A perennial on "best films in history" lists, Battleship Potemkin is certainly one of the best-crafted movies ever. No matter how hokey and manipulative it seemed, I sat enthralled through my most recent viewing as the pounding, throbbing endless crescendo of music and editing surged toward the political victory of the Potemkin over the Czar's fleet. (The music on this version was Edmund Meisel's, which was performed at the Berlin premiere in 1926.) Because of the celebrated "Odessa Steps" sequence, which is cited in every textbook on editing and montage and in every tribute to Sergei Eisenstein or documentary about propaganda, I had forgotten that the real climax of the film is its final sequence. I had also forgotten how truly epic the film feels, with the great massing of crowds before the massacre on the steps. But is it a great film? Not if you're judging a film by any standard other than the way it gets blood pumping. It lacks insight into any human emotion other than resentment and the herd instinct. It's a masterpiece of propaganda. As with other such masterpieces, such as Leni Riefensthal's Triumph of the Will (1935), it lies to us. Which is all right, as long as we know it's lying and can keep our eye on the truth.

Revolução dos operários no navio, contra as condições de trabalho e de alimentação. Acabam por destronar 3 oficiais e iniciar um movimento social, que se repara pela quantidade de habitantes que vêm prestar homenagem ao operário morto no golpe.

Esse aglomerado acaba por desplotar uma resposta das autoridades, e um martírio na ruas, que não acontece também em alto mar, porque as outras embarcações militares se rendem antes de começar a combater. Boa fotografia, com imagens marítimas, e de concentração de pessoas.

Potemkin Zırhlısı

Sinema tarihinin en önemli filimlerinden biri olarak görülüyor ancak sinemanın sessiz dönemine ait bir örnek olarak günümüz seyircisini etkileyecek bir yönü kalmamış gibi.

Propagandasını yaptığı ideoloji bile yargılandı ama filmin dokunulmazlığı hala devam ediyor. Bunda filmin ideolojisiyle romantik bağlar geliştiren insanların filme yaptıkları güzellemelerin etkisi büyük sanırım. Eski tüfek Komünistler çekildikçe film tabu olmaktan çıkacaktır umarım.

Bebek arabasının merdivenlerden inişi Dokunulmazlar’da, gemiye çekilen bayrağın kırmızılığının gösterilmes benzeri bir sahne Schindler’in Listesi filminde yer almış.

Kazak askerlerin Odessa merdivenlerinden indiği gösterilirken paralel kurguyla yere düşen insanlar gösteriliyor. Üst bir açıdan yapılan bir çekimde askerlerin önünde kimse görünmüyor. Bebeğin annesinin vurulduğu sahnede ise başka bir paralel akış sahnesine geçiş biraz sırıtmış gibi. Bu gibi hatalara pek değinilmiyor filmi ele alanlar tarafından. Dediğim gibi, film henüz sol sinemacıların tabusu.

Kazak askerlerin bir hizada yürüşü bana robot askerleri çağrıştırdı. Aslan’lı metaforlar da anlamlıydı. Zorlayınca uçan kuşlara bile anlam yüklemek mümkün ama sanırım bunun gibi gözümüze sokulan birkaç tanesiyle yetinmek de mümkün hatta gerekli.

Eisenstein’in kurgusunda ardarda gelen ağzı açık yüz ve ağız çekimlerinin bağırmayı ifade etmesi sessiz sinema için iyi bir çözüm ama marka haline getirilmiş bir isme gönderme yapmak için bunu sesli filmlerde yapanlar var. Nihayet bu saçmalığın anlamlı kaynağını bulmuş oldum. Şimdi sanat filmi çektiğini iddia edip bağıran ağız gösterenlere “…ama Potemkin Zırhlı’sı sessiz filmdi, sen sesli film çekmişsin, ne gerek var şimdi bu anlamsızlığa. bunu yapan adamlar bir ses, bir anlatım sorununu çözmek için yapmışlar, senin amacın ne?” diye sorabilirim artık

Son olarak yine de paralel kurgu fikrinin ve sinemada kurgunun öneminin anlaşılmasına yaptığı katkıların belirtilmesi gerek diyeyim
