Princess Alice of Hesse and her daughter Victoria, 1863
Princess Alice VA CI (Alice Maud Mary; 25 April 1843 – 14 December 1878) was Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine from 13 June 1877 until her death in 1878 as the wife of Grand Duke Louis IV.
She was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Alice was the first of Queen Victoria's nine children to die, and one of three to predecease their mother, who died in 1901.
Her life had been enwrapped in tragedy since her father's death in 1861.
Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven VA (born Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine; 5 April 1863 – 24 September 1950) was the eldest daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

“I was surprised to find out how many connections the Vanderbilt family had to royalty. Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt apparently had a lesbian relationship with Nadejda Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven and was engaged to Gottfried, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, a great-grandson of Queen Victoria and of Tsar Alexander II. Her sister Thelma Furness, Viscountess Furness was the mistress of Edward VIII and was the person to introduce him to Wallis Simpson. Grace Vanderbilt was the guardian of Lady Pamela Hicks when she was shipped off to New York and the Mounbattens became very close to family. Consuelo Vanderbilt was proposed to by Prince Francis Joseph of Battenberg (who was the brother of Prince Henry Battenberg, who married Princess Beatrice, a daughter of Queen Victoria) but she turned him down. No wonder Prince Harry did an interview with Anderson Cooper 😅. I’m sure there’s many more connections but I just find that all so fascinating.” - Submitted by Anonymous

"I might here mention certain fixed rules for our life, which my mother had adopted from those used in her youth. We rose early. When I was about 13, I remember my sister Ella and I getting up in winter by candlelight and starting lessons at 7 We breakfasted with our parents at 9 o'clock, and had an hour's exercise out of doors, after which we had what we called "little lunch" consisting of milk, fruit and biscuits at 11, and at 2 o'clock we lunched with our parents. I would mention here that my mother adhered to the diet Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort had instituted for their children. We were never given spiced or rich food, simple dishes being served up for us. We never objected to anything given us at home, but the awful bread and butter puddings without a raisin in them or the stodgy tapioca pudding full of lumps we got in Queen Victoria's houses I still remember with a shudder of disgust. On the rarest of occasions were we given a sweet or a bonbon, but we were always allowed a lump of sugar if we wanted something sweet, and so to this simple fare I attribute my excellent digestion in after life. After lunch we again went out for 1½ hours in all weathers and had schoolroom tea at 5 This over, we went down to my mother's room where we played about with the younger children. We went to bed at 6.30, later on at 7 when preparations took more time".

Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and By Rhine, surrounded by his sisters
Ernest was always given a lot of support by his sisters, probably because of the trauma he underwent when his little brother Frittie died while playing with him and because of the death of his mother, who, as per the sources, caught diphtheria after giving him a kiss to console him for the death of his sister May of the same disease. Later on, he lost his little daughter Elizabeth which must have been devastating for him. But he had the love and support of his sisters, and Nicholas II seems to have also been very fond of him. As we know, there were further losses down the road. His beautiful sisters Grand Duchess Elizabeth (wearing her nun's habit in the photo) and Empress Alexandra, were murdered by the Bolsheviks.
Ernie might have been born into a life of privilege and riches, but the extent of the tragedy he experienced in his life is unimaginable.
In addition to Elizabeth and Alexandra, his sisters Irene (Princess Heinrich) and Victoria appear in the photograph.
And since all Romanov roads lead to Prince Phillip, please note that Victoria Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven, born Victoria of Hesse, and By Rhine (older sister of Empress Alexandra) was Prince Phillip's maternal grandmother. So he had Hessian blood as well.

The Queen Consort wore a very important royal heirloom brooch for the service. This is the Hesse Diamond Jubilee Brooch, a gift presented to Queen Victoria in 1897. The diamond and sapphire jewel was a present from eight of Victoria’s grandchildren and their spouses: Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra of Russia, Grand Duke Ernest Louis and Grand Duchess Victoria Melita of Hesse, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia, and Prince and Princess Louis of Battenberg (later Marquess and Marchioness of Milford Haven). All were members of the family of Victoria’s late daughter, Princess Alice. The main diamond portion of the brooch forms a heart shape, and inside the heart is the number 60 (the number of years in a Diamond Jubilee reign) in Cyrillic numerals.
