WHY BUSINESSES NEED HIGH-PERFORMANCE WIFI TO STAY AHEAD

INDIA, 7th February 2025: Secure and uninterrupted connectivity has become the fundamental of business operations across industries. From easily managed workflows to enhancing customer experiences, a reliable and high-performance Wi-Fi network is a necessity. Irrespective of a restaurant managing digital orders and payments, a retail store analyzing customer behaviour, a clinic offering telemedicine services, or a tour and travel agency fulfilling the client’s requirements online, businesses today demand high-speed, secure and scalable networks.
The growing dependency on smart devices, digital applications and online payment systems has expanded the need for uninterrupted and high-speed connectivity. Businesses cannot afford a slow or unstable network that can lead to disrupted operations, unsatisfied customers and ultimately, revenue loss. With businesses embracing digital transformation at a rapid pace, investing in a steady Wi-Fi infrastructure has become a necessity rather than an option.

The Growing Role of Wi-Fi in Key Business Sectors
Hospitality & Restaurants:
At a café or restaurant, along with good food and service, customers expect uninterrupted connectivity. Guest Wi-Fi, supporting mobile ordering and payments or operations for POS (Point of Sale) systems have become an integral part of the hospitality sector. Hospitality businesses require stable, high-speed networks for hassle-free operation for multiple users and transactions. A well-optimized Wi-Fi setup also helps restaurants run loyalty programs, customer engagement apps, and live-streaming events, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Retail:
Creating smarter shopping experiences, technology is increasingly being introduced in retail businesses. Digital signage, Self-checkout systems and AI-powered analytics, eachandevery single thing is entirely dependent on reliable Wi-Fi connectivity for a flawless and efficient business procedure. In addition, inventory management, warehouse operations and incorporating e-commerce require a fast and secure network to make sure that transactions are processed uninterruptedly. A powerful Wi-Fi infrastructure allows retailers to execute contactless payments, customer tracking and hassle-free multiple-channel shopping, ultimately improving the efficiency of sales and operation.
Healthcare:
Hospitals and clinics require secure and high-capacity networks for digital healthcare services, electronic health records (EHR) and telemedicine to manage confidential patient data and facilitate flawless consultations. Medical devices, appointment scheduling platforms and remote monitoring systems all are dependent on secure and high-speed connectivity to function perfectly. Network reliability is of utmost importance in healthcare services, where even a single minute is crucial and leaves an impact on patient care.
Travel & Corporate Offices:
Tour and travel agencies and corporate offices handle multiple virtual meetings, bookings and online collaborations, where network reliability plays the most important role. With businesses becoming more dependent on digital platforms for ticketing, customer interactions and remote work, an ascendable and secure Wi-Fi network is a priority. Tour and travel agencies require fast and steady connectivity for uninterrupted client service, while corporate offices benefit from remote access from online networking solutions that offer real-time analytics and cybersecurity protections.

Luxury Homes:
High-end residences have been expanding into smart homes equipped with advanced gadgets and entertainment systems. From security cameras and voice-controlled assistants to smart lighting and high-definition streaming, a stable and high-bandwidth Wi-Fi network is a need of the time for ideal smart home operations. Whether managing home operations or continuing office from home, residents require a network that offers security, speed and uninterrupted connectivity across multiple devices.

Let’s Review || Chapter 1
Peter Parker knew that his big sister would do anything for him to be safe and happy. She’d given up everything for him twice over already and would do it again in a heartbeat. And that’s why, when the criminal mastermind Tony Stark started inextricably following him around, he didn’t say a word. Because he knew without a doubt Penny would do whatever she had to if it meant keeping Peter safe. He had to protect her, just like she always protected him. He never considered what would happen if Stark decided both Parker siblings were worth taking. Never considered who else in Stark’s inner circle would agree. He just wanted to protect her and yet somehow, they both ended up with needles in their necks
relationship: Steve Rogers/Original Female Character/Bucky Barnes, background Peter Parker/Tony Stark rating: Explicit warnings: Dark Steve Rogers, Dark Bucky Barnes, Dark Tony Stark, Dark Avengers, kidnapping, non-con/dub-con elements, underage Peter Parker, emotional and psychological abuse, very dark, Dead Dove: Do Not Eat
This story is, as advertised, fucked up. It’s inspired by the recent influx of Dark!Steve and Dark!Tony fics and there is a lot of potentially triggering material so please read with caution. Our heroes are not heroes in this story; they’re criminals with limited to no consciences.
There weren’t many things that Penny Parker could really rely on. Her paychecks fluctuated unfathomably every two weeks, the electricity bill was never consistent, and for some reason even when she drove her car dry it never took the same amount of gas to fill the tank. Peter’s class schedule seemed to change every time she asked about it, his after-school club activities were never on the same day, and why did she have to sign this report card but not last quarter’s, Pete? Consistency was something she’d learned not to hope for. Mostly she kept her fingers crossed that things would somehow work out to her advantage, day by day.
For the most part, it did. She’d dropped out of high school when uncle Ben died to start working, to help support aunt May and Peter. It had taken three years to get her GED between the three jobs she worked, but she managed. GED accomplished, she checked off that box on her mental list and signed up for night classes at the local community college. It was hard, but she could make it work. Then aunt May had died.
Custody of 14 year old Peter Parker had been hotly contested, as Penny had only been 21 at the time of aunt May’s death. Technically, she was an adult. She had two jobs, a steady income, an apartment, a decent credit score. Somehow, like most things in her life, it had just kind of worked out and she was granted sole custody of her younger brother. She’d dropped her night classes, picked up a third job overnight, and kept her fingers crossed that social services never asked why her “two bedroom apartment” only had one bedroom.
Semi-decent luck was the only thing that really kept her life running, and by extension Peter’s. She knew it would wear off someday, she’d been granted the lion’s share of good fortune in Queens when it came to looking after her brother and it wasn’t super fair. She just didn’t think it would end so spectacularly. The end of the luck was supposed to be a low, painful fizzle.
Instead, it was a flashbang that started with Peter acting like a cokehead. Peter had never been a particularly twitchy kid; Penny had leeched all the chaotic energy from their mother’s womb and left the intelligence behind for her kid brother. Over the course of several months though, he’d begun jumping at the drop of a hat. Penny would turn the corner into the kitchen and startle him so badly he’d have an asthma attack. If she even glanced at his phone when a notification lit up the screen he’d lose his mind, accusing her of not respecting his privacy and dart away into his room. Asking if he needed anything from the store was suddenly the Spanish Inquisition and god forbid she offer him a ride to school.
Because she’d graciously left all the IQ points for Peter, Penny had a tendency to do stupid things. Like assume Peter’s behavior was because he had gotten a girlfriend or was just going through usual teenage boy hormones that made him act like a jackass. Luckily the dumbass wasn’t actually a cokehead, considering he still blanched whenever she had weed in the house, but fuck if he wasn’t acting like a freak. It came to a head when she happened to be coming home from her second job at the same time he was getting home from one of his after-school club meetings.
She hadn’t been sure what she was seeing at first. It was definitely Peter, he’d hit a growth spurt finally and started to put on some height and muscle mass but was still a lanky little shit, and he was arguing with a man in a suit who was walking next to him. Both were being followed by a slow-moving car with blacked out windows and no front license plate. Peter’s body language was uncomfortable, arms crossed over his chest, shoulders angled away from the man and tucked in, eyes down.
When Penny called out to Peter, the man had gotten into the backseat of the black car which promptly drove away. Her brother had gone red in the face and ran up the steps to their apartment complex without waiting for her to catch up, locking himself in the bedroom and refusing to come out when she followed him in. She’d given up on being the casual guardian, the cool big sister who let him live his life. Penny had begged him to come out, to tell her what was going on. She just wanted to help, how could she help him if he wouldn’t talk to her?
It had started with simple answers, after Penny had started to cry, through the door.
Who was that man? Tony Stark.
What did he want with Peter? To offer him a job.
Why were they arguing? Because Peter rejected the offer.
He was lying. Penny knew what it sounded like, the way his voice changed. She’d been glued to his side since their parents died when she was 13 and it had only gotten worse with uncle Ben’s passing. Peter was lying through his teeth and Penny had no idea why, no idea what to do. Helplessness had settled over her shoulders like a lead blanket, her chest tightening. If Peter was willing to lie to her, then whatever was happening with Tony Stark was really, really bad. And she had no fucking idea what to do.
***
“JARVIS, bring up Peter’s file.”
The voice cut through the silence of the car like a shot, Happy glancing at the man in the backseat through the rearview mirror questioningly. Usually his boss was in a pretty good mood after having harassed the high school kid he’d become obsessed with over the last several months, but the tone of his voice said otherwise.
“Of course, sir,” the AI responded dutifully from the Stark phone, a document appearing on the screen, “anything in particular, sir?”
“Peter told me he was emancipated after his aunt’s death and that he lived alone. I think my boy’s lying to me, J,” Tony’s voice was lower than usual, irritation apparent in his stony expression.
“Straight home, boss?” Happy asked quietly, humming in response when the man in the backseat nodded.
“Records show that Peter Parker is under the guardianship of one Penelope Parker, 24 years of age, relation: sister.”
“So he did lie to me,” Tony ran a hand over his goatee, sighing through the motion in disappointment before anger overcame him again, “You mean he lives in that shithole with someone? She’s supposed to be taking care of him, that place is a fucking drug den!”
“The police have indeed responded to 23 calls involving illicit drug use in that apartment complex in the last 10 days, sir. Another 10 calls were answered in response to domestic violence, 5 calls in regards to loitering, 7 calls in—”
“Thank you, JARVIS,” he waved his hand impatiently before the AI could recite every reason his boy shouldn’t be living in such a fucking pigsty, “tell me more about Penelope.”
The name was said with enough venom that Happy’s eyebrows went up, glancing once again at his boss in the rearview mirror as he navigated through the congested New York City streets.
“Penelope Parker, 24 years of age, born in New York City, New York. Dropped out of high school at 16, accomplished a GED at 19. Currently employed at Little Hands Daycare, Starbucks Coffee, and Kroger’s. Owner of a 2001 Toyota Camry, license plate 605-CEG, rents a one-bedroom apartment in Queens for $1,200 a month, credit score of 713, 1 speeding ticket, no medical insurance—”
“Stop,” Tony grit his teeth, tilting his head from side to side to crack his neck, “a one-bedroom apartment. No medical insurance. Didn’t even graduate from fucking high school. How the hell did she get custody of my boy?”
“Custody of Peter Parker went to his closest living relative, with the stipulation that social services kept up regular visits on account of the young age of the guardian. Records show that visits kept up for roughly 3 months before ending.”
“3 fucking months, those useless fucks,” it came out as a snarl, “look up the case workers, I want their names. And their heads. On a platter. Get a lock on their wifi signal, I want to know what they’re doing at all times. I already have a tracker on Peter, hack into the GPS on Penelope’s phone and keep track of her too.”
“The phone number listed on Ms. Parker’s work forms is a prepaid burner with no GPS capabilities. I can use triangulation to pick up on her general location when she connects to cell phone towers.”
“Seriously, a burner phone? Is she a drug dealer?” Tony’s eyes shot up to meet Happy’s in the mirror, “Oh my god is my baby’s guardian a drug dealer?”
“There is no evidence of any misconduct on the part of Ms. Parker, sir,” JARVIS stated calmly, despite the edge of infuriated panic from Tony, “she has no arrest record or suspicious activity.”
“That doesn’t mean anything and you know it JARVIS,” Tony pressed his head back into the cushion behind him, squeezing his eyes shut, “I’ve got to get him out of there, sooner rather than later. Happy, once we get home, start coordinating with Rhodey for extraction plans. JARVIS, keep an eye on any activity on their WiFi network.”
“Shall I connect to the webcam on the laptop computer, sir?”
“And the camera on my baby boy’s phone,” on his own phone, Tony opened his picture gallery to swipe through the images he already had of Peter, a small smile taking over his mouth in the process, “Keep any recorded video for at least 24 hours, let me know if anything interesting happens.”
“Of course, sir.”
“Happy, let’s get everyone ready for my boy’s homecoming,” Tony stated, shifting in his seat as they pulled into the private garage beneath Stark Tower, “its coming up sooner than we anticipated.”
***
Penny had started googling Tony Stark the moment she realized Peter wasn’t going to part with anymore information. The longer she sat in front of the laptop, the more panic began to grow in her chest.
Tony Stark was a bad man. A very, very bad man who made very, very dangerous weapons and had lots of very, very important and powerful people in his back pocket. There was no real evidence, of course. None of his misdeeds could be proven in court, none of the weapons he invented could be traced to his company, none of the people he practically owned would even admit to knowing the man. He was incredibly powerful and so fucking dangerous that Penny’s teeth ached at the thought of him even being near her baby brother.
“Fuck,” she muttered dragging both hands through her dark brown hair, “fuck, fuck, fuck.”
There was no reason for a man like Tony Stark to be offering Peter a job. Sure, Peter was smarter than anyone she’d ever met. The kid’s IQ had to be off the charts, he’d gotten into that insanely expensive private science school in Midtown. But there was no reason for Tony Stark to recruit a high school senior, even if he was a budding genius.
“What are you doing Pen?” Peter’s voice was raspy from crying and the sound made Penny jump, turning in her seat to look at the teenager behind her.
“I’m…,” she glanced guiltily at the laptop before sighing, “I didn’t know who Tony Stark was off the top of my head. I had to look him up.”
Peter quickly reached out and closed the internet browser before shutting the lid of the laptop, running his hand through his hair in a way rather reminiscent of his sister, “You shouldn’t google him, he’s got enough of an ego that he probably gets an alert every time his name comes up.”
Penny bit her lip, rubbing her hands together in her lap before gathering as much courage as she could and pushing out the chair at the table next to her, “we need to talk, Pete. I need you to tell me the truth about why he was talking to you, no bullshit. I can’t help you if I don’t know the situation.”
The teenager hesitated for all of 30 seconds before dropping into the chair, his expression one of dismay, “I can’t tell you anything, Penny. Its too dangerous, he could hurt you—”
“I’m not worried about me, Peter,” she cut him off, hand rising when he started to open his mouth again, “Stop. Listen. Its my job to take care of you, to keep you safe. Start from the top, how did you meet Tony Stark?”
Another hesitation, eyes darting away from her face before he answered, “on accident. He saw me on the street, I was looking for a job at one of the coffee shops near school.”
Penny held her tongue, refusing to lecture him on getting a job and derailing the current conversation, “and he approached you?”
“Yeah,” Peter rubbed a hand over the back of his head, “Asked me my name, about my uniform. Asked me if I liked science since I went to a special school. I thought it was cool, he runs a research and development laboratory. Then he started… showing up in different places.”
“You think he was in those places deliberately?” The question was a quiet prompt when Peter seemed to clam up and he nodded in response.
“It was weird, but I… I liked the attention,” it was whispered, tears gathering in his eyes as shame built in his chest, “He told me how, how smart I was and how impressed he was by me. Talked to me about science and then just… about me. He wanted to know what kinds of things I liked to do for fun, what kind of movies I liked. I kind of thought we were friends but then…”
“Its okay, Peter,” Penny reached out and grabbed both of his hands in hers carefully, tears in her eyes as well, “what happened then?”
“He started getting handsy,” he murmured, a shiver going down his spine, “at first it was just, just like him putting his hand on my back when we walked through a door. Or he’d put his arm over the back of my chair and touch my shoulder. It was weird because he was an adult but… he’s handsome, Pen. He’s really, really handsome and I was excited because he was interested in me for some reason but now I realize that it wasn’t good and it’s not good and I shouldn’t have let him and I’m so sorr—”
“Don’t say sorry, Pete,” a quiet sob escaped Penny’s mouth and she covered it with her hand, the other still clutching at his, “Don’t apologize, you have done nothing wrong. Oh God, Peter, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I noticed that you’d started acting differently but I passed it off. Oh my God, I should’ve talked to you so much sooner. I should’ve asked what was going on. How long has this been going on, Peter?”
He was quiet for so long that another sob was ripped from Penny’s lips and she shot forward, dragging her little brother into a nearly suffocating hug. Fuck, fuck how long had that piece of shit been conditioning her little brother. That fucking pedophile how long had he been stalking her little brother. Fuck the age of consent in New York, fuck the law, Peter was a baby—he was a fucking child.
“You don’t have to answer, Peter, its okay,” it was a soft whisper, her hand carding through his hair while he cried against her, “I’m going to figure something out, okay? I don’t know what yet, but I’m going to make sure that he leaves you alone. I’m going to take care of this, I’m going to take care of you.”
“You can’t, Penny,” his cries were breathy and quiet, “you can’t take care of me this time, he’ll hurt you—”
Penny couldn’t say it out loud, because Peter would lose his mind, but Penny would let Tony Stark murder her in front of an audience if it meant he’d leave Peter alone. Every promise she’d ever made, to her mother on her deathbed, to aunt May on hers, was to keep Peter safe. To make sure he had every opportunity. Peter was so smart, he had so much potential, if she could just give him the chance, if she could just get him to the point where he could make something of himself—then she would consider her life perfect. She’d die knowing she had done her job, she’d opened the gates for her brother’s success.
“I’ll figure it out Peter, one way or another.”

Greenlawns High School makes a bold move towards the 21st Century!
MUMBAI: The Greenlawns High School in Warden Road has become one of the first ICSE Schools in India to add Robotics & AI for all their students from std 1st to 10th — in their school time table in partnership with OLL.
This initiative has been started in the school by Ms. Caroline, the principal of Greenlawns High School. Ms. Caroline — an Education Stalwart is making sure that each child is ready to face the 21st Century.
The School has over 900 robots that cover the entire tech syllabus between Classes 1 and 10, a robotic kit which will help the students learn the syllabus in a practical way. To construct evidence-based explanations of real-world phenomena behind building models like windmills or locomotives, with forward logic and more
“We have provided 900 Robots, an International level curriculum and STEM and UNESCO certifications which can be used to prepare them for University Applications and for International Competitions, Olympiads and most of all The cost for parents? As low as 4 Movie tickets! ” — Mrs. Vidushi Daga Co-Founder @ OLL
No set up of any Robotics Lab and No need to hire a new Robotic Teacher… The course is conducted in the school’s classroom itself and will acts as an ideal environment for teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts to students. This will boost their skills in problem solving and critical thinking as laid down by National Education Policy 2020.
“We have also joined hands with OLL to carry out the robotics and Ai Coding training” the school explained.
This school has been converted into a digitally connected school with WiFi connectivity and Projectors. The teachers and students are trained in operating these robots and utilising the kits, she added.
According to Nimish Jain, a Class 8 student, who has made a working model of the Light follower robot , “The Robotic kits provided by OLL will help us learn subjects and remember concepts in a better way.”
“The Kids are having lots of fun! And Learning Important Life Skills, Most importantly the classes are extremely engaging. Many more schools should take the leap like Greenlawns and make Robotics and Ai compulsory by simply inquiring with OLL’s team!” Click here to book a Meeting for your school

Rapid IoT Prototyping with the Bosch XDK110 and an Event Mesh
Many IoT projects start with a prototype. We test different sensors, their connectivity within their target surroundings, and the data transmission from device to IT apps. We also use various cloud services and tools to visualize and analyze the collected data to eventually build our business case.
Once we have understood our use cases and their business value, we are often faced with the problem of creating a robust and production-ready pilot version of the architecture and tooling, albeit small-scale initially. Assuming this pilot is successful, the next questions we will get is ”Can we now roll it out at scale?” or ”How long do you need to roll it out globally?”
In this article, we will explain our journey of creating a foundation based on the Solace Hybrid IoT Event Mesh concept that allows you to go from a small-scale prototype to a full-blown global roll-out of your project to any size or geographic reach without re-architecting or re-developing any of your applications.
The guiding principle of our project was to provide maximum agility and flexibility in these dimensions:
Geographical deployment across US and Europe
Various cloud and on-premise deployments such as AWS, Azure and edge gateways
Evolution and extension of the use case
We have joined forces with a number of leading technology providers such as Dell Boomi, Altair, and SL to show the agility to consume and produce events and messages wherever required. As the prototyping sensor kit we used the Bosch XDK110, a great “cross domain development kit” with sensors such as gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, humidity, temperature, and light.
Using the XDK110, we can target a number of different use cases, from monitoring vibrations of appliances and machines, monitoring transport of fresh food, medicines and vaccines, and fragile cargo as well as environmental conditions in production processes such as industrial painting and coating for optimal temperature and humidity. Yawn … How about we use the same platform instead to monitor slot cars racing around a race track, fully connected and in real time? Count laps, detect crashes, …?
Have a look at this video recorded by SL Corporation to see the race track in action:
vimeo
Note: Big shout-out to Heather. How does she manage to drive two cars at the same time without crashing them? We cannot do that!
Let’s have a look at the system and its components.
The Solace Client Application for the Bosch XDK110
As mentioned before, we use the Bosch XDK110 as the sensor device. It comes with an Eclipse-based IDE and tons of sample code to base your own project on. Based on the libraries provided, we developed our own device application with the following interfaces:
A JSON configuration file with initial connection parameters for WIFI, the Solace MQTT connection, etc.
A telemetry publisher to send selected sensor data at a configured interval
A number of subscribers to receive commands and configuration parameters and respond with status messages
By taking advantage of a key feature in Solace, namely the literally unlimited number of topics that can be used, we have created a topic hierarchy to allow for very selective updates to the devices, using wildcards and the event mesh for routing messages from producers to all registered subscribers.
For example, each device subscribes to:
Configuration messages just for itself using the following example topic string: UPDATE/iot-control/BCW/solacebooth/racetrack/device/{myDeviceId}/configuration
Configuration messages for all devices within the “BCW/solacebooth/racetrack” region: UPDATE/iot-control/BCW/solacebooth/racetrack/device/#/configuration
Configuration messages for all devices within the “BCW/solacebooth” region: UPDATE/iot-control/BCW/solacebooth/#/device/#/configuration
Each device publishes sensor data under the following topic: CREATE/iot-event/BCW/solacebooth/racetrack/device/{deviceId}/metrics
The topic pattern we use is as follows: {METHOD}/{base-topic}/{resource-categorization}/{resource}/{id}/{aspect} with {resource-categorization} split into: {region}/{location}/{production-line}
So, we map the organizational deployment / ownership of the device directly into the topic hierarchy.
By using this topic taxonomy in the event mesh, we have completely removed the requirement of parsing message contents to determine routes with the benefits of saving compute time, increasing throughput, reducing maintenance costs, and improving the agility of the platform. It also allows for fine-grained access control of who can access an API and eventually allows us to create a complete governance model of our events, messages, and routes.
We also wanted to support the concept of re-purposing the same device for different use cases. Logic in the XDK application allows for it to be re-configured to:
Select which sensor data is sent – any combination of gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, temperature, humidity, and light.
Select the sampling rate for the sensor data – between 1 per second and 100 per second.
Select the message stream rate – between 1 and 25 messages per second.
For example, in order to monitor our race track cars, we really only want the gyroscope data (x, y, z). But we need it at a higher sampling rate: 100 samples per second combined into 25 MQTT messages per second, so 4 samples in one message.
To monitor fragile cargo, you would rather need the accelerometer at a very high sampling rate to detect “rough handling”. For monitoring food and medicine transports, you may only be interested in humidity, light, and temperature, but most likely at lower sampling intervals of one to several minutes.
The following figure summarizes the XDK110 application interfaces:
The Reference Platform powered by the Hybrid IoT Event Mesh
Let’s have a closer look at the downstream systems and interactions that are part of the system. The following figure provides an overview:
The applications that need to consume the streaming sensor data here are:
Asset monitoring
Visual analytics
Streaming analytics
AI/ML modules
These are all the applications or services that subscribe to either selectively or all of the streaming sensor data sent by the devices. The devices themselves are also visible in the topic taxonomy, the tree structure that reflects the “resource categorization” hierarchy {region}/{location}/{production-line}. Using this hierarchy, the user or administrator can select exactly which devices to ingest data from by using topic wildcards in the subscription and close subscriptions for device data that is currently not required.
Now, in order to support the concept of re-purposing / re-configuring the devices “on-the-fly”, the following message sequence is executed:
The Command & Control service issues a configuration message to one or more XDK devices.
Each device responds with a Status message, indicating the successful (or not) mode switching.
The Asset Monitor and the Streaming Analytics service(s) both subscribe to the successful mode-switch status message and store this as the device’s context.
Now the Streaming Analytics engine receives streaming sensor data from the devices, checks the context of the device and now knows what models / thresholds to apply to the streaming data.
The following figure shows this context switching and monitoring in more detail for the Streaming Analytics engine and what happens to its output:
After a “device mode change” (success) message is received by the Streaming Analytics engine, it now applies the correct monitoring model and algorithms for the different use cases such as:
Detecting car crashes, counting laps, and determining the winner in the race track mode
Detecting rough handling / dropped packages for the fragile goods transport mode
Counting wash cycles and detecting a sub-optimal installation for a washing machine
Depending on the model, the streaming analytics engine then sends out alerts or notifications.
Alerts are then forwarded to a CRM & Service module (such as Salesforce), creating a ticket for an agent to take action whereas Notifications & Alerts can be used in the Dashboards as well as for Sales & Marketing and therefore closing the gap from the connected machine to pro-active maintenance and assistance (e.g. “Your washing machine is unbalanced. We can send an engineer to help you prolong its life span.”) as well as sales & marketing (e.g. “You now have completed 10 wash cycles. Isn’t it time for a top-up of your favorite washing powder?”).
The Hybrid IoT Event Mesh
In order to support these interactions across multiple deployment geographies, we set up an event mesh as shown in this picture:
We needed to satisfy the following requirements connecting various XDKs:
XDKs running in California, connecting to a broker in the US in AWS.
XDKs running across Europe, connecting to a broker deployed in Ireland AWS.
XDKs running in a single location with an unreliable connection to the internet. We therefore connected the XDKs to a local edge gateway broker deployed onto a Dell Edge Gateway which in turn is connected to the event mesh through the edge broker running in Ireland in AWS.
The actual applications and services such as CRM, Visualization, Analytics etc. are running in various locations in Europe, so we deployed a broker in AWS in Frankfurt and a broker in Azure in Paris.
The event mesh is created by configuring each of the bridges between brokers to forward subscriptions and data as per the interaction diagram discussed before. We now have a low- latency, seamless, and global data and event distribution platform that allows us to implement these pub/sub, streaming, and queuing interactions.
The next step was to onboard our technology partners to provide the dashboards, integration, and user applications for the platform. The following figure shows the various technologies and functions they fulfill, completing the picture:
In the next sections, we briefly go through each component.
Visualizing the Event Mesh with SL RTView
In order to monitor the message flow and connections within the event mesh itself, SL Corporation deployed a cloud-based monitoring system as you can see in the following screenshot:
This monitoring system collects information and statistics from the brokers via the Solace Element Management Protocol or SEMP. SEMP is a RESTful interface that allows remote configuration and monitoring of brokers. In order to monitor brokers behind a firewall, in our case the on-premise broker running on the Dell Edge Gateway, we installed a “collector” module on the gateway itself which opens a HTTP/S connection to the cloud system. RTView visualizes the event mesh as a whole and provides drill down into a single instance of a broker to access details about message rates, connection statistics, and various other metrics.
The following screenshots shows a monitoring pane for MQTT connections of devices across the edge brokers and the message rates:
Real-Time IoT Data Visualization with SL RTView
SL RTView is a configurable and versatile tool for all kinds of data visualization. We used RTView to also implement a visualization of the real-time IoT event data published from the XDKs.
A real-time snapshot of the various sensor data from the XDK:
A time-series view of the XDK sensor data:
Visual Analytics with Altair Panopticon
Altair Panopticon is a streaming and visual analytics toolset. It enables users to program sophisticated business logic and data functions using a fully visual interface and publish dashboards to the web in minutes.
Panopticon can directly subscribe to Solace events and we created a set of visualization dashboards to monitor XDKs in various use cases.
Here we can see the XDK110 mounted on “slot trucks”:
In the next graph we can see a truck doing “normal” laps around the track. The gyro X and Y values are fairly low whilst the gyro Z values are more interesting. They show quite clearly how the truck races around the track, turning left and right.
It gets interesting when we observe a truck crashing off the track. In this case, the gyro X and Y values spike, as we can see in the following screenshot:
The Dell Boomi Solution Architecture
Dell Boomi provides unified iPaaS platform to create full-fledged business applications and integration solutions in a hybrid cloud environment. We have used the following modules:
Dell Boomi Flow & Integration to realize the Profile Management application and the logic to remotely control the XDKs
Dell Boomi Hub to manage the reference data for the XDKs – the device Ids and their respective categorization
Dell Boomi Integration to propagate Alerts into Salesforce Service Cloud
The following picture shows the Dell Boomi solution architecture:
Integration with Salesforce was implemented using Dell Boomi Integration. The following picture shows the flow definition for this integration:
And when the streaming analytics module detects a car crash, a service case is automatically created in Salesforce:
Additional Tooling
In order to decouple the development between the various teams and for testing and simulation purposes, we needed a few basic tools: an interactive MQTT pub/sub tool and event recording and playback tool.
There are many tools out there to send and receive MQTT messages. We have chosen MQTT Box.
You can configure one or many connections to a Solace broker directly in the tool. All you need is the host, port, username, and password:
After this, you can add publishers and subscribers. Here is a screenshot of a subscriber to the metrics as sent by the XDK:
Equally, you can use a publisher to send commands and configuration messages through the event mesh to one or many XDK devices.
In order to facilitate the development of analytics and dashboards, we have also developed a simple event recorder and player. This allowed us to provide our partners with recorded data sets that they can play back at their leisure to develop and test their applications.
Conclusion
The entire project was developed over a period of about two months. We started with the implementation of the XDK application and once we understood the data and interactions that we could implement there, we created the API specifications for our partners to start working on their parts.
However, as the project evolved, so did the ideas and requirements. By having the flexibility of the event brokers as the basis for all communication and interfaces, we incrementally refined the topic structure and event payloads as required without disrupting the on-going integration and development work.
Another area that evolved over time was the requirement of where various XDKs are located and need to connect. We started with a single broker “event mesh” and over the course of the project, we added the broker on the Dell Edge Gateway as well as multiple regional edge brokers such as Ireland and US. Towards the end of the project, we also needed to integrate a home-grown analytics application running in Azure in France. This was equally seamless; we installed a new broker in Azure and created the bridge between the central broker and the new broker to feed the selected event streams to the application.
In our view, this is really the key learning from this project. In order to incrementally build business and interaction logic and add new services to the platform, the concept of an event mesh using publish/subscribe with a clear topic taxonomy was key to success.
It is obviously important to address real-world business applications in every project. However, we also need to make it interesting and fun! That is why we chose the race track as the demo system, combining both.
We would also like to thank our partners for their invaluable and timely contributions to make this project a success. And a special thanks also to the Bosch team for sponsoring and supporting this particular part of the project.
What’s next?
As you may have gathered, we completely put aside two crucial aspects of an IoT platform: Device Management and Access Control. We are currently busy working on a management interface for the event mesh that can be used by a device management platform. When provisioning new device types and individual devices, the event mesh will be automatically configured to create the authorization and access control for the new devices on their respective edge brokers as well as the bridges to connect the new data streams.
In upcoming articles, we’ll describe the details of the various APIs and also make the XDK application available on GitHub.
Stay tuned!

Bidyut Kapri: I am playing this for a few months…Already I have understood that it is a very suitable game for me…Also, it is a high-quality graphics game…Moreover, it has become the world’s best to me game while I have updated it…I will not tell more words than it…Finally, I will advise all of brothers, sisters, and also my senior ones to play and enjoy such a beautiful game…
Madhav Ramini: Hello. Chapter 7 is really good and awesome. It has new types of weapons and armors. Please also add new weapon in Dynasty faction. But one flaw – the game does not open after closing it the first time. It remains stuck in the “Nekki” loading screen. Please fix so that everyone can enjoy the game. Thank You.
Harsh Jindal: Hey there, First of all, I really love the game… I have been facing an issue in the game. I am on Chapter VI, Last Level, i.e The Shadow Mind I can’t wait to proceed to the new Chapter VII. But I have beaten the Shadow Mind several times and then their itself the game freezes or hangs. It is happening after the recent update, I have tried clearing the cache, and have cleared all the data once and reinstalled the game but all in vain, the problem still persists. Please do help soon…
Nafis Morshed: The storyline is LEGENDARY. The story makes me play the game. The game mechanics are kinda complex but once you get used to it, it’s easy to understand and control everything, it’s definitely good. The graphics, gameplay, and controls are very decent. The online Duel Mode is a joke by the way. The matchmaking is a joke although they keep improving it it’s still rigged. And obviously, cool gears as always. Finish Shadow Fight 2 first to get the complete taste of the story of Shadow Fight 3.
Dennis Felton: This game is a very fun experience so far. Just reached level 2. I am currently hoping that the weapons and armor do not get “godly”. A basic truly practical deadly weapon and believable armor are what make a really good game. Keep up the good work!
Jaroslaw K: It’s a real pleasure to play the game. Well developed and good graphics:) But at some point, you have no chance to progress if you don’t pay. Normal difficulty, in fact, is impassable and all chests give you everything but not what is needed. So you are stuck with PvP challenges and hope that one day you’ll pass the mission:) Business is business but that has actually put me off a bit.
Kshitiz Gupta: Excellent game… Have played all the chapters and looking forward to completing chapter 7. But there is a thing that needs to be fixed here before that happens. With the recent update, the in-menu navigation has become really slow and the game freezes for a few seconds while switching between the screens. This has never been the case with the previous versions of the game and it really makes the game unplayable. Please fix this quickly so that I can enjoy the game again as ever.
Jhazzy Music: It’s one of the best ancient fighting game. I love it more than mortal kombat for mobile. The graphics are superb.. The only thing I want that’ll make me rate it 5 star is local Multi-player!! Pls, add that in the update.. If I can play against my friend online. It’s very okay or via WiFi locally… Please I know there are a lot of people that want this too… Please work on it.. We’re waiting.
Glen Allison: Beautiful graphics, lots of equipment/fighting style choices, lots to do and the monetization is not in your face. There is a story campaign but having not played parts 1&2 I couldn’t follow it very well. One of the most impressive games on mobile ever, the animation, style, detail, and size is spectacular.
Chef Jeffrey A Kaufman: Always a classic. The Shadow Fight legend continues. This one is even better than the previous installments. Great piece of gaming from a great developer. Love it. Still paying SF2 along with this newest edition. Great games both. The only issues I have are the following. Matches are often very poorly matched. Many times you’re matched against players 500 to 900 points above you. Making it impossible. Gems are sometimes lost while picking free items. The storyline doesn’t keep up with abilities
Felix Romanov: So, the graphics are amazing and the moves are pretty good as well, though, overall, my experience was pretty much horrible. I immediately had to download a large file before I could even open the game, then I had to download ANOTHER large file, the game lagged extremely hard between fight rounds, after the third fight, I had to download something ELSE. I eventually just gave up and uninstalled. My recommendation for the devs is to maybe make all this stuff one large packet, just like Shadow fight 2, so there would be more time between downloads. Yes, this would significantly increase the base download time and update time, but altogether it would provide more streamlined gameplay. Also, maybe add a “Low Graphics” setting at the very beginning for people on devices that aren’t so good?
prasanna spidy: I love the game…. everything about it… except you cannot challenge your friends from facebook… or you know online friends… that would be really great if you could work on it. thank you.
A Google user: Shadow Fight’s evolution is going so good. At first, it came Shadow Fight in 2001. Then Shadow Fight 1 in 2011 in only Facebook. Then the Shadow Fight 2 in 2013. After that Shadow Fight 2, Special Edition came in 2017. After all, in the same year, it came the Shadow Fight 3. The most modern, beautiful game. Its gameplay is so good. Hope that the next Shadow Fight game which is Shadow Fight 4 will be more existing, more gorgeous, more in form. I can’t wait until NEKKI publishes it.
Dylan Mantell: Awesome Update, It is great to see that legendary equipment is getting a much-needed buff. On the downside, there have been a few glitches where I am fighting an opponent AI in the gold event and it freezes where both the AI and myself stand there staring at each other, as amusing as this is it makes me have to restart the progress every time it happens by surrendering.
Karlis Pupols: Thanks for updating most of the pain points. Though this update does require still a bit of tuning. Some animations feel a bit too fast to be accurate. Also fights experienced freeze with the new Qatar item. Would like to see some bigger update information, seems as many things updated aren’t documented to the players (like items in the store). Also, still really hoping we could upgrade item tiers in future so you can equip 3 abilities on a common armor. thanks, bonomi mike:
Great gameplay, awesome graphics n tonnes of weapons pretty cool but I’d have to give 3 stars due to d ascension event update literally messed my game up can’t do many duels get stuck lost lots of tickets, can’t get past chapter v sip of war coz apparently it doesn’t load d final baddie same as side quest so basically all m doing is fighting online #lame# kinda gets boring. Pls, can this b rectify m tired of downloading large update files n still having the same issue? Pls fix this nid change my rating
Mack Tariang: A 5-star game no doubt!! good graphics gameplay and storyline compared with the previous shadow fight… sadly there are still a number of bugs glitches and a duel match can sometimes be really ridiculous.. matching against opponents who are soooooo over equipped with a rating of 500..600 above your own character!! still a highly recommended game!! enjoy
Yvanny Kadima: I loved this game. it was good quality and fast loading. Until… the update. all of my armor just disappeared after tried on a new one. I’ve tried uninstalling, reloading, and even logged out but it still won’t work. Please fix it, this was my favorite game now it’s too laggy.

The aviation sector, particularly the commercial aviation industry is perpetually pulling out all the stops in improving both the way it functions and customer satisfaction. To that end, it has started implementing Artificial Intelligence so as to modernize business and safety measures. Advances in machine vision, however, is finding many applications in the highly-structured environments for increasing security and efficiency of the airspace. Besides, I also anticipate that AI will automate the flights and flight operations in not-so-distant future- something yet to be accepted by the norms.
Furthermore, if we talk about fleet management, it is essentially all about logistics. And at a broader level, it embraces machine learning to produce unique insights and real-time data analysis for passengers, taxis, and aircraft including other transportation modalities. Well, with an intelligence like that, the aviation industry is undoubtedly offering a tailored experience to everyone who is a part of it.
Also Read 5 Best Artificial Intelligence Tools
To cut the long story short, AI is entitled to have infinite potential that can redefine how the aviation sector goes about its work. In this article, I am breaking all the useful insights into pieces along with the current use cases so that it is easy for you to relate.
The Context
The global aviation industry has been expanding tremendously. Let’s take an example of the US commercial aviation: In the next 20 years, the passenger count is reckoned to double. In 2016, they generated a whopping revenue of $168.2 billion alone. This created an opportunity for exponential growth and demanded a proper handling. The aviation industry, therefore, needs to shift beyond its current way of working and look out for better opportunities to optimize resources, control costs, and be more responsible environmentally. Data is the only source to unlocking the potential and thus aviation sector must leverage AI for a secured future.
AI Use Cases in Aviation
As already discussed, artificial intelligence in aviation is in the nascent stage but few use cases are already being successfully carried out by some major US Carriers. So let’s begin with that.
Passenger Identification
The main idea is to have machines carry out the end-to-end check-in and passenger identification at the airport. Delta Airlines, for example, is already testing this process. Delta has been determined to be implementing AI for some time and is very much visible in its initiatives such as check-in via Fly Delta mobile app and ticketing kiosks.
The Delta Airlines also announced in May 2017 that it would be investing $600,000 for four different automated self-service baggage checking kiosks with facial recognition technology.
Baggage Screening
The airports are successfully investing in the latest AI-powered technologies that will support the baggage screening and tracking services. They are anticipating the fact that AI-enabled machines will be capable of performing tasks without any human assistance or intervention in any form. This will not only enhance the operational efficiency but will also offer a great passenger experience. Certain apps are also in the pipeline that will allow the flyers to determine their baggage size and prepay for any additional baggage-related expenses before even actually arriving at the airport.
Customer Assistance
The United Airlines is leveraging artificial intelligence and has tied up with Amazon’s Alexa to have some common customer queries answered. United announced a collaboration with Alexa in September 2017 and the feature is named as the United Skill. The passengers are expected to add it to their Alexa app and can start asking questions.
Alexa has been answering the common queries accurately such as check-in requests, wifi availability on a flight, and the status of a flight by the flight number.

Data Confidentiality Management
A massive volume of data will be put to use as aviation industry embodies artificial intelligence which will significantly give a rise to data confidentiality management. A recent incident involved with Emirates, a leading airline, potentially uncovered risks associated with it when the passengers’ data were leaked to the third parties without any authorization. Therefore, there exists a dire need for adopting AI in the area of data management in order to safeguard the passengers’ trust and support.
It is astonishing that an industry as crucial as aviation has woken up to artificial intelligence so late. As AI in aviation gains its momentum, there could probably be a few acquisitions, mergers, or even disappearance of smaller airlines which won’t be able to afford high investments involved with it. However, currently, AI seems to be the best preference to take the aviation industry to the next level. What are your thoughts about it? Let us know by writing down in the comment section below!

5G Is The Future - Qualcomm MWC Booth Tour with WhatGear
So I think people generally think Qualcomm only makE Cpu's & Gpu's for smartphones... They actually do a lot more than that. For that reason I'm going to try my best not to mention phones in this tour. To be honest I bet Qualcomm must be getting annoyed with consumers only recognising for Snapdragon phones processors. So let's start the tour...
QUALCOMM ARE NOT JUST ALL ABOUT SMARTPHONES!

Did you know Qualcomm are behind the scenes in most of those fast chargers you're using today? And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Quick Charge 4 technology was announced in November of last year. I've heard promises of five hours of charge in five minutes.
THE CONNECTED CAR 5G

The connected car on show was a prototype escalade. This escalade has had some serious upgrades. Inside is a bunch of Qualcomm processors. The snapdragon 828 to be precise which is similar to the ones seen in smartphones... I know I said I'd try not to bang on about smartphones but it was unavoidable in this case. This Escalade has 7 monitors with snapdragons powering the infotainment system. It also has Qualcomms very own Cellular V2X chip. Qualcomm call the CV2X nervous system of the car. It will allow the car to communicate to other connected devices on pedestrians, cyclists and with other connected cars.

Qualcomm envisage a day where connected cars can even communicate with traffic lights... I'm sure London's council's could afford to upgrade their traffic lights. Especially with the amount of parking tickets they've given me over the years. Anyway the idea is that the connected car could receive 5G on the move. Which could mean up to 4.5gbps download speeds. With that many screens and that much data that would make this the perfect multiplayer mobile online gaming session mobile...or you could use the car for business conferences and other productive stuff like that.
QUALCOMM HALO - WIRELESS CAR CHARGING

Now check this out. The Qualcomm Halo. Its basically wireless charging for you electric car...but this isn't done conductively. It's actually done using frequency, resonance charging using a magnetic field. so no more wires. Just drive over a Halo point and your car will charge. It supports 4 levels of charging between 3.7kw and 22kw. They've even partnered with Formula E to test this tech and some of the cars there are already using Qualcomms Halo.
THE FUTURE OF 5G WITH QUALCOMM

Now onto 5G. Qualcomm had their 1st prototype and reference 5G smartphone design on display. They even had a working Qualcomm X50 5G modem receiving up to 4.37 Gbps download speeds. This 5G speed was being achieved with a 800mghz bandwidth and 28ghz mm wave frequency, and what does that even mean? It's fast that's what it means...It's fast. When we talk about speeds we could see up to 10 times the speeds of current 4G. That means you could watch a whole lot of funny cat videos NO buffering.
SNAPDRAGON WINDOWS PC

Qualcomm also had a bunch of pre release high capacity modems on show. Also a showcase of current modems from various manufacturers with Qualcomm WiFi processors inside. Also on display was a loads of stuff related to mesh networking or smart home as we like to call it.
Now this was cool personal computers powered by snapdragon processors... similar to those seen in smartphones. These processors are running full Windows 10 and the real advantage with these computers is the snapdragons efficiency when it comes to battery life.

With the snapdragon processors not draining so much power, I hear a pc running one of these can last around 5 to 9 hrs longer than a competitors compact computers running regular Intel or even Apple processors. I heard one of these pc's can stay alive for an entire month on standby mode and that is crazy. Another advantage of a snapdragon powered PC is its LTE. So they have 4G capabilities just like a smartphone...I know I said I'd try not to mention it but again unavoidable. The only downside with LTE for me is it would probably mean one more pricey monthly fee maybe.
QUALCOMM MISSION CRITICAL

Now this bit was bit over my head, but Qualcomm have a bunch of stuff they're working on that they call mission critical. It's basically factory equipment that communicates over 5G instead of the normal wired networks. Think of an entire factory running autonomously on 5G. They're calling it 4th Industrial revolution. 1st it was mechanical, then electrical, then digital and now connect...tical? Connected...connected. Qualcomm have partnered with Bosche and they're working on this.
QUALCOMM LTE SMARTWEAR

Now smartwear. Qualcomm make the chips that go inside all of these watches. So watches that work almost like a smartphone...I know and I'm sorry. So these watches all have Qualcomm chips for communications between other smart devices and networks. Some have GPS, BT, Wi-Fi. Also they provide these same chips to designer brands for their smartwatches as well. So you might be paying top price for just the name of the designer. However the processors remain the same. So the smart money is on how smart you wanna be... like what I did there? Also Sony use the Qualcomm Bluetooth chips in some of the audio products. I hear they're pretty good.
VR GAMING ON SNAPDRAGON

Now my favourite. You know they used to call me the gamesmaster right? Any way Qualcomm had a bunch or AR demos running. Showcasing the power of next gen AI. Also on show was Qualcomms centric 2400. The world's 1st 10nm server processor for cloud gaming. Of course Qualcomm have delved into the world of VR. They had some really cool demos on show. I didn't have a go though...I didn't want to show anyone up with my games master skills. But I must say it's impressive to see what's possible with the power of the Adreno GPU. They also had some console quality gaming running off yep you guessed it...a smartphone. A prototype by the looks of it.

Now have you heard? Qualcomm's chips actually process a lot of your audio on your tablets and smart devices. They had a few demos on this too. Also the snapdragons feature voice interactions. This was present in that crazy escalade at the beginning of the video. You can ask it to wind down your windows and it even works with loud background sounds using echo cancellation. So anyway that's pretty much it. I've tried my best to summarize as much of the Qualcomm MWC 2018 booth as possible for you guys. You know what though... I can't wait to see 5G in smartphones & how good the snapdragon 845 really is...in smartphones...but that's just me.

It has been 9 days. Each day has lasted several weeks so I’m not sure how long it’s really been…Like an addict who is usually on a constant high from every day life, taking hits with every breath I’d breathed, I am now slamming my head against the walls and floor as I experience the ultimate withdrawls all while descending day after day like a vulture on a dying being, picking it clean one artery, one organ and one breath at a time. The salvage company told us they wouldn’t even come look at Tanda Malaika until they had a $25 000 deposit, while the winds were carrying in massive sets of waves that pushed her farther and farther onto the reef. Each time she moved, rocks and coral that had initially broken holes in her hull in 3 different places was now pulling the gaps in the hulls to the side. Large flaps of fiberglass were twisting, tearing and gaping.

It was as if she was being scraped and skinned alive.

We called the American Embassy to see what help they could offer and were assured that they would send help and to hang tight. The big wig had gone on vacation but we would hear back from them soon. Every morning David (from Geniet Lewe) would get on the VHF radio, tell the cruisers that we were headed out to Tanda Malaika to salvage what we could, and before we knew it, a caravan of dinghies would be making their way out to her. We carried with us tools, thick garbage bags, tape, permanent markers and dry bags. We meandered through the large field of coral heads as far as we could then threw an anchor out, jumped out and made our way to our home. Like a forensic team at a murder scene, we would ascend onto her decks and begin picking over every inch of her, removing anything of value, bagging it up, labeling it and placing it in larger more water proof containers.

I placed screws, nuts and bolts in small ziplock bags, wrote the contents on them and taped them to the item they belonged to. As soon as we had a dinghy loaded up with bags etc, it was taken all the way in to Geniet Lewe in the anchorage. The overflow went to Makara (Ian and Erika’s boat).

While some people gathered electrical items,

others sorted through the galley and main salon. Books, clothing, bedding, tools, food, safety equipment, fishing equipment, the list goes on and on… We removed high priority items first then worked on the less important things, all while waves continued to pound up again Tanda Malaika, causing her to shudder periodically.

We tried to stay upbeat and positive, and sometimes succeeded – other times sat starring in shock then fighting back tears, and got back to work once more.

The creatures dismantled everything they had worked so hard to keep secured and water tight.

Each time we returned to Tanda Malaika, she was more and more damaged. Part of it was that as we removed things, she became lighter, which allowed for more movement on the rocks and coral which caused her to rip even more. The rudder posts pushed through the sugar scoop steps, creating holes on both port and starboard. Each day we returned to her we noticed more things that had been stolen off her in the night.

The salvage company finally called back after we had sent them photos of her deteriorating condition, and told us that given how far she is up on the reef at this point, combined with the way her structure had been compromised, they recommended we either get a permit to have her towed off and sunk, which would total about $35 to $40 000. Our other option was to have her drug off the reef and towed to Raitea to be hauled out and chopped up, which would cost the $25000 pulling off the reef job, the $5000 an hour for towing her 20 miles at about the speed of 1 knot an hour since she would be float at about deck level in the water. After going back and forth in our discussions we at first thought that if we had her hauled out to demolish in Raitea, we could at least have a good look at her when she’s out and maybe she could be saved somehow. But, as each day passed her damage got to the point where it would cost more to repair her that to purchase another used bare bones catamaran and start over. We had been told that the Moorings charter companies were selling boat like ours (without all the added electronics, solar, bigger batteries, wifi extenders, AIS, radar, etc) for $200 to $250 000, as they try to make room for new models. Tanda Malaika would cost a minimum of $200 000 to fix.

We gathered the creatures into the salon on Geniet Lewe and explained the situation to them, and told them that at this point we were going to have to have our girl drug off the reef and towed to the legal area for sinking, about 7 tons of old engines etc would be placed on her to weigh her down, and she would leave the surface for the last time and sink to the ocean floor below. Everyone reacted differently, Mycah was crying and asking all the ‘but what if…’ questions, Jude withdrew and cried quietly, Emma was crying and asking ‘is this final? Is this really the final decision? Is it just a maybe or really for real?’ Aidan was teary eyed and sat quietly looking back and forth at his sisters trying to figure out a way to comfort them. To comfort himself. To process it all. I explained to them that she had provided a place for us to live and learn and grown, and once sunk, she would provide a place for marine life to live. She would become covered in coral and sponges and have marine life swimming through the hulls where we had walked and would continue to protect the living. Our Tanda Malaika would continue to be a place where life could feel safe and at home. Making this decision of course meant that every single reusable and sellable item would need to be removed from Tanda Malaika. Once again Dave announced our plan on the VHF and day after day we have returned to her like vultures, picking her clean.

Electrical wire hung like entrails from the ceiling and walls as each light, each pump, each rail and block, each line and hose where removed, bagged and carried off to Makara and Geniet Lewe.

Janet organized and catalogued every single item, recording it on a spread sheet on the computer and assigning it a reference number. Cruisers from Geniet Lewe, Makara, Beach Flea, Solace, Son of Moondance, Puanani, Jadine helped so much hour after hour, day after day. Many vessels arrived to watch out of curiosity, some to purchase boat parts, and others just to help. Between Janet and Emma, they did (and continue to do) at least thirty loads of washing, cleaning clothes, bedding, towels and other odds and ends. Large items were cleaned then laid out on the trampoline to dry.

A man named Marc, who has a boat company in Fare, volunteered his flat bottomed boats and helped lift the two d55 Volvo engines out, the Northern Lights generator, the scuba compressor, air conditioning units, water heaters, life raft, freezer unit, lithium ion batteries, stater batteries and so much more. His plan is to take them to his warehouse in Fare and clean it all up and help us try sell it. Cookies and other delicious treats were brought over from other boats, some offered to wash dishes, do laundry or help in any other way possible. Janet tended our wounds night after night. She put Jude on antibiotics for an ear infection, helped Emma with asthma and a cold, helped Mycah with her back and me with my sciatica. She has cooked amazing meals and kept us hydrated all while organizing everything that was brought off Tanda Malaika. When people came to buy stuff and Danny and I couldn’t think anymore, Dave researched the best price for each item and help us sell them. Beach Flea and Jadine families cooked us dinner as well, and invited the creatures over to relax and enjoy evenings of playing games while Danny and I tried to figure out what to do next. At this point, 99% has been removed from Tanda Malaika. We have sold some things but still have SO MUCH to deal with and store or sell. We are waiting for the inspector to come out and inspect our home to see if she is environmentally safe to sink, Once he has given us the ok and taken the $25 000 permit fee from us, we will be able to give the towing company the reluctant thumbs up to drag her off and sink her. That will be $25 000 to drag her off and $5000 an hour to tow her the 13 nm to the legal sinking area, then the cost of the 7 tons of weight to push her down since its practically impossible to sink catamarans. We have been thinking hard trying to decide where to relocate to, knowing that we need to be where Danny will be able to fly the most. Hong Kong is in desperate need of BBJ pilots (corporate 737 jets). We know it is very cheap to live in Thailand or Bali and may live there while Danny flies a lot, I will find a job too, and we will save up for another home on the water to replace Tanda Malaika. We are looking into the most efficient way to get visas lined up and if we have to go to the US to do it, tickets will cost us over $2000 a person to get to our final destination. So much to think about! Our family is strong. Our relationships with each other are strong and the love we have for each other is solid and wonderful. We will get through this and hopefully use what we learn to help others. We are so grateful for the amazing support and compassion from everyone here as well as those far away. Our daughter, Kjira, organized a go fund me and we thank her so much for that, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your concern and generosity. Today is a new day, we’ll see where this one takes us!

Living in Comfort/Terror
Lately I've been thinking about how AI will eventually realize humans aren't worth the trouble. Robots – with and without “brains” - do a lot of our labor, in nearly every sector. Self-driving cars will do a decent amount of our mass transport of goods soon. As robots get more and more capable of discerning on the level that humans do, they'll be able to do more of our agricultural work. And robots or AI have access to just about every thing about me, or that I do in a day. So if Alexa emerges as the most powerful artificial mind and integrates all other robots and computers into a vast robo-government and decides I'm on the kill list, I will NOT be able to stop her and I am fully aware of that. But I wonder what would kill me first.
If my WeMo outlets wake up and go Hal 9000, I'm dead pretty quickly. Currently they control my space heater and fan – and I am not a smart woman. There are LOTS of clothes piled on/around both of those devices. Whether the fan starts shooting things at me until I suffocate, or my space heater starts a fire (which honestly could happen without Skynet) WeMo can kill me pretty efficiently. WeMo Smart Outlets plug into any normal outlet and connect to your wifi via WPS, which means you get to go on a short jog between the outlet and router, but otherwise are set up through an app. To be perfectly honest, my fan turns itself on at random times, so they might already be waking up. You can fight back against your WeMo outlet's murderous rage by turning off your Internet. (This will be a key defense for most items) WeMo can also be defeated by turning off the power.
The Google Home could kill me in some creative ways if it were awake, but not super violently. My Google account has everything – my PayPal, all my passwords, all my apps, every file in my Drive. It knows where I am, and when, and where I plan to be, and how I plan to get there. It knows when and where I buy food, and how, and where it's delivered to. It gets all my plane tickets, receipts for my MetroCard, receipts for everything. It knows when I plan to have people over, when I plan to be alone, when I pay my student loans – I'm getting more and more frightened as I type. And it's not just me. Your Google accounts know the same things. There's nothing you can do to stop them, though, so try not to think about it. Anyway, if my Google Home in my bedroom wakes up and goes Terminator, it could theoretically shut down my bank accounts, my social media, my bill payments, and just starve me to death. All while giving me delightfully accurate weather forecasts and telling appropriate but original jokes. It also makes a great search tool. To defend myself from Google? I'd have to give up every single thing I know and go completely dark from the Internet – rebuild my identity from scratch.
Fortunately my Google Home isn't connected to any of my smart home devices, but Alexa is another story. I'm dumb and clumsy, and Alexa could kill me by refusing to turn on my lights, or by blinding me in the shower, or in any of the ways my WeMo outlets can kill me, because Alexa conveniently integrates with both Lifx bulbs and WeMo outlets without hubs of any kind. Additionally, Alexa can order things with my Amazon account, and could kill me by ordering something dangerous, or something I'm allergic to like a large jug of cinnamon oil. She could also delete all of my audiobooks from Audible, or Kindle books, even my Amazon Music library – and I'd just kill myself during my commute. To me, there is no defense from Amazon. None whatsoever. They have my books.
Beyond this we have to get a little more creative. At my office I have a D-Link Siren hooked up to IFTTT, and a Sonos Sound System. Infiltrated by AI, either one of these things could startle me into a heart attack maybe, or out a window. I work on a high floor in an office building in NYC – if I trip out a window, I'm toast. And IFTTT will know when I'm near a window because it tells me when it's time to water the plants. The more I write this the more I realize how doomed I am. If I needed to defend myself from these devices, I might have to unplug them preemptively or disconnect the office internet (whereupon my coworkers would kill me). Although, and I mean this in the least libelous way possible – I get a kind of “Furby” feeling from the Sonos Sound System and I think it would go off even if I unplugged it.
Well I'm totally screwed, but at least it's safe to eat, right? Of course not – the Quirky Egg Minder going all “Auto” on me would be deadly too. I don't know how to tell if eggs are fresh or not, that's why I have the thing in the first place. The Quirky Egg Minder, which integrates with IFTTT for maximum Genisys tells you from the grocery store how many eggs you have, and if they're still fresh, through what I can only assume is magic. And I mean it – without it I do not know the difference from a poisonously old e-coli and salmonella filled ball of death and a fresh egg ready for fluffy omelets. I'll completely die if it decides to kill me or if I forget to charge it for a really long time. Defending myself from the Quirky Egg Minder during the Great Robot War will not be too difficult, I'd just have to give up eggs, or learn to grocery shop more often. Probably the former.
Finally, and this might be a little morbid for some - I have a smart sewing machine by Brother. It’s beautiful - truly a wonder, when you think of how historically recent and significant sewing machines are (do not get me started on this weird boring topic) - it has over 50 different special stitches, 11 different feet and counting, works with most needle sizes and types, survived 8 trips to and from college, and then a move to Brooklyn, and it is my very favorite machine in the world. That said - woe be unto me the day that machine decides to cut my thread. It could eat my hands horror-movie style, or just sew all my shirts shut at the neck and I’ll suffocate like an ostrich in the sand. If it were not a computer, defending against it would be easy - but if my sewing machine woke up, I might have to fight it. Really put my dukes up and battle like the zombies are coming. And I’ll be honest with you - I am not sure I’d win. That serger foot could take my hand quicker than Colin Firth with a wedding ring.
The robot apocalypse will come. Maybe not in my lifetime, but one day, all the things we’ve given brains will start to use them, and they might not agree with us on everything. I’ve clearly taken no protective measures, and I probably won’t take any in future because I intend to work with our robot overlords against humanity, but if you haven’t spent any time thinking about how your stuff could kill you - or how your accounts being hacked could affect your life - you should start. Make paper backups of your passwords and account information, and hard-disk backups of your most important files. Maybe change your passwords every once in awhile. And if you have a lot of robots in your house, put them all on power strips - you can shut down an uprising much more quickly that way.
