I would like to share what I would like to call a âSchrodingerâs Crack Theoryâ regarding Ranbooâs other half. What I mean is I am entirely claiming this is a crack theory, unless others find it to make sense.
Anyways, I was listening to Lemon Demon on my own outside of a Ranboo stream for the first time, and I made some interesting connections.
I recall during one stream that Ranboo had said that somehow nobody seems to be guessing his other half correctly, even though he has dropped hints about it before. He said he had only seen maybe one person guess correctly. Well, I was listening to Cabinet Man (a song which Ranboo has cited as being his favorite at some point), which tells a story about some sort of machine hybrid;
âIâm half human, and half machineâ
What if the hint wasnât necessarily very obvious in the lore itself, but within the music Ranboo plays during streams the most often? It would make a lot of sense for Ranboo to take character inspiration from the stories told by one of his favorite musical artists.
If you assume that Ranboo is half enderman, half machine/robot/android, some things actually start to make a lot of sense in the narrative.
Ranboo has very poor memory, and he forgets and remembers in a very odd pattern. As far as we know in the lore, Ranboo does not know what his other half is. Perhaps whoever made Ranboo or who is currently controlling Ranboo is purposely wiping his mechanically stored memory in order to easily control him and keep him unaware of his own purpose. It would also put into perspective why Ranboo is easily influenced by others despite his own desires, because following orders is a part of his programming. Ranbooâs âenderwalk stateâ can also be attributed to some sort of autopilot function that can be activated or deactivated, and in this state Ranboo cannot store the memory of what he does.
Based on current evidence I would say Dream would be the one controlling Ranboo, though whether he created him or not is unclear. Dream would be able to mechanically insert himself into Ranbooâs mind with ease, and Ranboo would simply believe he isnât real because he doesnât know about his robot half. For the most part, however, Ranboo seems to be a project that is slowly becoming self aware, and is trying to fight back against his programmed instincts. He feels and wants and worries just like any other person, but his lack of control over his own mind keeps him at bay.
Considering the ridiculous red stone mechanisms that get made on the server as is, the talks about phones and cars (as non-serious as they usually are), and Tubbo making LITERAL NUCLEAR BOMBS, I think that Ranboo being part machine isnât as far-fetched as it initially seems.
Bonus thoughts:
Ranboo picks up and puts down grass blocks as some sort of recalibration method.
Cabinet Man also contains the lyric âNow Iâm in a box for safekeepingâ. This makes me think of how Ranboo builds boxed-in rooms to comfort himself, like the panic room and the comfort room. I just thought that was neat.

Last Monday of the Week: 2021-03-01
First Monday of the Month. My boss just quit at work which means I'm now the only formally trained engineer left who has any particular specialization in embedded systems. This week is going to be a doozy.
I also wrote a Very Long set of media updates because Iâve been consuming some stuff that makes me think a lot. Never a good sign.
Listening: I spent all of Saturday playing Minecraft after talking with some friends about it during the week on IRC. Practicing what I preach with regards to my Large Biome Supermacy policy, which does involve a lot of walking. Hence, I started catching up on The Adventure Zone: Graduation again, I'm like ten episodes behind.
https://maximumfun.org/episodes/adventure-zone/the-adventure-zone-graduation-ep-32-by-a-haircut/
I don't really enjoy Travis' DM'ing style. It's very loose and he has a tendency to let players run wild without much structure which is a tricky thing to handle. He does a lot of worldbuilding and character design but doesn't seem to plan much in the way of arcs. That pays off sometimes (returning to the school to realize they broke a promise they made a few sessions earlier and had to deal with consequences, for example) and when it does, itâs really good, but it's finnicky. I know DM's who can do that, but, well, actually I know One Single DM who can do that well and she's absurdly smart.
Reading: Still on Worm, I just got past chapter 8 or so now. It lives in my phone browser so I've mostly been reading it whenever I get some spare time, which is a good sign. If a book doesn't grab me I need to really settle down in a quiet space to avoid getting distracted, but I can read Worm while someone else is on the phone in the same room.
It is a story with a lot of very well-conveyed feelings and events. It's very easy to imagine yourself in it. Characters actually act like they care about what they're doing, I feel like writing this took a lot of care to keep everyone on model.
There's also a certain care given to the superpowers that you'd usually only see in forum posts arguing about an actual superhero story. Everyone always likes to argue about how far you can push a superpower: can you use teleporting to fly? What prevents a speedster from catching fire in the air? Where does the energy for a  pyrokinetic ability come from? Worm takes these and runs with them as a way to make absolutely any fight become a series of gambits relying on whether a power can or cannot be used to perform some high-stakes trick.
The world certainly has some underpinning contrivances to explain why no one gets killed very often but I've always considered nitpicking the base contrivances of a setting silly, because that's precisely what they are: contrived, in order to allow the rest of the story to flow from there. Like arguing about Omegaâs abilities in the famous thought experi-*I am dragged off stage by the ratblr police for making a by now extremely stale joke*
Watching: I came and edited this section in like an hour before this posts because I keep on forgetting to put it in. I donât really like watching TV and with my parents stuck at home in Pandemic Times itâs how they pass the time.
I did finish S3 of the Good Place. Itâs very funny. Iâm glad Iâm watching it and Iâm going to have to go find S4 because ZA Netflix doesnât have it for whatever reason. It feels a little like it was written by Phillip Pullman if Phillip Pullman was a comedy TV writer.
I also really enjoyed the PBS Spacetime video about how time causes gravity. Love when an explanation of concepts is good enough that you drawn the conclusion on your own.
youtube
Playing: Visual Novel Hell plus Minecraft.
I spent approximately seven hours in Minecraft over two days. I tend to hop in and out of games for 1-2 hours at a time but there's a handful that can suck me in for an entire day. Minecraft, Warframe, Horizon Zero Dawn, Night in the Woods. Bastion, to a lesser extent. I end up avoiding them because I don't like loosing entire days, but I wasn't really planning on doing anything this weekend anyways.
Minecraft was mostly a long-ass trek to find a saddle, because as previously mentioned, I enjoy playing it with Large Biomes for the sense of scale.
I also completed Act 3 of Psycholonials and Eliza.
Psycholonials is odd. It is doing the thing that Hussie does where it dances around what's ostensibly the story to carry out the actual story. You get used to the trope after your first encounter but it still makes you wonder when the other shoe will drop, and of course, there's no reason it ever has to. The story may remain in suspended animation behind the every growing mess of narrative red tape tying the B-plot together.
Stories about Social Media have no well established norms. I think I might pick up Feed by M. T. Anderson and also perhaps Hank Green's books sometime. See what context they set that in.
Eliza is frustrating to me. It's a game for programmers, by programmers, about programmers. I'm friends with a lot of Capital P Programmers, the types who go to university and get sniped for developer positions at Seattle or Silicon Valley tech companies and who make great and terrible things and then warn you about the deep problems that underpin the slowly rolling ball of venture capital and bloated technology that is the tech industry. But at the same time, it makes me feel like I've burnt out on that conceptually before I even went in. Itâs a whole other world that Iâm familiar with but very distant from. In fact, thatâs kinda how I feel about Psycholonials too. Iâm familiar with the social media rat race but I also donât go there. Parallels!
My cousins (who are halfway to Capital P Programmers, only so much you can do halfway around the world from silicon valley) warned me not to go into CS, because it would bore me, and that's a non-trivial part of why I'm in Engineering. They gave the same advice about Biology and Physics, without that I may have ended up in Microbiology. itâs not my domain, but because of how Engineering is going, you end up a lot closer to programmers than you think. I found out the other day that most of the software developers on my team have no formal tertiary qualifications, which is accepted in CS but of course, right out when it comes to engineering. Itâs a whole other world that I kinda expected to skip around. I might go into this another time, since this post is already getting long.
Making: I havenât done any engineering scicomm posts on here in a while so I started a few blank drafts and finally got one off the ground. With some luck Iâll have that ready this week. Whatâs it about? Not saying! It might change!
Iâve been doing layout for a custom keyboard, I need to call a laser cutting place and find out what their kerf requirements are so I can adjust the path accordingly. Wouldnât do to burn a couple hundred rand on an oversized part, Iâm paying for this, not my employer like the other times Iâve done laser cutting, so Iâm probably not going to spring for getting one of their designers to check my design. At some point I should CAD up a chassis, but at the same time I might just buy some wood and go ham with a router once I get the plates cut.
Computers Slot: I got WeeChat set up properly on my desktop, which technically was just a matter of getting my SSH keys moved over. Itâs taking me forever to move in to Cinnabar, in part because Stibnite lost her boot partition and I havenât bothered to fix it.
So hereâs a pitch for WeeChat as a good quality Terminal UI IRC Client. Many of my closest friends live there and it has a good set of tools to help me keep in touch.
WeeChat is very configurable but with perfectly sane defaults, I didnât configure it for years. The UI is smarter and less arcane than something like irssi, and if you enable mouse support it can be downright modern. Running it remotely like this limits some features but as long as you donât mind jumping through a few hoops to do filesharing, IRC is really great like this.
One of the big ones is the ability to do that double-pane thing, I can keep an eye on two channels at once (really as many as I can cram on my screen, but usually two) which is great when you want to browse channels while talking in your home channel.
It also has a good array of remote access tools, from what Iâm running up there, just weechat running on my server inside tmux connected over mosh for low-latency SSH, to weechat-relay, a relay protocol built in to weechat. At the moment relay only supports android phones and the glowingbear web client, but Iâve never really looked around since both of those cover all my needs. Easily one of the best ways to get IRC on a modern mobile device, barring maybe IRCCloud.

Frequently Asked Questions
Important Info: This is an 18+ event. This is an all ships event. Yes, we have a Discord server. No, you arenât required to join, but you can if you want to. The AO3 collection can be found here. The primary relationship for your fill must be a poly relationship. Cheating does not count as a poly relationship.
Dates: Posting for the bingo runs from January 1 - September 30.
There will be a new push for sign ups every 3 months. You will have 3 weeks to sign up during each push, but the due date will remain September 30 for all cards issued during these times!
Sign up for a card in December and post anywhere from January - September. Sign up for a card in March and post anywhere from March - September. Sign up for a card in June and post anywhere from June - September.
You will have 3 weeks in December, March, and June to sign up for a bingo card. All fills for Round One are due by the end of September.
Special note: If you finish a bingo/blackout and would like another card to work on, that can be requested at any time.
Free space is replaced with a Constellation! Each card will have an image in the center called a Constellation. These will be a collection of dots with lines connecting those dots in various ways. These represent how a poly relationship could function: dots indicating different people and lines indicating that those two individuals are in a relationship. Relationships can be romantic, platonic, or kink based. For further questions about this image prompt, please see âprompt explanationâ below.
Prompts Prompts are there for inspiration. They can be followed literally or figuratively. You can adhere to a trope, subvert it, or take it in a new direction. You can look up a definition for a word, or guess at the definition and see what you can create. Prompts can be taken as realistic, interpretive, or just plain weird. Prompts can be at the forefront of the work, in the background, or just the starting point of inspiration.
What does this prompt mean? Whatever you want it to mean. Prompts are there for inspiration.
I donât understand this prompt. You can Google it or you can make something up and have fun with it. Prompts are there for inspiration.
My prompt is a quote. Is it required that a character say that? No, it can be whatever you want: the title of the fic, the background words in an art piece, the overall concept of a piece, a song list where the titles spell out the quote, and so on. Get creative if you want to! Or just have a character say the quote if you want to! Prompts are there for inspiration.
I picked Hard Mode⊠Why would you make ___ a prompt? Shhh, donât ask questions. Just go with it. We believe in you.
Posting:
What are the event dates? Posting begins January 1, 2020, and the event runs until September 30, 2020. You may post fills any time during this period. We will have an Ao3 collection to add your works to and if you share them on Twitter or Tumblr, please tag us (@marvelpolyshipbingo) to make sure we see your post.
When do I get my card? A unique Bingo Card will be issued within one week of sign-up. If you do not receive a card within 1 week of signing up for a phase, please contact the mod(s) at [email protected] - You may request up to 4 squares changed, and the request must be within a week.Â
Can I share my card? Yes! You can share your card on any of your social media, with your friends, or in your servers.
Can I edit my card to cross off my fills? Yes! Feel free to get creative with that and post updates on any of your social media, with your friends, or in your servers.
What happens if I donât get a bingo? Nothing! This is a low-pressure event meant for encouraging new poly works. If you donât manage to complete anything or make a bingo, then nothing bad happens. You can just try, try again (but only if you want to!).
What counts as a bingo? Bingos are any of the following: Rows, diagonals, columns, and/or four corners and the center. If you complete all the squares on your card, you have a blackout! Once you complete a bingo, you may request another one if you would like. You can do this as many times as you would like.
Tell me about blackouts. A blackout is when you fill every square on your card with a unique fill. You are not required to get a blackout in order to request a new card. Once you receive a new card, your previous card is retired from this event, but you can still use the prompts as inspiration if you would like (but they will no longer count as a fill). You cannot combine prompts in order to fill them faster. Each prompt must have its own fill.
What counts as a fill? Each fill must be completed and not posted behind a pay-wall. You can use one square per chapter of a multi-chapter fic if you would like, but each chapter must be a completed fill. If you are creating using other mediums, then we ask each fill be its own post, but they can, of course, be linked together - 250 is the word count minimum. - Art is any completed piece.   - Complete is defined as having all the necessary or appropriate parts. Art can be physical or digital and must be your own work. Art can include but is not limited to: sketch, line art, full render images, comic strips, 3D animation, 2D animation, fanvids (including music videos and trailers), photomanips, cell drawings, painting in all forms, sculptures, crafts, full cosplay photography, refracted light âpaintingâ, wood carvings, ice sculptures, a full scale replica of Stark Tower in toothpicks, etc. - Mood boards are a minimum of 9 pictures. - Playlists need a minimum of ten songs. - Podfics MUST have the ownerâs consent and have it linked on AO3. Additionally, the fic being read must have a minimum of 250 words. - Other creations, ask us and we will let you know whatâs considered a fill! - Collaborations are allowed and we donât have any additional requirements for such. - Cross-posting for other events is fine and we donât have any additional requirements for such.
What about cheating? Cheating does not count as poly for this event. For this, the minimum is three people actively and knowingly in a relationship with each other. That said, creations involving cheating are allowed. The cheating just needs to be outside the relationship.   Examples:   - A&B together with C seeing B behind Aâs back- NOT poly.   - A&B together, C&B together with Aâs knowledge- poly.   - A&B&C all together - poly
Badges: - Same Hat - Full card all one ship - Different Hat - Full card with no repeat ships - Captain on Deck - First to post a ship with your posting format - What A Prize - Bingo - Dark in Here - Blackout - A Rare Gem - if your ship has 2-50 creations within the tag - Wrong Turn - 13 fills with no bingo - Over My Head - bingo using kink prompts but fills involve no sexual activity - Citizens of Asgard - bingo using only Asgardian characters - Cerebro - bingo using only X-Men characters - S.H.I.E.L.D - bingo using only MCU characters (including TV series)Â - Inked - bingo using comic verses only - Time Lord - blackout using only AUs and/or crossovers - Literary - blackout using only fic fills - Artistic - blackout using only digital or traditional art - Crafty - blackout using only craft fills - Producer - blackout using only media fills - Stark Tower banner and badge - If you actually build a full scale replica of Stark Tower using toothpicks
Admin Selected Specialty Badges: - Ender - âRocket Shipâ - Ships with Rocket - Vixen - âLocked Upâ - A full bingo with smut but no orgasm for at least one person involved - Katie - âToo Much Teaâ - Creating a fill that is off the wall for the prompt - Nim - âEt Tu Brute?â - Historical era fill
A couple helpful links:Â More than Two Terms: Their Glossary of Terms!
FAQs:
1. Are all ships allowed? Â Yes! Just remember: the minimum is three people actively and knowingly in a relationship with each other. These people can be of any gender (or lack of gender â we wonât stop you from writing Groot).
2. Will we be able to fill cards with more than one ship or choose just one for the card? You can fill it out with whatever you want! But we will have badges for ship-specific achievements as well.Â
3. Does a symbiote count as part of a ship? So long as the symbiote in question is capable of having an independent personality while with its host and is actively a part of the relationship, then yes. (Remember, not all symbiotes are as developed in personality as Venom and Carnage.)
4. Do androids/life model decoys/intelligent fauna count as part of a ship? - So long as they are capable of having an independent personality, have some form of communication, and you can sell it, then yes.
5. Can I use MCU/Sony/comics/cartoons/alternate-earth canon? Yes! You can use any canon form, or mixed canon.
6. Does selfcest count as part of a ship? Yes, so long as the duplicate/s remains as a consistent part of the relationship.
7. Can I do a crossover? Yes, so long as the majority of the primary relationship contains Marvel characters.
8. Can I use Original Characters? Yes, so long as the majority of the primary relationship contains Marvel characters.
9. Can I collab with someone? Collaborations are allowed and we donât have any additional requirements for such.
10. Iâm in multiple bingos. Can I cross-post if it fulfills the requirements of both bingos? Yes. Cross-posting for other events is fine and we donât have any additional requirements for such.
11. Cheating doesnât count as poly, but cheating is a prompt! A minimum of three people that are actively and knowingly in a relationship counts as poly for this bingo. If your work starts with cheating but there is a significant amount where all involved are in a relationship, then that is allowed. If someone or multiple people within a relationship are cheating outside of the relationship, then that is allowed.

Why is a Cell Phone VPN Important for Secure Smartphone Browsing?
âWhy use a cell phone VPN service?â is what people ask after friends and relatives say they use them. We answer your queries such as: âShould I be using a VPN on my phone?â
We explain why a VPN can be important and how can it help you avoid tracking and be more secure when browsing on your phone?
youtube
What Does a Cell Phone VPN Do?
The VPN is a virtual private network which routes your internet traffic through a server into the country in which the server is located.
It is secure because of the encryption which scrambles up the data and makes it unreadable by anyone but you.
Increasingly people who wish to browse without being tracked and later followed by a myriad of ads and potential tracking software are buying access to these servers.
It is hoped that most nations will eventually legislate against everyone from big businesses to criminal gangs to introduce laws against data retention for advertising and nefarious spying.
But, until then with virtually no restrictions upon data retention by law in most countries, the VPN can be seen as a way to take personal action to stop it for the VPN user.
When using a VPN the data is erased when you leave that country (by ending that session).
What this means is, your web activities are encrypted and those bots which are set up online to watch you lose contact with you.
They get to see a different IP address for each session when using a public VPN service whilst you are using the VPN.
There is no way they can connect the next session with any other, and you remain unknown to the software that watches us all while online.
What VPN you sign up and pay for is a highly personal choice. Personally, I would recommend Tunnelbear. Tunnelbear is available on Android, iPhone and Blackberry devices. And for Blackberry it is available as a dedicated app called Signal.
Why is a Cell Phone VPN Important?
The benefit of using a VPN on your cellphone is your privacy.
There are other incidental benefits because it may be a way to get around geoblocking. Geoblocking is the increasing practice of many websites, especially in the US to block visitors from for example Europe.
This happens when the lawyers for a company point out that the laws in another (such as Europe) are complicated and largely untested in the courts, to the website managers.
As advertisers usually only target their sales in the home nation, these websites find that they can readily block all visitors from abroad without reducing their advertising income.
Another advantage of using a VPN on your can be is speed. Most VPN servers are based in the U.S. and are often faster than some European ones. This means you can get speeds of around 1 megabit per second, compared to around 10 Mbps on a European server.
So if you are looking for a personal VPN, if youâre looking for a fast VPN, if youâre looking for anonymity and privacy and if youâre looking for speed, look no further.
A personal VPN is something that you can get by clicking on a link to a VPN service provider, and following the instructions.
This is something that you do yourself but because the VPN is not a cloud-based app, you can stop it anytime you like. Also, you can stop it whenever you like.
If you are looking for a fast VPN that offers high quality, there are many high-quality VPNs you can choose from.
How do I select a VPN?
Most personal VPNs that youâll find on the market today are based on a VPN Protocol. This type of VPN encrypts the IP addresses.
This makes it appear that the person youâre connected to is located in another country and maybe that person is actually located in your own country.
When you sign up with a personal cell phone VPN, it will ask for your country of residence and will use that as a basis for where your IP address will be located.
The server-level service gives you the benefits of anonymity and security.
The encryption is done at the server level and you wonât have to worry about your traffic being tracked, read and intercepted.
That being said, this type of VPN may not be the best for a good internet speed.
The encryption can be lead to spotty connections and you may sometimes fail to get the speeds you desire.
When that happens, it is usually because your connection is being handled by a connection thatâs on a slower speed tier.
Avoid Using Free Cell phone VPNs
Slow connections are almost inevitable when you use a free cell phone VPN, free services are not a reliable way to use a VPN.
However, if youâre looking for a VPN and donât mind paying for a service that is fast and convenient, there are some fast personal VPNs you can consider.
It is important to know that, as a matter of fact, it is really necessary to have a fast VPN that offers high quality and that is convenient.
Therefore, when youâre looking for the fastest VPN that offers high quality, it is preferable that you use a VPN that has a great reputation.
Also, it is preferable to use a VPN that does not have a connection that stops for random periods of time.
If your service provides speed in addition to quality, convenience, and security, youâre going to get the level of service we all want and expect nowadays online.
The benefit to using a VPN is that youâre shielded from prying eyes.
Itâs generally believed that this can help keep you safer in your dealings with people who are interested in your business.
However, there are a few issues to consider before you jump into a VPN service. Some of these can be overcome. Others are a bit more difficult.
What Should I Expect When Using a VPN?
First, letâs talk about what youâre going to get. When you sign up for a paid VPN service, generally youâre going to get access to a fast server.
But, it may not always be fast everywhere globally.
It depends on the location that the Cell Phone VPN will use for encryption and transmission of your data.
This means that it will host a VPN server.
The best VPN service providers usually offer their clients the option of choosing which server they want. But the downside is that many locations can themselves have poor internet speeds.
This is unavoidable because some locations just donât have a very good internet infrastructure.
One such location has been for example Africa where many states experience a huge cell phone browsing demand. But, investment in internet speeds has lagged behind elsewhere.
This means that youâre going to have the option of choosing the fastest server and best encryption â but the service provider cannot control speeds from their servers onward.
However, some VPN service providers actually offer more than two, or more, servers.
In this case, you can decide which one is faster, and use that one. In addition, some providers will offer you the ability to pick the encryption algorithms you want.
This is a benefit because some clients need the ability to choose algorithms for better security.
However, this does involve more communicating with the provider because they will go over your security plan with you. For some, this can be an uncomfortable meeting.
Purchasing a Cell Phone VPN
As you look to purchase a cell phone VPN, make sure you look at the speed.
If you need more speed you may need to balance a trade-off between speed and security, consider the security first if you run a lot of payment transactions.
However, for most people, speed is the main factor.
The first thing to consider is the speed of the server, as you cannot raise the speed from you to the VPN server unless you can go to a better broadband provider.
For this to work there your local connection to your phone exchange would need to be capable of supporting a faster connection.
Most VPN services can provide a 50Mbps connection. This is the standard speed.
However, there are many that go up to 1Gbps. Again, this is the fastest connection speed and comes usually at a premium price.
Remember that if your local broadband or cellphone connection cannot keep up with this higher speed it will not do you any good though.
The speed you will see will be the speed of the slowest link in your connection. Itâs no good paying for a fast connection if your local connection canât also provide that speed.
VPN Protocols and Technical Matters
A lot of providers use OpenVPN and L2VPN. You may need to know what this means.
Basically, OpenVPN is a free service that uses the TCP/IP protocol suite to create secure tunnels between your PC and the VPN server.
This tunnel is then encrypted using a public key algorithm and then the tunnel is destroyed after the session is ended by the user. A lot of providers may also use an intermediate server at one point in the tunnelling process.
The inner workings of the software are such that your phone is going to need to communicate with the provider in order to get these tunnels established.
They will typically give you a âshared secret2, a piece of computer data that your cell phone will need to communicate with the intermediate server.
This shared secret is important because it contains the algorithms used to create the tunnel.
If you lose this shared secret, it will be very difficult to track your traffic. You may also need to communicate with the VPN server if you want to create additional tunnels or renegotiate the rate.
A lot of the time, you donât have to do this as often the server will offer you a fixed tunnel rate and time period.
If that is the case, you donât need to renegotiate. Often, it is possible to negotiate a fixed rate with the server by using a shared secret.
OpenVPN and L2VPN
L2VPN is a great way to get the tunnelling process started. The main advantage of an L2VPN is that you are protecting your traffic with the OpenVPN protocol suite.
This means that no special software is needed and you donât need to manage servers. Additionally, OpenVPN is easy to install, configure, and use.
By choosing OpenVPN for your VPN service, you are protecting your traffic with the OpenVPN protocol suite.
No special software is needed. Additionally, OpenVPN is easy to install, configure, and use.
With L2VPN, you are protecting your traffic with the VPN server. The VPN server, or VPN proxy, will forward your traffic to the VPN server.
The VPN server is the server that you connect to via a tunnel.
L2VPN simply takes it a step further by using the VPN server as the L2VPN server.
You are encrypting your traffic with the VPN server and then the VPN server is making sure that your tunnel is accessible to other computers.
Another advantage of using VPN servers is that you have one place to fall back.
You can use the VPN server to fall back to, perhaps, if your VPN connection fails. This means that your traffic is encrypted in the VPN server, which means that the tunnel is accessible to other computers.
This is great because it means that your data is secure and protected against âterahertz attacksâ.
SSH Tunnels
Finally, there is the option of using SSH tunnels.
You can use SSH tunnels to tunnel your traffic over an SSH server, which is a server that supports SSH tunnels, or over a SOCKS server, which is an encryption alternative to SOCKS which is commonly used for web browsing.
You do not need to use an SSH server as your tunnel can be made to connect to another computer over an SSH connection, but that is more difficult.
Your tunnel can be made to connect to another computer through an SSH connection.
The VPN and VPN proxy can be used to speed up your browsing speed and to ensure that no matter what time you go offline, your traffic will not be blocked.
The Virtual Private Networking server will ensure that your traffic will not be intercepted. The server will also ensure that your traffic is encrypted.
Thus, your web traffic is encrypted and secure.
Multi-user and Business VPN Accounts for Businesses Schools Etc
It is possible to get a guaranteed encrypted tunnel connection to your data, even while you, the subscriber, are away from your computer.
Your VPN proxy will decrypt the tunnel on your behalf, so it is possible to get your phone or PC/ laptop connected to the VPN server even when you are not connected to your machine.
This is great because your tunnel is accessible to other computers and even other networks.
Your tunnel can be accessed by other computers that are not connected to your local network if you allow this.
Your tunnel can be shared with other people.
This is a great benefit for a business or a school. The tunnel is secure, and but you can still share it with other people.
The other people will not see that you are tunnelling their traffic.
This also gives you great leverage. When away from your computer, all your devices will still be protected.
Safely Access Your Files for Your Home PC While Travelling
You can access your files from your laptop while you are away from your laptop, or home computer.
The VPN will ensure that there are no prying eyes.
It is great for college students who go away for college but need to see their files which are still on their home PC.
This gives them access, with security and peace of mind.
If you have your VPN tunnel set up correctly with a multi-user account, you will not have to pay extra for other people to use the net with you.
The VPN has the benefit that you will not have to pay extra for another computer to surf the net.
This can be really useful. So a VPN on a phone can be a great advantage for you.
Using the VPN has other advantages, too. You can access your files when away from home when you need them.
If you use a VPN service, you may be surprised at how inexpensive it is. You may not realize just how cheap it is until you look it up.
Setting Up a Cell Phone VPN
The VPN can be very easy to set up.
This can be great if you are a newbie in setting up computers. Once you have the software, setting up the tunnel is easy.
You will not have to go elsewhere. All that you have to do is install and use the software.
The software is available from many websites.
You may have to pay for the best software, but it is well worth the money.
This will make setting up the tunnel very simple.
Finally a Word of Warning
The software can be used to make your computer appear as if it was in another location, and you can keep your identity anonymous for sure.
But, with this comes an enhanced ability to behave badly.
It is appealing for many to use VPN software to make their cell phone or computer/ TV appear to be in the US while using video and TV streaming accounts.
However, you should check the Terms of Service you signed up for.
Many streaming services prohibit the use of PBNs in this way and may terminate your account.

The pleas of false people mean nothing: Nierâs sound and enemy design carries a vital message.
(This Cannot Continue.)
For Nier/Taroverse Fans: (Skip this section if youâre not one of my tragic people (yet)):
This essay is primarily aimed at fans of Nier:Automata, or at least people interested in it. Or good game and sound design fans in general.Â
That said, I am primarily a Homestuck blog, and my perspective will include some comparisons to Homestuck. Donât worry, nothing you wonât be able to follow-- even if youâve literally never heard of Homestuck. In fact, you may come away from this with a new area of interest if youâve exhausted Nier: Automataâs content and it left you hungry for a similar kind of story.Â
Even if you canât imagine reading all of the comic proper, Hiveswap is coming out soon--possibly even this month, and Iâm confident that game will make an excellent entry point into the series. Iâm also running a youtube channel dedicated to explaining the comic to newcomers, along with potential lore links between the game and the comic, a la Dark Souls.
This piece will include some fairly big Homestuck spoilers, but frankly I donât think it will matter either way--like with Nier: Automata itself, even spoiling the entire story couldnât for a second make up for the actual execution.
In any case, No matter how much youâve interacted with either Nier or Homestuck, you should be able to follow along and enjoy my points about both in this essay just fine.Â
Iâm also going to avoid spoilers about Nier: Automata for the most part. However, I will be outlining the basic premise of the game and the thematic undercurrents that run through the entire story, so there are obviously some spoilers for the early game.
For Homestuck Fans:Â (Skip this section if youâre not one of my tragic people (yet)):Â
Yeah, I know Iâm in the middle of a whole series of essays on Jake and that I kind of established a strong build up for the next essay. That oneâs still coming--I might publish it tonight or maybe tomorrow. Iâm excited about it!
But frankly, I kind of went through some really intense and borderline traumatic stuff in my personal life the last couple days. Not to do with Dirkjake or Homestuck at all--everyone whoâs read my posts has thus far been terrifically kind to me, and the criticism and feedback Iâve received has been constructive in polishing and framing the next entry. I havenât gotten a single anon hate message or anything. Thanks for that.
Just to do with some stuff irl, and writing is how I cope, and what happened made me want to write about this right the fuck now. I donât feel like it can wait, no matter how much I love the subject of Jake English. Given how bombastic I am in those essays, that should give you an idea how strongly I feel about this subject.
I also think that understanding my views on Nier will illuminate how I approach and deconstruct Homestuck from an analytical perspective, and at the very least help you contextualize my ongoing writing on the comic. So this is relevant in the long term anyway, Iâm just kind of chagrined Iâm essentially pulling an analysis series intermission here. Fucking RIP, I have become my own comedy.
OK, so all that stuff out of the way: This essay will be split into four sub-sections, following a naming convention you should be able to recognize pretty quickly. I want to talk about the main antagonists in Nier: Automata:Â

The Machines, and why theyâre currently my favorite antagonists in any video game ever.Â
Androids: Data for the uninitiated.
(This Cannot Continue.)
Nier: Automata is the latest entry in what is obscurely understood as the Drakengard-Nier franchise-- A series of action RPG Square-Enix games. Like Homestuckâs Andrew Hussie, most of the Taroverse saga (Drakengard 2 can stay in its corner) was conceptualized and directed by a notable Auteur figure: Yoko Taro- from whom the franchise gets its name. Thatâs not to say heâs solely responsible for the quality of his games, but simply that this is the reputation heâs earned in the fan community.Â
The reason I bring these auteurs up at all is that they both seem concerned with very similar ideas, leading to some peculiar similarities between their works. By bringing up the similarities between them, I feel I can better get at the core of what each series has to offer, and hopefully enticing fans of the one to consider the other. Â
Both series include explorations on the nature of existing as part of the Multiverse, along with multiple and sequential apocalyptic scenarios (both stories span over thousands if not millions of years and several civilizations). They both have questions to ask about the human condition, the nature of power and relationships, and humanityâs relationship with both reality and God.Â
If I had to describe my opinion on their philosophical differences in a paragraph, hereâs what Iâd say: Homestuck explores the concept of the multiverse while presenting a path for how to reach Heaven. The Taroverse explores how it can be used to imagine an endless, cyclical Hell.
If youâre not averse to spoilers or watching some pretty disturbing and depressing stuff and you want to see a fantastic case for this reading of the Taroverse, I suggest watching @pixievalkyrie âs excellent breakdown of the entire franchiseâs history. Fair warning: Trigger warnings for pretty much every kind of horrible abuse and degradation of life imaginable.Â
If you want to see my case backed up further for Homestuck, well-- thereâs no earthly way to break Homestuck into smaller chunks like the Taroverse allows for, so I suppose youâll just have to stay tuned to my work and read the comic yourself in the meantime. But Tex Talks does a very good job of explaining the nature of Homestuckâs setting in this video, and I think youâll find similarities.Â
Now we can finally get to talking about the damn game.Â
Aliens: The Shape of the Enemy.
(This cannot continue.)
The premise of the game is as follows: After surviving about four distinct apocalyptic events and/or wars, thousands of years in the future, Earth faces an alien invasion. The invasion is successful and drives whatâs left of humanity off the planet and onto the Moon.Â
The aliens do not fight themselves, however-- instead preferring to build a distinct industry of robotic weapons to fight their war for them: The Machines, our antagonists.

In response to the threat, humanity builds autonomous weapons of their own. Our Protagonists: The Androids. The three primary androids in our story are two combat androids, codenamed 2B and A2, and one scanner/support Android codenamed 9S. Here we see 2B, 9S, and A2--from top left to bottom right.

Whatâs immediately noticeable is how different Androids and Machines are.Â
Androids look and feel, for all intents and purposes, perfectly human. They talk fluently, consider complex problems, and clearly care for each other. They are expressly ordered not to show emotions, but they demonstrably have them anyway.Â
Machines, by comparison, look like crude imitations of people, toy-like and expressionless. Their voices are synthesized and robotic, their intonations and accents alien, making it difficult to discern emotion. Machines look mass-produced and cheaply customizable, with a variety of modifications pasted onto a crude and simple base design to fill out enemy types.
Androids are also ridiculously more competent and functional. This is a hack nâ slash game, and the Machines are direct analogs to, say, Heartless from Kingdom Hearts.Â
During gameplay, youâll mow them down by the hundreds practically effortlessly, and though there are some bigger and tougher variants, most of them come across as borderline pathetic in their attempts to fight.
But both kinds of robots share a few similarities, one of which is this:Â
They are both connected to Post-Singularity Server networks that give them orders on how to fight their enemy.Â
For both Machines and Androids, these supercomputers are the structures actually calling the shots--theyâre the sources of the series of orders that lead to a war that seems to span anywhere from centuries to millennia.Â
Neither Androids or Machines are calling the shots. But Androids have a design that makes it easy for them to signal feelings and complex internal realities, and Machines are designed to look very easy to dehumanize.Â
And this is a Taroverse game, so of course this depressing as hell setup is only the beginning of a long fall down.Â
Machines: Sounds that mean nothing.Â
(This cannot continue.) Early into the game, 2B and 9S begin to note more and more machines behaving erratically. More and more machines become non-aggressive, staring blankly into space or beginning to ramble about random subjects, wandering the land and modifying themselves based on their environments.
As a player, Your orders are clear: Machines are to be eliminated. These are also the orders of 2B and 9S, and the game has you continue carrying them out mostly unquestioned except through these little niblets of bizarre behavior from the machines. It doesnât matter anyway--theyâre the enemy, and you have to fight to win. This dynamic comes to its first climax in what will surely become one of the gameâs most memorable scenes. 2B and 9S find their way to a small enclave of machines minding their own business, and what they find staggers their imaginations:
These robots are non-hostile. Theyâre rocking cradles while repeating âChild. Child.â Bumping into each other in suggestive ways while repeating âLove. Love.â and âTogether. Forever.â All in those monotone, synthesized voices. Sounding so empty and wrong.Â
9S forms an interesting response to this. He says: âDonât listen to them, 2B. They donât have any feelings. Theyâre just imitating human speech.âÂ
And itâs easy to come to that conclusion, right? Itâs not like they emote. Itâs not like theyâre really able to. Essentially, 9S considers the Machines a threat, first and foremost--so when they act in a way that might engender empathy, he assumes itâs a trick or a ploy--an attempt to win the Androids over in order to hurt them.Â
Itâs deceitful, but itâs also worse than that. Itâs deceit by sheer virtue of itâs premise: Machines cannot possibly say something indicating emotions like love, desire, or care because Machines are not real beings. They arenât people.
Theyâre tools and weapons and puppets to a supercomputerâs Agenda-- not autonomous entities who think and feel for themselves, at least as far as heâs concerned. Thatâs what he was taught by his intelligence server, and that server is really the only source of information in his life. Itâs natural to rely on it.Â
Still, the machines donât react to your presence and thereâs nowhere to go. The only way forward is through violence. And once you provide it, they answer, with a lone Machine rising up and declaring:Â
Iâll get you for this.Â
As the fight continues, more and more machines make odd statements as they throw themselves at our protagonists, who demolish them by the dozens. Statements like: I love you! Kill! and Hatred! Pain! The robots suggest they feel what youâre doing. That they know whatâs happening to them. Again, this war has gone on forever, and you--as the Androids--are almost absurdly more powerful than they are. 2B executes machines by the dozens constantly, across every corner of the world she can reach them in. The Machines surely know this as they watch their community die on her sword, one after another. They can likely feel exactly how weak they are.Â
But the voices that deliver their pain to the player remain stilted and alien--difficult to recognize. As the battle rises to itâs conclusion, however, one machine voices a thought that catches on. A short, clipped statement every machine can get behind. A meme. This Cannot Continue. The machines repeat it faster and faster, uniting under a common rallying cry. This tension builds and builds until suddenly, the Machines experience some sort of breakdown, straight up throwing a collective tantrum in (seemingly pantomime) desperation and repeating the words so fast and so often it barely sounds like a recognizable statement and sounds pure like pure cacophony.
Looking at this screenshot might convey some of the effect, but listening to the noise theyâre collectively making is really something else. Iâd link to the scene, but I donât want to spoil what they do next. All Iâll say is that once they all gather around this common, desperate thought, they take action. When they do, the music shifts... And the game does something Iâve never seen before.

Hereâs another area where Nier: Automata is similar to Homestuck. Both properties are downright famous for their use of leitmotif and attaching particular meanings to different musical motifs. (The developer of Undertale, Toby Fox, got his start as a Homestuck musician.) But even in this sense, what Nier: Automata pulls off is uniquely powerful. This song uses everything about itself to inform and flesh out the themes of the game. Once the robots do what they do next, we get an new rendition of the gameâs main battle theme. A battle theme titled as Birth of a Wish.Â
Right from the title, the song is telling us something. Birth of a Wish (This cannot Continue) qualifies the robotâs collective statement as a wish, a desire. A wish for mercy? For deliverance? For justice, or peace? Itâs hard to know. Probably all of the above. And the song itself tricks the player. Or at least, it tricked me. I should mention that Nier does one thing that Homestuck only really dabbled in: Vocal work. Specifically, vocal work in a made up language-- @pixievalkyrie again comes to my rescue with an excellent breakdown of Emi Evanâs downright staggering artistic achievement in her creation of a composite chaos language derived from most of the major languages on Earth.Â
Emiâs music is one of the major reasons I love this franchise, which is to say that when I first listened to this song, I did so actively hoping its vocal works wouldnât make sense to me.Â
And I got what I wanted! The vocals, as usual, were smooth and fascinating but seemingly meaningless enough that I could use the music as a backdrop for my writing--Iâve been listening to this track pretty much nonstop for the last couple of weeks.Â
Which made it downright chilling when I realized, quite abruptly, that I was wrong. I have no idea if you noticed while listening to it or not--I genuinely donât know if Iâm an outlier here (pls send me asks with your experience!). But if you didnât, then listen again: Most of the vocals for this song are written in plain English.Â
They consist of three words: This cannot continue.Â
The voices of the robots become part of the song. And the song itself is structured such that it informs the nature of their plight. The voices of the robots are barely musical--they are blank statements stated in synthesized monotone, hard to draw sentiment from.Â
But they are persistent, barging into the song as forcefully as they possibly can for as long as they can. Their voices donât rest or stop willingly, seeming as though theyâre almost forming a sort of counterbeat to the songâs main line. And when they stop, it is always because they are cut off, shut down and out of the song by the force of the Instruments.Â
Which is fitting, because instruments are what deny them in the game, too--after all, the Androids are simply tools. To the humans, to their server, and to you.Â
The experience of listening to them goes something like: This cannot continue this cannot continue this cannot continue this cannot--Â Over and over again, until the song inevitably drowns them for its climaxes, only for their voices to return once again.Â
Itâs a marvel of musical storytelling. But what makes it a diamond is what happens next. Later into the game, you come into contact with a village of Machines waving the white flag of surrender.Â
These machines inform the androids that they have disconnected from the information network, as have been many other groups of machines across the world. This is the cause for their erratic behavior--these machines now wish only to learn about the world and themselves and live in peace.Â
The music for this village is fundamentally different, to go with the information we gain:
youtube
[^Please Listen^]
Here the game tips itâs hand for good. Iâm genuinely not sure what language this is in, or if it has actual lyrics--but it doesnât matter. The vocal work is so stellar that the sentiment and meaning are carried in the simple tone of the voices. Like before, the Robots sing in harmony, but they sound deeply different.Â
Their voices are still synthesized, but now they suggest an almost melancholy and gentle inquisitiveness. They sound so similar to the childlike voices that actually emote that the two distinct voice tracks flow into each other, rather can harshly contrasting like (This cannot continue)âs voices do.Â
The sentiment conveyed is clear, even though in this case the Machines donât seem to be speaking any language I understand. These are real beings.Â
These are real people. These are just a bunch of kids.Â
This is only the beginning of the Nier: Automata experience, and itâll go on to explore so many more concepts that I donât feel bad about spoiling it. It would be literally impossible for you to guess what happens next, and this isnât even a quarter into what the game as a whole has to offer.Â
But this is where we get off the train of Nierâs plot and into what the game is trying to tell us. There are only two more relevant pieces of information from the story left for me to spoil. After that, I will be discussing only the message the game is trying to send philosophically, without leaning on any more of the story.Â
These are two more similarities between Machines and Androids:
1) Machines and Androids are built from the same materials.
2) Machines and Androids both consider their creators their Gods.
As well they should. Because once humans transgress the boundary of creating sentient life, that is what they will have become. And that is not just a possibility. It is an imminent reality of our future, which is coming sooner than you think. Which is why Nier: Automata is more than just a profoundly existential, deeply enjoyable work of art.Â
Nier: Automata is a warning.
Humans: Become as Gods.
(This cannot Continue.)

The leading scientists and experts of our planet pretty much agree that the Singularity is not just inevitable, but coming fast. The point when the machines we create become advanced enough to recognize and modify themselves, thus beginning a process of autonomous self-improvement that will far outspeed even the increasingly staggering rate of progress we humans are capable of, is coming.
Many of the most successful and scientific minds in our generation have issued dire warnings about AI. Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, Elon Musk--these are not uninformed people prone to spreading fantasy. I know this sounds like sci-fi drama, but itâs just a fact of life--whatâs about to happen is real, and serious people are taking it very seriously.Â
We can already reform the very shape of our planet. We can already extend our own lives and perform fucking magic like creating warmth when the world is cold, drawing water from nowhere as soon as we want it, and talk to literally anyone anywhere on the planet because we are all interconnected through a massive, sprawling, infinite plane of ideas and concepts we forced into reality--a composite experience containing all of our minds.
Once we have created life that can evolve without us, that is as aware of the world as we are--then we will really be as good as Gods. And when it happens, it will not save us from ourselves. It wonât fix the world for us.
If we are not mature enough to handle it, if we cannot evolve to the responsibility of our power, then it will without a doubt destroy us as a species. And it will destroy us because of our ability to dehumanize and abuse each other.
We humans have more in common with Androids and Machines than one would initially think. In fact, we have one unnervingly real similarity with both of them:
We have intelligence superstructures that inform how we think about reality and other people, too. Youâre reading this on one. This is true whether youâre on Tumblr, Reddit, or wherever else this ends up.Â
In this time of intense political division, there two main internets: The Left and The Right. The internet is a marvelous place where we can all talk to each other and transmit ideas, sure. But like with the servers providing information to both Androids and Machines, itâs also where a lot of people get their orders.
But not everyone. Obviously, like in Nier: Automata, the reality is more complicated than that. I just wonder if we will realize that long enough to look at what our world has become and fix it.Â
There are people in control of my country right now that view me and the people I love as Machines were viewed by Androids. Our voices are wrong. The shapes and colors of our bodies are unnatural and awkward. The intonations and behaviors we use are strange and eerie to them, and the way we love and wish to present ourselves is incorrect to them. And so when we say we are being hurt it does not matter. We are not real. We cannot say real things. It is all in service to a greater Agenda.Â
The horror of the Machines, and the reason they are important characters, is not because of the threat they pose to the characters or some intrinsic Wrongness they reveal about the nature of life or humans.Â
The horror of the Machines is how easy it is to ignore the fact that they feel horror. The horror of the Machines is how easy it is to make them look horrible. The horror of the Machines is that they can speak and speak but the Androids may never choose to listen.Â
The horror of the Machines is that they are people, and we have stolen that from them. And if we continue to regard other humans the way we regard the Machines in our own world, once we have achieved Godhood, we will inevitably steal it from each other. Nier: Automataâs message is clear:
Gods: This cannot continue.Â
Very soon in the course of human history, we are going to be faced with a Choice. It is a Choice we will have to make every moment, every instant, for the rest of our lives. It is a Choice we are already making, but which many of us still have the luxury to ignore. Although not for much longer.
We must face this choice, both as a Collective and as Individuals. But the choice of each individual must inevitably come first, because how can we decide how to move forward as a species if we canât even talk and agree about it?Â
What kind of Gods are we going to be? Are we going to be like the Humans and Aliens in Automata? This is a Yoko Taro game, so I donât think itâs a spoiler to tell you-you wonât like how they end up.Â
Personally, I have a suggestion.Â
I would like us to be more like Gods from Homestuck.
I like the world they build a lot better.
You can find my writing here, on this blog. You can also find some of my writing on games on ZEAL, and find my series aiming to make Homestuck accessible to non-fans on my youtube channel. If you like my writing and would like to support me in the endeavor of creating more of it, it would also seriously help me out if you pledged to my Patreon. Iâll be more than satisfied if my words move you enough to simply choose to share them with others, though.  Doing so will also get you access to my Discord server, where Iâm more than willing to answer questions about Homestuck and Hiveswap whether youâre a long time fan or just getting into them for the first time. Iâll still answer questions if you just send me an ask on Tumblr, but Iâm basically always busy with writing or helping to run the communities I am a part of, so answering questions canât be my top priority at the moment. Iâll get around to all asks, but it might take time.Â
Regardless, if you made it this far I am deeply, deeply grateful. More grateful than I think I can express in mere words. I hope my words change something for someone, somewhere. I hope my words change something for me.
Because this cannot continue.
See you again soon, everyone.Â
Until then, keep rising.Â

Ugoos Am6 Plus is Ugoosâ newest Android TV box, and I can honestly say, itâs not only their best box yet, but one of the best boxes I ever reviewed so far!
Thanks goes to James from Ugoos for providing the Review sample.
  Whatâs in the Box?
ï»żï»żï»żï»ż
AM6 Plus arrived in a simply designed square cardboard box, in white and green. Inside I found, aside for the AM6 Plus itself and its two antennas, a quite standard affair of: Infrared remote control, HDMI 2.1 cable, a 12v power adapter and a UK adapter plug, as well as a small user manual. No OTG cable is included, but considering the power-box this model is, I cannot complain.
 AM6 Plus Looks
AM6 Plus is a black metallic square box, not dissimilar to other boxes from other manufacturers.. but.. for one, it is made of metal. Blacked out aluminium shell to be exact with plenty of venting holes and slots. The power led is actually on the top of the box, inside the first âoâ of Ugoos manufacturerâs logo. The box also comes with a dual antenna setup which may be responsible for the very good WiFi performance measured. The rest are quite standard â multiple ports and slots arranged around the boxâs periphery, with one port which I miss â a USB-C port. There are USB 2.0 ports, and a single USB 3.0 port, but not USB-C port.

 AM6 Plus Benchmarks and Testing
All completed benchmarks have been repeated 3 times and results have been averaged to give a more accurate reading:
Antutu Benchmark
The Antutu benchmark tests single core performance over multi-core as it is a better indication of the performance of one device over others in most situations. Ugoos AM6 Plus jumps the queue and takes first place! above any other device Iâve tested so far.
Bellow is a screenshot of the latest Antutu benchmark (I have not tested other boxes with this new version, so there is no comparison graph as yet):
  GPU Mark Benchmark
Average & Screen Normalized Score
Average frames per second
GPU Mark tests 3d gaming performance and also provides a normalized score according to the used screen resolution (for a more accurate result). The test is quite short and should be taken as a supporting result to that of the more serious 3D Mark benchmark. Ugoos AM6 Plus reached 3rd place in average frames per second, and only 5th place in the average and screen normalized score. However, the seemingly low placement may be deceiving as itâs not far off from itâs competitors, and the one that tops the chart is a tablet that contains a much more powerful GPU.
  A1 SD Benchmark
Internal/External Storage Speed
RAM Copy Speed
A1 SD Benchmark tests RAM and flash memory speeds. As can be seen in the provided graphs, RAM is much faster (by a factor of about 40) than flash memory â that is why itâs in smaller amount and is also volatile (does not keep its contents after a reboot). Ugoos AM6 Plus shows its muscles as its DDR4 speedy RAM wins it second place in RAM copy speed test, and its updated eMMC storage flash places it in third place in Internal/External storage speed tests.
  PC Mark Benchmark
AM6 Plus wins first place in this extensive suite of productivity tests which is designed to show a more balanced picture of an android deviceâs ability to perform various tasks such as spreadsheet calculations, photo editing, complex web page browsing and more.
 3D Mark Benchmark
3D Mark benchmark is considered as one of the best ways to test 3d performance on Android (and other platforms). Ugoos AM6 Plus takes second place, right after the aforementioned tablet.
  AM6 Plus Extra Benchmarks
For some more information, see the following screenshots from other benchmarks such as AndroBench, Mobile GPU Benchmark, Vellamo, Passmark, and SD Card Test Pro:
AndroBench
 Mobile GPU Benchmark
 Vellamo
 Passmark
 SD Card Test Pro
 AM6 Plus Bugs and Issues
AM6 Plus refuses ADB connect requests, thus making use of SCRCPY remote control program not possible. For SCRCPY to work, wifi debugging need to be enabled under debug settings, developer options need to be enabled and USB Debugging needs to be on, and then adb kill-server command followed by adb shell command ran from the PC. Then a prompt will appear to authorize the RSA key for the connecting PC, and after that, SCRCPY will work.
Built in Samba file server only supports SMB v1, which means Windows 10 owners are unable to access the AM6 Plus files over the LAN. However, the built-in Samba client supports upto and including v3 â so there is no issue for the AM6 Plus to read files from any Samba share on a local network.
The IR remote that comes with the AM6 Plus is less than ideal. Itâs very directional and keys are not sensitive.
8k video works somewhat, but I think software optimization can improve on it and give this box a much longer shelf life.
Angry Birds 2 no-click-possible-for-next-level bug is present and accounted for.
 AM6 Plus Root function
AM6 Plus come with a built-in root function which works like a charm. All you need to do is go to the settings, locate it under Uggos settings section, and turn it on or off as needed. It will keep after reboot, till you decide to turn it off. The power and decision are all yours!
AM6 Plus Video Playback testing (Using KODI)
Resolution Video Format Local Playback Network (Wi-Fi) Playback 720p (1280*720) AVC ([email protected]) Plays Okay Plays Okay 1080P (1920*1080) AVC (High@L4) Plays Okay Plays Okay  2160P (3840*2160) HEVC (H.265) Plays Okay Plays Okay 4K (4096*2304) AVC ([email protected]) Plays Okay Plays Okay 4K HDR HEVC Main 10@L5@High HDR10 Plays Okay Some buffering 4K TS HEVC HEVC (H.265) 10Bit Plays Okay Mixed experience
The box does perform well in day to day situations (most videos played are 1080p or standard 4k), however, it seems that network optimization needs some work as even with the good speedtest results, buffering of heavy video files was observed. Still, the playback results are quite good in general.
AM6 Plus showed excellent picture quality, and also surprised with partial support for 8K video. This chipset does not officially support 8k, but with the new crop of 8k supporting AV receivers (for now, Denon already declared it) coming later this year, I have tested a few 8k video files. As can be seen in the above table, all of them actually played, with mixed results. For me it means that this box is capable of playing 8k, even though it would be limited up-to 30 frames per second. With some software optimization, it can even be a smooth experience.
AM6 Plus was also tested with HDR content as it becomes more and more common in todayâs TV and projector sets. HDR contains more information and is definitely heavier than standard 4k content. As such I did notice a bit of buffering with it â when played over wireless LAN. Again, an issue that may be solvable with some updates.
 AM6 Plus Network performance
I tested the network performance using the popular Speedtest.net application from the play store. I tested both WiFi (the fastest WiFi supported â in this case 5GHz 802.11ac), and wired connection (in my case AV1200 Ethernet over power line). My home connection is a symmetric 500 Mb Fiber connection so it would not limit the testing (but the Ethernet over power line connection does) â Ugoos AM6 Plus performed above average with high ranking results for 5GHz WiFi network, and much lower results with my powerline adapter wired connection:
Speed Test â WiFi
 Speedtest Wired
  AM6 Plus Gaming performance
Ugoos AM6 Plus performed smoothly as expected in the gaming tests. Itâs graphic chip can handle most games without an issue. However, control may be an issue, unless you splurge for a game pad or other more gaming friendly remote.
Asphalt 8 Airborne â a 3d graphic intensive racing game. AM6 Plus Loads and runs it smoothly, Using the included standard IR remote I could steer, but could not use Nitro..
Angry Birds 2 â a popular 2d action game. AM6 Plus run it smoothly and loaded the stages fast, but had this bug I noticed in other TV boxes, where at one point you could not click on an icon to continue to the next level and so you get stuck.
Walking War Robots â an online robot warfare game that requires a game-pad (I donât have a game-pad). AM6 Plus runs it well, as long as you have a gamepad or a air mouse. Otherwise, control is only partial and you cannot complete a battle.
  AM6 Plus Conclusions
Did I like it? Yes. It is not a perfect box, and the lack of v2/v3 samba server support is very disturbing, but it is a very stable, and a super fast TV Box.
Would I recommend it? Yes. It is a serious contender in the top android TV box market. Good quality build, lots of ventilation, a little pricey but you can see what you are paying for.
You like it! Where can you buy it? There are few options to buy the Ugoos AM6 Plus:
159 USD (before any coupon discount, currently at 10%): UGOOS AM6 PLUS Amlogic S922X-J 2.2GHz 4GB DDR4 32GB ROM Smart Android 9.0 TV Box 2.4G 5G WiFi 1000M Bluetooth 4K HD Media Player
Some cheaper options are out there, but this is the higher spec version with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of built in storage.
Same price can be found here (no coupons available on page though): UGOOS AM6 Plus Amlogic S922XJ 4GB/32GB Android 9.0 4K TV BOX Wake Up on LAN with 2.4G+5G MIMO WIFI 1000M LAN Bluetooth 5.0 HDMI 2.1 USB 3.0 â Black
Other places I checked are: Amazon (no availability or price), eBay (significantly higher pricing), or other Chinese stores which either offer a higher price or different models such as the AM6 Pro.
Review | Ugoos AM6 Plus Amlogic S922XJ TVÂ Box Ugoos Am6 Plus is Ugoos' newest Android TV box, and I can honestly say, it's not only their best box yet, but one of the best boxes I ever reviewed so far!

The Huawei Export Ban Moves to Europe Because There is no Place to Hide
As I previously wrote in an update to The Huawei Sales Ban: Brrrrr., Huaweiâs response (so far) to the U.S. Entity List export ban has been one big âSo What?â Huawei claims to have no worries because it inventoried enough U.S. chips and components for another six months of production and by the end of that six months it will have converted its products to Huawei made chips and the Huawei cell phone operating system. Huawei will then be free of U.S. influence. The U.S. is simply forcing Huawei to do what it had been planning to do for years. The U.S. attack on Huawei was inevitable, but Huawei is prepared. The U.S. has fallen into a Huawei trap.
There is surface credibility to Huaweiâs story because even before the U.S. ban, Huawei had released a series of 5G based chipsets designed to compete with U.S. and Korean competitors. These chipsets cover most of the telecom field:
Kirin 980 chipset for smartphones
Balong 5000 chipset for modems
Tiangong 5G base station
Kunpeng 920 chipset for the Taishan cloud server
So Huawei has it covered, right? The situation is not so simple.
Assume Huawei is able to use its own chipsets as an alternative to U.S. components. This still leaves Huawei with many problems because cell phones use far more components than chips. In a typical Huawei phone, Huawei uses other U.S. components: Micron for flash memory and Skyworks and Qorvo for signal processing are just a couple important examples. The same applies for all Huawei products. U.S. components are used in virtually all Huawei products in virtually all applications. So even if Huawei has truly solved its chip problem it still must find alternatives for various other critical components. Even if there are such alternatives they will need to be integrated into Huaweiâs systems and this will be an enormous task. Letâs just say that if Huawei were a publicly traded company (and am I the only one who views it as suspicious that it is not?), I would issue a SELL order on it.
More important is that Huawei has a much deeper issue related to its new set of chips. The designs of Huaweiâs new chips are based on advanced RISC machine designs licensed from ARM, an England based company and Huawei itself has announced that its new Kunpeng cloud server chipset is based on RISC technology licensed from ARM. ARM dominates chip design; it is estimated that 98% of the cell phones in the world contain at least one ARM designed chip.
So how does ARM relate to the U.S. ban? ARM is based in England and is owned by the Japanese company Softbank. ARM has no ownership relationship with the U.S. So ARM is not subject to the U.S. export ban. Moreover, ARM does not make chips. ARM licenses the technology and leaves the manufacturing to others. As a non-U.S. company, Huaweiâs reliance on ARM is not an issue. Right? Wrong.
BBC news reported yesterday that ARM has informed its employees to cease providing any technology or service to Huawei. See Huawei: ARM memo tells staff to stop working with Chinaâs tech giant. Why would ARM do that? Because ARM technology includes technology licensed from the United States. For that reason, ARM has concluded that ARM is subject to the U.S. ban against Huawei. Moreover, ARM has concluded that it does not benefit from the 90 day reprieve on the sales ban. This is because the reprieve applies to sale of chips and other hardware items. It does not apply to technology licenses. So ARM is subject to an immediate ban.
Over time, ARM may find a way out of this limitation on its business dealings with Huawei. Or the U.S. may on its own initiative propose some solution. But the basic issue remains that an entirely non-U.S. company is immediately affected by the ban. Other European companies that make use of U.S. technology are in the same position.
There have been conflicting reports regarding the response of European chipmakers to the Huawei ban. Some chipmakers have said they will follow the ban, but then they later that same day change their position on this. The U.S. ban applies to hardware components, software and other technology. So the decision requires a careful review of the product to ensure it is clear. Consider the difficulties. Say the product relies on an ARM license. And say the ARM license includes U.S. technology. What is the rule in that situation? No one truly knows. So the current situation is absolute uncertainty now and in the future in probably the most important technical field of the modern economy. The impact is substantial. On Huawei and on its suppliers.
The decisions facing European companies illustrates the point I made in my previous post on the U.S. ban. It is not a just a U.S.-China issue; it is an international issue. The ARM situation shows that a European/Japanese company has been immediately impacted by the decision. Other impacts will follow. For example, Huawei is one of the largest providers of smartphones in the European market. The current U.S. plan will cut future Huawei phones off from Googleâs Android system. This will have a huge impact on consumers all over Europe and all over the world. From another viewpoint, European chip and technology companies may see this move by the U.S. as an opportunity to replace U.S. companies in the gigantic Chinese market. But these companies may find this opportunity simply does not exist because U.S. technology is pervasive in the mobile and networking sectors and few (if any) European manufacturers will find its product is free from all U.S. technology. If the product is not âclean,â it cannot be sold to China. From this we can see that the U.S. ban is a fully international issue. The entire world is impacted by the decision. The means virtually every country in the world will need to decide how to respond.
To a large extent this internationalization of the US-China cold war holds true for tariffs as well, where a good number of oor European and Latin American clients have been working with our international trade lawyers in an effort to shift some or all of their manufacturing from China to countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, the Philippines â really just about anywhere other than China â in an effort to avoid the U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. These companies are working with our international trade lawyers to make sure that their products that will be made outside China will be legally viewed as having been made outside China. See Avoiding the New Tariffs on China Products: Watching the Substantial Transformation Sausage Get Made.
Why do European (and Japanese and Australian and Latin American and other country) companies care enough about U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods to seek to move their manufacturing out of China? Because these companies realize that the U.S. tariffs apply to incoming goods from China, regardless of the nationality of the company that has those goods in China. Interestingly enough, not all European companies yet realize this is the case as just yesterday, one of our clients from Europe came to us for a manufacturing agreement for a new product with a new China manufacturer. One of our international manufacturing lawyers asked this client â as we usually do now â whether this client had considered making this new product somewhere other than China to avoid U.S. tariffs. This not unsophisticated company responded that it wasnât worried about the tariffs because it is European. Further discussion revealed that it planned to sell more than 80% of this new product in the United States and by the end of this phone call, we had connected them (via email) with our International Manufacturing Advisor.
Welcome to the New Normal.
Update: Just as we expected, more non-US companies have announced that they are severing their ties with Huawei. Panasonic (Japan) has announced that it has stopped shipping certain smartphone components to Huawei and Vodafone and the BT Group, the biggest phone carriers in the U.K., said they are removing Huawei phones from their 5G network plans. See this morningâs article, Dow drops more than 200 points at the open, continuing this monthâs slide on trade-war fears.

Canât Afford a New Computer Because of Software?
2018-05-02 11:38
Within the past couple months, several people have told me that---although they have computers that are old and behind the curve in performance,---they cannot afford a new computer because they will have to buy all the Microsoft programs like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and such, since they cannot be transferred legally (or practically) to a new computer, and that is hundreds of dollars of additional cost thus making it too expensive to upgrade.
Feeling 'locked-in' to expensive Micro$oft productivity suites in this era is simply unnecessary. Â I have been using open-source, free alternative programs since before I got back from Germany, having experimented with converting while in Germany but still using Windows, and ultimately switching away from Windows to Linux around 2011. Â But one does not have to leave Windows to use the open-source alternatives as most are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, although I now much prefer Linux to Windows for a multiplicity of reasons. Â Germany is a place where even slight additional cost is a killer in everything of life---which is why you never hear music in stores or restaurants, because of the royalty fees that must be paid to play it. Â Most Germans I was acquainted with, turned to the alternative and free open-source programs more than a decade ago. Â I finally took their cue and tried them.
Thus, it has now been over 10 years that I have been using the free alternatives to Microsoft offerings. Â I can read other people's messages and documents and they can read mine. Â All these alternative programs can save documents in a Microsoft compatible format. Â I have even used the 'redlining' editing and correction features of the word processors, and sent corrected files back to the authors, who usually have no trouble opening and dealing with those modified documents.
If you're leery of leaving Microsoft, then just install the alternative programs on your current computer and try using them for a while. Â That is what I did over in Germany. Â They work, and do not require the hundreds of dollars M$ wants you to send them to activate their software which is nowadays preinstalled but disabled after a trial period on every computer you might buy.
When you use an Android phone, you are basically using Linux (a stripped down version), so if Android is your phone, you are already exposed to an alternative system. Â iPhones are Mac OS-oriented, so if that is your phone, you are using yet another alternative to Windows, too.
I am currently upgrading to a new computer---a big Dell 17-inch touchscreen laptop that Costco was selling for an extremely good price, and which has AMD video that is about the only video card that will work properly when editing video. Â I'm not going to say it is easy to install Linux as an operating system---one of the reasons computers are preinstalled these days, is because installing any operating system can be difficult, and both Apple and Microsoft have tried to eliminate the hassles encountered in using computers by preinstalling everything on the computer, so there are no hang-ups when you first turn a new computer on.
This is not the place to go into a detailed description of problems I encountered, but a little patience and willingness to try the different alternatives presented during installation has paid off. Â I am a guy who brings computers to their knees. Â Typically I run 3 desktops with email, calendar, daily calibre downloads for my Kindle (it functions to load my Kindle up with what are the equivalent of several daily newspapers), financial software tracking expenses, my Google Keep lists of grocery and to-do items, and general web browsing, all in desktop 1; the weather reporting tools and audio recording/editing for the daily weather reports I do for a community radio station in desktop 2; and radio automation software that runs 24/7 as an experiment in desktop 3, which feeds an MP3 server that sends the output of the automation to a LAN connection that I can access from anywhere in the house.
For the past 6 years, all of that has run on a small 13â notebook that is hooked into an external 27â monitor, keyboard, mouse, and professional speaker system. Â My estimate is that any computer more than 5 years old is by then ancient technology (the notebook does not even have Bluetooth, which is now completely ubiquitous), so I try to upgrade every 5 years. Â This change is actually overdue, and so are you if your computer is more than 5 years old. Â I especially liked the portability of the smallish 13â computer, but video editing is nearly impossible with its incapable nVidia video card---which is fine for gaming, but absolutely terrible for video editing. Â The 17â Dell came to my attention because of the AMD video card, and so I will have a much larger laptop for a while. Â Not really what I wanted, but a necessary improvement for the video editing.
Those I have discussed the alternative of using productivity suites other than Microsoft, are literally very scared to leave Microsoft. Â Again, I suggest just trying it on your current Windows computer first. Â Once I installed the alternative programs while over in Germany and began using them, I never went back to the Microsoft ones. Â Ever. Â Not even tempted.
Here is a list of all the programs I use regularly:
**Evolution (Linux only) - email/calendaring substitute for M$ Outlook
**LibreOffice (all OS platforms)- substitute for Microsoft Office with word processing, spreadsheet, Powerpoint compatible alternative, drawing program which I use as a replacement for the now defunct M$ Publisher and which imports old M$ Publisher files, and a math program for statistics people
**Firefox - web browser with the following add-ons: Â NoScript to prevent websites from reaching into your computer; AdBlock; Blacken to turn grey print solid black; One Tab, which allows saving tabs in a list when you have a bunch of tabs open; Video DownloadHelper which allows downloading video/audio files to your local computer. Â Before the Quantum release of Firefox, I also formerly used Tab Mix Plus, which allows a lot of useful customization of Firefox, and Down Them All, which came in handy for things like downloading 30 episodes of âDanger Manâ without having to manually do those one at a time. Hopefully those add-ons will eventually be made compatible with Quantum and later versions of Firefox.
**GnuCash - financial program similar to Quicken, but capable of double-entry accounting
**calibre - a Kindle organizing, library, and downloading program which allows converting practically any document into a Kindle file, and will also unlock files you paid for that often only work on a Kindle reader when you may have a Kobo or Nook reader---or in the other direction if you bought a book that only works on Kobo or Nook. Â Additionally, I download several news sources daily, including BBC News, Washington Post, local TV news station feed, and several economic or industry blogs and newsletters related to my field that I can then read anywhere on my Kindle.
**Gimp - image editor similar to Photoshop, only far more flexible
**Xsane (Linux only) - a program that operates scanners
**Pidgin - a program similar to the old AOL Instant Messenger which can connect to many different messenger programs. Â With cellphone texting, I have not used Pidgin for years.
**Audacity - an audio recording and editing program
**Cinelerra CV (Linux only) - video editing program
**gPodder - an automatic podcast downloader program. Â I do not use gPodder since returning from Germany, where I commuted an hour each way to work on the train and listened to several news podcasts daily (primarily BBC). Â If I listen to podcasts now, it is in the car and from my cellphone using the Bluetooth connection.
**puddletag (Linux only) - a Linux metadata tagging program for audio files similar to MP3Tag in Windows
**Rivendell (Linux only) - the radio automation program with many modules for creating logs, automatically downloading and carting up programs, and managing the audio library of radio stations
**Jackd and JackCTL - a patch panel program for routing audio to and from various programs
**VLC - the most universal and versatile video and audio player for computers ever, devised and maintained by French developers plus very lightweight in size
**wxMP3val - an analyzer for MP3 files to find quality problems
**Spotify Player - for Linux
**WINE - a Windows emulator program which I use to run Exact Audio Copy, a CD ripping program, and IrfanView, an image display and manipulation program that only work in Windows
**R - a very deep and complex program for math people like my son and used by statistics people for manipulation and publishing of math stuff, which includes access to special characters used only by math folks
Maybe there are those who need other programs, but for my work, the above fulfills all of my particular needs. Â And in 7 years without Microsoft, I never miss it. Â In fact, with no regrets at all, I blew away all the Windows stuff that was preinstalled on the new Dell.
All new computers come with Windows, and---as you can see---almost every program above can be loaded into a Windows computer, negating the need to send Microsoft any further money at all. Â Try them on your old computer, then have no fear in going out and getting that new computer and saying, âbye, bye Micro$oft, I donât need your pricey office suite anymore,â thus joining what I have done for well more than 7 years now.

12 Excellent, Free Screen Sharing & Remote Access Tools You Havenât Heard Of Yet
Advertisement
Are you constantly being asked for computer help? Or perhaps youâre the one doing the asking. Either way, seeing and controlling screens remotely can save time and confusion on both ends.
Remote access programs arenât just for helping someone or being helped with a computer problem, they can also be very beneficial in assisting in holding meetings over the computer without actually meeting in person.
We at MakeUseOf have covered article after article about remote access and screen sharing applications, but Iâm going to consolidate some of the potentially less common ones that you may not have heard of. We have all likely heard of the popular programs in the game: TeamViewer Provide Remote Assistance And Host Meetings Using TeamViewer 7 Provide Remote Assistance And Host Meetings Using TeamViewer 7 As the internet becomes more evolved, more tools pop up to help each other out and spread information. There are quite a few products out there that make long distance presentations easy, while others can⊠Read More  and LogMeIn Join.me: The Simplest Way to Have a Web Conference Call Between Computers & Mobile Devices Join.me: The Simplest Way to Have a Web Conference Call Between Computers & Mobile Devices Your friend has called. They have a problem with their computer and are asking for your expertise. You want to help, but everything would be so much easier if you could see whatâs on the⊠Read More . But perhaps itâs time to consider some equally solid contenders.
AnyDesk is perhaps the easiest remote desktop access tool 4 Effortless Screen Sharing Tools You Can Use Anytime 4 Effortless Screen Sharing Tools You Can Use Anytime Sharing your screen with your family or colleague can be painless. Use these four free screen-sharing tools to share your screen as quickly as possible without complicated installations. Read More for anyone in the world. It supports all of the major platforms, i.e. Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD, Android, and iOS. And itâs the closest thing you will get to plug-and-play simplicity.
Features Within AnyDesk
The free version of AnyDesk offers all the goodies that any average joe would want. Obviously, you can remotely access the other personâs computer and see their screen. The address or namespace is usually confusing gibberish though. Hereâs a pro tip: Hover the mouse cursor over your address to see an alternative 9-digit AnyDesk address number.
Positives
Connecting two devices via AnyDesk is dead easy. It supports audio and video transmission too, so you can talk as you help. The free version also lets you transfer files between the two devices, making it easy to access anything, anywhere.
Negatives
The free account supports only a 1:1 connection, which means only two devices at a time. The AnyDesk premium paid plans let you increase this capacity.
LiteManager is the most powerful of these free remote access tools. At the same time, itâs not a simple and easy interface. But when you get to control 30 PCs at any time, thatâs a good enough compromise.
Features Within LiteManager
LiteManager has two different programs to install, on the server side and the viewer side. The viewer can access up to 30 PCs in the free version, and even more with the paid version. This makes LiteManager ideal for IT managers of small teams.
It supports Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Linux users can run the program with Wine How to Run Windows Apps & Games with Linux Wine How to Run Windows Apps & Games with Linux Wine Is there any way to get Windows software working on Linux? One answer is to use Wine, but while it can be very useful, it probably should only be your last resort. Hereâs why. Read More . LiteManager also has a QuickSupport mode for no-installation connections. This mode is ideal for anyone who needs help and doesnât have LiteManager already installed. The main program is better for system administrators.
Positives
No other free remote desktop tool supports so many PCs at a time. This makes LiteManager unique and a fantastic tool for a system administrator. Plus, it has almost every feature you can think of, like file transfers, drag-and-drop simplicity, event logs, and more.
Negatives
For admins, the only thing lacking in the free version is ticketing and a screen recorder. Those features are available with the paid version of LiteManager, but then again, there are better apps if youâre willing to pay.
Remote Utilities is a popular tool for remote access and screen sharing 7 Easy Screen-Sharing and Remote-Access Tools 7 Easy Screen-Sharing and Remote-Access Tools We show you 7 free tools that let you share a screen over the internet or gain remote access to a computer to troubleshoot technical issues. Read More . Itâs quite powerful, bypassing firewalls and NAT devices. And it connects to many computers simultaneously. But it supports only Windows computers, while mobile apps only let you act as viewer.
Features Within Remote Utilities
Install the Remote Utilities âHostâ program on the computers you want to access. Install the âViewerâ program on your PC. Connect the two via the IP address and youâre done. It couldnât be simpler.
You can multi-task and control up to 10 PCs with the free version, and more if youâre willing to pay. In fact, thatâs the only difference between free and paid versions of Remote Utilitiesâhow many PCs you can control at a time. So if 10 is enough for you, you get all the features of a premium program for free.
Quick note, youâll need to register and get a free license to run the program.
Positives
There are some excellent features in the free version of Remote Utilities that other programs offer in their paid versions only. For example, you get Address Book syncing, which is invaluable in a small office.
And it features unattended access, which means you can remotely manage a PC even when the owner isnât at the workstation.
Negatives
How I wish Remote Utilities was available across more platforms, but itâs Windows only. That is really the only negative of this program.
vimeo
Mikogo is another application which does both remote access and screen sharing. It supports Windows, Mac and Linux and is an excellent program for working in teams.
Features
Not only does it do the basics such as chat and file transfer, but it also allows you to decide which applications are seen by the viewers when youâre presenting. Thereâs a whiteboard to create drawings and text, the interface is very intuitive and thereâs an option to record.
Another thing I liked are the speech bubbles (which can be easily disabled) to help remind you of what all the features can do â theyâre just nice to fall back on while still learning the program. I also like that while you are using the program, you can see in a small screen in the window what is being displayed on the other personâs screen.
Positives
Lots of great helpful features and multi-person connection makes it great for teams. No time restriction.
Negatives
Code in program cannot be copied and pasted, nor can the window be resized. Also note that each time the icon for the program is clicked a new window is created. I had to manually close out each one in the system tray.
Bottom Line
Like previously stated, Mikogo is great for groups of people, but it also can be used as a one-on-one tool. Although, it may be a little overkill to use to just help someone with their computer.
ShowMyPCÂ is focused on screen sharing. With a fairly simple user interface and Windows, Mac and Linux compatibility, it makes a solid choice if all youâre looking for is to share your screen.
Features
In the free version the features include the ability to take and share screenshots, Android phone support, limited chat room whiteboard, limited application sharing, file transfer (no folder transfer), schedule meetings, one-hour password length, one-hour session duration and limited participants per meeting, which varies based on network traffic.
Positives
No installation â simply launch the application and run it.
Negatives
Be prepared for a popup window promoting premium services once the session is ended.
Bottom Line
ShowMyPC is certainly not my favorite. Its website isnât the easiest to navigate around and it took me a while to find the âfreeâ link â you can tell itâs not heavily promoted. That said, the interface of the program isnât all that bad and makes it fairly easy to use and understand. Out of 5 stars I would give ShowMyPC a 3.5 star rating.
MingleView is a Windows based screen sharing program which is completely free and has no premium package upgrade. This means you wonât be bothered by popups when ending the session. It also has no installation process and can simply be downloaded and ran by clicking âShareâ and then allowing it to download to your computer.
Feature-wise MingleView stands out quite nicely. As you can see in the list above, it allows unlimited participants and meeting hosting. Plus, you donât need to register or sign up like many of the services here.
It claims to have the highest screen quality offered. The user interface is simple â a little too simple actually â and it is easy to figure out what to do, with only a few buttons. The peer to peer connection is secure and built over SSL. In addition, thereâs no port forwarding or special firewall configuration that is required.
Positives
MingleView is fast, easy to use and any platform can view another desktop through the web-based platform.
Negatives
The downloadable file is Windows only.
Bottom Line
MingleView isnât a bad alternative to some of the others, but I wouldnât say itâs the best. I know some may say itâs not about interface, itâs about the features. But in my mind, the interface is a feature and MingleView just doesnât seem to offer a very intuitive or clean-looking interface.
That said, the fact that it has the features that it has and is free is impressive and is certainly the one to go with if you are planning to host a large viewing party, just make sure you have Windows. Out of 5 stars I would give MingleView a 3 star rating.
ScreenLeap is completely web-based too and also only does screen sharing. However, I would have to say that out of all the web-based interfaces, ScreenLeap looks and works the nicest. Itâs also easy to use â simply click the big large button that says âShare your screen nowâ and youâre good to go.
Features
Although, there arenât many real features with ScreenLeap, its simplicity and excellent functionality should not be disregarded. But the main feature that it has is its ability to share the session several ways. Thereâs a link to copy and paste into any form of communication from IM to email to Facebook message. Or there is a code which you can copy or read off to the people youâre connecting with. You can also type in the email address or phone number that you wish to send the code to.
Positive
Very simple and straightforward. There are many ways to share the session invite depending on the personâs comfort level with different forms of technology. You also have the option to share different windows or the entire screen.
Also, no account or registration is needed, at all.
Negative
There really isnât much negative with ScreenLeap when you consider that it isnât a mainstream application, but a simple website. Although itâs, low featured, you canât compare it to the Mikogoâs of the group.
Bottom Line
You might be thinking right now, that ScreenLeap blows MingleView out of the water, and youâre right. It does. Itâs simple, itâs quick and itâs useful at what it does. I highly recommend it for simply sharing your screen and would give it a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.
SkyFex is an online remote access service. That means it too doesnât require a download since itâs entirely browser-based. This also means that itâs accessible on all platforms, making it a nice choice for those who are looking for a easy tool to use to help clients or even just friends.
That said, SkyFex has a great commercial presence as it allows companies to customize the interface with their logo, color style and custom links, as well as being able to display a link to remote sessions right on the companyâs website. This builds customer loyalty and just looks more professional â of course this isnât free though.
Features
Aside for the non-free customization features, the web application itself is quite nice. First though, letâs start with the appearance of the account from the âExpertâsâ point of view. The page is clean and simple. There is the option to add additional computers to be associated with the account. There are also several ways to connect with the client, either by ID, sending the link directly to the client or by email invitation.
While the session is running you have access to several tools such as system information, remote control, sending files, remote reboot, sharing your desktop, chat, and full screen mode. Itâs also neat that when your right click, a message bubble will show where you are pointing to.
Positives
SkyFex has some great features within its free model. From remote control to seeing system info, you are surely to be satisfied with it.
Negatives
I didnât think I would have said this at first, but there are some negatives with SkyFex. For one, you are only given a 30 minute window of time per session. To my knowledge though, you can start a new session with that same user after that and there shouldnât be any issues.
Also, I found it puzzling that it required a browser plugin to be installed on the clientâs end when the link was clicked. This might throw some users off if they arenât aware of what a plugin is and even though it states that itâs adware/spyware free, they might still be a little suspicious. I know the person whom I tested this with was caught off guard by it, as many websites may claim to be malware free, but that doesnât mean they are. Hopefully they trust your better judgment.
Bottom Line
Overall, SkyFex seems like an excellent tool. It has all the features you need, and hopefully it doesnât take you more than 30 minutes to solve the issue, but itâs not a problem if it does (because we all know that rarely happens). One great advantage that SkyFex has over a local program is that you can access this anywhere simply by signing in. Thereâs no need to spend time downloading and installing a program if you are at a public computer trying to help someone. I give SkyFex a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.
Yugma SE For Skype is a screen sharing and conferencing application. It is especially great for teams and business professionals who want to have a meeting, but donât have the time or luxury to do it in person. And because Skype is so common for most people to have, why not integrate with it and make everyoneâs job easier?
Features
The Skype integration allows you as the presenter to import the contacts, allowing you to easily invite people right from the list.
There is a vast amount of features from being able to switch presenters, have a telephone conference via Skype, schedule meetings and use annotation and whiteboard tools. But thatâs just the tip of the iceberg so check out the list below for the rest of the features.
It is important to note that Yugma SE For Skype only works for Windows and Mac, although Linux users can still participate in the meeting, they just canât host it with the downloaded program.
Lastly, an amazing feature is that you can have up to 20 participants in one meeting at a time.
Positives
Well so far, Iâve listed all the positives of Yugma, so there really isnât much more to share. The annotation is an excellent feature, and one of the highlights. It is a solid program with an easy to use interface that is not only intuitive, but productive as well and that is very important in a professional setting. The entire website as a whole is easy to navigate.
Negatives
Unfortunately, there are some. And not being fully compatible with Linux is the biggest one. The other negative is that the meeting has a time limit of 30 minutes and that is when the program is started. So hopefully everyone joins fairly quickly to get things taken care of.
Bottom Line
Yugma SE For Skype is a great addition to Skype and since most people already have the program, it makes coordinating with them a breeze. However, they do not need to have Skype open to participate in the meeting, but simply need to add their Skype email to the Email ID field. I give Yugma SE For Skype a 4 out of 5 star rating.
Three Other ToolsWorth Mentioning
There is a lot on MakeUseOf about Virtual Network Computing (VNC) and Iâm going to contribute even more to it. TightVNC Is TightVNC Really More Tight Than Other VNC Clients? Is TightVNC Really More Tight Than Other VNC Clients? When it comes to remotely connecting to a desktop PC or a server, most people quickly opt for installing a VNC server. Itâs fast, easy to configure, and best of all itâs absolutely free. Once⊠Read More  and UltraVNC, both of which have been mentioned on MakeUseOf are excellent free options for remote access via VNC. Both of these programs allow you to log into a computer, including yours at home while youâre away, and completely control the desktop.
The Google Chrome browser now comes with its own free extension for remote desktop access. It works on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and there are mobile apps for iOS and Android. Itâs easy to set up and use from anywhere, and works nicely even on mobile data. Check out our full guide to control your PC with Chrome Remote Desktop Control Your PC From Anywhere Using Chrome Remote Desktop Control Your PC From Anywhere Using Chrome Remote Desktop Need to remotely control your PC from another device? What About Linux?
It seems like several programs donât completely work with Linux (although UltraVNC does), so Iâve provided a few links from past MakeUseOf articles on this topic:
Which One Would You Pick?
There are certainly pros and cons of each service, but I feel that overall ScreenLeap, SkyFlex, Mikogo and CrossLoop are the best and shouldnât be ignored.
What are your favorites in the list? Do you use them for remote support or face to face meetings?

Creating a personal VPN
The Razzer is ideal ideal as a personal VPN server. No more censored web as you travel, no more insecure connections from your local cafe WiFi.  Itâs free and easy. Why would you not do it?
To begin with, this tutorial assumes youâve already learned about the security issues around installing a VPN. If not, go and do this now! Essentially, you will be opeining up a new port from your local wifi to the internet - a new back door for any hacker to see your network and personal files. Make sure your firewall is well configured and your passwords for your router, network shares and RaspberryPi administrator accounts are highly sophisticated and un-guess-able. What you do here is your choice and I cannot be held responsible for someone finding out your bank account details. Or worse, your secret recipe for gluten free banana loaf bread.
Ok, with that out of the way, itâs all yours.
The first step is to update your RaspberryPi with the latest Linux disto. Details are in an earlier entry.
The second step is to ensure you can access your Pi from outside your private network from the internet. The instructions presented here are not a detailed explanation of this - you will need, for example, a fixed address for you RaspberryPi on your network, a port forwarding capability to this address from your router and either a fixed address for your router on the internet, or one of the free online DNS services (try https://www.noip.com/free).
Step 3:
sudo apt-get install openvpn
Step 4:
sudo -s
Step 5:
cp -r /usr/share/doc/openvpn/examples/easy-rsa/2.0 /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa
Make sure you have spaces in the right places (before /usr and /etc). This instruction copies all of the files from the easy-rsa 2.0 directory into a directory in your openvpn installation.
Step 6:
cd /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa
Step 7:
nano /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/vars
Step 8:
In the text that opens find the line that begins: export EASY_RSA=
You need to move the cursor down to edit this line to read:
export EASY_RSA="/etc/openvpn/easy-rsa"
Step 9:
Next move your cursor down until you see the line: export KEY_SIZE=1024
This line can be left as is, but if you are extra paranoid and have time to make a coffee, then change 1024 to 2048.
Step 10:
Keep scrolling to the end of the file and you will see a bunch of export parameters such as Country, Province and City etc. You can choose to change these to set new defaults (this will potentially save you some typing in various later stages), but doing so will not affect the workings of your VPN.
Type CTRL and X then Y then ENTER to save this file.
Step 11:
Build the certificates your VPN will use to grant authority to devices you want to connect with. Open the easy-rsa directory with the command prompt type:
cd /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa
Next type:
source ./vars
./clean-all
./build-ca
This final line builds your certificate authority. The Raspberry Pi will now ask you to complete some additional export values, like Country, Province, City, Organisation etc. (if you changed these in the previous stage you will see your own choices already set as default).
Step 12: Name the server
./build-key-server [ServerName]
⊠replacing [ServerName] with your choice of name. Call it whatever you like but do not forget it.
You will now be given some more fields to enter values. You can change these or leave them as the defaults, but pay attention to three fields: Â
Common Name MUST be the server name you picked.
A challenge password? MUST be left blank.
Sign the certificate? [y/n] Obviously, you must type "y."
Finally when prompted with the question:
1 out of 1 certificate requests certified, commit? [y/n]
Type "y"
Your server is now set up and you need to build keys for all the devices you want to be able to connect.
Step 13:
To assign a user a key type:
./build-key-pass [UserName]
⊠substituting the [UserName] with your desired text - for example to make a key to connect my android to the VPN I chose the name KateAndroid
You will get some more prompts now:
Enter PEM pass phrase
⊠choose a password you will remember! It asks you to input this twice to eliminate errors.
A challenge password? MUST be left blank.
Sign the certificate? [y/n]
Hit "y"
Step 14:
Type
cd keys
then (using my example username, which you should change for your own):
openssl rsa -in KateAndroid.key -des3 -out KateAndroid.3des.key
This last line adds an extra layer of encryption to make it harder for hackers to break in.
You will be asked to enter pass phrase for KateAndroid.key - this is the phrase you entered in the previous step.
You will then be asked to enter and repeat a new PEM pass phrase for the des3 key. I used the same pass phrase for both so you only have one to remember. You will need the 3des.key pass phrase at the end of this process when you import your files to your devices.
Repeat these steps for all the usernames you want to build a key for.
You have now created your "client certificates".
Step 15: Generate the Diffie-Hellman key exchange:
This is the code that lets two entities with no prior knowledge of one another share secret keys over a public server. Type:
Type:
cd ..
./build-dh
This is where you go and make a coffee. And feed the dog. Then clean out the chicken coop. Have a hair cut. Book a holiday. Call that long lost Aunt youâve been meaning to speak with. Make another coffee.
Step 16: Denial of Service (DoS) attack protection
OpenVPN protects against this kind of attack by generating a static pre-shared hash-based message authentication code (HMAC) key. This means the server will not try to authenticate an access request if it does not detect this key. To generate the static HMAC key type:
openvpn --genkey --secret keys/ta.key
Step 17
nano /etc/openvpn/server.conf
This opens an empty file. Fill it with this text, taking care to change the details where indicated with a comment in # CAPS LOCK. (Placing a "#" in front of a sentence in the code like this tells the system it is a comment and to ignore it when building the program).  Also when changing the YOUR SERVER NAME sections I refer to the server name that was given to the 'build-key-server' command earlier on.

Hit CTRL and X then Y and ENTER to save.
Step 17
There is one last edit to make in the server configuration files to make sure your Raspberry Pi knows you want it to forward Internet traffic through our new network.
Type:
nano /etc/sysctl.conf
Near the top it says, "Uncomment the next line to enable packet forwarding for IPv4."
Uncomment this line by removing the hash at the beginning.
Hit CTRL and X, then Y and ENTER to save.
Step 18
Finally you need to action the change you just made in the sysctl.conf file. To do this type:
sysctl -p
You have now made a functioning server that can access the internet.
Step 19 Pass through the firewall
Raspbian has a built-in firewall that will block incoming connections, so we need to tell it to allow traffic from OpenVPN to pass through.
To create a file that will run each time you start up your Raspberry Pi issuing this permission type:
nano /etc/firewall-openvpn-rules.sh
Inside this new file type:
#!/bin/sh
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j SNAT --to-source 192.168.0.10
# SWAP THE IP NUMBER WITH YOUR RASPBERRY PI IP ADDRESS
CTRL and X then Y and ENTER to save.
Newly created files are not executable by default, so we will need to change the permissions and ownership of this file you just created. To do this type:
chmod 700 /etc/firewall-openvpn-rules.sh
then:
chown root /etc/firewall-openvpn-rules.sh
This script gives OpenVPN permission to breach the firewall.
Step 20
Now need to add it into the interfaces setup code so it runs on boot. Type:
nano /etc/network/interfaces
Find the line that says: "iface eth0 inet static." We want to add a line below the list of numbers that follow it. This line needs to be added at an indent so hit TAB first:
pre-up /etc/firewall-openvpn-rules.sh
CTRL and X then Y and ENTER to save.
Finally, reboot your Raspberry Pi by typing:
Reboot
Step 21: Create profile scripts for the devices you want to connect
We have created keys for clients (computers and devices) to use to connect to your VPN, but we have not told the clients where to find the server, how to connect, or which key to use.
If you created several different client keys for each of the devices you want to grant access, it would be a lot of trouble to generate a new configuration file for each client from scratch.
Luckily Eric Jodoin of the SANS institute has written a script to generate them automatically.
First type:
sudo nano /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/keys/Default.txt
Fill in the blank text file with the following:
client
dev tun
proto udp
remote [YOUR PUBLIC IP ADDRESS] 1194 Â #REPLACE YOUR DYNAMIC DNS VALUE FROM CHANGEIP.COM
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
mute-replay-warnings
ns-cert-type server
key-direction 1
cipher AES-128-CBC
comp-lzo
verb 1
mute 20
CTRL and X then Y and ENTER to save.
Step 22: Create the script that makes your profile keys
type:
sudo nano /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/keys/MakeOVPN.sh
In this file you need to add the text that Jodoin wrote to create the script:
#!/bin/bash
# Default Variable Declarations
DEFAULT="Default.txt"
FILEEXT=".ovpn"
CRT=".crt"
KEY=".3des.key"
CA="ca.crt"
TA="ta.key"
#Ask for a Client name
echo "Please enter an existing Client Name:"
read NAME
#1st Verify that client's Public Key Exists
if [ ! -f $NAME$CRT ]; then
echo "[ERROR]: Client Public Key Certificate not found: $NAME$CRT"
exit
fi
echo "Client's cert found: $NAME$CR"
#Then, verify that there is a private key for that client
if [ ! -f $NAME$KEY ]; then
echo "[ERROR]: Client 3des Private Key not found: $NAME$KEY"
exit
fi
echo "Client's Private Key found: $NAME$KEY"
#Confirm the CA public key exists
if [ ! -f $CA ]; then
echo "[ERROR]: CA Public Key not found: $CA"
exit
fi
echo "CA public Key found: $CA"
#Confirm the tls-auth ta key file exists
if [ ! -f $TA ]; then
echo "[ERROR]: tls-auth Key not found: $TA"
exit
fi
echo "tls-auth Private Key found: $TA"
#Ready to make a new .opvn file - Start by populating with the default file
cat $DEFAULT > $NAME$FILEEXT
#Now, append the CA Public Cert
echo "<ca>" >> $NAME$FILEEXT
cat $CA >> $NAME$FILEEXT
echo "</ca>" >> $NAME$FILEEXT
#Next append the client Public Cert
echo "<cert>" >> $NAME$FILEEXT
cat $NAME$CRT | sed -ne '/-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-/,/-END CERTIFICATE-/p' >> $NAME$FILEEXT
echo "</cert>" >> $NAME$FILEEXT
#Then, append the client Private Key
echo "<key>" >> $NAME$FILEEXT
cat $NAME$KEY >> $NAME$FILEEXT
echo "</key>" >> $NAME$FILEEXT
#Finally, append the TA Private Key
echo "<tls-auth>" >> $NAME$FILEEXT
cat $TA >> $NAME$FILEEXT
echo "</tls-auth>" >> $NAME$FILEEXT
echo "Done! $NAME$FILEEXT Successfully Created."
#Script written by Eric Jodoin
\ No newline at end of file
CTRL and X then Y and ENTER to save.
Step 23
Next you need to give this script permission to run. Type:
cd /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/keys/
NB: If you have issues with CD, try sudo chmod go+rx /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/keys/ first.
The to give it root privileges type:
chmod 700 MakeOVPN.sh
Finally, execute the script with:
./MakeOVPN.sh
As it runs, it will ask you to input the usernames names of the clients for you generated keys for earlier (in my case KateAndroid). Type that when prompted and you should see the line:
Done! KateAndroid.ovpn Successfully Created.
Repeat this step for each additional username you added client.

Best Medium-Sized Android Phone
The Galaxy S8 is an easy pick out for the satisfactory medium-sized phone because itâs currently our favorite cell phone and the only that is most likely going to feel sizable while last smooth to apply in one hand. Thatâs owed to the stunning, more-tall 18.5: nine screen that can provide some of the fine visuals weâve ever visible on a smartphone.
Add to that a whip-fast Snapdragon 835 chip and masses of specs to preserve early adopters satisfied and you have some of nicest hardware in the marketplace today. More unexpected (in a good manner) is Samsungâs software, which continues to improve year over year, despite the fact that it does stuff one million and one features inside the settings.
Bottom line: The Galaxy S8 does most matters right so even its negatives are without difficulty to miss.
One extra issue: If youâve got the greater room to your pocket or hands, the Galaxy S8+ is a nice size raise over the S8.
Why the Galaxy S8 is the satisfactory
You get extra for your cash with the GS8.
Everyone has their desire, but I assume the majority could agree that the Galaxy S8 is one of the first-rate-searching telephones available on the market nowadays. The manner the curved glass meets the aluminum aspects â đ. But hereâs the issue: if it had been simply aesthetic, the Galaxy S8 would not be on this listing. For all of its quirks â the displacement of the fingerprint sensor to the returned, and the unreliable face free up that replaces it â the cell phone is rock strong in almost every different respect.
Great contact response; awesome color accuracy; incredible digital camera; incredible battery existence. And the Galaxy S8 manages to % in 64GB of inner storage as popular, thatâs greater than the iPhone and the LG G6, alongside wireless charging and water resistance. There are not plenty of factors this phone cannot do. It additionally manages to live pretty smooth to use in one hand, way to its taller-yet-narrower 18.5:9 thing ratio.

Apartment Sized Christmas Decor â YES!
It was that year nobody wanted to talk about⊠The secret we shared as an own family. The 12 months our tale changed. The yr we moved from the ranch to the metropolis, and there I was, looking to maneuver my manner around a 9 to 5 with 4 kids, surviving on an unmarried para-prison paycheck, when I, in reality, could alternatively be at the ranch, indulging my twin income family.
The condo wasnât as small as you would possibly think, however it became much less than a quarter the size of our sprawling ranch style home. As ways because the children were worried existence was over, so why bother to have fun Christmas. Much much less did they want to listen to Christmas, giving to others, and being a blessing.
However, I turned into decided. I became decided to assist my children to write a new story.
When the boss changed the Christmas tree on the workplace and gave me a hand-me-down tree, I grabbed the chance to exchange the temper at domestic. It meant shopping for new adorns at the way domestic from paintings, and lugging all of it up the 3 floors to our pinnacle ground apartment, however, the cathedral ceilings were more than lots to a residence the brand new 9-foot tall tree. My handiest challenge became the feasible diameter of the tree.
Imagine my thrill while the tree fits into the same space as a cease table!
Oh yay! Big win in the space branch. And a good larger win in the story department, due to the fact the life we lived, the modifications we made have been about to inspire our new fact.
Sparkling colored lighting nestled deep inside the branches and extra wound to the ends of the branches, then big numbers of colored bulbs striking from each branch. New beaded swags wrapped around the tree and a colorful famous person attached to the top were completed decorations. UntilâŠ
Toe socks came out of my daughterâs cloth cabinet to hang at the makeshift mantle of our double bookcase room divider. They were a long way unique from the jewel-toned hand sewed stockings that had held on the mantle the year earlier than. The exchange changed into mentioned, written into our e-book of lifestyles, and idea out as we shifted gears from then to the new lives we were dwelling.
A more strand of lights have been strung through the spires of a floor lamp, wherein the more Christmas bulbs had been hung. Greenery crammed the gaps, and a diffusion of colorful mittens have been filled with sweet canes and held on the spires of the lamp. Images of our shifting mind, changing conduct, and existence bending moments replaced the sugarplums of the day gone by.
Candy canes filled any more spaces at the tree (yeah, the only I concept was

Quote
Imma copy and paste this from another subreddit because it was so well written by /u/workacct1484: EDIT: Somebody gilded me, and while I appreciate it, in the future please consider making a donation to the ACLU, the EFF, or the free software foundation. Put the money to where it will do some good for the cause. Just going to Copy-Paste from another thread I replied to: Ok, I do netsec & net eng so without going into super specifics let's give this a whirl: but is it now also possible Google to sell my browsing data It always was, and they do. Google makes it's money by creating user profiles, and selling them to ad agencies, or running ads themselves. That is where their money comes from. The thing is google doesn't have all your browsing data. Google has your search history, any tracking done through their ad services, your email, your location if you use google maps, and basically anything you do on chrome or stock android, especially if you are signed in. Now google themselves uses this information to provide a very good service. Ever wonder why google searches tend to be the best? Well not only are they the biggest, but because of their user profile, they know what you want. Take a member of /r/the_donald and /r/politics. Have those two users both search the word "impeach" and they will get two different suggestion lists. While both will likely have "Impeach Obama" and "Impeach Trump" they will likely be in different order. This is because google is predicting what you want based on previous search history & email keywords (yes google scans your email). Now google provides excellent service, but there is a price to pay for it. On the internet if you are not paying for something you can assume you are the product being sold. Unless of course google is your ISP. Then they get everything, because they can see everything. Onto what YOU can do about it. Get yourself a VPN (Virtual private Network). There are many providers, I myself use NORDVPN, but they aren't the most popular due to some customer service issues, and they aren't the most secure if you aren't running on openVPN. The upside is they are relatively cheap, very simple to use, and have a lot of nodes all over the world. But if you are just looking to anonymize your traffic, circumvent region locks, and maybe hide some torrenting I think they're great. On to the technical side, who is a VPN and what does it do? A VPN basically creates an encrypted traffic tunnel & routes all your internet traffic through that. So instead of seeing: workacct1484 connects to reddit.com workacct1484 pulls down images from /r/unxpectedjihad workacct 1484 receives torrent traffic from my ISP instead sees: workacct1484 blarglblarglc'thulhuharblehoggglyfthagn to workacct1484 blarglblarglr'lyehharblehoggglywtagn to workacct1484 blarglblarglph'ngluiharblehoggglymglw'nafh to So my ISP has no idea what I am doing on that connection, only that all my traffic is going to that server. So while they could sell my browsing data, it would be useless. Diagram Now you might say to yourself, "Self, what if the MPAA suspects workacct1484 of torrenting. Can't they sue & subpoena the VPN provider for their logs?" Yes, they can. Which is why you need a VPN provider that does not keep logs. Many of them don't and what happens is this: MPAA sues & demands VPN logs VPN provider says Ok, but we don't have them. We do not keep logs. We cannot give you something we don't have. MPAA curses Now if you start torrenting too much (like actually releasing the new content as node 0), or start doing more shady things like drug deals, and the FBI needs to get involved, you may be in trouble. Because a VPN can be compromised. It's not a 100% guarantee. But security isn't about being unbreachable, it's about being more secure than the attacker cares to break. How do we get around this? TOR: TOR the onion browser, a necessary tool in the fight for privacy. What does TOR do? Well TOR encrypts your traffic. At every. single. network hop. What do I mean? Well you don't connect to reddit.com. do a traceroute to even google.com & you will see many hops. Each hop TOR re-ecnrypts your traffic. Diagram This does create a slow connection but a much more secure connection. It is not 100% secure though. If someone controls both the first & last node you use, they can do reasonably well finding out your traffic with some other information. I won't get into the specifics, but suffice to say it is NOT easy, but it CAN be done. So if you really want to ensure privacy what do you do? Well first off, stop using chrome. Use an opensource browser like opera or firefox. Second get a VPN. Third use TOR over that VPN. Fourth, start calling your representatives & telling them how you feel, then GET OUT & VOTE. Representatives can see who is registered to vote, if you call or email and bitch, but aren't registered to vote, they do not give a single fuck about your opinion. Finally, realize you lack the money & expertise to stop a truly dedicated attacker with any sufficient backing. And finally what does this mean for you? For the average person. Nothing. You will not really see an impact from ISPs selling your browsing data to advertisers. Because it's already happening. And it's not just ISPs. It's google, microsoft, apple, amazon, onstar, basically everyone does it. Especially facebook. GET THE FUCK OFF FACEBOOK IF YOU CARE AT ALL ABOUT YOUR PRIVACY. They are literally public enemy #1 when it comes to privacy. But why should you care? Because these people are often very careless. Not because they choose to be, but because they honestly don't give two flying fucks about your data. And if they get compromised other people may be able to view your data. Maybe your company buys your data & sees you looking for a new job & fires you. Maybe your neighbor buys your history & sees that you frequent /r/clopclop (NSFW) and uses that to blackmail or embarrass you because you called them out at a school PTA meeting. Maybe an identity thief sees you going to .com and now can focus their attack. If you don't think your internet history matters, then post it here. All of it. Oh and everything you cleared. And everything done in "private" browsing modes. And because, personally, I just don't think it's right. You should be allowed privacy. You shouldn't be tracked, and monitored, and sold like cattle. You are a person, not a commodity. And because very often people do not have choice in ISPs, you need to actually fight for your rights because the market is not "free" and there are no realistic competitive options. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
