Today would have been Norma Shearer's 121st birthday! I may celebrate watching Marie Antoinette for the costumes are stunning, and Norma was born to play queens!!!

The Thin Man (1934)
After the Thin Man (1936)
Another Thin Man (1939)
Shadow of the Thin Man (1941)
The Thin Man Goes Home (1945)
Song of the Thin Man (1947)
The DVD set I own (pictured above) only has the first four movies, all directed by W. S. Van Dyke who died by suicide in 1943. (He had been ill with cancer and a bad heart.)
I had never seen the last two movies before.
Last night I finally saw "Song of the Thin Man" (1947). It is streaming on HBO Max.
It was Myrna Loy's final picture with MGM. (The 13th of 14 films pairing William Powell and Myrna Loy.)
It wasn't directed by W. S. Van Dyke.
It wasn't written by the husband and wife team of Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich.
And after World War Two and 13 years since the first movie, it lost money at the box office.
But I'll tell you, spending time with Nick and Nora Charles always feels good to me.
The last lines of the movie:
Nick Charles: Now Nick Charles is going to retire.
Nora Charles: You’re through with crime?
Nick Charles: No, I’m going to bed.

Myrna Loy presents a birthday cake to Director W.S. Van Dyke II on the set of the 1934 film Manhattan Melodrama.
Van Dyke went on to direct Myrna in another film in 1934, The Thin Man!
Manhattan Melodrama was the first film pairing of William Powell and Myrna Loy.
Besides The Thin Man, Van Dyke also directed Powell and Loy in After The Thin Man (1936), Another Thin Man (1939), I Love You Again (1940), and Shadow of The Thin Man (1941). Known for his rapid directing style, he was known as "One take Woody." After being diagnosed with heart disease and cancer, Van Dyke committed suicide in February 1943, aged 53.
