A quick glimpse of another WW2-themed short film Roger is working on, it's called Friuli and it takes place in Italy in 1943.

The Story:

Luigia Brollo, [the director's] grandmother, grew up on a farm in the Friuli region of North-Eastern Italy. In 1943 her home was occupied by 2 Nazi soldiers for about 8 months. My grandmother was a teenager and her mother and 3 children had no means to defend their home. They were forced to house and feed these two soldiers with the little resources they had. Many years after the war she eventually settled in California and went on to live a long and full life until her death in 2016. She told my mother this story many times over the years and I hope to honor her by making this short film about a challenging time in her life.

As someone who is obsessed with Masters Of The Air, I'm tired of hearing people complain about how much they hate it and "it's nothing like Band of Brothers and the Pacific!"

Yes, MOTA is different from the others. But I think it serves the story well. Giving us a separate view of the war. Band and The Pacific did feel a bit different, but I attribute that to what their goals feel like to me. Band gave us the perspective of the officers leading their platoons to bounce back and keep on going. The Pacific gave us the perspective of being in way over your head, it felt more frazzled as the guys did in the Pacific side of the war. Masters Of The Air feels like they want us to feel as out of touch with things as Crosby, Buck, and Bucky feel, while also trying to show us the relief of Rosie every time he successfully accomplishes a flight.

Band of Brothers is following one company in the Army on the path from training, to D-day, to VE-Day on the European side of the war.

The Pacific is following two companies of Marines from training through VE-Day in the Pacific/Japan side of the war.

Masters of The Air is following basically 4 guys in the Air Force, from 1944 until the end of the war (I assume? Not 100% sure since we haven't seen the last episode yet). They skipped the training part of things because the training for pilots is SO different than the others. And we're not following a whole company because what they do is more individual (and over 70% of them died).

All in all, very different shows. But intentionally different, and never intended to be the same.

Bloody hell, The Zone of Interest was a film to remember. And wish I'd never seen. Simultaneously.

I have so many thoughts and none of them are coherent... except that I feel like an accomplice.

Amazing film direction. It showed the humanity.. in the naz1s. So often films and media produced about ww2 make the naz1s seem like these demonic inhuman creatures and it's rare (and terrifying) to see them presented in such a benign and, dare I say, relatable, way.

If anyone watched this film and wasn't aware it was about the ww2 concentration camps/weren't aware the holocaust happened; likely you wouldn't even realise. Instead, you'd watch the film and probably get bored with the mundanity of it all.

The cross over at the end with the present day cleaning of Auschwitz had me baffled, and then shaking. Jonathan Glazer did a fantastic job of showing the humanity in a monstrous person, and making the viewer reflect upon their own ability to disconnect from actions by writing them off as ‘work’.
