This friday (EST) is the release date for Homicipher. Me and my friends who are helping me on the voice acted mod project will be playing it. We strive to translate the full dictionary (both in english and japanese, the original language.), to then make an understanding of the language's structure, and be able to give it a sound. (It will be very loosely based on japanese, as it's clearly not a latin based language, and japanese is the original language)

This game's language gameplay is unique and stands out so immensely, this project has been on the mind since we first played the demo. We hope to bring it to life.

The mod will be free!! Wether i will fund it out of my pocket, make a crowdfund, or rely solely on the generosity of people willing to help the project is yet to be determined. But i plan on making the mod accessible to all.

"Visual Novel" is a medium, not a genre. Most bad takes from both players and devs are from getting that backwards. But there's a reason for that: VNs are one of the few subsets of games where broad/common mechanics do ~not~ denote genre.

To use an example from a category that is a genre, when you say something is a FPS, you're immediately saying something about the core unit of interaction. Let's get even more specific and say something is a boomer shooter.

When you hear something is a boomer shooter you know:

1. You'll be spending a lot of time shooting. 2. That shooting will be fast-paced. 3. Aggressive movement

You can also generally assume the aesthetic theme will be something adjacent to sci-fi or horror.

When you hear that a game is a visual novel you know: 1. That you will read. 2. You might make narrative choices (but you also might not)

That's it. That's all you know. It's the equivalent of writing a book and then telling people "this is a book." Lots of things are books!

This is because the core unit of interaction in a visual novel is ~not~ a mechanic. It's the narrative. Which means that as a dev, you need to sell the fantasy of your VN, not its loose identity.

And as a player, "I don't like books a lot of books are smut" isn't substantial.

But because most categories of games do sell genre, it means a lot of devs market their work poorly and miss out on a large cut of potential players, and a lot of players miss out on some great narratives they might have loved.

exactly 1 week left until Witch on the Holy Night, the first TYPE-MOON (non-game play oriented) visual novel to ever be officially localized, releases on Steam on December 14th, 2023.

Witch on the Holy Night / Mahoyo is a coming of age story following Aoko Aozaki, a highschooler who has to balance her class president, perfect grades life with her secret afterschool life of being a mage—a secret she has to keep at the risk of death. Keeping this balance already isn't easy but one day she gets a wrench thrown into it with the introduction of a transfer student, Soujuurou Shizuki, a country boy so out of touch that he's never seen electricity before.

things Mahoyo is:

one of the most visually impressive visual novels ever made

a modern fantasy (1980s) tale about mages and magic intermingling with modern society

a coming of age tale about high schoolers finding themselves in this world

around 30 hours long

somewhat tied to other TYPE-MOON works, namely Garden of Sinners / Kara no Kyoukai and Tsukihime (but can be read without any knowledge of other TYPE-MOON works)

things Mahoyo is not:

a romance visual novel or a dating sim

a visual novel with choices or multiple endings

a video game with gameplay

Next up on our teasers are enamel pins AND die-cut stickers of our cast! At first glance they're pretty similar, but the pins have a stained glass vibe so they're guaranteed to dazzle!
