In Case You Missed It… Trivial Thursdays Interview on WRFL-FM — LISTEN HERE
Had a fun time interviewing with Mick Jeffries, the long-time and award-winning host of WRFL-FM Radio “Trivial Thursdays” this morning.  In case you missed it, here is an MP3 Audio file of the broadcast, courtesy of WRFL and Mick…edited by yours truly.  Also in the studio with us was Leif Erickson.  Great to meet and mingle with these two.  Mick even surprised me by playing an Antsy McClain song…

CD Review: Holy Oak - Second Son
Tumblr media
2017: Holy Oak Music
Genre: Folksy Alt Rock
Second Sun is folk rock at its most tender. Every song on this album is some degree of mellow, down-tempo and melancholy, and it’s clear that Holy Oak knows where their strength as a band lies. While the album’s opening tracks are a bit less promising, the album hits its stride about a third of the way through with songs about the melancholy and distance of travel. Here is where the band’s attempts at poetry (which at moments can be sublime, like in the song “Isabelle,” a song about lost love that really does ache with longing) can occasionally feel like it’s reaching a bit too far, and the metaphors can feel a bit unnatural. Aside from this, the songs are simple and unobtrusive; acoustic guitar and the occasional synthy back-up are not particularly remarkable, but set a simple backdrop for the captivating beauty of Neil Holyoak’s voice which is, perhaps, the most captivating aspect of this album.
Listen If You Love: John K. Samson, Bon Iver, The Weakerthans
Excellent Tracks: 4!, 5, 6!, 7, 8!, 9

CD Review: Van William - The Revolution EP
Tumblr media
2017   Genre: indie rock The Revolution EP is Van William's (WATERS, Port O'Brien) first solo endeavor. It's vulnerable/bleeding heart stuff with a little edge. Great melodies. Each of the songs is catchy in its own way. I made little descriptions of each track, since there are only four, but I think the first two are the best. I can imagine a lot of folks just singing along in the car... Track 1, Revolution: Features First Aid Kit. Catchy ballad about relationships with glorious sister harmonies. Track 2, Fourth of July: Very early Arcade Fire/The Shins vibe for this one. Dance-y remembrance of the girl who he loved dancing in the rain on the Fourth of July. Track 3, Never Had Enough of You: Electric guitar, slower tempo - for one he lost. Track 4, Cosmic Sign: Sweet, plucking dream-song about a boy searching for a sign. Listen If You Love: WATERS, First Aid Kit, The Shins, The Head and the Heart Favorite Tracks: 1, 2
