What is Nutrition: Part 1: Carbs
First up, some quick notes: there are 2 main things spoken about in nutrition: macronutrients and micronutrients.
Micronutrients are minerals and vitamins (plant colours are linked to what micros are in them, like green = vitamin K and iron, orange = vitamin a, purpler = antioxidants, red = vitamin c). The kind of stuff you get in little gummy pills, but are way better naturally (still, take what you can get my dudes).
Macros are called this because while they're just as important as micros, they're needed in much higher doses. While there's heaps of micros, there are only 3 macros: carbs, fats and proteins.
What Are Carbohydrates:
Greatest energy source
Gives us glucose for energy, or stores as glycogen
Glucose is used for “strenuous exercise”and aids in concentration
Tryptophan (amino acid found in protein) gets turned into serotonin (mood stabilizing hormone) by carbs converting them. That’s why bread and carbs make you feel good
No research to say extra carbs and tryptophan gives higher than average/better mood, but there is research saying lower levels equals lower mood??
Serotonin then gets converted to melatonin (circadian rhythm)
If you're not eating carbs, and you feel like shit, this is why (bad sleep and lack of serotonin)
SIDE NOTE: if you feel too scared to have carbs like bread and potatoes, because of the calories, rasperberries are really low calorie, and high in carbs and fibre (15g carbs in 125g punnet, for only 66 calories)
Types of carbs and breakdown:
There are 2 types of carbs: complex or simple. Simple can be stuff like lollies--not the best, simple sugars. Complex is more fibre and nutrients, it takes longer to digest
Monosaccharides are single molecule sugars
Disaccharides are 2 monosaccharides put together. Both mono. and dis. are simple carbs
Polysaccharides are complex carbs (3x mono. or more)
There the starchy carbs (simple) and less starchy (complex).
Quick notes of digestion:
Complex carbs get broken into simple ones in the small intestine
Most carbs are full of fibre, which is any complex that can’t be broken down in the small intestines. It goes to the large intestine and makes “highly useful” short-chain fatty acids and lines/looks after the gut. (So, detoxing this shit can be bad. You need the lining)
Basically, yah need fibre. High fibre carbs are the most nutritious ones, and if you're constipated, chances are you need more fibre (still do not over-do it, look after yourselves <3)
Back to types of carbs:
Refined carbs (stuff like flour and white bread) are good for short term energy but less nutritious. Complex carbs like fruit and veg release energy more slowly but have more vitamins?
Simple carbs go to the bloodstream faster than complex (giving a fast boost in energy)
GI and GL:
GI = Glycaemic Index
GI is a measure of how fast the carbs make your blood sugar (glucose) rise
Higher GI, faster impact
GL = glycaemic load
GL is a measure of GI AND carbs in the food
So watermelon has a higher GI than pasta, but pasta has more carbs, so it has a higher GL.

Why Is Nutrition So Important?

A healthy diet is crucial to allow your body to function effectively and remain healthy. Six kinds of nutrients make up food. These nutrients include macronutrients, protein, carbohydrates as well as fats and micronutrients which include minerals and vitamins. It can be challenging to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle, lose weight, and live a happy life if your diet isn't the right combination.
If you have read any of my articles, you will see how I place such a big focus on the 3 macronutrients since they are the basis of your fitness or weight loss goals! In this regard I'll give you a brief description of the six classes of nutrients and discuss why they are essential for a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
1. Protein
2. Carbohydrates
3. Fats
4. Vitamins
5. Minerals
6. Water
Good nutrition is essential for building muscle.
Proteins break down in your body into amino acids after you eat protein-rich foods. These amino acids are then used to build and repair any muscles. This is great news for those who train or are physically active. This will allow you to recover faster than if protein is not consumed. Protein is a crucial component of every tissue within the body. It is essential to ensure you are getting sufficient protein from your diet. Your immune and nervous system also depend on protein.
Good Nutrition Provides Energy
When talking about nutrition and our bodies my preferred analogy is the racecar. To maintain your car's optimal performance, it is essential to maintain it with regular fuel, change the oil frequently and get new tires. You'll eventually be devalued in your body when you fail to do these things. But, if the correct actions are taken and followed, you'll be on your way to a healthier lifestyle and reaping the rewards that come with this.
Carbohydrates are a food that gives you energy to get through the day. Glycogen is a key ingredient to maintain the energy levels of your day. After you consume carbs, the pancreas produces the hormone insulin. Insulin assists in allowing the carbohydrates to be stored in the muscles, or in fat. The body stores carbohydrates that are also known as glycogen. Glycogen (stored carbohydrates) is essential to be present in your body prior to training. These will provide energy and assist in losing more fat in a shorter time.
Good Nutrition and Fats?
One of the most popular diet myths is that fats cause you to gain weight. In the first place that, without fats, you'll not be able to survive. They are one of three macronutrients. The stored fats are the main source of energy.
Fats are a source of 9 calories per gram. They keep your body warm during colder seasons. They lubricate joints, which gives you more flexibility and mobility in your exercise routine. Fats are also a dwelling spot for fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. These vitamins are stored within our body's fat , and may be toxic if a large amount is consumed.
Most people don't know what the distinction is between monounsaturated, saturated and polyunsaturated oils. This is a typical misconception that I see. Take a look at my Truth About Fats Article for additional information.
Vitamins and Minerals
Minerals and vitamins are essential minerals that our bodies require to function properly but also allow chemical reactions to happen in a quicker rate. They are required just like the 3 macronutrients, but only in small quantities. Vitamin B complex is beneficial for health because they reduce carbs, which will provide you with energy. Although vitamins and minerals are available from certain foods, they are often not sufficient to support the healthy lifestyle and weight loss.
Don't Forget About Your Water
The people who are overweight or unhealthy don't drink sufficient fluids. This is among the biggest problems I see. They substitute water for sugary sodas, or other drinks that are high in sugar. Around 65% of our bodies are composed of water. It is essential for our bodies to live. Water is as vital as a nutritious diet. It also acts as a cleanse and detox your body.

Fats
Types: The label will break down fat into total fat, saturated fat, and trans fat. Sometimes, you'll also see monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats listed.
Why It Matters: Not all fats are bad. While trans fats and excessive saturated fats can raise your risk of heart disease, unsaturated fats are beneficial for your heart.
Tips for Consumers: Aim to limit saturated and trans fat intake. Focus on healthy fats from sources like fish, nuts, and olive oil.
Carbohydrates
Types: Carbs are often broken down into total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and sugars.
Why It Matters: Carbs are your body’s main source of energy. However, too much sugar can lead to weight gain and other health issues, while fiber is crucial for digestive health.

So at CVS older asian lady purchasing different types of over the counter pharmaceuticals. With c v s system they can track your purchases and it alerts you automatically to any adverse possible drug interactions. This means for any pharmaceuticals. They sell any over-the-counter medication or supplements. This also includes food purchases. So I am on diabetic medication and they can alert me if I make a food purchase that may adversely interact with my diabetic medication. Yes so I buy some coca-cola. And the system would alert me that the high sugar's might cause Elevate it blood sugar levels. Then in the recommendation, it says you should just drink 6 oz over a 12 hour period. So it gives me a consumption recommendation for that product and it shows me an alternative to that product like drinking coke zero. Recommending that I go to an alternative product by Coca-Cola Coke 0.
So I worry about these older individuals. Purchasing stuff and the interactions can cause adverse effects. Like this elderly asian lady at this store. Is purchasing a lot of over the counter pharmaceuticals but they might not work together well.... Here's a list of all drug interaction databases.
So here is a database that does pharmaceutical and nutrition interaction. They should do all supplements as twelve and nutrition interaction. So it can alert you to portion size.Recommendations food or vitamin or pharmaceutical supplementation. Also Recommending that you avoid taking them together and wait 2 to 3 hours as an example.

This is a book I would like to add to my cookbook library and hope to do so in the future even though living where I do would mean not having access to all of the ingredients that would be more common in the West.
