Photograph taken 102 years ago today, showing the wreckage of the German airship Schütte-Lanz SL 11, 3 September 1916. The dirigible was shot down over Hertfordshire by Lt. William Leefe Robinson, who earned a Victoria Cross for the action. SL 11 was built by the Luftschiffbau Schütte-Lanz company, and technically not a Zeppelin, although it is frequently misidentified as Zeppelin L 21. Oh, what a day....wrapping up Veteran's Day with a @blantons_bourbon and a @tatuajecigars Tattoo. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, 100 years ago, the guns of the "War to End All Wars" fell silent and more than 37 million people lay dead or wounded. This day is marked around the world as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. It is a day set aside to reflect on the loss and toast the fallen. Around the world, at 11 a.m. people stop, cars stop, the world pauses for a moment, and there is silence for two minutes. In the U.S. this day was changed to Veterans Day after World War II to honor those who've served in the armed forces. It has been 104 years since the start of the "Great War" and in that time more wars and conflicts have come and gone. Take a moment to reflect on those who've fallen and take a moment to thank those who serve and who have served. Take a moment and remember that today means more than a day off. Today marks a day to give back to those who have given their youth, their bodies, and minds to serve their country. Some of us may never see war first hand, while for others it will replay every hour of every day in the scars and mental damage left behind. Some of us will serve our time and leave with only memories. Some of us will be afflicted many years later by what we were exposed to while serving. No matter what, we are always changed in the end.
