In March 2007, Google’s then senior executive in charge of acquisitions, David Drummond, emailed the company’s board of directors a case for buying DoubleClick. It was an obscure software developer that helped websites sell ads. But it had about 60 percent market share and could accelerate Google’s growth while keeping rivals at bay. A “Microsoft-owned DoubleClick represents a major competitive threat,” court papers show Drummond writing.
Three weeks later, on Friday the 13th, Google announced the acquisition of DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. The US Department of Justice and 17 states including California and Colorado now allege that the day marked the beginning of Google’s unchecked dominance in online ads—and all the trouble that comes with it.
The government contends that controlling DoubleClick enabled Google to corner websites into doing business with its other services. That has resulted in Google allegedly monopolizing three big links of a vital digital advertising supply chain, which funnels over $12 billion in annual revenue to websites and apps in the US alone.
It’s a big amount. But a government expert estimates in court filings that if Google were not allegedly destroying its competition illegally, those publishers would be receiving up to an additional hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Starved of that potential funding, “publishers are pushed to put more ads on their websites, to put more content behind costly paywalls, or to cease business altogether,” the government alleges. It all adds up to a subpar experience on the web for consumers, Colorado attorney general Phil Weiser says.
“Google is able to extract hiked-up costs, and those are passed on to consumers,” he alleges. “The overall outcome we want is for consumers to have more access to content supported by advertising revenue and for people who are seeking advertising not to have to pay inflated costs.”
Google disputes the accusations.
Starting today, both sides’ arguments will be put to the test in what’s expected to be a weekslong trial before US district judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia. The government wants her to find that Google has violated federal antitrust law and then issue orders that restore competition. In a best-case scenario, according to several Google critics and experts in online ads who spoke with WIRED, internet users could find themselves more pleasantly informed and entertained.
It could take years for the ad market to shake out, says Adam Heimlich, a longtime digital ad executive who’s extensively researched Google. But over time, fresh competition could lower supply chain fees and increase innovation. That would drive “better monetization of websites and better quality of websites,” says Heimlich, who now runs AI software developer Chalice Custom Algorithms.
Tim Vanderhook, CEO of ad-buying software developer Viant Technology, which both competes and partners with Google, believes that consumers would encounter a greater variety of ads, fewer creepy ads, and pages less cluttered with ads. “A substantially improved browsing experience,” he says.
Of course, all depends on the outcome of the case. Over the past year, Google lost its two other antitrust trials—concerning illegal search and mobile app store monopolies. Though the verdicts are under appeal, they’ve made the company’s critics optimistic about the ad tech trial.
Google argues that it faces fierce competition from Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and others. It further contends that customers benefited from each of the acquisitions, contracts, and features that the government is challenging. “Google has designed a set of products that work efficiently with each other and attract a valuable customer base,” the company’s attorneys wrote in a 359-page rebuttal.
For years, Google publicly has maintained that its ad tech projects wouldn’t harm clients or competition. “We will be able to help publishers and advertisers generate more revenue, which will fuel the creation of even more rich and diverse content on the internet,” Drummond testified in 2007 to US senators concerned about the DoubleClick deal’s impact on competition and privacy. US antitrust regulators at the time cleared the purchase. But at least one of them, in hindsight, has said he should have blocked it.
Deep Control
The Justice Department alleges that acquiring DoubleClick gave Google “a pool of captive publishers that now had fewer alternatives and faced substantial switching costs associated with changing to another publisher ad server.” The global market share of Google’s tool for publishers is now 91 percent, according to court papers. The company holds similar control over ad exchanges that broker deals (around 70 percent) and tools used by advertisers (85 percent), the court filings say.
Google’s dominance, the government argues, has “impaired the ability of publishers and advertisers to choose the ad tech tools they would prefer to use and diminished the number and quality of viable options available to them.”
The government alleges that Google staff spoke internally about how they have been earning an unfair portion of what advertisers spend on advertising, to the tune of over a third of every $1 spent in some cases.
Some of Google’s competitors want the tech giant to be broken up into multiple independent companies, so each of its advertising services competes on its own merits without the benefit of one pumping up another. The rivals also support rules that would bar Google from preferencing its own services. “What all in the industry are looking for is fair competition,” Viant’s Vanderhook says.
If Google ad tech alternatives win more business, not everyone is so sure that the users will notice a difference. “We’re talking about moving from the NYSE to Nasdaq,” Ari Paparo, a former DoubleClick and Google executive who now runs the media company Marketecture, tells WIRED. The technology behind the scenes may shift, but the experience for investors—or in this case, internet surfers—doesn’t.
Some advertising experts predict that if Google is broken up, users’ experiences would get even worse. Andrey Meshkov, chief technology officer of ad-block developer AdGuard, expects increasingly invasive tracking as competition intensifies. Products also may cost more because companies need to not only hire additional help to run ads but also buy more ads to achieve the same goals. “So the ad clutter is going to get worse,” Beth Egan, an ad executive turned Syracuse University associate professor, told reporters in a recent call arranged by a Google-funded advocacy group.
But Dina Srinivasan, a former ad executive who as an antitrust scholar wrote a Stanford Technology Law Review paper on Google’s dominance, says advertisers would end up paying lower fees, and the savings would be passed on to their customers. That future would mark an end to the spell Google allegedly cast with its DoubleClick deal. And it could happen even if Google wins in Virginia. A trial in a similar lawsuit filed by Texas, 15 other states, and Puerto Rico is scheduled for March.

Solar Grove Introduces a Personal DRM Receiver
By RW Staff March 7, 2025
The Digital Radio Mondiale consortium is welcoming the announcement of a small and affordable radio receiver model that will be made in India.
It will be manufactured by a local affiliate of Solar Grove Solutions, a U.S.-based company that makes accessible devices.
Model N88 is a medium-wave, shortwave and VHF Band II/FM receiver with analog and DRM reception. It runs on three AA batteries and is expected to be available for purchase in Q4 of this year. Pricing has not yet been announced.
“This is a significant step towards delivering cutting-edge technology at accessible prices to a global audience,” wrote DRM Consortium Chair Ruxandra Obreja.
The N88 was developed in collaboration with CML Microcircuits and Alongside Tech, which is providing design and application development. The latter company recently joined the DRM consortium.
The organizations highlighted the receiver for its small size, low power consumption and integration with an Android app.
Renatus Pinto of Shemish Grove Solutions India, the receiver’s manufacturer, was quoted in the announcement, “We believe this unique DRM radio will revolutionize the way people experience radio, offering a unique blend of traditional analog reception and the advanced capabilities of DRM.”
Although the receiver is intended for global markets, the fact that it will be made in India is notable, as the country is an important potential growth market for DRM. The consortium maintains a web page devoted to the use of DRM in the country. All India Radio uses the DRM standard in the AM bands there. The national government has not announced a decision about the digitization of the FM band.

NASA fires chief scientist, more Trump cuts to come
March 12, 2025
NASA announced Tuesday the dismissal of its chief scientist and others to comply with orders from President Donald Trump, marking the latest in a series of administration actions undermining climate change research.
While the move affects only 23 people, a spokeswoman indicated more cuts are coming.
The first round notably eliminates the Office of the Chief Scientist, led by Katherine Calvin, a renowned climatologist who contributed to key UN climate reports. She and other US delegates were also barred from attending a major climate science meeting in China last month.
"To optimize our workforce, and in compliance with an Executive Order, NASA is beginning its phased approach to a reduction in force, known as a RIF," agency spokeswoman Cheryl Warner said.
"A small number of individuals received notification March 10 they are a part of NASA's RIF. If they're eligible, those employees may opt to participate in the Voluntary Early Retirement Authority, or VERA, or complete the RIF process."
Also eliminated are the Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Branch of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
NASA has so far avoided the deep cuts affecting other agencies, reportedly due to last minute intervention by Jared Isaacman, Trump's nominee for NASA chief. Isaacman, an e-payments billionaire and SpaceX customer, is seen as close to Elon Musk—Trump's key advisor and architect of federal cost-cutting efforts.
In February, NASA had been preparing to lay off around a thousand probationary employees. However, Isaacman reportedly asked for the cuts to be put on hold, according to Ars Technica. NASA has not explained the reversal.
The new layoffs, first reported by NASA Watch citing an internal memo, could signal a shift away from research and toward exploration.
Trump and Musk both support a human mission to Mars. In his State of the Union address last week, Trump declared the US would "plant the American flag on the planet Mars and even far beyond."
NASA plays a crucial role in climate research, operating a fleet of Earth-monitoring satellites, conducting airborne and ground-based studies, developing sophisticated climate models, and providing open-source data to researchers and the public.
Trump, who has called climate change a "scam" and expressed disdain for the UN and climate science, has already pulled the US out of the Paris Agreement for a second time.
Meanwhile, his administration has dismissed hundreds of employees at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the nation's other key climate agency, with more cuts expected.

Next New Networks, Part 3

I’m going to try, in as few posts as possible, to create a coherent timeline of the short, eventful life of Next New Networks, an early, consequential moment in streaming video history.
From Part 1: Emil Rensing and I, with a huge assist from future Tumblr creator David Karp, stumbled into the brave new world of online video without much of a plan.
From Part 2: Our friend –my former partner at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, and our future Next New Networks partner– Jed Simmons introduced us to Spark Capital in Boston, who wanted to partner and fund Next New.
Part 3: Late 2006
What do we do now?
Once Spark signaled their interest, we needed to get serious. I still had Frederator Studios, my successful and increasingly busy independent cartoon production company, but the excitement of this opportunity was overwhelming. Even if I was significantly older than the typical internet entrepreneur, I felt that my background in media and production could be meaningful. The first phase of the consumer internet required deep engineering skills because the infrastructure was still somewhat nascent. Web 2.0 had developed enough tools that even someone with my limited skills could participate. Besides, I had Emil on my side, someone who had a unique understanding of the state of the tech world.
By summertime, after a variety of conversations and meetings, Emil and I settled on a co-founding team. Jed Simmons, of course. Emil had a start up friend –Tim Shey– who’d sold his DC based, interactive agency and moved to New York where he was consulting with some early stage video companies. I was stretched to thin to have an operating role in the joint, so we all agreed that my childhood friend and adult colleague Herb Scannell –former Vice Chairman of MTV Networks and CEO of Nickelodeon– would be a perfect CEO. Luckily, he agreed, and our management line up was in place. (David Karp would be our founding developer, until he launched Tumblr several months later, of course).
We can leave the machinations of filling out the A-round of investment aside. Suffice to say, many venture capitalists were uninterested in any idea that didn’t have unique software attached –we didn’t– but we put together an investor group and board of directors that were excited with our vision.

Next New Networks posters designed and illustrated by Frank Olinsky
Our vision? ah. yes. By the time we were on the road pitching our wares, we had taken the basics of VOD Cars and Channel Frederator and put together a plan that was based on “communities of interest,” which we felt would be the engines of viewership and growth. As Tim Shey later wrote:
Next New Networks popularized the ideas of videoblogging and advertiser-supported online video, and pioneered the multi-channel network (MCN) business model and the concept of audience development, assembling a diverse and successful portfolio of original programming including hit channels Barely Political, VSauce, and ThreadBanger, and a network of independent creators such as The Gregory Brothers—racking up over 2 billion video views and thirteen Webby Awards, more than any online media company at the time.
Virginia Heffernan of the New York Times was probably the writer that caught onto what we had accomplished better than most.
By March 2007, we were fully funded with our first round, expanded past the Frederator/NY office into a larger space in the same building on Park Avenue South, and started to put together an amazing start up staff that could actually execute. At least, what we’d morphed our vision into. Super distribution!
(More to come.)

The judge ruled that developers should be able to link to other ways to make purchases from inside their apps, so they could process payments via their own website and payment systems. In doing so, developers should have been able to forgo paying Apple’s 30% commission on in-app purchases.
Some developers are already making changes to use their own payment system. I’ve read that Spotify is preparing a new release and Epic wants to return to the store with their own payment system. John Geubers hot take on Epic returning is a good read and one I hadn’t considered. I just figured it was a done deal, it might be?

The total commercial time was 61 minutes! An hour of commercials! One third of the time watching the race was commercials. Their side by side commercials, which they think is the cats meow, suck. The commercial takes up most of the screen and we get commercial audio.
I’ve seen action happening on the track I’d love see and hear full screen.

3 billion users = $15–$20 billion is not real math. It’s just bullshit. The users are only valuable right now because they perform a lot of Google web searches within Chrome. Chrome users also make money for Google by using other Google properties that show ads, like Maps and Gmail. And Chrome encourages users, in general, to use Google properties and services like Docs. If you try to work out how valuable Chrome is to Google, it’s seemingly worth a veritable fortune. But that doesn’t mean Chrome holds any value of its own, on its own.
Before reading this I was wondering how a company who forked WebKit to create Chromium is worth anything? As John points out it’s basically Google Search and Marketing. They also have great online services in Gmail and Google Docs. Read John’s piece he says it all.

Web Designers Virginia Beach Businesses Rely On
Choosing the right web designers is crucial. The wrong team can leave you with a cookie-cutter site that underperforms and alienates your audience. Commonwealth Creative Marketing has earned its reputation among the top website designers Virginia Beach has to offer because of its deep-rooted commitment to quality and originality.
Each project begins with a discovery phase, where their website designers dive into your business model, goals, and industry. From there, they develop a layout that not only reflects your brand's visual essence but also supports your business functions—whether that's driving leads, supporting e-commerce, or educating visitors.
Every website design incorporates on-page SEO foundations, optimized metadata, and clean coding practices—ensuring that your site is built to be both beautiful and discoverable.
Strategic SEO for Sustainable Visibility
In the world of digital marketing, visibility is everything. You might have the best website and services in your industry, but if people can’t find you online, it doesn’t matter. That’s where Commonwealth Creative Marketing excels. As one of the top SEO companies in the region, they offer comprehensive strategies that boost search engine rankings and drive organic traffic.
From technical audits to keyword optimization, link-building campaigns, and ongoing analytics monitoring, their SEO Virginia Beach team creates a long-term roadmap for search engine success. Every campaign is data-driven, ensuring measurable results and continual improvement.
They specialize in both local and national SEO, helping businesses rank in competitive search environments. Whether you're aiming to dominate the local market or expand your reach nationwide, Commonwealth Creative Marketing's SEO solutions are tailored to match your growth objectives.
Full-Service Marketing Companies Virginia Beach Trusts
Marketing is more than just advertisements—it's about storytelling, strategy, and conversion. Commonwealth Creative Marketing is one of the few marketing companies in Virginia Beach that offer a holistic suite of services under one roof. From content creation and branding to paid advertising and digital strategy, their services are designed to elevate brand presence across multiple platforms.
Their marketing Virginia Beach experts develop and execute plans based on thorough research and industry trends. They know that no two businesses are the same, so each campaign is built around unique KPIs and audience behavior.
Whether your focus is digital, print, or cross-platform marketing, Commonwealth Creative Marketing brings the creative firepower and analytical rigor necessary to generate real business impact.
An Integrated Approach to Growth
What makes Commonwealth Creative Marketing stand out among other web designers and marketing companies is their integrated approach. Website design, SEO, and marketing are not treated as isolated services but as interconnected components of a larger digital ecosystem.
For instance, the team ensures that your newly designed website is SEO-optimized from day one. They also align marketing campaigns with your website's performance metrics, allowing them to tweak content, landing pages, and ad strategies based on real-time data.
This holistic mindset leads to synergy between all digital touchpoints, resulting in a more cohesive and effective online presence. It's not just about looking good online—it's about building a digital framework that works tirelessly to convert visitors into loyal customers.
Creative Vision Meets Technical Expertise
One of the most compelling reasons to partner with Commonwealth Creative Marketing is the blend of creativity and technical mastery. Too often, businesses have to choose between artistic design and backend functionality. At Commonwealth, there's no compromise.
Their web designers possess a strong eye for visual storytelling, while their developers ensure every site is optimized for speed, scalability, and security. Their SEO team balances algorithmic knowledge with compelling content strategies, and their marketers bring the best of branding and analytics together.
The result is a finely tuned machine that’s designed to grow with your business and evolve with changing market dynamics.
Serving Virginia Beach and Beyond
While proudly rooted in Virginia Beach, Commonwealth Creative Marketing serves clients far beyond the local area. Still, their understanding of the local business climate gives them an edge when it comes to regional branding and community engagement.
From restaurants and retail to law firms and nonprofits, businesses across Virginia Beach have benefited from their nuanced understanding of the market. But with digital services that scale, they’re also capable of executing national campaigns and serving clients from coast to coast.
Their proven success in both local and national arenas has positioned them as one of the most versatile and trusted digital partners for growing businesses.
Why Invest in Professional Digital Services?
In a world where DIY website builders and automated SEO tools are more accessible than ever, many businesses question the need for professional services. The truth is, while these tools might help you get started, they rarely deliver the depth, customization, and performance needed to truly compete.
Professional website designers bring nuanced understanding of layout psychology, conversion optimization, and brand storytelling. Expert SEO companies know how to interpret ever-changing algorithms and leverage them for long-term gains. And skilled marketing companies can craft compelling narratives that engage and convert.
When you choose a partner like Commonwealth Creative Marketing, you're not just investing in a service—you're investing in a comprehensive growth strategy designed for measurable success.
The Future of Digital Starts Here
As technology continues to evolve, so do consumer expectations. Businesses must stay ahead of the curve—not just keeping up with trends, but actively shaping them. Commonwealth Creative Marketing stands ready to guide your brand through this exciting digital frontier.
Whether you're seeking an elegant new website, enhanced search engine visibility, or powerful marketing campaigns, this Virginia Beach-based agency has the talent, tools, and tenacity to make it happen.
Don’t settle for ordinary. Partner with a team that brings passion, precision, and innovation to every project. With Commonwealth Creative Marketing, the future of your business begins now.
