Wow it’s been a while since my last blog post. Mostly because I don’t sign up for as many books as I did before. And I’m trying, slowly, to catch up with my reviews. For now, I mostly try to post for my ARCs and ALCs on time. Which isn’t always possible–for instance, I’m about to start A temporary memory by Marie Johnston, while it releases today… But I’ve signed up for two ARCs in the past few…

The first biography I read about Joan was Joan Crawford: the Essential Biography by Lawrence J. Quirk and William Schoell.  This book paints a sympathetic yet honest portrayal of Joan Crawford, and is very humanizing.  It has good pictures, and is filled with personal accounts of different films and events and relationships from her life.  Quirk was a good friend of hers later in her life, and Schoell met her a few times, so their observations of her and who she was as a person are especially valuable, imo.  I’d definitely recommend this book if you want to get to know more about the woman AND the legend that is Joan Crawford.

The protagonist of the comic is a man called “Herr Schwill,” a preeminent, greedy art dealer who has no qualms about swindling, threatening, or killing to get art for his collections. He’s recognizable as a stand in for Hermann Göring- Hitler’s right hand man and a ruthless collector plunderer of art. The naming convention is hilarious- and damning. Schwill, or swill- is a term for kitchen scraps and garbage that generally end up as pig food, and Herr Schwill’s fate isn’t much better. Schwill dies for his greed- much like a pig being slaughtered at its prime.

This comic takes place well after the death of Göring, making it a revenge story in retrospect. Encyclopedia Britannica notes that the real Göring committed suicide before he could be executed (Fraenkel et al.), but AITU #53 gives him no such luxury. The reframing of the death of one of the most destructive men the art world has ever seen afforded artists, writers, and readers of the comic a modicum of control over a cultural tragedy outside the scope of any one human to deal with. Within the four page comic, the villain is identifiable, reachable, and- essential to the “horror” of the genre- suffers for his crimes. This suffering forms the gut-wrench emotional impact that horror comics were so known for, and it is the fantasy of someone else’s suffering that allows an emotional release to take place. It’s satisfying to see someone who has made others suffer, suffer and be punished for it. Doubly so when that closure was denied in reality by suicide, rather than by ordained execution. The twisted look of fear on Herr Schwill’s face as the guillotine of vengeance (and what else can it be? No “justice” is forthcoming- there is no guarantee that the Baron is a good person himself!) comes swinging down creates an emotional climax that leaves the reader to fill in the blanks themselves, just as efficiently as the artist hoped.
