Birka’s warrior woman

This grave was found on Birka (Björko) in 1878. The grave contained human remains, remains from two horses, bowls, weaponry, a shield(boss), a chess game and saddle stirrups. The burial room was built in wood. Most likely the person was buried seated, with the bones collapsing on themselves. Some remains of textile were found.

The assumption that the person was a man was quickly made and the “high status burial of a Viking warrior” was often cited in research.

It would take until 2017 when both osteological and genetic testing proved the person was in fact a woman. To this day it is the only genetically and archaeologically proven female warrior from the Viking age.

The reason I say genetically AND archaeologically is because it is assumed that gender was a very loose concept in the Germanic age. Biological gender wasn’t necessarily denied, but there are indications that people would take on “the role” of the other gender. A woman could “step up” as a man’s son, as seen in blood feud tales where the patriarch is killed, but if there is no son to avenge him, a woman would “take up the role” and set out, armed for revenge.

Biologically male individuals have been found with “female” attributes such as beads, pendants and certain decoration styles.

From the limited amount of research there is, it seems possible that cross-dressing, gender fluidity and gender role exchange were very normal before mass christianization.

ich habe eine absolute Sensationsmeldung zu verkünden. Sage und schreibe 6 Stunden habe ich am Stück geschlafen. Was ist das bitte für eine verrückte Nacht gewesen? Und als ob das noch nicht ausreichen würde, es geht so weiter. Ich fühle mich fridch und ausgeschlafen....heute ist ein guter Tag.

Was mich trotz dieser tollen Neuigkeiten schaudern lässt, sind die Erinnerungen an unseren aktuellen Traum und unserer nach Vergeltung lechzende Walküre in Form des Krokodiles. Doch es gibt eine überraschende Wendung. Auch wenn es für sie ein leichtes gewesen wäre diesen Kampf für sich zu entscheiden, kommt es nicht zum Äußersten und sie lässt Gnade walten. Nun offenbart unsere Träumerin eine bis hierhin völlig unbekannte Seite von sich, eine weiche, vergebende. Unsere einstige Göttin der Rache wandelt sich zu einer verletzlichen, zarten Blume.

Auch der Ex-Freund erkennt gerade noch rechtzeitig den wahren Wert dieses Engels der Vergebung, ergreift die wahrscheinlich letzte Chance und zeigt unserer leidenschaftlichen Traumfrau was sie wirklich für ihn bedeutet. Ein glücklicher Ausgang des Traumes und man könnte das auch als Harmoniebedürfnis deuten. Wir aber wollen unter die Oberfläche schauen und was wir erkennen, sind sehr starke widersprüchliche Gefühle. Es ist offensichtlich das die Träumerin sehr jung sein muss, denn hier spiegelt sich ganz klar das Gefühlschaos einer pubertierenden Teenagerin wieder, die bereit ist die Welt zu entdecken. Die von Unsicherheit und Sehnsucht getrieben wird.

Einer Sehnsucht geliebt zu werden, aber ebenfalls der Bereitschaft Liebe zu schenken, auch über Artengrenzen hinweg oder er zeigt das Männer ab und zu Scheiße bauen und es sich manchmal lohnt ihnen eine 2te Chance einzuräumen 🐊🙃

Fanni Wahrmann-Schöllinger, soprano, (* 4.8.1890 Vienna, † 18.7.1970 Hannover), received her training mainly from the great Wagner soprano Amalie Materna in Vienna, made her debut in 1910 at the theater in Kattowitz (Kattowitz) and then sang there at the Stadttheater Posen (Poznań, 1911-12) and at the Rostock City Theater (1912-17). In the following years she was engaged at the Stadttheater Kiel (1917-19), then at the Landestheater Dessau (1919-24), where she sang the title role in the premiere of the opera »Magda Maria« by O. von Chelius. The highlight of her career was an engagement at the Hanover Opera House in the years 1924-34. Here she expanded her originally more lyrical role repertoire (Elsa, Gutrune, Mimi, Aida) with highly dramatic roles and then sang Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung, Leonore in Fidelio and Brangäne in »Tristan« and the wet nurse in »Frau ohne Schatten« by Richard Strauss. As a respected Wagner interpreter, she sang Ortlinde in Die Walküre at the Bayreuth Festival in 1924. The singer, who was married to the actor Ernst Wahrmann, lived in Hanover around 1950 as a teacher.
