Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Bracket Match 53
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vukorah | Identity: wlw | Media: Bounty Hunters comic
Vukorah was an orphan raised by the leader of the Unbroken Clan. She considered him her father and his daughter her sister. Krynthia reciprocated, but her father only saw Vukorah as the help. She grew up to become a general in the Clan. She’s been a long term antagonist of the Bounty Hunters comic series. When she discovered that the young girl Cadeliah was the heir to both the Unbroken Clan and Mourner’s Wail syndicates, she began to hire bounty hunters to kidnap her. However, after Qi’ra recruited her into Crimson Dawn and promised her the leadership of the Unbroken Clan she left Cadeliah to Crimson Dawn. She returned to Corellia, where she killed the leader of the Unbroken Clan, who hadn’t really done anything since the death of his daughter. Vukorah hated him, because her work to maintain the syndicate had gone unrecognized while he mourned the girl she had always been in the shadow of. Under her command, the Unbroken Clan quickly consolidated its power over Coronet City. She was attacked and captured by T’onga’s crew, who was under the employ of Mourner’s Wail. When imprisoned by T’onga, she hostility flirted with her. However, when the crew attacked the Vermillion to rescue Cadeliah, she escaped and killed Losha’s nexu. Due to past trauma from being forced to kill her pet tooka, having to kill an animal was actually very distressing to her. She overheard Qi’ra’s plan to give Cadeliah control of both the Unbroken Clan and Mourner’s Wail. Vukorah returned to Corellia to defend her throne against those acting in Cadeliah’s name.
Vukorah’s upbringing left her very brutal, sadistic, and a bit unhinged. She grew to hate her childhood friend for falling in love with the heir of Mourner’s Wail. She was truly loyal to the Unbroken Clan, but the concept rather than individual leaders or members. She had a sense of style and a love for luxury. She’s not currently the main antagonist of the Bounty Hunters series, but has continued to make short appearances doing her own thing- likely setting up when she will come into conflict with T’onga’s crew once more.
Matthea “Matty” Cathley | Identity: wlw | Media: The High Republic Phase II
Matty Cathley was the talkative (and ADHD-coded) padawan of Master Leebon, the Jedi Order’s representative to Jedha’s convocation of the Force. Matty was assigned to introduce Vildar Mac to Jedha, causing her to spend the lead up to and the Battle of Jedha by his side. She ended up defending the bar Enlightenment from rioters and enforcer droids. During the battle, her master was consumed by the Leveler. Vildar became her new master. After the battle, she was assigned to investigate the Path of the Open Hand with Oliviah Zeveron. She had a crush on Oliviah, and the mission reignited that. However, she was eventually able to process her star-struckness. Their investigation put them right in the middle of the Night of Sorrow. During the battle, when being attacked by the Leveler, Matty was able to push through its fear effect.

Do we think we’re ever going to get confirmation that Vukorah is a trans woman? Or are the comics just going to tiptoe around it for all time? Trans girl pirate queen is such a mood and I kind of need it to be official already.

Bounty Hunters #34
I enjoyed that up until the end. The Valance/Inferno Squad stuff was great! I’m really sad we’re not getting more of that, but it played it really well. It wasn’t dragged out and got right to the point. I also dug the stuff with Vukorah and IG-88. It was actually smart and interesting. If only the enitre series could be like that!

Bounty Hunters (2020) #34 "IN THE CROSSHAIRS OF INFERNO SQUAD, PART II" The dreaded ''Inferno Squad'' has tracked down ''T'onga's'' bounty hunter crew in their hunt for ''Valance''. The cyborg may have witnessed, and thus inadvertently recorded in his cerebral processor implant, secret ''Imperial'' intelligence on the construction of a new ''Death Star''. One way or another, squad leader ''Iden Versio'' is determined to make sure that information is deleted from existence. Her team has already taken down two of the most formidable bounty hunters—T'onga and ''4-LOM!'' On ''Corellia'', the ''Unbroken Clan's'' leader, ''Vukorah'', is besieged by enemies from within her crime syndicate attempting to seize the throne. But the danger intensifies with the arrival of assassin droid ''IG-88'', who is out to collect an Imperial bounty… on Vukorah's head! Writer: Ethan Sacks Artist: Paolo Villanelli Letterer: Travis Lanham Colorist: Arif Prianto Cover artist: Ken Lashley Editor: Mark Paniccia Publication date: May 17, 2023 It's always good to get some perspective on the gruff, relentless characters we follow monthly in Bounty Hunters, so seeing a young, innocent Beilert Valance play with his model Nimbus just as a teenage Luke swooped his Skyhopper around his homestead garage certainly stands in sharp contrast to the now, as Valance works repairs on the Edgehawk, sparks flying as the work faulters. Bossk finds it hilarious as T'onga and 4-LOM return with the hyperdrive just as Zuckuss worries that something is 'off'. He's not wrong as Iden version and Inferno Squad attack, blasting in and aiming for Zuckuss, now aware that Valance is inside the Edgehawk. We hop across the galaxy to Corellia where the Unbroken Clan sanctuary is invaded by IG-11, there to bring Vukorah in for the Imperial bounty on her head. Playing for time, she persuades IG-88 to allow her to ask two questions. Knowing the droid has sensors that can tell when a target is lying she makes a truthful statement, pointing out that she is no longer leader of the Unbroken Clan, but the man to her left is. IG-88 agrees, taking him down and as he is almost overwhelmed by numbers he begins to thin the herd, taking them down quickly. The assassin droid quickly realises that it was Vikorah herself who sent him the co-ordinates, and with the Unbroken Clan decimated she now has the fresh start she seeks. [gallery link="file" size="large" columns="4" ids="144492,144489,144491,144490"] We swing back to the Edgehawk and Bossk and Valance bickering as Inferno Squad attack, a melee breaking out as the fighting intensifies. Iden explains she was sent by Lieutenant Haydenn, Valance's former flame, and that he's needed alive but his compatriots aren't. He stalls, but ultimately relents, allowing Inferno Squad to put a device on his head that will scramble his cerebal processors. Versio leaves with the squad, comming Haydenn and telling her his memories should be eradicated within a couple of days, and we see Valance sitting quietly as T'onga returns and his childghood memories begin to fade away. With the hyperdrive fixed the team are able to leave, but Tasu choses that moment to tell the team he's leaving, annoyed with how he is treated. T'onga is annoyed, but makes the surprising move of gassing her own wife Losha and asking Tasu to take her to Syphacc's Place where she will be safe, and we end the issue as a woozy Losha and Tasu walk towards the starport at the close of another cracking issue. The animosity between Bossk and Valance continues to slowly grow, continuiously entertaining as they fight so well together. This issue has seen the end of the Unbroken Clan, a change in the squad as Tasu heads off to join the Nar Kanji assassins who feel more of a family to him than his current colleagues and the wiping of those secrets inside Valance's skull (along with other more personal memories). As with Doctor Aphra, Darth Vader and the main Star Wars title,
this feels like the end of one long-running storyline and the beginning of another as we arrive on the doorstep of Return of the Jedi. Next issue promises Boba Fett, and with the main man canonically present at Jabba's Palace and about to take a sand nap inside the sarlacc it will be fascinating to see of this title is the one that gives us the run up to his arrival at Jabba's Palace. Of all the titles currently running, it really should be this one. [amazon box="B0C11JRHTT"]

Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Bracket Match 54
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Losha Tarkon | Identity: wlw | Media: Bounty Hunters comic
A former bounty hunter in her own right, Losha was the wife of the bounty hunter T’onga. The two of them retired to a farm, but when the news that Nakano Lash- the bounty hunter T’onga thought killed her brother- had resurfaced reached them, T’onga left for one last job to kill Lash. T’onga was instead “killed” by Boba Fett, and Losha found her on Ruusan where she recovered. There, Losha bonded with one of the local’s nexus. T’onga was recruited by Mourner’s Wail to track down Cadeliah, their heir. She formed a crew of already established bounty hunters as well as her wife, who was a skilled sniper. They captured Vukorah, who had assumed control of the Unbroken Clan with the help of Crimson Dawn, who told them Cadeliah was being held by Qi’ra. They traveled to the Vermillion, and while the rest of the crew fought the Knights of Ren, Vukorah escaped and killed Losha’s nexu. When Cadeliah explained she wanted to stay with Qi’ra, the crew left to do other jobs. Eventually, they rescued T’onga’s friend Valance from his forced service to the Empire. But with Inferno Squad on their tail, T’onga drugged and abandoned her wife in a friendly port to protect her.
Cohmac Vitus | Identity: mlm | Media: The High Republic Phase I
Cohmac Vitus was a Jedi scholar with an interest in folklore and cultural studies. Due to the Great Disaster, his trip to Starlight Beacon was disrupted and he, with his friend Orla Jareni, the two Jedi padawans, and the crew of the ship they were traveling with were left stranded on an ancient Drengir infested space station. Mistaking the Sith alchemy keeping the Drengir dormant for a disturbance in the Force, he was part of removing the statues sealing the beasts and then putting them back, at least slowing the spread of the Drengir across the galaxy. During that adventure, he grew close with the padawan Reath Silas, and took him as his padawan after Reath’s master’s death. They spent their time traveling the galaxy, securing cultural artifacts from planets experiencing conflict and doing comparative folklore studies- a good way to get the studious Reath out into the field. Together they investigated a Nihil plan to build a mass shadow generator and the raiders’ infiltration of Corellia.
Ever since the death of his master when he was a padawan, the Jedi’s pro-death theology never felt right with him. He spent over a decade pushing down his grief (the one emotion the Jedi actually aren’t allowed to feel), and while his adventures on the Amaxine Statione allowed him to come to work through his feelings, it left him even more uncertain of his path as a Jedi. He also doubted the idea that the Dark Side wasn’t to be studied. He also didn’t think the Jedi Order was suitable in a galaxy consumed by the Nihil. After hearing Kantam’s story about leaving the Order and feeling Orla’s death during the destruction of Starlight Beacon, he decided to leave the Order. He knighted his padawan and then gave Reath his lightsaber before hitting the bricks.
