i don't think anyone is exactly jumping for joy at the words "open heart surgery." Especially not when it's you... on a table... alone with a light and a scalpel.
lights are dimmer for power conservation (dogshit battery)
processing power is also reduced unless necessary for hacking
low power mode has a dual purpose; conservation of battery power as well as keeping temperatures low to prevent overheating (huge headache + lots of broken parts)
clear coat has long eroded due to weathering + gel exposure during chamber maintenance
loss of coolant is nearly a death sentence for him and anyone involved due to the particular chemical mixture being difficult to find + reproduce (insanely hazardous to touch or breathe the fumes of)
yeah his radiator is probably rusted over but he's not touching that. it hasn't completely plugged itself so who cares (not him)

on a related note, virgil is the robot equivalent of a beater car with the check engine light on and probably 6 other lights on, the underside is completely rusted out and the tires are bald. but it still runs so whatever, drive it into the ground buddy. he genuinely refuses to perform any work on himself unless its something critical. boo hoo nobody cares about some sensors and --- ah. temperature sensor.

Honestly without the data centers hemorrhaging water and the data privacy concerns and the government overreach concerns and the "literally replacing people in jobs so those people struggle paycheck to paycheck" and "making every single product worse" and "nothing is sold without it anymore" and all, I think AI and smart devices would be pretty neat.
Like. Yeah, I would actually like a coffeemaker that makes coffee automatically so that the smell of it helps me get out of bed instead of hitting snooze.
I would actually like a home with smart blinds and thermostats and windows and air sensors that detect and automatically manage the indoor and outdoor temperature and air quality, and make small adjustments to keep my interior as comfortable as possible without me having to think and spend time and energy doing it all myself.
I would actually like suggestions about what fun things I would enjoy in the area that are objectively decided and not the same ten attractions because they're the most popular. I want the weird things that get smothered by algorithms or that you have to dig to find, and I think AI could be great for that!
I want menu planning and adhd life hacks and help with taking notes during meetings and summarizing email threads fifty emails long and a system that knows me and my preferences so when I look for something, I don't have to take hours or days poring over a gazillion articles and posts just because I need a new WiFi router and struggle with decision making.
I want the decisions that I don't enjoy making to be easier so I can spend my time learning and growing in ways I want to, and doing hobbies I love, or doing self improvement! Spending a few hours looking at routers is...not that.
We only have so many hours on this planet.
I do, actually, want all of these things. But I want my privacy and water rights and security and jobs-or-UBI for everyone and safety more.
Sigh.

AH I REMEMBERED WHAT I WAS GONNA SAY EARLIER but it's kind of stupid, lmao.
So my partner is getting into brewing beer and I got them a Tilt, which is a Bluetooth hydrometer. It measures specific gravity and temperature, which are things you want to know so that you don't kill your yeast or whatever. Except the sensor's Bluetooth range is super short, and it basically runs via a phone app, and the temperature we're logging currently is the crawlspace, accessible via the staircase closet. So they were like, wait, what do we do about this, because I can't leave my phone in the closet, that's my alarm clock.
In a kind of ridiculous turn of life imitating art, I was like, hold up, I got just the thing right at my desk. Bam. Old phone. We just needed to scrounge up a charger because the battery is so dead that after charging just enough to power on it claimed it was at 53% (to be fair to it, there is a very real chance that it's correct, and it just holds no charge at this point so the capacity is just THAT low) and now it lives in the closet logging sensor data.
And I was like, you know...didn't I just solve a major story detail with a much larger version of this...yeah, no, this is all vaguely familiar somehow, power supply issues and all. Kind of cool that the concept works though. Kind of weird that it came up at all?
We are not gonna talk about the fact that I still have at least two more ancient-ass phones in a drawer where that came from because look, man, sometimes you just need a camera/mic/mini computer with Bluetooth and wifi that fits in a pocket, and people just get rid of these things, but not me. I actually could build a shitty security system out of them if I was reaaaally inclined. I mean. I'm not. But it's technically possible.
For real though, If I pick up any stupid maker projects I still high-key am thinking about slapping Bluetooth into a necomimi headset and running that through an Arduino and learning to code just enough to let me skip songs/change the volume on Spotify with my brain, because it's entirely doable, and I mean yeah I could do that on my phone remotely too, but that's not funny, now, is it. I'm just not sure it's $350+ of parts funny. Kind of a big investment just to prove the point that haha look I am the extremely ADHD type of lazy where I would rather solve a problem via the most convoluted and complicated Rube-Goldberg type ass machine way possible rather than just perform a single simple action.
