rap section?! Music Monday #233: Narsha - Game (feat. Verbal Jint) release: December 2023 genre: Kpop cw: flashing/strobing lights

And now for something completely the same - more Kpop! A brand new release (relatively speaking, it's nine days old now, but close enough) that takes me back to first Hallyu wave (and slightly earlier, since arguably first wave was '03 but first gen is now retcon'd back to the 90s) dance club hits, both in sound and visuals, especially YG artists like Taebin and Lexy.

So for those not familiar. Narsha first appeared on the Kpop scene as part of the girl group Brown Eyed Girls. In 2006. So yes, the fact that she's still actively making music in an industry that has a serious sexist ageism problem makes me unspeakably happy. And considering that I've been listening to Verbal Jint's productions since I discovered Kpop in the early 00s, I was pretty excited to see this collaboration pop up in the release schedule. Better still, it did not disappoint. The sound has upgraded for the current era, but "Game" still very much feels like something I'd hear in a club in the early 00s with a fairly simple bass beat and Narsha's smooth vocals. Verbal Jint only contributes the one rap verse towards the beginning, but that songwriting is definitely him. Simply put, this is an earworm, especially that chorus.

The video spends the bulk of its runtime on Narsha as she sings her way through a variety of photoshoot sets in a trimmed down production that further reminds of an earlier era. Her singing scenes are intercut with a couple of more dynamic scenes - Narsha standing still in a moving crowd, Verbal Jint dancing on a couple sets, and the two of them in a car together as if on a date. The costuming, Verbal Jint's dance style, and the use of a soft filter on the date scene all combine to further the nostalgic feel, with only the aspect ratio to really betray that this was produced with modern screens in mind.

After a ten year break from solo activities, "Game" marks Narsha's second single of the year. Both "Game" and "Blush," along with her previous works both solo and as part of Brown Eyed Girls, are available now wherever you prefer to do your Kpop streaming.
