Our Encounters With Evil & Other Stories Library Edition by Mike Mignola and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. Dark Horse, 2022. 9781506734149. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781506734149?partnerid=34778&p_bt
This collection contains the short graphic novels originally published as Mr. Higgins Comes Home, Our Encounters With Evil, and Falconspeare, plus preliminary sketches for each book and a few other illustrations.
All three stories feature Professor Meinhardt and his assistant Mr. Knox as they pursue the undead. Johnson-Cadwell seems like a perfect creative partner for Mignola; his art adds to the deadpan humor of both the stories and dialogue. His style has a little bit of the silliness of Richard Sala's work but it really is altogether its own thing, and it turns what would otherwise be horrifying violence into giggle-inducing moments. It's worth checking out for the sketches at the end of the book alone.

I notisced you mentioned mignola(credited for Atlantis! i had no idea) in your nov 28 animation post on american 2d animation recently. Was wondering how familiar are with his work? Do you have opinions/thoughts on the style of art?
Ps i have just started reading mignola and warwick johnson cadwell shared series Mr Higgins Comes Home which i group into this general style and wondering if you had thoughts on that?
PPs tnx 4 puttin so much material out the quality nd quntity r both imressive. Love seeing ur content on my dash<3
aah tysm that means a lot! especially when i think I'm pretty unproductive compared to the kvins and watzkys of this world lol.
sadly I'm not (yet!) familiar with Mignola's other work outside of Atlantis. i definitely want to look into it though, he's got a very appealing graphical style that I think it will be very fun to break down. like just at a glance it's a style that emphasises 2D shape over 3D form in an interesting way.
I've got a bit of a backlog of comics to comment on. next up is Witch Hat Atelier, then after that we've got The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, Dresden Codak, and I'm currently nearing the end of The Sandman which has been one hell of a project and likely an equally enormous post. but once I've gotten through all of that (not write about a thing on the internet you say?? but how would anyone know it happened!?) I'll take a look at Hellboy or something like that for definite.
