Gray Fox morning by Alice Cahill
Via Flickr:
Don and I took a drive this morning to see what we could find. On one of our walk-abouts I spotted a light shape semi-hidden in the brush. I slowly walked forward to get a better view. It was a Gray Fox!!! He was very relaxed and enjoying the warmth of the sun. Most of the time his eyes were completely closed. Don joined me taking numerous photos until the fox walked away into the bushes. What a privilege to observe this magnificent, healthy looking native fox.

USS Tallahassee (BM-9), USS Texas (BB-35), and USS Virginia (BB-13) frozen in at the location on the York River, near Yorktown, Virginia, known as "Base 2". The area was hit by a "bomb cyclone" that froze over much of the rivers and harbors.
"One of the young officers tasked with gunnery training aboard the newer superdreadnought Texas (BB-35), future Vice Admiral Bernhard H. Bieri, recalled in an oral history he gave to the U.S. Naval Institute:
They took the whole fleet into the York River, behind the submarine nets, in early 1917. We spent the winter of 1917 in the York River and the Chesapeake Bay. The Germans were prowling in the Atlantic and sinking ships all over. So we had nets up, and they put us back of those barriers in the Chesapeake Bay, where we carried out our target practices. The river and the bay froze up very hard. We had some of the old battleships that were used as icebreakers."
The Navy ordered USS Ohio (BB-12) to break up the ice in Chesapeake bay and the Potomac, but the old battleship became stuck in the ice as well.
Photographed by Sailor Ernest A. Washburn from USS Rhode Island (BB-17), circa January 1-14, 1918.

How previous burns help keep a raging wildfire away from giant sequoias (National Geographic)
From National Geographic:
When a wildfire was reported near the southern border of Yosemite National Park, officials feared for the safety of hundreds of Giant sequoia trees within nearby Mariposa Grove. But the Washburn fire skirted around the grove, avoiding the trees. The change in fire behavior is attributed to a program of preventative fires in the grove, which greatly reduced the amount of fuel the wildfire could burn.
Scientists think these forests used to burn as frequently as every 5 to 7 years due to fires started by native people or lightning. As of July 14, the Washburn fire is pushing east into the Sierra National Forest, torching areas full of dead trees that have no record of prior burns in the modern era.

Warning to fiber buyers
Update post on Sherry Tenney. She’s still selling infested fiber and fleeces and has scammed people out of tens of thousands of dollars, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General is still investigating her. The wheels of justice are slow, unfortunately.
This post is a warning about shops that use her as a source, knowing that her fleece and fiber is infested, and those that support and help her in her illegal activities. Any person and or shop listed here is to be considered as having possibly infested product, and should be avoided. They all also knowingly support Sherry’s illegal activities, or actively help her in her illegal activities, and should be avoided.
ExpressionsInFiber, Etsy shop run by Elizabeth Washburn
Finer than Frog’s Hair, FB group run by Suzanne Smith Collier
FinerThanFroggyHair, Etsy shop run by Suzanne Smith Collier
Spinaway Farm, Brice Wonders
Sheeps and Me, run by Tuesday Rose. A fair circuit seller, not online
All of these shops and sellers are confirmed to either use Sherry Tenney’s moth infested fleece and fiber to resell to others, or actively support Sherry Tenney in her illegal activities. Please avoid them, for the safety of your money and your stash.
Sherry Tenney also stores all of her fleece and fiber out in the open on her porch, outside, and under a tarp in her barn, so moths are not the only insect infestation she currently has. There is a high risk of lanternflies, an invasive species that will do high amounts of environmental harm to an area.

Started the day’s events by traveling over Mount Washburn and down to Tower – heading to Black Stone area. The trailhead parking lots were full and the south section closed due to bear activity. So onward to Wraith Falls. Many were on the trail to the falls and so were the wildflowers. Next was Undine Falls and the yellow flowers. In Mammoth stopped at the Post Office, visited Mammoth Hotel and gift shop. Drove down to Gardiner on the new Old road. Quite curvy and steep. But my old front porch sitting spot was still there. In Gardiner I shopped and witness a cowboy parade for the rodeo event. Back in Mammoth I got some huckleberry ice cream. Continued drive to Swan Lake where it started to rain. The lake was closed off due to ducks breeding. At Sheep Eaters’ cliffs the parking lot was full so onward to Norris with stops at my stream, Grizzly Lake trailhead, the Twin lakes where a buffalo was posing, and Moose Flats. At Norris the parking lot was full. Continued to Virginia Cascades side road. Walked the trail to the river and posed, then saw the falls. Onward to Cygnet Lakes trailhead. Hike about two miles in to a lake and posed. It began to rain on the way back to the van. Went back to Canyon driving the north Rim Road stopping at and walking down and back from Red Rock Overlook. Ate supper, showered, and back to camp. A wet day but enjoyable.

"Getting a milling operation there, however, means changing the law. The Minneapolis zoning code limits grain milling to a small number of heavy industrial areas.
Earlier generations of Minneapolitans wanted to keep flour production at a distance for a simple reason: Those giant operations had the potential to explode from the highly combustible flour dust. The old Washburn A Mill by the Mississippi River in Minneapolis infamously blew up once and burned down twice.
These days, however, small-scale flour milling poses fewer safety concerns, said Minneapolis City Council Member Jacob Frey. He's proposing an ordinance that would allow milling in commercial areas."

Did you know…
… that today is National Park Conception Day? On the night of September 19, 1870, members of the Washburn expedition exploring the Yellowstone area talked about the beauty of the area. Cornelius Hedges declared that the area should be protected as a park, thus starting the efforts to create the first national park. Thank you, Cornelius!~~~

Mugshot Monday - "Striped Lake Superior Mug" by Jonathan Warburg of Lake Superior Pottery with Morning Glory Cold Brew by Peace Coffee
This is a really cool mug that my wife bought me when we were at the Stone Arch Bridge Festival on Sunday. It was a surprise Father's Day gift. 🥰
I was stoked to meet Jonathan IRL (we follow each other on Instagram) and learn about how he makes and fires his work at his Washburn, WI studio.
The clay he used for this mug is really interesting. He starts with porcelain and mixes it with Lake Superior sand. Then he makes a black slip made of crushed dark rock and paints the stripes on.
He describes his work as, "Simple ingredients. A piece of the area." That's very cool.
I enjoy these are festivals because I get to chat with the potters and ask questions about their work. I learn so much from them and it's always super inspiring.
I also get to pick up their cups and see how they feel. One thing I didn't realize about Jonathan's work is how incredibly thin his pots are. So thin, yet they're strong and sturdy. It's really impressive.
I didn't plan on buying anything at the festival this year, but I was told there's a certain way I hold a mug when am really torn about if I should buy it or not. 😂 I had no idea.
After I put this mug back down on the table, my wife Cindy picked it up and when Jonathan and I were done chatting, she told him she needed to buy it for me.
She was right. I love this mug.
Give Lake Superior Pottery a follow on Instagram (@jonathanwalburg) and check out more of his amazing work. I'm sure he'll post about some more art festivals he'll be at this summer.
I was going to have some afternoon earl grey tea today, but the 90º+ temps here in Minneapolis convinced me to have some Peace Coffee cold brew instead. REFRESHING.
Cheers! ☕️ 😀
Read about a few more potters I talked to at the Stone Arch Bridge Festival on Sunday.
