I'm slowly reading up on building a NAS so that when I want to look at my photos I don't have to do slapstick shit with a stack of hard drives and HDD pricing is bizarre. 12, 14, and 16TB drives are all nearly identical prices. Some cool Toshiba drives out there. Haven't thought about Toshiba in a while.

I was going to do 2×12TB because while RAID isn't backup, having to restore from a cloud backup is a pain in the ass on slow internet if I can just restore from a RAID mirror and verify against hashes. I guess I'll probably end up at 2×16TB? That would really put me well beyond my Mission Time target (10 years) since I figure I generate at most like 300GB of photos a year. I guess I can get my brother to upload the family photo archive as well.

I considered doing 3×8TB but that requires me to actually consider a real PC build and not just jamming it in an old Lenovo Thinkcentre or whatever and also the pricing shakes out pretty similarly. At work I recently adopted a forgotten RAID1 server (read, old 2-bay WD MyCloud running debian) that finally had a drive failure after 11 years so I figure, 2 drives is. plenty.

For brands: Seagate or Western Digital. Don’t drive yourself crazy like I did researching for days which is objectively “better” — they are both very solid and reliable brands, and the fact is that you can have a good or bad experience with either based on factors outside of anyone’s control. Hard drives fail — it’s a fact. There’s no way to permanently prevent this. Sooner or later your hardware will wear down, even from the best manufacturers, and all you can do is plan ahead of time for getting the longest life out of your drives by properly caring for them and have something planned to replace them when they inevitably fail. Hopefully after you’ve gotten some years of good use out of them first, but like I said there’s tons of factors.

For example, I ordered a 12 terabyte HDD from Seagate once for my server that was over $300 and it was dead on arrival. Wouldn’t work at all. But the warranty was for several years and customer service replaced it no problem and the 5+ other hard drives I’ve gotten from Seagate have been flawless. But sometimes, drives just die. You feel me?

But yeah, WD or Seagate. I’ve used both. Both are highly recommended

What kind: to keep things basic, you should consider either an HDD (hard disk drive) or SSD (solid state drive). For stuff you just want to back up and make sure it’s safe/you have copies, like videos and movies, pictures, music, documents, etc… you can go with an HDD. They are much cheaper, and ideal for storing files that aren’t accessed or modified frequently.

An SSD is going to be more expensive, and those are ideal for things like applications, games, your operating system….stuff that you interact with in real time, where loading time really matters and files can be being cached and changed and modified a ton within a short period of time. In this case, an SSD will feel significantly better and faster than an HDD

What software did you use?

My goal was to use as much free, open source software as possible. I think I did pretty well there as most of it is. All of it is free. I think Obsidian is not open source. It was also really important to me to have a non- proprietary document format. I ended up choosing Markdown for this because it's reasonably robust and displays exactly the same no matter what device you're viewing/editing on.

Why'd you make your own tool?

All the AI stuff that is working it's way into writing tools makes me really uncomfortable having my stuff on someone else's servers.

Online based writing tools may have input lag or slow load times due to network traffic or communication issues with the server and both were driving me crazy/giving me heart attacks because I thought I'd lost work on more than one occasion.

Document export capabilities can be really limited depending on the software you're using which is a pain because a lot of writing software I've used has its own proprietary format. That makes migrating your work a nightmare if you ever want to switch tools and it never ports over nicely because there's a lot of extra metadata in there that regular word processors don't like.

No real way to automate back ups. A lot of online tools don't have API extension points to write your own job to do it either so you're really putting all your faith into their backup practices to ensure your stuff doesn't just disappear one day.

Limited storage space. A lot of free tools have limited storage space which meant my stuff was scattered all over the place because I didn't want to pay a monthly fee or whatever. It's frankly stupid to pay a subscription for storage when you can go buy storage (hard drives, USB sticks) for relatively cheap. For example, a Dropbox Essentials subscription (billed yearly) works out to 16.58 USD/month. Let's round up, that's like $200/yr for 3TB of storage. You can go buy a 4TB SSD for about $290 depending on the form factor you choose, but you own that drive forever. With Dropbox you have to keep paying $200/yr in perpetuity to reserve that 3TB of space on their servers. It's highway robbery. And GDrive might be free but I don't trust them.

Lastly, I was bored and I like making work for myself lol. More seriously though, I know/do most of this at my day job so it seemed like a good way to test my skills.

What kinda issues did you run into en route?

Honestly once I got going everything went very smoothly and was pretty easy but here are a few:

I ran into a few Windows hiccups with setting up some startup scripts for Syncthing and FreeFileSync mostly to do with the way Windows handles user authentication management between online and local accounts.

Setting up the Samba share initially gave me some trouble because the machines I was using were not on the same VLAN so they couldn't see each other.

Getting the WD Elements drive to mount automatically on startup was tricky because the Raspberry Pi runs a Debian based Linux distro and the drive was originally formatted to work with a Windows machine (NTFS if you're curious) and Linux does not like NTFS. I had to fiddle a lot with the permissions and mount command for that in the fstab file before it finally worked. I could have reformatted but I had other stuff on there and I wanted a challenge.

Working on an ARM arch machine (Raspberry Pi) had a bit of a learning curve because I've only worked on x86 and 64-bit systems. It changes the types of commands you use for certain things so I found myself having to look stuff up a lot.

Understanding, conceptually, how Syncthing works. It's really not that hard but it was new to me so yeah, learning curve :)

forced a few words out for M.O.W and I do mean forced because ive been feeling really disheartened about my writing lately but on the plus side, i got a chance to test drive my new writing server, and i have to say, i feel like ive outdone myself here.
