just binged the fallout show and the result was me spending over an hour trying to painstakingly map the insane travel directions of the main characters based on landmarks and mountain/skyline directions despite all three of these things being sets/CGI and therefore completely unreliable.
-starts obviously in santa monica -southeast to LAX area, (filly= fox hill instead of landfill?) then through Inglewood -gulper found at exit 12a Lankershim. Typical NoHo encounter. -back south to super duper via hollywood, which has westin bonaventure building visible behind it and large crater nearby. Crater seems more southwest though, so maybe not the same one in the shot. -only visible crater from griffith is this one, just southeast of observatory. rip echo park. -i found the one truss bridge in LA over the river and it's there by downtown. possible in this universe there are more train bridges, though. -crossed to area with hospital-- USC Health labs are in this area, could be Hawthorne facility and vault 4 location in this universe. -tracks followed south to shady sands. I do not remember why they went this way but by skyline, mountains, redcars and obscurity from griffith shady sands HAS to be LA historic district -kpss radio at "base of Hollywood Hills", chose area that was just a small mound.
so, approximately the same amount of erratic back-and-forth travel as an actual bethesda game. God bless.
gamers who want to lecture or otherwise bitch about the shady sands location retcon in my activity, please check this out first.

oh god
the new historical American Girl dolls are from Seattle circa 1999
h e l p m e
One of them's apparently worried about the Y2K bug. I have STORIES about working for an internet company in Seattle in 1999, preparing for the Y2K bug. I was on the phone with the White House twice that year with the government's Y2K czar -- yes, that was a real position; he's quoted in this retrospective (which needs to learn the difference between the 20th and 21st centuries, but oh well) -- about said bug. The whole tech production team at the news site I was working for made joking references all year to the winds of fire that were going to destroy all of civilization. (We did not actually expect the winds of fire.) And then I spent NYE very, very bored,* because Pacific time was pretty much the last time zone of significant population to turn over the clocks, and we knew the rest of the planet had been fine, so I spent the night at the Westin building (this place, still a big internet hub) watching a coworker drink brandy and not offer me any while we poked around the web looking for anything that had broken anywhere -- we didn't find much -- and the engineers who had nothing else to do watched Aliens on the big-screen TV.
I'm not sure how you could encapsulate all of that in a collectible doll set, but now I want Mattel to goddamn try.
--
*That said, most of the city was a bit more bored than usual, because there'd been a terrorist threat and the planned New Year's festivities in downtown Seattle got largely shut down. Also a true story. As that article says, we got pretty seriously razzed for being paranoid. As it turned out, the guy they caught at the border who sparked the fears of an attack later confessed to being part of a planned attack against LAX. And then we all remember what happened in 2001, sooooo.......

Sabbatical Essay #Day 16: Poolside at Westin LAX
We flew back to LAX safely (after another lay over at Mexico City).  We had Chinese food by the airport and I checked into the Westin by the airport.   I was moving on the my second part of sabbatical trip but I was to return to LA before going back home so Laura took some of my stuff home with her that I won’t be needing while I camp in the wild Alaska.
Tumblr media
Then I had a super relaxing day at the hotel, by the pool.
Ahhhh how I miss those kind of days.
Tumblr media
This was before the movie Crazy Rich Asians came out.  So I dream of future vacation where I’d be sitting by the pool under California sky and be all lazy. (Even though I always get too excited to get lazy when I travel)

All I’m saying is….
….I’m just saying. We went out for a quick bite and brought his royal high Princess Jack.
Let’s see, I had too:
Find place with good beer
Make sure the weather cooperates because we needed to be outside
Coordinate with a plant based food option
Drive us all there, assess the situation
Get a table
Start a tab, yes even needing her ID (she’s in her 50’s for fuck’s sake)
Order beers that she’d like
Order food
Pick up food at the food truck
Deliver said food to the table through a gauntlet of dogs
Get another round
Bus my own table
Get beer to go (for home)
Pay the tab
Load him back into the car
Drive home —-errr make another stop on the way home
She got a text from her adult niece that is flying through Denver tonight. Her flight hasn’t left LAX and she might be stranded in Denver. She’s an adult. like 49 years old or something.
So she wanted to stop and get ice cream.
She also decided to buy a little something to eat in case said niece does make it out of LAX and gets stranded in DEN.
She had two fucking things to do.
She left the ice cream at the check out lane at the store.
I say fuck it, have her shell out the $400 at night at the Westin at DEN. Or have her take a shuttle to any of the other hotels a stone’s throw from the airport.
Sadly, she’s flying United - so there’s no way I can help her with points or a hotel or anything.

A short list of things that have made me want to cry today:
- saying goodbye to @styloff and @justharried
- the absolute lack of driveway management at the Westin LAX
- realizing I’ll never have access to the private terminal at LAX
- having a chatty lyft driver and getting so discombobulated I accidentally hugged her goodbye as if she were M or C
- (no security line at lax for the first time in my life!)
- the girl at the airport bar wearing merch from last night how did I drop the ball on getting merch??
- realizing I won’t get to see Harry again for four looooong months 😭😭😭😭

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico #2
ロスの1日はホテルのジムでトレーニングして、Bottega Louieで食事をとり、翌日再びLAXからアラスカ航空でメキシコ・プエルトバヤルタに向かいました。
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
プエルトバヤルタの空港は小さく、数十分で入国審査を終え、予約していたホテル、The Westin Resort and Spa Puerto Vallarta
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

September 5, 2019
We woke up around 8 on Thursday. Well, Haley and I did. Mom and Dad got up at 6:30, Dad to work out, and Mom because she couldn’t fall back asleep. Haley took a shower and I lazed around a bit. I finished my packing from the night before and did my make up. We wanted to leave by 9:30 to walk to the walking tour we were taking at 10, but we were running behind with checking out and getting our bags bellhopped. That’s okay, we took a Lyft instead, to the Wrigley Building.
The walking tour was put on by a guy named Paul. He was about Dad’s age and they got along well. He told us some more stuff about architecture, that we added to our knowledge from the river tour the day before. The tour was two hours long and the best part was finally making to to Millennium Park! It a two mile long park, just off Lake Michigan. We learned about how much it took to get the park started, legally, and finally got to see “The Bean”! The Bean is actually called Cloud Gate, but it really looked like a bean! It’s really cool how you can see a huge reflection of the city. We walked the park and saw a really cool amphitheater. Chicago is a really well designed city. Mom and Dad were really surprised at how large it is, too! Paul gave us a great tour! I love doing walking tours. Dad tipped him $50 for the four of us, since the tour itself is free, so thank you Dad! A crazy thing happened, Haley and Dad thought they saw Mike Ditka! We went up to him and asked, but it was a lookalike. Haley even had Ashley on FaceTime, in case it was the real guy!
Originally we were going to go to the Field Museum after that, but Haley had to change her flight plans. She was going to take a 6:30 flight directly to LAX, but it was getting pretty full, so she had to change to a 4:00 flight, with a layover in Portland. So, we decided to grab lunch and spend the last hour together. Also, we hadn’t eaten today yet, woops!! Haley looked up a place called Exqueckers, which was actually famous. Al Capone used to sit in the booth that we were seated at! Haley and I shared some hummus and a small, thin crust pizza. It was pretty tasty! Dad had a bacon burger and Mom had some yummy fried shrimp.
Before we knew it, it was time to put Haley in a Lyft. We ordered one for her to go to the Westin and grab her bags, then directly to the airport. It’s always sad to see her go, but she’ll actually be back on Camano Island in a few weeks for a wedding, so I’ll see her soon. Mom, Dad, and I walked back to Michigan Avenue and went into a couple shops. We walked back to the hotel, and then it was time for us to call our Lyft. The bellhop got our bags and even gave us some water bottles for the road. The service is amazing!
Haley was able to get on her flight to Portland, right before we got to the airport. We had a really awesome Lyft driver. Dad talked to him the whole time about sports. He was from Jordan! We actually had really nice Lyft drivers all week. One was a medical student, one was from Turkey. We didn’t have to check our bags, and somehow I found a security line with like three people in it! We got through security within 15 minutes of being dropped off, woo. We found our gate, G4, which Haley’s plane was still parked at. What a coincidence! Mom and I got Starbucks, then the three of us just hung out for about an hour before boarding. We were seated in row 20. I slept for about the first hour of the flight. I listened to music and wrote. The flight from Chicago to Seattle was about four hours. It was pretty uneventful. Dad read some magazines and Mom napped and watched some of A Star Is Born.
Before I knew it, we landed in Seattle! It was actually a nice landing at sunset. We disembarked the plane, hopped on our shuttle to the parking garage. Dad paid for my car to be parked there, which was super nice! Mom and Dad headed home, whereas I drove to Belltown to get Tara’s keys from her at work. She was letting me stay the night, since I was picking up Ingvar from SeaTac the next morning at 5am. Thank you, Tara! It was nice to see her, but I was pretty pooped, so I didn’t hang around. It took me a while to find parking near her place, but once I did, I brought my stuff in. I lounged around a bit, confirmed that Ingvar was making his flight, then went to bed around 10, trying to get some sleep before heading back to the airport. Chicago was so fun, thanks for the family trip, Dad! :]
