Announcing the Picks and Shovels book tour
Tumblr media
This week only, Barnes and Noble is offering 25% off pre-orders of my forthcoming novel Picks and Shovels.
Tumblr media
My next novel, Picks and Shovels, is officially out in the US and Canada on Feb 17, and I'm about to leave on a 20+ city book-tour, which means there's a nonzero chance I'll be in a city near you between now and the end of the spring!
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865908/picksandshovels
Picks and Shovels is a standalone novel starring Martin Hench – my hard-charging, two-fisted, high-tech forensic accountant – in his very first adventure, in the early 1980s. It's a story about the Weird PC era, when no one was really certain what shape PCs should be, who should make them, who should buy them, and what they're for. It features a commercial war between two very different PC companies.
The first one, Fidelity Computing, is a predatory multi-level marketing faith scam, run by a Mormon bishop, a Catholic priest, and an orthodox rabbi. Fidelity recruits people to exploit members of their faith communities by selling them third-rate PCs that are designed as rip-off lock-ins, forcing you to buy special floppies for their drives, special paper for their printers, and to use software that is incompatible with everything else in the world.
The second PC company is Computing Freedom, a rebel alliance of three former Fidelity Computing sales-managers: an orthodox woman who's been rejected by her family after coming out as queer; a Mormon woman who's rejected the Church over its opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, and a nun who's quit her order to join the Liberation Theology movement in the struggle for human rights in America's dirty wars.
In the middle of it all is Martin Hench, coming of age in San Francisco during the PC bubble, going to Dead Kennedys shows, getting radicalized by ACT UP!, and falling in love – all while serving as CFO and consigliere to Computing Freedom, as a trade war turns into a shooting war, and they have to flee for their lives.
The book's had fantastic early reviews, with endorsements from computer historians like Steven Levy (Hackers), Claire Evans (Broad-Band), John Markoff (What the Doormouse Said) and Dan'l Lewin (CEO of the Computer History Museum). Stephen Fry raved that he "hugely enjoyed" the "note perfect," "superb" story.
And I'm about to leave on tour! I have nineteen confirmed dates, and two nearly confirmed dates, and there's more to come! I hope you'll consider joining me at one of these events. I've got a bunch of fantastic conversation partners joining me onstage and online, and the bookstores that are hosting me are some of my favorite indie booksellers in the world.

My submission for the meatychan contest! The first image is the original and the second is desaturated and a but more contrasted! I didnt have enough time to render properly, me and the gaussian blur tool where fighting hand in hand till the contest deadline wheewww!
lots of text below!
original text from my instagram story:
Meaty Chan is a UTAU and recently I found out there was a design competition for her, so I decided to enter!
I didnt have as much time, but I think I truly put my all into it with the time I did have.
Utau is a virtual singing software that is free and accesible to artists and its different from Vocaloid due it to being "Manual" - someone can input their own/anyone elses voice manually into the software, creating a voicebank! Like Vocaloid, its tradition to give your Voicebank a design and maybe some backstory and special items! I love both official vocaloid voicebanks and utau - I would especially say Utau since it is more accesible and I love seeing the different voicebanks and designs!
For her design, I wanted to give her a more flamboyant look, and up her outfit almost if she was a super star and a debut tour or something XD I was really inspired by monster high designs and some small aspects of lolita and gyaryu fashion that made me make small choice in her designs
It makes me very excited to create something like this - I am really trying to push myself to create more work regarding my interests - Vocaloid and anything Vocaloid related has been a huge interest for me (since 2010/2011 XD) So im super happy that I can only create work but also participate in the community that frankly I have been too shy and hesitant to contribute to . I want to be more open RAAHHHHG (also if you want any reccs… im right here)

Want to start music as a career?🤔
Absolutely you can pursue a career in music, and there are numerous paths to gainful employment once you've honed your skills. Music, like any art form, offers a wide range of opportunities across different sectors, from performance to education, production, composition, and more. The key is to identify the area of music that most excites you and to build a skill set that aligns with it. Here are a few potential career avenues:  Performance: You could perform as a solo artist, in a band, orchestra, or ensemble, whether in live settings, recording studios, or on tour. This could include classical, jazz, pop, or any genre that resonates with you.  Music Education: Teaching music at various levels (from private lessons to school or university settings) is a stable and rewarding career. Many music teachers also supplement their income through performances or private tutoring.  Music Production and Sound Engineering: Working behind the scenes, you could produce music, mix and master tracks, or work in sound engineering for film, television, or live events. The digital age has opened up even more opportunities in music production, where many people work remotely or as freelancers.  Composition and Songwriting: If you have a flair for creating original music, composing for films, video games, commercials, or even writing songs for other artists is a viable career. Composers often have multiple income streams from licensing and royalties.  Music Therapy: This is an emerging field where you can use music to support mental health, rehabilitation, and emotional well-being. It’s a rewarding way to blend music with a desire to help others.  Music Business and Management: If you're interested in the industry side, you could manage artists, work in music marketing, music publishing, or help run record labels or music venues.
 Session Musician or Producer: Many musicians find work as session artists, contributing to recording projects for other musicians or film soundtracks.  Music Technology: With the rise of music software and apps, there are growing opportunities in developing new tools for musicians, working in audio programming, or creating virtual instruments. While a career in music may not always follow a traditional 9-to-5 path, it can definitely be financially sustainable and creatively fulfilling. Success often comes with dedication, networking, a strong portfolio, and an entrepreneurial mindset. The music industry is diverse, and many musicians build hybrid careers—performing, teaching, composing, and producing at the same time. In short, yes, you can absolutely make a living in music, but it often requires passion, persistence, and versatility. You may also note that music not only provides financial stability but also provides peace of mind and comfort that is the most important requirement in one’s life.

Oh! Fun (not really) HC I've been thinking about for a little bit: the main reason the animatronics attack people when in virus mode isn't just because they're being partially controlled by Vanny/Afton's influence, but because they physically cannot recognize anyone or anything around them.
Their eyesight is (literally) AI-generated.
A bit more of an in-depth explanation below the cut:
So, how I see it, the animatronics don't have actual eyesight (obviously). What they do have is an approximate map of where everything is in the Pizzaplex programmed into their eyes to simulate what it's like walking around the space. Like a virtual housing tour meets Google Maps, only much smoother and more accurate. (The V.A.N.N.Y. layout is also programmed in, and is how Roxanne can see through walls/how the animatronics can still react to things seen "out of barriers").
When the virus kicks in, everything sort of becomes...fuzzy and unrecognizable. Like this image:
Tumblr media
There's a part of them that knows they should be able to recognize the places around them, but for some reason, they just can't.
And it's the same for faces. Their facial recognition software cannot identify whoever they're looking at because the person's facial structure is always constantly morphing and shifting (7:15 in the video below for a good example of what I mean):
youtube
Pre-DLC, this could be why previous human employees are being killed/harmed, because at some point or another the virus wipes the robot's ability to recognize who is approaching them, and their system deems them a threat. (I imagine it's particularly bad for Monty.) It also explains why none of them seem to notice or care about Vanny's presence in the 'Plex, because the virus is messing with their ability to see what is and isn't beyond the "barriers" in their system-generated eyesight. (Why can Gregory see her? I have no idea! Don't think about it too hard.)
Post-DLC, it kind of explains why Sun thinks Cassie is a mechanic at first, because his system can only recognize the V.A.N.N.Y. mask, but once she takes it off, Eclipse is only vaguely aware that she is a child who is somewhere she shouldn't be, without being able to seemingly recognize what a horrible state they or the Daycare is actually in (He just needs to clean up, right? And then the kids will be back soon!). It could also be why Roxanne mistook Cassie as Gregory at first.
It's why the animatronics have trouble recognizing their surroundings, getting around the Pizzaplex, or even realizing what sort of state it/they are currently in. They're just stuck in an endless void of constantly shifting colors, moving shapes, and distorted faces.

Real Art/"Real" Art/ Real "Art"/Unreal Art/merchandising/marketing. Colection of Notes.
"A software system developed by Peter Jackson and his team, used throughout the production of the documentary series Get Back, finally opened the way for the uncoupling of John’s vocal from his piano part. As a result, the original recording could be brought to life and worked on anew with contributions from all four Beatles." — Description of the official video for "Now and Then" on The Beatles' official YouTube channel. “Our fine arts were developed, their types and uses were established, in times very different from the present, by men whose power of action upon things was insignificant in comparison with ours. But the amazing growth of our techniques, the adaptability and precision they have attained, the ideas and habits they are creating, make it a certainty that profound changes are impending in the ancient craft of the Beautiful. In all the arts there is a physical component which can no longer be considered or treated as it used to be, which cannot remain unaffected by our modern knowledge and power. For the last twenty years neither matter nor space nor time has been what it was from time immemorial. We must expect great innovations to transform the entire technique of the arts, thereby affecting artistic invention itself and perhaps even bringing about an amazing change in our very notion of art.” — Paul Valéry, PIÈCES SUR L’ART
(...) there may be more to come, according to Jackson. He told the Sunday Times newspaper he has footage from Get Back, in which one or other of the Beatles riffs on a musical idea in the studio. He said: “We can take a performance from Get Back, separate John and George, and then have Paul and Ringo add a chorus or harmonies. You might end up with a decent song but I haven’t had conversations with Paul about that. It’s fanboy stuff, but certainly conceivable.” —Peter Jackson Reveals More Beatles Music “Is Conceivable” After Release Of ‘Final’ Song By Fab Four. Deadline.com.
"During long periods of history, the mode of human sense perception changes with humanity’s entire mode of existence. The manner in which human sense perception is organized, the medium in which it is accomplished, is determined not only by nature but by historical circumstances as well." —Walter Benjamin, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, Thesis 3.
Tumblr media
A hologram of Ronnie James Dio will embark on a world tour, called Dio Returns," with live musicians from Dio Disciples.—Ronnie James Dio Hologram Set For World Tour, billboard.com "In the case of films, mechanical reproduction is not, as with literature and painting, an external condition for mass distribution. Mechanical reproduction is inherent in the very technique of film production. This technique not only permits in the most direct way but virtually causes mass distribution." —Walter Benjamin, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.
"In Ruiz’ poetics, impressively hermetic but also endearingly ludic, he shows that the Hollywood doctrine, that narrative must be built around a central conflict, is nonsense. He discusses different kinds of Utopia – “images of nowhere”; how a thing can be true even though it isn’t real; declares that, even though we have explored space we have still to explore time; “films are like human beings: you look at them and they look back at you”; the unconscious secrets of photographic and video images… He advocates a Shamanic cinema that voyages to different worlds, that accounts for all varieties of experience and can preserve the mystery of the world and its hidden details, a vertiginous sense of mutating images…" —James Norton, The Mystery, as Always: Raúl Ruiz, Klimt and the Poetics of Cinema.
The spectacle cannot be understood as the abuse of a world of vision, as the prod uct of the techniques of mass d issem ination of i mages. It is, rather, a Weltanschauung which has become actual, materially translated . It is a vision of the world which has become objectified. (...) The spectacle, understood in its totality, is simultaneously the result and the project of the existing mode of prod uction. It is not a su pplement to the real world, its added d ecoration. It is the heart of the unrealism of the real society. In all its specific forms, as information or propaganda, advertisement or direct consum ption of enterta inments, the spectacle is the present model of socially dominant life. It is the omnipresent affi rmation of the cho ice already made in prod uction and its corollary consumption. The form a nd the content of the spectacle are identically the total justification of the cond it ions and the ends of the existing system. The spectacle is also the permanent presence of this justification, to the extent that it occu pies the principal part of the time lived outside of modern production. — Guy Debord, The society of the spectacle "Hence I was preoccupied by a potentiality untypical in normal film construction and film composition. Operating at the outset with such material and such occurrences, it was natural to speculate principally upon the potentialities of juxtaposition. Less attention was given to an analysis of the actual nature of the pieces juxtaposed. Such attention would not have been sufficient in itself. History has proven that such attention, directed solely to the content of single shots, led in practice to a decline of montage to a level of "special effects," "montage sequences," etc., with all the consequences this involved. What should have been the proper emphasis, what should have received the principal attention, in order that neither element would be unduly exaggerated? It was necessary to turn to that fundamental basis which equally determines both the content enclosed by. single frames and the compositional juxtaposition of these separate contents with each other, i.e., to the content of the whole, of the general and unifying needs." — Sergei Eisenstein , The Film Sense.

How Independent Artists Can Succeed Without a Label Deal?
Tumblr media
In the music industry, the traditional path to success often involved securing a record deal with a major label. However, the landscape has significantly changed, and today, independent artists have more opportunities than ever to succeed without the backing of a record label. Here are several strategies that independent artists can utilize to build their careers and achieve success on their own terms.
Leverage Digital PlatformsStreaming ServicesPlatforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music have revolutionized the way music is consumed. Independent artists can distribute their music directly to these services through distributors like TuneCore, DistroKid, and CD Baby. By getting their music onto these platforms, artists can reach a global audience and generate revenue from streams. Social MediaSocial media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook allow artists to connect with fans directly. By regularly posting content, engaging with followers, and using targeted ads, artists can build a loyal fanbase. Viral challenges and trends, especially on TikTok, can propel a song to widespread recognition overnight. YouTubeYouTube remains a powerful tool for musicians. By creating music videos, lyric videos, and behind-the-scenes content, artists can attract and retain fans. Monetizing videos through ads and partnering with other creators can also provide additional income streams.
Build a Strong BrandUnique IdentityDeveloping a unique identity and brand is crucial. This includes everything from the artist & visual aesthetic and logo to their personal story and message. A strong brand helps artists stand out in a crowded market and makes them more memorable to listeners. Consistent ContentConsistency in content creation and release schedules helps maintain audience interest. Regularly releasing new music, videos, and engaging content keeps fans excited and invested in the artist’s journey.
Utilize Crowdfunding and Fan SupportCrowdfunding PlatformsPlatforms like Kickstarter, Patreon, and GoFundMe allow artists to raise funds directly from their fans. Crowdfunding can be used to finance albums, tours, music videos, and other projects. In return, artists can offer exclusive content, merchandise, or experiences. Fan EngagementBuilding a strong connection with fans is key. Engaging with fans through social media, live streams, and meet-and-greets helps create a loyal community. Fans who feel personally connected to an artist are more likely to support them financially and spread the word about their music.
Live Performances and TouringLocal GigsStarting with local gigs and gradually expanding to larger venues helps artists build a live performance reputation. Performing live not only generates income but also strengthens the bond with fans. Virtual ConcertsVirtual concerts and live-streamed performances have become increasingly popular. Platforms like Twitch and YouTube Live enable artists to perform for a global audience from the comfort of their home. Virtual concerts can be monetized through ticket sales, donations, and sponsorships.
Collaboration and NetworkingCollaborate with Other ArtistsCollaborating with other independent artists or influencers can help expand an artist’s reach. Collaborations introduce artists to new audiences and can result in creative synergies that enhance the music. Industry NetworkingBuilding relationships within the industry is important. Attending music conferences, workshops, and networking events can open doors to new opportunities, including collaborations, performances, and media coverage.
Smart Business ManagementFinancial PlanningIndependent artists need to manage their finances wisely. This includes budgeting for production costs, marketing, touring, and other expenses. Using financial tools and software can help keep track of income and expenses. Rights ManagementUnderstanding and managing music rights is crucial. This includes registering music with performance rights organizations (PROs) like ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC to ensure that royalties are collected whenever their music is played publicly.
Conclusion Succeeding as an independent artist requires a combination of creativity, business acumen, and strategic planning. By leveraging digital platforms, building a strong brand, engaging with fans, performing live, collaborating with others, and managing finances effectively, independent artists can carve out a successful career on their own terms. The music industry is evolving, and with the right approach, independent artists have the power to thrive without the need for a traditional record label deal.

Octa shook her head as she sat up. Well, she didn't think it was possible to even go unconscious in a virtual reality world, but here she was.
"Ohmycod!! Eight!!" Pearl exclaimed, zooming toward her. Pixels appeared around her, and she transformed from her drone body to her regular inkling body in a flash. "You alright? Your head hurting? Lemme check your eyes, kiddo!"
"I-I am alright, Pearl. Thank you." She put her hand outward to let the inkling know, pushing herself to her feet. "I am used to the bigger sort of falls. The two kids- they are alright?"
"Yeah, thanks to you. You broke their fall. Even though were in a virtual reality, seems that you can still feel pain. Annoying, if ya ask me."
"Oh! And Marina?"
"I've been waiting for you to wake up actually, Octa. I feel I have some explaining to do." Marina walked up to the two of them, the two agents in tow.
"Explaining...oh yes! Where are we, Marina?"
"We're inside a virtual reality known as the Memverse; it's a program that I designed for people, specifically those who have been sanitized, to regain their memories and sense of self." She explained, typing away at her laptop. "In fact, you should already be somewhat familiar. I had you playtest the beta version a few months ago while we were on the world tour."
"Hold up- so Octa knows about this place?" Mirage asked incredulously. "And she didn't say anything??"
"To be fair, the beta model of this place looked EXTREMELY different from now. I barely had the levels themselves modeled out. I bet she barely remembers me making her play through them."
"Yes...it all makes sense. I knew that the elevator felt familiar. You said that you wanted it to be like slowly rediscovering yourself, one step at a time." She nodded along.
"Yes...anyway, it was all fine, until it wasn't. There was a weak point in the main component of my system...one that I named Order. It went completely against my coding! Worse yet, someone found the insecurity and hacked into the Memverse and is changing it up! It's all going wrong..."
"Don't worry, 'Rina! We just gotta take out this hacker and fix the problem with the Order system right? You can just use your laptop and fix it!"
"I wish it was that simple Pearlie. You see...I may have borrowed the outline of the TARTAR program to make the Memverse. Permission from the human professor and Kama, of course. And uh...so you know those Sea Cucumber phones that have gotten crazy popular the last few years? Apparently, THOSE also used the outline of the TARTAR program, and...well, to not overcomplicate things, I may have accidentally gotten everyone that owns one of them sucked into the Memverse?"
Dead silence.
"How careless!!!" Minu exclaimed.
"I'm sorry! I had no idea the phones had the same coding! I meant to report it initially, but I got so caught up...ooh, I feel awful..."
"Nevermind. It doesn't matter now. Can't you just hard reboot the system?"
"That's the problem. You see, everyone has to be logged out before I can do that, but...there's THOUSANDS of people's consciousness logged into the Memverse. Dragged in against their will, unable to leave. If I were to do a hard system reboot, with all of us in here, it would sever the connection between our real world bodies and digital ones. In other words- we'd be stuck here forever. Goners."
"AAAAAGH! WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A SYSTEM THIS TERRIFYING?!?!?!" Minu exclaimed. "Then how are we supposed to get out?! Stop Tara?! Not die?!?!?"
"I do have one option for us: we stop the hack and malfunctioning software internally. We have to go to the control room. And the control room is-" Marina pointed to the top of the Spire of Order, which was now greatly expanded into the sky. "All the way at the top."
"So you are saying in order to save everyone's minds and stop Tara and Order, we must climb to the top of the tower?"
"Complete the game, yes. It's the only way! And you know what's in there already- it's a hefty task ahead of us."
"Nothing me and Eight can't pull off though! I can help her get to the top, no prob!"
"Pearlie, you're so amazing...!"
"Can we help too, or are we just sitting ducks?" Mirage asked in an annoyed tone.
"Oh, yes! Those lockers over there- they contain weapon palletes. I had downloaded weapon preference data from various people that I watched and heard from. If you look in there, you might find weapons suited to your style."
"Right."
The group head over to the lockers to check them out. "Sweet, a Tri-Stringer. Perfect." Mirage spun the bow around in their hands.
"Oh, that's Shiver's pallete!"
"Didn't realize Shiver used a bow..."
"You don't happen to have a spare pair of Dualies in here, do you?" Minu asked, looking through the lockers.
"I'm afraid not, little one."
"Here. You may use these ones." Octa handed the Dualies to the Inktoling girl. "I shall use this Splattershot."
"Oh, that's Agent 4's pallete! Good choice!"
"Oh, Theo..." Octa whined. "I hope we find him soon."
"Ah, right...Agent 4 is also stuck in here somewhere, isn't he?" Marina sighed. "What a mess this all is...I'm so sorry again..."
"Don't beat yourself up, Reens! It's all that Tara lady's fault!" Pearl winked.
"Oh! I do have something that might help!" Marina flipped her laptop open. "I may not be able to do a hard system reboot, but I can hack into the hacked system a little bit! If you ever need extra lives, extra damage protection or armor, more Pearl Drone upgrades, more rewards and cheaper vending machine prices- I can do all of that! I just need Prlz to power them- you should've gotten some on that last run through you did to save me! Here, I'll explain in better detail..."
-
"Are they seriously still trying? Those idiots!"
"Now, now, Mirai. Getting irrational will get us nowhere. You do want make a new world order, don't you? Where everyone is happy?"
"Of course I do! The world is terrible...but here, I can make a perfect world where no one suffers. Mama...Mama will be proud of me!"
"She will. But in order to do that...you must enforce the rules and stomp out any defiant ones."
"Stomp out the chaos..."

"You're a smart kid. Stick with me, and both of our dreams of a perfect world will come true."

Debra Solomon - the_living
the_living is a performance-based net artwork carried out by artist Debra Solomon (US/NL) between 1997 and 1998. It centers around the online life of the digi-persona ‘the_living’, with the artist as her flesh holder. The work is highly situationist, with the_living intervening into different chatrooms of an early video conferencing software CU-SeeMe without former notice. There, she would chat with other online users and live streamed moments of her life in unusual places, such as swimming pools, in Amsterdam canals and on the bike. These live performances were often long and could last throughout the day. The_living also had a website www.the-living.org, where the artist gave explanations of the work and displayed the various ‘Tamagotchi gifts’--animation and midi files she created—for her audiences.
After the year-long performance, the_living project continued to evolve in the form of installations, broadcasts and in-person tours until a complete shift in the artist’s practice in 2003. Due to technological obsolescence, the website is no longer online and most of the digital files have been lost. Despite its ephemeral lifespan, the work is pioneering in staging artistic intervention into the online public space, and critically reflecting on the blurring boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds at the early Internet age.

The Future of Real Estate Photography: Emerging Technologies
Tumblr media
The real estate industry is constantly evolving, fueled by emerging technologies that disrupt traditional practices. When it comes to real estate photography, several new technologies are shaping the future of the field. Here are a few notable ones:
1. 360-Degree Virtual Tours: 360-degree virtual tours allow potential buyers to explore a property virtually, providing a more immersive experience than static photographs or videos. With specialized cameras and software, real estate photographers can capture every angle of a space and stitch them together to create a seamless, interactive tour. This technology enables buyers to digitally walk through a property, assessing each room and corner from the comfort of their own homes.
2. Augmented Reality (AR): Augmented reality has the potential to revolutionize real estate photography by overlaying virtual elements onto the real world. With AR, potential buyers can use their smartphones or devices to view a property and see digital furniture, decor, or other design elements placed within the space. This allows them to visualize different design choices and evaluate how a property could look once furnished – all without physically staging a space.
3. Virtual Reality (VR): Virtual reality technology immerses potential buyers in a digitally created environment, providing a fully immersive experience. In real estate photography, this means creating a virtual walkthrough where buyers can navigate a property using virtual reality headsets. The technology allows buyers to feel as if they are physically present in the property https://bokomedia.com/, exploring it from room to room, evaluating the size, layout, and ambiance in a way that traditional photographs or videos cannot provide.
4. AI-Driven Image Recognition: Artificial intelligence-driven image recognition technology can streamline the real estate photography process and enhance the quality of images. This technology uses algorithms to analyze and categorize photographs, automatically identifying and tagging elements in the images such as room types, furnishings, and architectural features. This can save time for real estate photographers and help potential buyers quickly find relevant properties based on their specific interests and preferences.
5. Drones and Advanced Aerial Photography: As mentioned in a previous article, drones are already playing a significant role in real estate photography. However, technological advancements in drone capabilities, such as improved camera stabilization and maneuverability, are making aerial photography even more accessible and stunning. Enhanced drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced flight control systems can capture breathtaking aerial shots, showcasing the exterior and surroundings of a property from unique perspectives.
In conclusion, emerging technologies are reshaping the future of real estate photography. From 360-degree virtual tours and augmented reality to virtual reality and AI-driven image recognition, these technologies provide potential buyers with an immersive and interactive experience. As these technologies continue to evolve and become more accessible, they will undoubtedly transform the way properties are marketed and sold in the real estate industry.
