Truth
An old friend of mine has retreated into social isolation, which I could have taken personally. But we've been through a lot together in our lives and I refuse to take anything he does personally. Have to give grace if you want to get it.
He said he wants to get away from the self so influenced by other people and find his center. I think that's a great idea. I'd like to do it myself, but it's a scary thought; even when I'm alone, I'm not truly alone. I reach out to people, I meet new people in virtual spaces, I write stories with others, and always look for social stimulation.
How much of me is 'me'? But, is 'me' something worth defining?
Because for a long time, I've seen myself as a hollow shell battered around by the world, filled up with its energies, emptied, charged up, wrung out, and again and again. I don't like to see myself, because myself is a dragon, a towering egomaniac, a striving and suffering lunatic who hurts herself with the intensity of her ambitions.
The only thing chasing ambition has ever gotten me is pain; I slam into walls and doors, and the faster I'm running, the harder the impact. The smarter I'm being, the further into trouble I get.
My forays into the jungle of American civilization are never productive. They start out hopeful, then end in mutual misery.
You know, I was driving through San Francisco at night last week. I saw billboards advertising not just AI, but digital solutions for AI-generated-image-detection services. Anti-AI. In a sea of lights and concrete, I saw a targeted advertisement as I sat in rush-hour traffic, telling me that I could literally 'find truth' with a product.
And earlier that day, I'd been walking through Yosemite, where the ravens flew by the dozens like bands of kings, with their hooked beaks and proud eyes, their manes of spiky feathers on their chest -- they looked at me and I looked at them. We saw each other, and there was truth there.
And the people who call themselves 'realists' will tell me of the meaninglessness of that experience, that the creature is somehow beneath me, and my deranged mind is deriving meaning from nothing.
Or, if my interpretation of the raven's symbol pleases their vanity, they will feed me scraps and lift me up like a treasured Bug a la some Jack London-esque short story and make me their favorite poet-propagandist. I'll be their truth maker.
And I woke up this morning with the insulin catheter in my abdomen ripped free, something that's never happened before. It was 4 AM. I replaced it without making too much noise and went to write a poem about wanting to sleep that made me cry -- a poem I wish I could share here, but it's going into a collection I intend to publish and therefore in order to sell the rights to print it exclusively it cannot appear in other media.
Well, after writing that poem, and crying, I went back to bed and held my wife. We slept in each other's arms and that's the truth.
Then we were woken up by a call from an unemployment benefits adjudicator who asked very pointed questions about why I left my previous job, opened up old wounds around confusion, anxiety, discrimination, being targeted by malicious parents, and feeling unprotected by admin or HR.
I told my story (again). I told the truth. They, who agreed not to 'contest' unemployment benefits (I suppose that means not filing an appeal for the approval decision) will also tell their truth. But they did not tell me the whole truth when I made the agreement to resign in grace rather than work somewhere I was made to feel so unwelcome. They kept many truths to themselves.
So what is the truth. The truth is that more and more I feel like a gasping animal caught in a net of buzzing light that Just
Won't
Stop
My truth, the thing I know inside me so true and deep, is that when I die, I will hear the sound of wind in trees. It will get louder and louder, until it overtakes me. It will transport me. It is the holiest sound I know. It sounds like the sea. It sounds like the hushings of a loving Universe.
It sounds like the Moon waking me with her light, to kiss me on the brow, and guide me back to sleep, to let me know I am safe and small. Truth.

A high-level human resources employee at the City of Markham has been placed on leave after she said and displayed the N-word while giving a guest lecture to students at George Brown College.
Janet Ashfield, Markham's deputy director of people services, spoke to more than 100 students in the college's human resources management program on Wednesday, according to a video recording of the virtual class viewed by CBC Toronto.
As part of her presentation, Ashfield presented a real-world case study about two firefighters who lost their jobs after posting offensive content on social media. She asked the students how they would have handled the situation if they were the arbitrator in the case.
While outlining the scenario, Ashfield said the N-word out loud as she quoted one of the firefighter's social media posts. The video shows her presentation slides also spelled out the word in full. [...]

13 years ago I was hired to work a retail job where I had both interviews in the same day (one middle manager and one upper management in HR) and signed a contract that same day. My first day was orientation the next week. Now I’ve just accepted a different position in retail after not working for a year and a half after university (because I literally can’t get hired anywhere in my field that doesn’t pay fully on commission or isn’t glorified telemarketing), and I had one interview one week, another the week after, and am now waiting a who-the-fuck-knows amount of time while the company performs a criminal background and credit report check on me. Meanwhile I have bills to pay and my borrowing power is dwindling. What the fuck is going on anymore?
I don't even know. The background check and other hiring practices are so out of control now, it's nuts. (The fuck they need a credit check for? These places aren't loaning employees money — they're paying us to do a job! Why check unless they're trying to see either how desperate you are or whether there's some arbitrary reason they can cite for not hiring you if they don't like you?)
I'm so sorry you're dealing with the background check delays. It's been going around for sure.
I started a cafe management job last month (temporarily — I already know I'm stepping down come fall, if I don't ragequit before then), and while my background check cleared relatively quickly, that's apparently a rare thing now.
The HR rep hired a recent high school grad who grew up in the area. She got good grades, was never in trouble, and is going to a good college in the fall — her first time even leaving the state (she did a virtual visit).
Her background check took three weeks to clear. The fuck.
When I worked in data science pre-covid, I expected an extensive hiring process. It was not an entry-level position, the job posting itself warned there would be a skills test during the hiring process, and while it was annoying to interview with 13 different people, it made sense for the position given the number of teams I'd be working with. The whole process, from first interview to signing the contract, took two weeks.
Now we've got companies stringing out people over multiple interviews, sometimes for over a month, to get a basic retail/food service/entry-level no-experience-necessary job. And then the waits for background/credit checks. It's insane. I swear they're just trying to see how much abuse people will put up with/strain people's finances so they'll accept even shit wages without complaint. :/

sorry if this is weird but as someone who hates their hometown and wants to leave it's very inspiring to see your posts about hating south carolina/wanting to get back to la...gives me hope that one day i will also escape lol. anyway hope you're doing well i'm rooting for you from afar
thank you! not weird at all don’t worry! and you WILL escape one day i believe in you!
also i know you didn’t ask but number one piece of advice i can give for Getting The Hell Out is once you do Get The Hell Out do NOT compromise about where you live. if there is virtually nothing you like about an apartment do NOT move in there! you will NOT magically start liking it at a later date! and it’s one thing if you hate where you work because you don’t live at your job but if you hate where you live too? you’re pretty much screwed because that’s what you have to go home to every night. that’s the main thing i did wrong because i was kind of in a beggars can’t be choosers type situation(no credit score, no rental history, no current income and my last job in sc had paid me like $4 below what LA’s minimum wage was at the time) and i didn’t want to keep airbnb hopping, i wanted to start my life in la NOW so i moved into the first place that would take me and that place was an old ugly dirty tiny shithole studio with no oven and a one-legged florida man landlord named dave who still had a “stop the obama agenda” sticker from 2010 on his wall and it cost $1,425 a month. SAD!
and then the other big thing i did wrong was, because tipped workers in LA make the same minimum wage as non-tipped workers, i applied for retail jobs instead of serving jobs. and obviously it depends on where you’re trying to go because that’s kind of an LA-specific thing and if you move somewhere where tipped workers make $2.13 an hour it obviously does not matter nearly as much. but i could have been making waaaaaay more money that whole time had i not gotten so caught up in the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of World’s Worst Target.
but yeah. live and learn! and the great thing about the way it worked out for me(getting so fed up with that apartment that i decided to go back to my hometown temporarily instead of staying there for potentially 6+ more months while i found a new job and accumulated the 3 months of paystubs i’d need to move to another place) is i still have all the money i had managed to save up while working at target. which is enough that i can literally move back at any time. and i have a temporary “job” that i’m doing right now that will probably last until mid-september (it’s a process that i’d estimate is about 65% done currently) which coincidentally happens to be the “ideal” time to look for a job according to some guy buzzfeed wrote an article about who’s worked in hr for like 20 years. so probably september/october i’ll start doing some WFH customer service job and between january and march i’ll have been at that job long enough to have 3 months of paystubs and will therefore be able to move back to LA & into a non-shithole apartment. so ultimately at the end of the day i do believe it’ll all work out for me. And also that, as a wise episode of 30 rock once said, sometimes the way back up is down

Virtual HR Services
The continuation of remote work seems a lasting reality post COVID. It makes it imperative for startups and small businesses to manage their virtual meetings and HR system, effectively. The large scale industries can also get HR responsibilities off-plate by collaborating with renowned Virtual HR Services providers. The adoption of the virtual HR Services signifies a paradigm shift in how today’s organisations manage their Human Resources.

ok volunteering at the food bank was great! I want to make a habit of doing that although I think I may have to find one closer to home if I want to go weekly (it took me 45 min to drive there and 1 hr 10 min to drive home). but I am going to help them with grant writing and edit some of their donor communications material which can all be done virtually and then maybe I can commit to one shift a month there. as usual with stuff like that I had a ton of inertia/didn’t want to go right up until the second I walked in and then I was just happy to be there and enjoyed the experience. they have a lot of cool ideas too for developing other programming—like some weeks they’ll get a huge shipment of some random produce item and they want to create little digital booklets of recipes that use that ingredient and are drawn from across the national cuisines of their core clientele. plus they have lots of ideas for language access stuff and building in connections to other social services so people can access different resources while visiting the bank. I love the little team that runs it they are super dynamic and clearly just work SO hard to keep things afloat. anyway I think if I go once a month and then do more regular weekend work virtually that will be a nice commitment to have.
mmkay. I’m TIRED despite not really extending myself all that much today. tomorrow is a loooong day but I think/hope it will go fast because lots of in-person meetings. here we go:
6:30-7:45 coffee, emails
7:45-9 shower/get ready, work on bio, finish tabulating scores
9-10:15 advisory board mtg
10:15-11 drive to campus and maybe pick up something to take for lunch on the way or just bring a bunch of random snacks. ALSO CALL VET ON THE WAY IN AND SEE IF I CAN DROP PIP OFF LATER OR ON FRIDAY
11-12 PSE mtg
12-1 CB mtg
1-1:30 KA mtg
1:30-2 partner mtg
2-4 work session—recover from meetings, catch up on email, finish this blog post jes you HAVE to stop dragging your feet
4-5:30 student scholars event
5:30-6:15 listen to game on the way home
make some kind of dinner sigh it never ends does it you’re always having to feed yourself!
