The US is reported to have made more than 100 weapons sales to Israel, including thousands of bombs, since the start of the war in Gaza, but the deliveries escaped congressional oversight because each transaction was under the dollar amount requiring approval.

The Biden administration has [publicly] become increasingly critical of the conduct of Israeli military operations in Gaza and the failure to allow in meaningful amounts of humanitarian aid, with the death toll now over 30,000 and with famine looming. But it has kept up a quiet but substantial flow of munitions to help replace the tens of thousands of bombs Israel has dropped on the tiny coastal strip, making it one of the most intense bombing campaigns in military history.

The Washington Post reported that administration officials informed Congress of the 100 foreign military sales to Israel in a classified briefing. Few details are known of the sales, because keeping each one small meant their contents remained secret, but they are reported to have included precision-guided munitions, small diameter bombs, bunker busters, small arms and other lethal aid.

The White House spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, declined to comment on the report on Wednesday.[...]

“This doesn’t just seem like an attempt to avoid technical compliance with US arms export law, it’s an extremely troubling way to avoid transparency and accountability on a high-profile issue,” Ari Tolany, director of the security assistance monitor at the Centre for International Policy thinktank, said.

She added that, in exploiting the loophole, the Biden administration was following the steps of its predecessor.

“They’re very much borrowing from the Trump playbook to dodge congressional oversight,” Tolany said. The state department office of the inspector general found that between 2017 and 2019, the Trump administration had made 4,221 below-threshold arms transfers to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, worth an estimated total of $11.2bn.

The under-the-radar deliveries made by the Biden administration to Israel were additional to the three major military sales that were made public since the start of the war: $320m in precision bomb kits in November and 14,000 tank shells costing $106m and $147.5m of fuses and other components needed to make 155mm artillery shells in December. The December deliveries of tank and artillery shells also sidestepped congressional scrutiny because they were made under an emergency authority.[...]

“We continue to support Israel’s campaign to ensure that the attacks of 7 October cannot be repeated. We have provided military assistance to Israel because it is consistent with that goal,” Matthew Miller, the state department spokesperson, said. “We support Israel’s legitimate military campaign consistent with international humanitarian law.”

The state department has been vague about how much effort it is putting into assessing whether Israeli forces are committing war crimes. A process called Civilian Harm Incident Response Guidance (CHIRG) was set up in September last year, before the Gaza war, to make assessments of the use made of US armaments, and Israel’s military operations are under review, but the process is slow and does not commit the administration to taking remedial action.

The Fall 2024 Fanauthor Workshop is a 7-week writing course led by Betts (@bettsfic). The workshop lends a supportive space to writers who identify as fans to receive constructive feedback on fanfiction, original fiction, or creative nonfiction.

We meet weekly over Zoom. You can apply for one of two sessions:

Group A: Wednesdays from Oct. 9 - Nov. 20, 12-2pm EST

Group B: Mondays from Oct. 7 - Nov. 18, 6-8pm EST

What

FAW is a feedback-oriented workshop with the occasional generative session. This means that each week we read 2 pieces submitted by participants, offer written feedback, and discuss them over Zoom. You'll be able to sign up for the week you would like to workshop your own piece, which can be anything under 6k words.

There may be weeks where, in lieu of workshopping, I present external readings and writing exercises. These sessions will be dependent on the number of participants. For example, if we have 10 participants and 6 workshop weeks, that means one week will be devoted to a reading discussion and generative activity.

I developed a workshop model that focuses mostly on affirmations and positivity, as well as descriptive over prescriptive feedback, which is to say, describing one's experience of reading rather than prescribing solutions to perceived problems. We also present improvement-oriented feedback, but avoid negativity, judgment, and pedantry. Week 1 is spent going over the model and how to give feedback.

About FAW

The first FAW was held in 2017 as an independent study in my MFA. I restarted it in 2022 and since then have led 9 sessions with a total of over 50 participants, about half of whom have participated in the workshop more than once.

Participation in the workshop includes entrance into the FAW community, an active Discord server where we host:

Ongoing accountability meetings, where we chat over Zoom about our projects and set goals for ourselves every other week

A monthly longform writing workshop, where writers can workshop any story between 6k and 100k words

A short story club, where we read and chat about original short form works

Events and activities like movie nights and co-op gaming

Scheduled write-ins and impromptu writing sprints

We also chat about writing and craft, offer resources, and share many, many pet photos.

In addition, participants of the workshop receive:

A one-hour consultation with me to go over your workshop feedback, come up with a plan for revision and/or publication, or anything else you’d like to discuss regarding your writing

Open enrollment in future workshops

Priority sign-ups for WTFS (Write the Fucking Story), WIP Cleanout, and other one-off generative sessions

Eligibility

Anyone over the age of 18 who considers themselves a participant of fandom and who is familiar with fanfiction may apply. A stable internet connection is also required.

Cost

The cost of the workshop is "pay what you can" with the recommended amount of $300. To be as inclusive as possible, I don't want money to be a deterrent for anyone interested in participating.

Payment (or notification of nonpayment) will be requested prior to the start of workshop via PayPal, Venmo, or Wise. You can also pay in installments.

An informal cover letter discussing your fan history and goals as a (fan)writer (more specific instructions on submittable)

A short sample of your writing, either original work or fanfiction. This may be previously published/posted

Are there any content restrictions to what I can workshop?

The only restriction is word count (max 6k), with the following caveats:

If you workshop a piece in a form other than prose (for example, a script), your peers may not be able to offer constructive feedback on that aspect of the work. Participants are asked only to have a familiarity with prose.

Content warnings are required for each piece (if applicable), and participants who are uncomfortable reading certain subject matter may abstain from your workshop.

What is the time commitment of the workshop?

As a participant of the workshop, you'll be asked to:

Workshop any piece of your own prose up to 6k words, which will need to be uploaded to the group folder one week before your workshop.

Read 2 pieces per week, write out your individual crit, and attend the workshop itself.

What is the timeline of the workshop?

In week 1, we go over the syllabus and do a writing exercise. Weeks 2 through 7 will be a workshop, a discussion of an external reading, or a writing activity. Prior to the start of workshop, you'll be able to sign up for the week you would like to workshop your piece.

Do I have to participate in the Zoom meetings (camera and mic on)?

Attending the workshop itself is required, and everyone is asked to offer at least one note of positive feedback on each piece, so mics are necessary. Cameras are preferred but not required.

You can't asynchronously participate, i.e. read the pieces and offer written feedback without attending the sessions.

Can workshop participants submit to OFIC Magazine?

Yes! Part of the reason I run the workshop is to inspire and promote the original work of fanwriters. You can follow us on tumblr @oficmag.

Who is running the workshop?

@bettsfic! In short, I lived a dreary cubicle life as a banker until I found fanfiction at 24. I loved it so much that I quit my job to get an MFA in creative writing. I loved the MFA so much that I became a writing teacher. I have some publications, awards, an agent, and 2 million words of fic on ao3. I don't have a book out yet but I'm getting there.

Currently I'm a writing coach and freelance editor. I also have a lowkey writing-related newsletter. And I've been answering writing advice asks on my blog for 10 years.

If you want an idea of the kind of writing activities I create, last summer I worked with @books on a workshop series which includes craft essays and some fun prompts.

IRS to go after executives who use business jets for personal travel in new round of audits

WASHINGTON (AP) — First, there were trackers on Taylor Swift and other celebrities’ private jet usage. Now, there will be more scrutiny on executives’ personal use of business aircraft who write it off as a tax expense.

IRS leadership said Wednesday that the agency will start conducting dozens of audits on businesses’ private jets and how they are used personally by executives and written off as a tax deduction — as part of the agency’s ongoing mission of going after high-wealth tax cheats who game the tax system at the expense of American taxpayers.

The audits will focus on aircraft used by large corporations and high-income taxpayers and whether the tax purpose of the jet use is being properly allocated, the IRS says.

“At this time of year, when millions of hardworking taxpayers are working on their taxes, we want them to feel confident that everyone is playing by the same rules,” IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel said on a call with reporters to preview the announcement. Tax season began Jan. 29.

“These aircraft audits will help ensure high-income groups aren’t flying under the radar with their tax responsibilities,” he said.

There are more than 10,000 corporate jets in the US., according to the IRS, valued at tens of millions of dollars and many can be fully deducted.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed during the Trump administration, allowed for 100% bonus depreciation and expensing of private jets — which allowed taxpayers to write off the cost of aircraft purchased and put into service between September 2017 and January 2023.

Werfel said the federal tax collector will use resources from Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act to more closely examine private jet usage — which has not been closely scrutinized during the past decade as funding fell sharply in the last decade.

“Our audit rates have been anemic,” he said on the call. An April 2023 IRS report on tax audit data states that “continued resource constraints have limited the agency’s ability to address high-end noncompliance” stating that in tax year 2018, audit rates for people making more than $10 million were 9.2%, down from 13.6% in 2012. And in the same time period, overall corporate audit rates fell from 1.3% to .6%.

Mike Kaercher, senior attorney advisor at the Tax Law Center at NYU said in a statement that the IRS should also revisit how it values personal use of corporate aircraft, beyond just how flights are reported.

“The current rules allow these flights to be significantly undervalued, enabling wealthy filers to pay much less in taxes than fair market value would dictate, and it’s within the IRS’ authority to revise these rules,” Kaercher said.

Werfel said audits related to aircraft usage could increase in the future depending on the results of the initial audits and as the IRS continues hiring more examiners.

“To be clear, that doesn’t mean everyone in a high-income category partnership or corporation is evading or avoiding their tax responsibility,” Werfel said. “But it does mean that there’s more work to do for the IRS to make sure people are paying what they owe.”"

A Guide to Persona 5 Royal Confidant Requirments

Persona 5 Royal saw an additional semester and the return of the Phantom Thieves following its initial release on September 15, 2016. Here is your guide to Persona 5 Royal in case you need to review anything you missed or are having trouble understanding even years after the game's October 31, 2017, release.

It's always a good idea to review before diving into the additional characters and confident rank requirements! In Persona 5, you take on the role of a teenage kid who was wrongfully accused of a crime and serves out his probation in Shibuya, Japan by living in a cafe's attic under the owner's care. As the game progresses, players come across characters who have also been harmed by sinister adults, which opens up a method for forcing them to confess their wrongdoings. With a runtime of 110 hours, this synopsis hardly covers the entire game, but it does cover the main idea.

Confidant Requirments

In Persona 5 Royal, to enjoy the extra semester there must be certain confidant ranks reached to obtain the true ending. Two new characters, Kasumi Yoshizawa and Takuto Maruki, and one returner, our favorite detective, Goro Akechi.

This edition of Persona 5 includes the chance to hang out with Akechi, unlike the original game. To receive the true ending, players must:

Remain loyal to your friends during the rank 7 hangout

Don't worry if you end up stuck at rank 6; most players will experience this until November. You can find him in Kichijoji outside the Penguin Sniper Lounge. Typically, this will continue until rank 6, when he will be located at a Cafe Leblanc booth. Usually, Akechi is available on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Kasumi Yoshizawa

Kasumi is a new addition to the cast in Persona 5 Royal, and with this comes her rank requirement:

Raise Kasumi’s Confidant rank to 5 before the end of the year.

Despite how straightforward this may sound, Kasumi is more busy than any other character in the game when it comes to her schedule. To reduce the possibility of running out of time, it is best to hang out with her every chance you get. During the day, she can be found in Kochijoji, and until the third semester, her rank remains locked at 5.

Takuto Maruki

Another new addition to the cast is Maruki, the school counselor brought in due to Kamoshida. His rank requirement is:

Reach Maruki’s Confidant rank 9 before mid-November

To access the third semester, Maruki's confident rank is necessary. After school, you can find him outside the nurse's office. Although there are more opportunities for sessions with Maruki, it is also advised to hang out with him whenever he is free due to the long period in which he is unavailable.

As Persona 5 Royal introduces new personas, a brand-new palace, and an emotional rollercoaster for every player, the game's allure never fades. Remember to have fun exploring and getting to know the new (and original) characters in the new edition. Just remember to raise those confidant ranks and get to work in the metaverse!

Charlie Hebdo is back on crusading for freedom of expression. While the Danish government presented a bill to Parliament on Friday, September 1, banning public defacing of religious objects, the secular satirical French weekly is criticizing Copenhagen's decision to reinstate the crime of blasphemy. The subject will feature on the front page of the Wednesday, September 6, issue.

The newspaper is launching an appeal to "warn citizens committed to democratic values" alongside eight Scandinavian media outlets. Among them, seven Norwegian newspapers and online sites and one Danish media outlet are criticizing the return of this 334-year-old law, which was repealed in 2017.

In recent months, there has been one controversy after another in northern Europe, with Iraqi political refugees repeatedly burning Qurans in front of the press. The Scandinavian far right is exultant at other similar degradations carried out within its ranks. The emotion that swept through the Muslim world at these images of book burning led, for example, to a hundred people attacking the Swedish embassy in Baghdad on July 20.

'An outrageous law'

Against this backdrop of heightened tensions, Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard has championed a law designed to "prohibit the inappropriate treatment of objects of significant religious significance to a religious community." Anyone publicly desecrating a Bible, Torah, Quran or religious symbols such as a crucifix will soon face a fine or up to two years imprisonment.

For the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo, who were targeted by an Islamist attack on January 7, 2015, this "ad hoc legislation" is worrying. "It's serious that a European country should decide to reinstate a medieval offense," warned the publication's director, Riss, who sees it as all the more symbolically important given that Denmark was the scene of the Muhammad cartoons affair in 2005.

"In doing this, the Danish government is bowing to pressure from Muslim countries," complained Gérard Biard, the weekly's editor-in-chief. "With this scandalous law, the Danish government is being dictated to by authoritarian regimes such as Iran, Saudi Arabia and Taliban Afghanistan. The vagueness surrounding this bill, which in reality concerns only the Quran, leaves the door open to all interpretations and therefore all penalties," even though the Danish minister of justice has assured that the law will not cover cartoons.

By embarking on this new battle, and at the risk of being accused of encouraging book-burners, Charlie Hebdo will surprise neither its supporters nor its detractors. "We're not trying to export French-style secularism but to support freedom of expression, which is threatened by this law. Everyone has the right to practise their religion, it's not about the Quran, it's about fighting religious fundamentalism," Riss said. The newspaper is currently in difficulty. Only 17,000 copies were sold on newsstands per week in August, compared with 20,000 in January 2023 and 25,000 in May 2022. Subscribers still hover around 30,000, but this is 3,000 fewer than nine months ago, and 7,000 fewer than in May 2022.

Hi Jakk

Do you remember when we were meeting for our anniversary..we were outside of the bike shop, and i was upset …..i..got…I  got upset.

 And i threw..that water bottle? At the tree? And i grabbed..i know you remember this, i mean, i imagine you do. And i grabbed the leaves..i tore the leaves off the tree. And you yelled at me? (corrects herself)  You didn’t yell at me. You told me to pick up the leaves. 

Because i hurt the tree? Remember what i’m talking about? I referenced it a couple months ago, to you. 

It was a moment– as you know by now– affected me deeply, of course….because now….now i care. About..all living creatures. Whether they’re humans or animals, or plants…trees..flowers. 

I still have those leaves, though they’re old and quasi-crumpled. And burned.   Cause they got burned by some incense one day. 

 Well, i’m really ..wondering..how you respond to the fact that ..i put up a video of these beautiful flowers, floating in the wind, because i knew they weren’t going to be there forever..because i’m aware of the cycle of life, and within 24 hours..

First, two of them were pressed to death,...and then all four of them were *yanked* off..their vine. By your wife. Or one of her nasty..creons. 

You used to stand for something, to me. And please be sure that i am not going to take this lying down. 

She knows what that did to me. She knows how i feel about flowers. 

She knows what every mark on the tree has done.

She knows what the amaryllis did to me.

She knows every single fucking thing she has done to me. She knows she’s been cyber-stalking me. She knows that she set up….(angry) a profile on Tagged where they buy and sell people as *pets*. 

It took me 72 hours to get it deactivated and cancelled. 

She’s a sociopath, just like the guy said. 

And God knows what she’ll try next. God knows. 

But i will tell you one thing. I am not going to be quiet. Just because you haven’t stood up for me, just because you have your..your tail between your legs, and are acting like, or she has you convinced that nothing has happened…whatever the case may be. 

She is a fucking crazy-ass psycho-sociopath. And everyone knows it.

Hi jamieson.

I’m sitting on my bed. Um,......tired. I have to make 3k in less than 2 weeks. Hopefully i can do it. So far i have 700. Have to do it. It’s important. 

My friend Colbe helped me finally get off of that website. And i’ve been changing my password everywhere.  Again. And..i hadn’t posted on instagram in like 2 weeks, and..the other day i had taken footage of these beautiful flowers moving in the breeze that were just like so..beautiful to me. And you can hear me saying “i have to catch this, because they’re not going to be here forever. Soon they’ll be gone” and i posted it. It was only like 40 seconds or something. 

But it’s like these flowers that really meant something to me. I pass them in Jackson Square with Katie, and I was so,,kind of in love with them. This certain group. These four. 

I’m sure you know where this is going. 

And then i ended up finding this poem about a garden, called 12th House Affliction. 

I came back…i passed them, and they were fine. On wednesday, after i posted it. They were fine. And then i came back less than 12 hours later…and two of them had had the life *squeezed* out of them. 

And i made a mention of it on my insta. And when i walked back to the train…like 6 hours later..all four of them were gone. They were yanked off the vine. Just completely, gone. 

This is Jackson Square. This isn’t Brooklyn. This is Jackson Square,  in Manhattan. 

I…you know this comes back to the amaryllis. Cause she knows what that did to me. She knew what she was creating.

And how every time the bloom died, my heart died. 

And how, with the branches breaking. How it destroyed me. And when those flowers got hurt…there was nothing in my post, it had nothing to do with her or Jakk. 

NOTHING.

That was a violent attack against me, to hurt me.

 There were other flowers there, but it was *those flowers*, those flowers, that i took video of. 

Jamieson we are dealing with a fucking sociopath here. And i have to fight back. I have to. 

This isn’t turn the other cheek. It’s not. This is…this is where i bring out the amaryllis. This is where i start talking. Because this shit is fucked up. 

I don’t know anyone beyond that woman, but i know that that woman is involved, and i know that this shit is beyond deranged. 

And that she should be brought to court.

The Twins At A Glance- The Twins took three of four from the White Sox and have dwindled the Magic Number down to six. The team now heads to Cincinnati to play a decent Reds team. Michael Taylor should be activated sometime during this series. Brock Stewart looked good in a shutout inning for the Saints on Friday. He should get one or two more rehab outings before the team activates him on the homestand. Joey Gallo should be starting a rehab assignment with the Saints this week and Nick Gordon will continue his rehab in St. Paul. Chris Paddack struck out six over four innings and gave up two runs in a rehab start last week. Jorge Alcala has thrown three innings and allowed two runs in three rehab outings. Royce Lewis has been on a tear with five homers and twenty-two RBI in September. Jhoan Duran has five straight scoreless innings. Caleb Thielbar has a scoreless streak of 7 2/3 innings.

The Reds At A Glance- The Reds have had a surprisingly good 2023 season. They are half a game behind the Cubs and Marlins for the final National League Wild-Card spot. They took two of three from the Mets in Queens before returning home for their final homestand of the season. Elly De La Cruz was the talk of baseball when he emerged on the scene in June. He is hitting just .235, but has eleve homers and thirty-six RBI. He also has twenty-nine stole bases and will likely be running wild in this series. The Reds also have to thank the Tyler Mahle trade for their success. Christian Encarnacion-Strand has eight homers and Spencer Steer has been great. Steer has twenty-two homers and eighty-one RBI in his rookie campaign. The Reds system seems to be loaded with lots of talent. The Reds starting pitching has been bad with a 5.40 ERA, which is third-worst in baseball. The Twins will face one of their best starters in Hunter Greene on Wednesday. The Cincinnati bullpen has a 3.90 ERA, which is in the middle of the pack. Sam Moll has been a great addition. He has given up two runs over twenty innings since being traded over from the A's. Alexis Dias has locked down thirty-seven saves.

What To Watch For- The Reds are (16-15) all-time against the Twins. The two sides split four games in 2021. The Twins were in Cincinnati in August of 2021 with both sides winning one game. Kenta Maeda is (2-1) with a 4.62 ERA in five games against the Reds. Hunter Renfroe has two career homers off Maeda. Bailey Ober gave up four runs over 4 1/3 innings in his lone start against Cincinnati. You will see a matchup of the top two picks from the 2017 MLB Draft. Royce Lewis will face Hunter Greene. I remember writing about some of the guys that the Twins could draft. Greene was up there with Kyle Wright and Brendan McKay. The Twins choice Royce Lewis and we're seeing why he was the top pick. This is the last series for the Twins against a playoff contender. The Twins likely won't clinch, but should inch closer before the homestand.

It's been a few weeks.

I can't remember the last time I felt this down for this long.

Probably three years ago.

Part of me feels like I'm making myself feel sad.

That I'm causing myself to suffer by not letting things go.

But the reason I don't want to let things go is because I don't know if I can end up with something similar or better in the future.

Part of me feels like I can, part of me doesn't.

The other reason I don't want to let go is because I'm not ready to close this chapter yet.

I haven't checked in on your page in weeks.

But I know you're still looking at mine.

And I don't understand, since parting ways was YOUR idea.

Why are you still checking on me if you wanted to walk away?

My therapist says it's because you're trying to limit how much of me you give yourself access to.

You watch my stories, but don't text.

My therapist tells me to not put much stock into it.

But to me it feels like window shopping.

You can't say you don't want something at a store and then continue to check on it.

Maybe you're waiting for me to cut you out of my life, so you don't have to.

Maybe you're waiting for me to check on you, so that you know how to move forward.

Either way, I'd appreciate some definitiveness, one way or the other.

I'm somewhat ready to let you go.

I'm not fully ready, but I definitely feel like I'm getting there.

I deserve to bring happiness to myself. I deserve to be kind to myself.

Waiting for you to reach out and racking my brain to figure out why things are the way they are with you now is not bringing me happiness.

I hate myself for how things turn out.

It feels like I'm going to be painted a villain by you now when you talk to other people about me.

And that's not what I wanted. That's now how I want to be talked about.

It sounds selfish, but it's true.

It's out of my control, but it's true.

I don't want you to think of me like that.

That's not who I am. That's not who I wanted to be to you.

But I don't get to control that.

I know I am more than one moment.

But I don't get to be that to you.

And right now, I don't get my shot at redemption.

And THAT'S what makes all of this painful.

I don't get a chance at proving myself.

And I have to live with that, as well as the uncertainty of what my future holds and who's going to be in it.

It seems like people are starting to leave and not enough people are coming to me.

And as someone who is terrible at socializing, this terrifies me.

As much as I like being alone, I don't like letting go of people because I have a hard time getting people to come to me to begin with, much less stay.

I feel like I'm going to go back to 2017-2019.

Where it was just work, gym, baseball, video games, and not meeting new people or socializing in any way.

I don't want that.

But I don't know how to fix that.

And even if I did, idk if that would work.

I have so much anxiety and uncertainty about my future.

Taking it a day at a time doesn't help me.

Because days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months.

I've been there. I've felt it.

It feels like purgatory.

A never ending cycle of the same thing.

Except this time I don't think I'll find a way out.

I don't know anymore.

I know I'm not okay.

Sometimes I am. But sometimes I'm not.

I feel like I'm doing this to myself.

I'm not sure how to fix it, not sure if there's a way of fixing it, not even sure if I want to fix it.

Just want to be left in this Pit of Misery™️ to suffer.

That's the fate of someone who lacks communication skills.

Left to suffer in misery for God knows when for not knowing how to do things better when I didn't know how to.

A terrible fate, but a fate that feels deserved.
