WIP SNIP SUNDAY

This is a Drarry. Most of my long Drarry WIPs have been collecting dust because I’m terrified to commit to writing them for some reason, though I love reading them. 

This WIP is called “Someone Loves You, Draco Malfoy,” about a curmudgeonly middle-aged Draco who makes wands and would rather not be bothered outside of business hours, thank you very much. Maybe I’ll have the courage to actually finish it someday. 

The streets are bathed in the coral glow of sunset when Draco finally sets off for home. It’s that quiet time when shops have just closed and folk are hurrying home with arms around their children and hands full of crinkly bags and neat parcels. Draco ignores their cheerful clamour and plods on. 

He's definitely missed his programme, which makes him feel irritable as he stomps upstairs to his flat. Oscar is no help, his own delayed dinner earning Draco a number of alarming growls and hisses as he rummages for a can of food in the cupboard. 

Draco’s fingers ghost over the preferred tuna in favor of some nearly-expired, bland chicken. Teach that ungrateful cat not to get too comfortable. No matter how long he’s benefitted from Draco’s hospitality, the arrangement is permanently temporary. 

Draco is about to settle into his worn chintz armchair for a spot of pre-bedtime reading when an unexpected tap rattles the glass of his window. 

A barn owl scrabbles for purchase on the narrow window ledge, a largeish package affixed to his legs. 

Draco throws up the sash and stands back, allowing the owl to land on his table. 

“What’s this?” Draco asks, picking at the knotted twine until it falls away. He absently strokes the owl as he tears the brown paper away. 

Inside is a gold-foil-wrapped box of chocolates, and a plain white card. 

Draco flips it open. 

‘Someone loves you.’

He turns the card over, then the box, frantic for more information, but there it is staring him in the face in swooping curling script:

‘Someone loves you.’

It must be a mistake. 

Right? 

Who in their right mind would send a taciturn recluse like Draco an anonymous declaration of love?

Ominis Gaunt’s Wand

My personal headcanon: hawthorn wood, phoenix feather core, 11-12 inches, slightly unyielding OR yielding

Starting with the wood, I think his wand is made from Hawthorn wood. I’m not 100% confident in this though because there are some other woods I think also fit him, and the color of his wand doesn’t really help narrow it down much. If not Hawthorn, I think it could be Black Walnut or Ebony. I was also considering Acacia, Ash, Elm, Fir, Hornbeam, Poplar, and Yew at one point.

“The wandmaker Gregorovitch wrote that hawthorn ‘makes a strange, contradictory wand, as full of paradoxes as the tree that gave it birth, whose leaves and blossoms heal, and yet whose cut branches smell of death.’ While I disagree with many of Gregorovitch’s conclusions, we concur about hawthorn wands, which are complex and intriguing in their natures, just like the owners who best suit them. Hawthorn wands may be particularly suited to healing magic, but they are also adept at curses, and I have generally observed that the hawthorn wand seems most at home with a conflicted nature, or with a witch or wizard passing through a period of turmoil. Hawthorn is not easy to master, however, and I would only ever consider placing a hawthorn wand in the hands of a witch or wizard of proven talent, or the consequences might be dangerous. Hawthorn wands have a notable peculiarity: their spells can, when badly handled, backfire.” – Mr. Ollivander

I feel like this fits for Ominis because he is not what you’d expect (“a strange, contradictory wand, as full of paradoxes as the tree that gave it birth”). A Gaunt born in a house of dark magic who hates dark magic, and who isn’t about their pure-blooded nonsense either (can’t remember if this is confirmed or just a headcanon). It even fits for him being a Slytherin too, not to say that all Slytherins like dark magic and blood status, but yanno what I mean. It’s also the same wood of Draco Malfoy’s wand and it makes me wonder if it was intentional of the developers to give Ominis the same wood as another wealthy blond pure-blood sacred 28 Slytherin boy pressured into the dark arts by his family who’s almost an opposite (or a “contradiction”) of Ominis personality wise, while both having the “contradictory wand.” Also, the “passing through a period of turmoil” fits too.

Now I’m going to give some brief quotes from the descriptions of the other woods that I think fit for Ominis.

Black walnut: “seeks a master of good instincts and powerful insight,” “it is abnormally attuned to inner conflict,” “Paired with a sincere, self-aware owner, it becomes one of the most loyal and impressive wands of all.”

Ebony: “Ebony is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves,” “non-conformist, highly individual or comfortable with the status of outsider,” “the ebony wand’s perfect match is one who will hold fast to his or her beliefs, no matter what the external pressure, and will not be swayed lightly from their purpose.”

Side note: I wrote this wand wood section with his black wand in mind. Still not sure which one is officially his (which is why you’ll see three diff wands in this post) but Hawthorn fits personality wise regardless. So many possible wood options because I don’t even know if it’s brown or black. Seb’s was easier to choose because there were much less options.

Moving onto the core, I think Ominis has a phoenix feather core due to his wand’s loyalty and just how unique the wand itself is. I know unicorn hair cores are loyal too, but I feel like the pickiness of the phoenix feather core in combination with how special/unique his wand is makes it extra loyal (if that makes sense), like it has no chance of ever changing allegiance. It’s very personalized to him (the wand chooses the wizard, and his takes that to the extreme, it’s almost like it was made for him), and I think it would refuse to operate for anyone else. It just all seems very phoenix feather core-ish to me.

It is possible he could have a unicorn hair core, but I think it’s safe to completely rule out a dragon heartstring core. They are the least loyal wands, and due to everything I just explained, I can’t see his wand ever performing well for anyone else.

Phoenix feather cores are also known to “show the most initiative, sometimes acting of their own accord,” which seems very accurate considering his wand literally navigates him. According to Sebastian, it’s “almost sentient.”

Lastly, they’re capable of the greatest range of magic, which I think goes along with it having the ability to navigate Ominis. Might not be outwardly great, but it certainly is to Ominis, and it’s definitely not something you see every wand do, hence the “range.”

Next up is the length! According to Ollivander, “longer wands tend to be drawn to bigger personalities, and those of a more spacious and dramatic style of magic.” Longer wands also work well with taller witches and wizards and are best suited to bold personalities. I head canon Sebastian as having a long wand for that reason, but that doesn’t really fit for Ominis. He keeps more to himself and is more introverted, but he certainty has moments where he’s not afraid to speak up and really get in your face about things he’s passionate about (like confronting MC, a new student he barely knew, about the Undercroft, and never hesitating to call Sebastian out on his dark arts bullshit). I think his wand would probably be about 11-12 inches.

Lastly, we have wand flexibility. Wand flexibility denotes the degree of adaptability and willingness to change possessed by the wand-and-owner pair. Ominis is pretty stubborn but I don’t think he’s too stubborn. He does stick to his beliefs, and I think it would be impossible to get him to change them/the way he thinks, but at the same time MC never had too much difficulty convincing him to do things that he was against doing (the scriptorium, keeping the relic). I think his wand is somewhere in the mid to unbending scale, possibility “slightly yielding.”

Slightly yielding: Wand owners with slightly yielding wands are often very kind and compassionate, but they may have some reluctance in trusting others since they possess a strong sense of skepticism. It usually takes a lot of strong arguing before the owner of this wand will believe claims that don’t make any sense to them.

Now that I’m reading more flexibilities, I actually think it could be “unyielding” because the definition fits so well. Ollivander does say it’s about “degree of adaptability and willingness to change possessed by the wand-and-owner pair.” THE PAIR. I feel like his wand being extremely loyal/personalized to him could make it an unyielding wand, especially because Ominis is pretty stubborn himself. Please comment which you think it could be because I can only make one poll a post unfortunately.

Unyielding: A wand of this flexibility finely tunes itself to its original owner’s preferences and doesn’t stray from those preferences, even in the hands of a new owner; the new owner will just have to get used to it. It is particularly good for combative and healing magic. Unyielding wand owners tend to be very confident in themselves and/or in the things they believe in. They tend to be intelligent, somewhat cynical, and usually have well-defined principles that they will not stray from ever. Sometimes, this combination can lead to arrogance because of them insisting on how right they are without considering other points of view or whether or not they might be wrong.

Chapter Four

Chapter Five: Elegant

Three years before, Lorelei Morrigan had walked with Pansy Parkinson into Ollivander’s Wand Shop in Diagon Alley, helping her friend to find a suitable wand before the start of school. The two girls had been spending their day at Diagon Alley together, shopping for their school supplies alone after their parents had sent them out with more than enough money to get whatever it was they needed.

Both their parents couldn’t really be bothered to take them themselves. Lorelei had already gotten a wand about a week prior, when her parents had taken her to famously exclusive wandmaker Keiko Inoue, famed for her rather extensive collection of available materials.

Ollivander’s was the last stop on Pansy’s list, while Lorelei had already finished every stop on hers. So, she ventured into Ollivander’s with Pansy as mere moral support, knowing that Pansy Parkinson was often rather temperamental with those who worked in customer service.

The two eleven year-old girls walked into the wand shop to find that it was currently empty, apart from Mr. Ollivander manning the counter. The old man looked up with curiosity as they walked in. He seemed to immediately recognize them as he smiled to greet them.

“Welcome, ladies,” he said cheerfully.

“Hello, sir,” Lorelei said respectfully.

The wand maker nodded appreciatively. Pansy, however, unaffected by hesitation all her life, approached the counter eagerly.

“I’ve come to get my wand,” the dark-haired girl announced assertively.

Ollivander glanced behind her at Lorelei, who just smiled, fully aware of the experience Ollivander would be more than likely to have with her.

“Well, you’ve come to the right place,” the shop owner said with a forced smile, maintaining some sense of sarcasm in his compliance.

“I want something powerful,” Pansy announced with determination. “And beautiful, and effective… Something that can’t be beaten.”

“I’m afraid wands aren’t quite that simple, Miss…?” he stopped as if to ask her name.

Pansy rolled her eyes, offended by the fact that he didn’t recognize her immediately.’

“Parkinson!”

“Ah, yes,” Mr. Ollivander nodded with a certain regret in his eyes, “Of course… I believe I can find something suitable. One moment.”

He disappeared into a vast display of shelves upon shelves of wands, searching for one to offer to Pansy. Lorelei watched as she found humor in the situation, wondering just how badly this would go. She looked at her friend, finding that she still seemed rather satisfied with herself, as if she’d ‘won’ somehow.

After a short period of consideration, Mr. Ollivander returned with at least four different boxes, having found a decent amount of wands that might suit Pansy.

“Here you are, Miss Parkinson. Try this,” he suggested, pulling a shorter wand from its box.

“And what exactly do I do with this?” she demanded impatiently.

Lorelei sighed as she watched with her arms crossed, embarrassed by her friend’s behavior.

“Give it a wave,” the old man replied.

Pansy practically stabbed at the air with the wand, frowning as it yielded no result.

“What’s it made of?” she inquired.

“Aspen, with a core of dragon heartstring. Nine and a half inches.”

Pansy began aggressively hacking with the wand, until Ollivander interrupted, unable to watch any longer.

“Alright, alright, why don’t we try another one, hmm?” he suggested, taking the wand as Pansy just scowled.

He carefully returned it to its box, carefully taking another one from the pile of wands he’d selected. He found another, a longer, dark-colored wand.

“Perhaps this one will be a better match,” he provided, watching as she took it. “Chestnut, dragon heartstring core. Thirteen inches.”

As soon as Pansy took the wand, she brandished it proudly with a forceful flick. Lorelei looked up in surprise as one of Ollivander’s books whizzed up into the air, hovering at least two feet above the wooden countertop as he watched with satisfaction.

“Wonderful,” he remarked as Pansy laughed lightly in disbelief, looking proud and excited. “I believe a wand has chosen you.”

Pansy readily handed over the amount that Ollivander asked as she took her new wand, happy with the purchase. The shop owner eventually turned to Lorelei, who stood behind her friend.

“Will you be needing a wand as well, Miss…?”

“Morrigan,” she stated. “Lorelei Morrigan.”

“Lorelei Morrigan?” Ollivander stared at her, carefully examining her features. “Daughter of Eoin and Heloise Morrigan?” he concluded.

“Yes, sir,” she nodded.

The old man just smiled. “I remember the day I sold little Heloise Ackerley her first wand… How sweet she was, really...”

Pansy irritably rolled her eyes as soon as the conversation topic shifted from her.

“I haven’t actually spoken to your mother since, but she has grown into quite the elegant woman,” Ollivander recalled. “I’d be happy to help you find the perfect wand for you today.”

“Oh, I’ve already got a wand,” Lorelei told him, “But thank you.”

“May I ask the wandmaker?” he wondered with immense curiosity. “I’ve heard your father favors Gregorovitch, if I’m not mistaken…”

“My parents took me to Keiko Inoue,” Lorelei shared.

Pansy frowned, bored, as the look on Ollivander’s wrinkled face turned to awe.

“You… You have a custom Keiko?” Ollivander questioned.

“I do,” she replied.

“May I please see it?” he begged, immediately ashamed of his curiosity, “Forgive me…”

“It’s perfectly okay,” Lorelei promised, drawing her wand. “Here you go…”

She unsheathed her wand, handing it up to him as he took it even more carefully than he would one of his own wands, as if terrified to even scratch it. He nearly gasped as he held the instrument in his hands, amazed by the craftsmanship.

“Incredible. Absolutely exquisite,” he whispered. “I’ve never seen anything like it before… Potent, but elegant…”

Pansy crossed her arms as she waited for her friend.

“Made from cherry wood, I see. Thirteen and three quarter-inches. Quite elegant. Very rare in the west,” Ollivander observed as he held the wand in his hands. “And the core…?”

He carefully lifted it up to his ear, almost as if to listen to what it had to say for itself. His eyes widened even more as he listened.

“No. It can’t be,” he murmured, lost in the possibility, “It can’t be.”

He was petrified, as if with fear.

“Basilisk horn. However did she manage it?”

“It wasn’t cheap,” Lorelei explained. “But, when she handed me that wand… I don’t know. It’s difficult to explain, really,” she admitted.

“Please,” he said excitedly, “You must share with me. Please,” he pleaded.

“I don’t know. I just sensed it, you know?” she thought.

“Indeed I do,” Ollivander agreed. “That’s a very special wand you’ve got there… Treat it carefully,” he advised her.

“Thank you,” she smiled, taking it back.

Lorelei and Pansy left the store together, as Pansy demanded that they go and get something to eat. Just as the girls headed off, someone else appeared behind them, having been waiting in front of another shop. The young boy looked around nervously before entering Ollivander’s shop, looking only for one thing.

“Hello, Mr. Nott,” Ollivander said in surprise as he saw who he entered his store. “How can I help you?”

“That girl. The one who just left your store,” Theodore said finally.

“Miss Parkinson?”

“No, not Pansy,” Theo shook his head, “The other one. The one with the red hair. I’ve seen her before, but I don’t know her name.”

“Ah. That’d be Lorelei Morrigan,” Mr. Ollivander nodded.

“Yes! Her,” Theo realized. “Do you know anything about her?”

Ollivander studied him for a moment before providing an answer.

“I know very little about Miss Morrigan, unfortunately. However, I can say that I know her wand,” he responded thoughtfully.

“How would that help me, exactly?” Theo said inquisitively.

“Well,” the elderly man began, “Specific wands are said to be suitable to witches, and wizards, with different qualities. Such is the foundation of wandlore,” he explained.

“Wands can tell you about their owners?” the boy deduced quickly.

“That’s right,” Mr. Ollivander nodded, impressed by the child’s thoughtful and inquisitive nature.

“And what can Lorelei Morrigan’s wand tell you about her?” Theo asked him.

Mr. Ollivander thought for a while.

“Well, you see, Miss Morrigan’s wand is made from cherry wood. Rather uncommon, especially among English wizards, although certainly not unheard of. Cherry is a very fascinating wood. Prized among the wizards in Japan.”

Theo held onto every word he said with determination, trying to analyze every factor of the information that he was provided with.

“Many people see the beauty in cherry wood before they see the power, the potential. It has the potential to be a very lethal wood, especially when paired with a wand core of dragon heartstring,” Mr. Ollivander informed him. “The core of Miss Morrigan’s wand, however, is much rarer, much more powerful, and much darker than dragon heartstring.”

“What is it?” Theo questioned.

“Basilisk horn,” Ollivander said simply.

Theo looked up at him with a sparked curiosity in his eyes.

“Like Salazar Slytherin’s wand?”

Mr. Ollivander smiled, genuinely impressed by his knowledge. “Yes. Exactly so.”

“Does that mean she’s a Dark witch?” Theo asked in confusion.

“No. No, certainly not,” Mr. Ollivander assured him, “Wands are never quite that simple… Basilisk horn as a wand core would be more likely to choose an individual prone to more forceful, or aggressive magic, but Dark magic is not necessarily a given. Basilisk horn wands, as legend has it, supposedly only choose Parselmouth wielders, although I’m not convinced that this is true.”

“What else?” Theo prompted.

“Well… Basilisk horn wands are, I’m sure, fairly Dark in nature, coming from such a powerful Dark creature. The core is said to be highly powerful and highly intelligent in wands… I have heard that they can act with sentience, casting spells of their own accord in order to protect or serve their masters, and their respective agendas,” Mr. Ollivander recited his knowledge. “The basilisk horn wand would never choose a wielder who doesn’t strive for greatness… or, great evil, I admit. But at the risk of buying into old wives’ tales, the wielders of Basilisk horn wands are said to be less susceptible to most poisons.”

“Do you judge people by their wands?” Theo asked consequently.

“I wouldn’t necessarily use the word ‘judge’,” Ollivander considered. “But they do tend to be insightful indicators at times.”

“And what about my wand?” Theo asked him.

“Let’s see… Walnut, phoenix feather core… Twelve and three quarter-inches. Very pliant. You, sir, must be a clever and inquisitive individual, in my opinion,” Ollivander remarked candidly. “Walnut wands don’t choose unintelligent wizards.”

Theo considered this, seeming to be less impressed by this particular discovery than most would be.

“And, what would you make of both of these wand owners? Together?” he thought. “Their personalities interacting.”

“Well…” he said softly.

Ollivander took a while to consider the question.

“I’m not sure I’d want to imagine that,” he confessed truthfully.

Among Ancient Pines popped up during a search for fics that feature Sectumsempra Scars, and while I’m still working on that list, I thought I’d take a break to write a little Happy Hour for this fic that has stolen my heart.

First, I must commend the timing of finding this fic. It’s rather unlikely to find the perfect fic to read while on a plane to Alaska, but here it was, with all its wild Alaskan beauty and hopefully a peek of the nature that I might get to see while I’m there - although I prefer my bears and moose at a distance rather than in hamburger stealing reach.

I loved this fic - I loved how both Harry and Draco were written - their slow thaw towards each other blooming into something warmer and sweeter but never so saccharine that it was unbelievable or out of character. I enjoyed Ginny and Pansy’s appearances, and was delighted by the original characters the town of Volchii featured. I was impressed by the intentionality and creativity that went into writing the way the town’s inhabitants used magic.

If you’re looking for a bit of wild adventure, join me in the Alaskan wilderness for a moment and read this fic. I have no doubt that you’ll enjoy it just as much as I did.

My stats tell me that I've written 50, but 5 are multi-chapter collections, so... a lot. Yeah.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

733,820. If you asked me three years ago if I could ever write that much I would've laughed in your face. Isn't growth amazing?

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Harry Potter (though I do read some Good Omens, Carry on Simon and Bagginshield stuff)

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

UGH. I don't want to be honest here, since 2 of the five are Dramione fics I've now listed as ANON because of harassment reasons. From Sunset to Star Rise (Harry x Ron) Cozy fall vibes, falling in love, little to no angst (Ron has a tiny bit of anxiety, that's all)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Yes. Mainly the bigger ship ones (Dramione, looking at you) If you're wondering WHY I write rare pairs a lot, it's because rare pair fandom is a safe space with AWESOME people. We may be few in number, but WE GO HARD and LOVE HARDER.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

ALL KINDS (though I'm not great a fluffy smut). Check out my HP Kinktober Collection 2023 posting daily RIGHT NOW. It's very kinky and dark.

STAWP. It's too hard a question! Lately, I'm obsessed with Dronarry, and any combination of those three. I also think I'm more in love with stories than ships. If it's an amazing story I end it with "OMG this is the BEST EVER" and I say it about a lot of ships.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I'm writing a multichap Drarry fic where Draco is a wandmaker, and it's falling in love fluff. I'm terrified to write them because I feel like I'll get torn to shreds because the Drarry fandom is too amazing for the likes of little old me. I'll just read Drarry and call it good, and MAYBE I'll get the courage to finish someday.

Ideas. I'm chockful of ideas. Also, I read a ton, so I think the more you read, the better you write.

Indecent exposure and possession was one thing, but the latest charge was for murder. OR Harry and Draco find each other again after the war in Oxford, a completely non-magical city. Together they solve the mystery of the city which hates all wizards but them.
